Exclusive: Stolen New York dog found in Pawtucket

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - A dog stolen from New York was spotted a month later right here in Rhode Island.

The journey for 10-year-old Bugsy, a Shepard mix, took him 178 miles from his home in the Bronx, to Pawtucket, where he was found wandering the streets. Five weeks ago Bugzy escaped from his backyard in the Bronx.

"We picked up the dog running loose on John Street," says Animal Control Officer John Holmes.

It turns out Bugzy got a ride.

His owner, Theresa Mollica, tells Eyewitness News by telephone, a witness saw a woman driving a car with Pennsylvania license plates, pick the panting dog up on June 8th, three blocks from his home.

Theresa says the family searched for Bugzy, but had no luck. The dog was especially missed by her husband John, who's terminally ill.

After several phone calls, flyers and a reward offer; a New York animal organization named Rescue Inc., located Bugzy on the Pawtucket Animal Shelter web site.

According to John Holmes, Bugsy has some medical issues. X-rays show some that Bugzy's spleen is enlarged.

Theresa will be reunited with Bugsy Wednesday afternoon. However, Bugzy will need to be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as he gets home.

Meanwhile, Rescue Inc. is receiving the 1,000 dollar reward for finding Bugzy.

Do you believe this, we have been looking for this dog for over a month, Mila has also been helping us, alot of Ny gals including Darlene have been contacting people and emailing all over for this dog, one of our gals found him on Petfinders yesterday as up for adoption in RI, and sent us the email immediately to ID him,they called the shelter and ID'd the dog, he still had his tag with his name on, they called me right after to tell me it's him, the balls of Rescue Ink to say they found him, yes they were on the email but were not the ones who found him on the site, and then go there to do a press release saying they found him considering the girls who did find him were right there and then to have the gall to take the $1000.00 reward from a family where the father is dying of cancer!!!!!!!!!!!, Way to go guys, the dog is ill and needs vet care and you take money which should not go to you, I lost all respect for them and so have many others, is it the glory of being on TV and money or is it the love of finding a dog that you want,, I am disguted as well as others over this. To bad if they get pissed, this is wrong and like I care if we get hated for saying this.

Rescue Inc owes the family of Bugzy and the true finder of Bugzy an apology for taking credit where no credit was due and for accepting the reward. That would be the HONORABLE and honest way to make amends.

You know the shame is they really have helped get dogs back, but I wonder if they really did it or someone else did?

When we were out looking for Vivi not once did we think about the reward. It was all about getting the dog back safely.

Rescue Ink sounds alot like that SAR guy Harry Whats-his-name. Waits for everyone to do all of the work and then shows up to take the credit.Unfortunately, there are frauds everywhere

How money much did you lay out of YOUR OWN POCKET for the search of VIVI??

The truth be told, ALL the money I got from grubbing donations I spent on myself and now have a beautfily house on the Riviera.

I never put the ads in the local papers like I said I did, I never put gas in my car to drive aroiund, I took buses and hitch hiked.

I never put up those posters that were sent to me, I used a magic marker to draw Vivi's picture on poles and used string to keep them up. String is much cheaper than tape and staples.

Debbie used chewing gum and I think Darlene just used her spit..

Opps, I forgot. We didn't use cells phonea either because Honi had a whole coop of carrier pigeons that was used to bring us notes on the next sighting. Ppigeons are much cheaper to maintain then cell phone bills.

Kathy, your group probably peeled off birch bark to write your notes on so you didn't have to buy any paper either and then tied the messages to the legs of the carrier pigeons. Haha. :)

debbie has Vivi and painted her black. remember that one?? that's after i had Vivi, had her gain 70 lbs. and called her Pit Bull. we also used Harry's Kentucky Fried Chicken grease to adhere posters to the poles. Rosa's truck had enough chicken grease to do all of Queens.

Madison Update: Gina was about a month posting an update. She posted after I e-mailed her. I know she is having a very hard time struggling to keep her Faith up for Madison's recovery. I cannot believe how quickly the summer is going by. I have been involved in a children's show at the local theatre so it has kept me very busy. John took the kids to see the show last weekend. The show is Seussical the musical which is the story of Horton Hears a Who set to music and it's fun and upbeat with lots of sounds and lights. Madison seemed to be really interested John said. She looked around during the show and didn't get startled with the loud music.

It was also time last week for Madison's 6 month dental visit. She did really well! The dentist was able to get in there and clean real well and got a good look at her teeth. He said that she does not have any cavities and her teeth look healthy. Her gums are still swollen from the seizure meds she was on, but I'm hoping that they go down now that she is off them. We are good until next time!

There is nothing too much else new with Madison. She continues to work hard. I've been a little concerned with how tight her hands and feet have been lately. Please continue praying for restoration for our beautiful princess! As for me, I continue to struggle emotionally, but I am blessed to have a supportive husband and family and friends.

I will update soon!

I hope they find Jetta. There have been too many pets getting lost at the airports. These are family members and the trauma of them getting lost due to airport negligence tears at my heart.
