Baseball is back

I admit it. I know nothing about any sport. Don't know the terms, don't understand any of it and I'm not ashamed. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good party. And no one can party like Chicago sports fans.

No matter how poorly our teams have been doing for what seems like forever now, Chicagoans are there ready to raise their beer glasses to them. Hence, it was no surprise that during our live broadcast with Eric and Kathy from the MIx, at the Harry Carry's Tavern on Sheffield this morning, Cubs fans were ready at the bar at 7AM.

Granted, they had to wait for the booze because the bar was not allowed to sell alcohol until seven. But when the imaginary bell rang, they were there with their livers ready to start the legendary partying.

Come to think of it, when you are a faithful fan of a perpetually losing team, you need a drink or two to make it through and keep the faith. And that goes for the Sox too. I'm a fan of both and of neither. I'm just an observer. Let's play ball and drink up.

From goat to hero

Do you ever stop to think how absurd it is that the Cubs haven't won a World Series in 100 years? I mean really stop and think about it, apart from the novelty of it, or what a badge of honor it is to cheer them despite this futility?

We've fought in 2 World Wars, survived the Depression, put a man on the moon, triumphed over Communism, and cloned a damn sheep! Yet no World Series title.

People often ask me if I believe in curses. And I usually tell them "Yes."

I use at least a dozen every day.

Then they say, "No, not curse words. CURSES! Like, do you think the Cubs are cursed?"

Truthfully, I'm not sure whether or not I believe in curses, and that bothers me. When formulating an opinion, I usually dissect a matter, review all the facts and all differing opinions, and then come to my own conclusion.

But there's just not enough case history here for me to study. So . . . I've created some.

I recently conducted an experiment, which I believe, will prove whether or not the Cubs are cursed. If they are, then I guarantee the Cubs will win the World Series this year, because the actions I took go right to the core of those who are believed to have cursed the team in the first place.

WGN: HOME OF THE STARS

Whenever I’m speaking to high schools, or the Moose Lodge, people always ask about what it's like to interview celebrities. Interviewing Jim Carrey or Brad Pitt is fun but what’s more of a thrill for me is to interview people like Robert Hegyes and David Newall. Who???
That's Juan Epstein (Welcome Back Kotter) and Speedy McFeeley (Mr. Rogers;) two recent guests on WGN Morning News. A-list Hollywood stars impress me less than the TV friends of my childhood. Recently, Cheryl Ladd of Charlie's Angels was here and we always enjoy meeting the challenge of trying to do the interview differently than your typical Channel 7. We suprised Cheryl with a slow-motion montage of her performing different activities from Battle of the Network Stars. She hadn't seen it in years.

In the past, we’ve interviewed Mr. Kotter (Gabe Kaplan,) most members of the Brady Bunch, and my favorite, Adam West from the Batman TV series.

Still on my Most Wanted list:

Martin Milner and Kent McCord of Adam 12.

Robert Clary (LeBeau) Richard Dawson (Newkirk) of Hogan’s Heroes

Max Gail: “Wojciehowicz” of Barney Miller.

Bruce Weitz: Belker of Hill Street Blues

Larry Storch, Corp.Agarn of F-Troop

Do you have a favorite you'd like us to track down? Shoot us a message.

Thanks
Larry

I Have a Confession!

Okay, here it is....
I have been in Chicago for almost 3 years now and guess what....

I HAVE NOT BEEN TO A CUBS GAME YET!
(I HAVEN'T BEEN TO A SOX GAME EITHER, by the way!!)

I was just sitting here thinking about it as Pat is delivering his sportscast and it hit me.
Wow, I have never stepped foot into Wrigley Field.
I hear going to a Cubs game is more than just watching a baseball game.
It's a REAL experience, right!??!
Well, you would think, my colleagues would invite me out to a game with them since they know I am a transient to this lovely city, but no!
That's okay.
I am going to march myself right on over to Wrigley and watch me a game by my d*@# self!!!!
I'll let you know what I think later!!!!

WGN's early wake-up call

Residents of Downers Grove were angry, this morning, when the town's tornado siren malfunctioned, and went off around 1:00 AM. I imagine when one is in a deep sleep, a tornado siren must sound like a scud missile.

While I've never been awakened by a tornado siren, I have been startled by something nearly as loud.

Her name is Cindy Munoz.

She is a floor director for our show. She is about 5'0" tall, about 100 lbs, and she's louder than an elephant.

Tony "O"(ward) winner!

espo%20pic.jpgThe Hawks welcomed back another one of their greats last night. Tony Esposito. And they did it right- personalized, with a few surprises, but nothing over the top.

It was especially neat to see Tony "O" put his old goalie mask on again, though I was waiting for Special Agent Clarice Starling to come arrest him.

As nice as the ceremony was, though, it was not perfect. Watch below to see what I mean.

From bad to worse

First off, thank you so much for the supportive feedback to my previous blog. Sadly, I have to report that things have gone from bad to worse. Puerto Rico was great. Amelia enjoyed it so much she barely napped and woke up every night twice. We love her grandma and grandpa, but they are from the school of "I've raised my kids, now you raise yours", so there was no midnight help. Lots of help during the day, though.

Back in Chicago, she either has a cold or is theething or both, so the night time has been even harder than before. She's congested and uncomfortable, so going against what every book says about there first cold, I took her to the pediatrician yesterday.

I admit that I love being at my pediatrician's office. I hate taking her there and expose her to all the kids that spent the night projectile vomiting, but once I'm with her doctor, I feel so safe. The doctor and his staff make me feel better about my worries. They seem to have all the answers. I wonder if we can move in.

Dr. King says we can start getting her on the sleeping schedule again, but I feel awful letting her cry it out when she's so congested. So we've decided this weekend we will get back on the wagon. We are between crying it out and the Ferber system, but the last one might have us sleep deprived for another week.

I'll let you know how it goes. Meanwhile, I'll pile on the make up and have 2 cups of coffee instead of one so I can be my perky self Around Town.

I'm doing it blind-folded this year

NCAA_08_FinalFour.jpg It's that time of year again, when every man or woman with a bracket sheet and a pulse becomes Dick Vitale. Most of us have seen about 5 - 10 of the 65 NCAA Tournament teams play this season, but that won't stop us from qualifying our 12-5 upset with lines like:

"I really like their guard play."

Admit it, the best you can do is the last name of one of their guards.

And I'm with you. I'm picking #12 Villanova to beat #5 Clemson.

I know one guy on Villanova.

It's in the spirit of this shared expertise we all have, that I'm announcing our 2nd Annual WGN Morning News Office Pool. There is no prize involved, but at least if you beat me, you have evidence to qualify your argument that I know nothing about sports.

All you need to play is a Yahoo! account. Click on the link, make your picks, and we will update the standings on our blog after each round.

I look forward to taking your sports man/womanhood

"The Pat Tomasulo Show"

For some reason, it doesn't have the same ring to it as "The Carol Burnett Show" or "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be as good! Someday, I hope to have my own show . . .

Again.

There was a time long ago when my vision nearly came to fruition. And I still think the execs made a mistake.

Sleep, for the love of God, sleeeeep!

Right when you thought your child has a pattern, the little sucker changes it on you. Words of wisdom from my brother before Amelia was born. And darn it, he's a wise man.

Since last Sunday, I've been trying to teach (use the word loosely here) my five month baby how to sooth herself when she wakes up, after we put her down for the night. I've been following that sleep bible by Dr. Weissbluth called "Healthy Sleeping Habits, Happy Baby". In fact, Amelia's pediatrician is in his practice, so every time she goes in for a check up, Dr. Aaron King asks about her sleeping habits and kindly suggests that we let her cry, so she can learn to self soothe. There's a whole plan in the book that many parents swear by.

I admit we have waited as long as we could to have to do this. But last Sunday, our daughter kept waking up around four in the morning and by the third time my husband put the pacifier in her mouth (or pressed her snooze button, as he likes to say), we knew it was time.

The first time I let her cry it out was during nap time. She cried for 40 minutes and slept 15. That night, after I put her down asleep, she woke up 8 minutes later and cried for 20 minutes, but then slept through the night. The second night, cried for 45 minutes and slept through the night. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday she slept through the night. I thought we were home free. My bright baby had learned her lesson!

Yeah right, last night our little sucker woke up at 1:42 in the morning and cried for twenty minutes like we were killing her. We picked her up, afraid the neighbors would call DCFS on us. (We live in a high rise with a lot of single people) It took her father 2 hours and 4 ounces to get her to go back to sleep. She was up again at 4:30, but then she only needed her snooze button.

What the hell! Where did the pattern go? Where did all our hard work go? I thought we had gotten over the hump. I don't know if I can take the crying out all over again. And now we are going to Puerto Rico for a long weekend, so is the pattern gone forever???

I guess I have to get back on that horse. So if you are my neighbor, we are back on Tuesday, so please forgive us if you hear a screaming baby for an hour at 1AM, we are doing it for her own good. Unless you pray hard for us and hope a miracle happens and Amelia goes back to self soothing without making a peep. Yeah, right.

Employee of the Month has Gone Straight to My Head

Paul Konrad has been whining and crying for many, many moons for never getting the "Employee of the Month."
Konrad gets so worked up when he sees someone like me that is so undeserving getting their picture taken and getting it posted all over the station. I understand his frustration. I mean, I didn't risk my life holding two high voltage cables together in a sleet storm so the breaking news could stay on the air.
Hell, I didn't even stay late and help knit dog sweaters for the needy or anything.
I just did my job. And, truthfully, I couldn't have done it without everyone else on the show doing their job.
(Blatant stroke to you WGN-TV employess that are reading this... Please remember the deep love and gratitude I have for you, especially around December when you will be asked to vote for the "Employee of the Year." wink-wink, nudge-nudge.)

Seriously, it's an honor.
I get to have fellow employees tease, taunt and rip me a new one. I get a parking space for a month to use that is just behind where Larry Potash parks illegally. But, best of all, I get to rub it in Paul Konrad's face.
(The award, you dirty bird.)

Not, how did you get your start in the tv business...
Not, what made you want to be a journalist...
Not, how fulfilling is your job...
