The Barack and Hillary Reunion Tour has booked its first gig, Newsday's Glenn Thrush reports.
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will appear side by side next Thursday for the first time since the former first lady suspended her presidential bid, for a fundraiser where she’ll try to convince former donors to share the wealth with Obama.
The two top Democrats will share the stage at the Mayflower Hotel — the stylish Washington establishment frequented by former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer in his days as Client 9.
The low-key duet, coming after Clinton’s June 7 withdrawal announcement, stands in stark contrast to former candidate John Edwards’ first joint appearance with Obama, a huge public endorsement rally in Michigan last month.
“As we move forward, we invite you to join us for a National Finance Committee meeting with both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on Thursday, June 26th in Washington, D.C., to discuss how we can work together to support Barack Obama and the Democratic Party,” wrote Clinton’s national finance director Jonathan Mantz in an e-mail to top fundraisers yesterday.
“Hillary ran for President because she wants to put this country on the right track,” added Mantz, who is urging her former supporters to ante up the $2,300 maximum contribution for Obama in the general election. “She ... will do everything she can to unify the party and to elect Barack Obama the next President of the United States.”
While most Clinton fundraisers have said they’ll enthusiastically back Obama, some, including fashion magnate Susan Buell, have said they are struggling with switching sides after an often bitter 17-month campaign.
Clinton and Obama last met at the home of California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, shortly before Clinton officially suspended her campaign.
