The Magic Dragon works because there are only 9 possible answers to the math problem. Look at the chart of symbols and you will see that the following 9 numbers always have the same symbol associated with them: 9 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 1), 18 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 2), 27 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 3), 36 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 4), 45 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 5), 54 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 6), 63 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 7), 72 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 8), and 81 (only possible answer for two-digit numbers beginning with 9).
