Signed and dined

Ever since I signed my first autograph for someone, I've never asked to receive one. Actually, that's not true. I have requested autographs since, but I haven't kept one (and I also haven't paid for my brother's birthday present in 9 years).

I'm really not interested in them, and for this I blame the people who've sought my signature. You've destroyed the whole autograph mystique for me. When I'm signing a picture for someone (or a postcard, which is what the station now has us sign because they cost less than glossy 8X10's), I'm thinking to myself: "Who in their right mind wants MY signed photo?"

So I figure, if I'm thinking that when I sign something, then someone else must be thinking the same thing when I ask for their signature. Certainly there are exceptions- some people act like they're giving up a kidney when they sign for you- but overall, I gotta think this feeling is pretty universal.

I couldn't even imagine if I got paid for my signature. The same action that authorizes the release of my medical records, is also a paid service???? I've paid for one autograph in my life- a Don Mattingly signed baseball back in 1992, and that was only because I was 14 and already had every card from the '92 Topps set. Since then, I've spent my money on things like college loans and heat.

Yet, the sports memorabilia industry endures. I recently attended the biggest sports memorabilia show in the country, and came away shocked that 14-year old me had so much in common with today's grown men.

A-list sports day

Every 6 weeks or so, we get a notable sports guest to wake up at an un-Godly hour and join us live. This morning, we suckered 4 people into appearing, which means we probably wont have another live guest until November.

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White was here with 2 of his fighters- Patrick "The Predator" Cote, and the pound-for-pound king of mixed martial arts, Anderson "The Spider" Silva. Anderson is a soft-spoken, mild-mannered, unassuming Brazilian man who could dismantle your body in less time than it'd take you to pour a bowl of cereal. Cote is the man who will fight him at UFC 90, which is October 25 at All State Arena.

Later on in the show, Cubs second baseman Mike Fontenot stopped by. He failed to make a quick getaway, though, and got roped in to coming back some time. Maybe the prospect of another free stack of pancakes (or the chance to sit down with me) was too much to resist. We commiserated about being short, talked about his pre-game ritual with Carlos Zambrano, and Mike gave us a prediction for the rest of the season.

Paul leaves today's post-show meeting early...and let's you in on it! Check out all the excitement that goes in to a morning meeting, below...

What day is today?

Where did the weekend go? Between a teething kid, a husband with a cold and cleaning walls for our impending move, I have no idea what hapenned to my precious weekend. We are in the process of moving. Something we should be pros at since we do it almost every 2 years. But we are, as always, overwhelmed. We don't know what moving company we used last time. Now with a baby, we have doubled the amount of stuff. And because I have the more flexible schedule, I have to run all these errands. Intimidating as all heck because I'm horrible with numbers and quotes and all that.

So that is my reality right now. If you know any good tips about moving without headaches, bring them on. The only one I've come up with is staying as long as possible at work so my husband deals with the movers on D Day.

Musings about McCartney's Magical Mystery Tour of Illinois

Paul McCartney's been to Chicago more times than we'll ever know and I've seen him twice in concert here. Never before have I thought twice about his travel arrangements, assuming the Billionaire Beatle traveled in style beyond my wildest dreams. But for some strange reason, the news of his road trip through Illinois down Route 66 in an old Ford Bronco captured my imagination. I almost felt like it put us both in the same low level of the stratosphere, after all, I've traveled through that same nothingness of central Illinois way too many times to remember.

Paul's reps reportedly said he and his new girlfriend, Nancy Shevell, wanted to use the trip as some sort of bonding experience. I started to wonder about what it was like, cooped up in that Bronco, just the two of them.

There's always that inevitable awkward moment of having to break wind. You're in the car for more than a couple of hours at a time and it's gonna happen. And there's no way around your traveling companion knowing that you did it. You're busted once you roll down the window, everyone knows why you're doing it. And you're busted if you let loose and just let the smell overcome your passenger. A no-win situation. How does that help bond with a new girlfriend? But I wonder, do Sir Paul and his socialite girlfriend laugh it off, or ignore it. And what about driving past the hog farms, does she ask him "Was that you?"

And how many pit stops did they make? At 66, Paul is the same age as my dad on the last road trip I took with him. I wonder if Paul's bladder is anything like Dad's, keeping us from driving more than 45 minutes at time, extending an 8 hour trip into 10 hours. That's enough to put a strain on any relationship. And I pictured Paul stopping at Bubba's Gas and Groceries, running in, and asking for the key to a restroom that hasn't been cleaned since the days of Wings.

Yes, clearly I'm thinking about the most juvenile components of hitting the open road, but these mundane forces of nature are about the only common bond I have with one of the most famous people in the world.

Where does a Paul McCartney eat on a road trip? Fine dining is minimal, depending on your view of Cracker Barrel (do they have a vegetarian selection?) Did he treat Nancy to nice breakfast at the Waffle House? Or did they pack a nice tofu picnic to enjoy at one of Illinois fine rest areas?

And all the great traveling movies came to mind, thinking of Paul as Clark Griswald in "Vacation," making a wrong turn into a rough neighborhood in St. Louis. Or falling asleep at the wheel as John Candy did in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," ending up on the wrong side of the highway, as other drivers shouted "you're going the wrong way!" and him saying "how do they know where we're going?" Maybe Paul and Nancy picked up Neil Patrick Harris like in "Harold and Kumar..."

And finally, why a Ford Bronco? That thing probably gets less than 10 mpg? Not that he has to worry about gas prices, but doesn't the gas guzzling contradict his environmental consciousness?

One thing I know for sure, if Paul made this trip with Heather Mills, the lyrics "He blew his mind out in a car" would have been an unfortunate reality. And we would be left with Ringo.

Jet Favre

Get ready for the NFL's version of the Beverly Hillbillies. Brett Favre is moving from Green Bay to the biggest media market in the country- New York (technically, northern New Jersey). Let's examine some of the lifestyle changes Favre is certain to encounter.

Giants Stadium is mere miles from the Manhattan skyline, and a 5-minute car ride to a major international airport. Lambeau Field is next to a Shopko.

Fans in Green Bay are generally very friendly, well-behaved and supportive. Fans in New York throw snowballs and boo Santa Claus.

In Green Bay, people use the F-word only in extreme circumstances. In New York, it's required to insert some form of the F-word between "this" and "guy" at all times.

And then there are the differences between the media . . . .

The greatest love of all

I recently found the following e-mail in my inbox:

"There's Pat on the blog again . . . and not only does he post his writing, but he needs to post video of himself doing his fantastically funny bits. Oh Pat, thou dost love thyself too much."

Enough Tomasulo Already

So what's wrong with loving yourself? I think if more people learned to love themselves, they'd be better at loving others. Of course, there are always dangers to loving oneself too much (chafing, becoming a shut-in, etc.), but I don't believe I'm at that point.

Well said Robin. Well said.
