Critics of County Executive Steve Levy were scheduled to mass Thursday at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge, but the event fizzled after only a half dozen protesters showed up and quickly departed.
Organizer Terry Scofield, of the Hunger Action Network, said that 5,000 flyers but claimed people were “scared away” by fear of retaliation from the county executive.
The flyer for the protest, dubbed the “1000 cut coalition," was planned for the same day Levy was holding a $750 a head golf fundraiser, and it criticized Levy for his stands on the college budget, on closing the county nursing home, and on selling the county-run HMO.
While she expected more than 200 demonstrators, Scofield said after, “I’m going to go home and shoot myself.”

Biggest priority now is a rollback of tax rates to 1994 levels for those with incomes of $250,000. and up, using the revenue to fund a circuit breaker to give property tax relief for homeowners and tenants when property taxes exceed a percentage of income.
