I swore I'd never do it. And they practicaly had to put a gun to my head. But I've finally (reluctantly) signed up for Facebook. Why? I still don't know.
As a card-carrying member of quote, "Traditonal Media," please excuse my skepticism over this supposedly improved version of communication. And somebody please tell me the purpose behind sharing ridiculously mundane details from your everyday life. And who has the time to sit and read my nonsense? Here's my first riveting entry:
"I'm thinking about walking down to the WGN cafeteria for a cup of coffee. Maybe I'll pick up a pack of Twinkies. I'll let you know how it turns out." Great stuff? huh? And the sad thing is this will be about the most exciting thing I'll do today ... not including lunch. "Maybe I'll dine at my favorite encased-meat emporium later today - Hot Doug's on California. Or later on, "now I'm pumping about $25 worth of unleaded gasoline into my 2003 Mercury. Should I buy a MegaMillion ticket ? If I win I think I'll call in sick tomorrow ... "

Listen, I use Facebook. I LIKE Facebook. It's a nice way to promote our show, keep in touch with old friends, and get a sufficient background check of strangers- you can learn a lot about someone by looking through their "Wrigleyville 2008!" photo album.

If I got arrested for all the dumb things I did in college, I'd be serving consecutive life sentences right now. Let's see, dropping water balloons from the 15th floor of my dorm at 3 AM on some poor slob coming home from an all-nighter? At least 5 - 10. Breaking into a floormate's room and hiding spoiled cheese? Well, considering she moved out of the room for 3 days . . . I'm saying 15 - 20.
Thankfully, I never partied with Michael Phelps.
As far as I know, they didn't celebrate Valentine's Day in Old Havana. But somewhere in the future, when we're free to visit Cuba, take your Valentine sweetheart to a romantic place known as "La Loma Del Angel." I still vividly remember walking the cobblestoned streets of this picturesque Old Havana neighborhood in 1998 - a wonderful moment from my WGN assignment to cover the historic visit of Pope John Paul II.
For many reasons, this is a special place for me. My Cuban ancestors are said to have lived just blocks from "The Hill of the Angel" - which gets its name from the historic old church on top of the hill. The beautiful image, circa 1913, shows the classic Havana neighborhood at the corner of Cuarteles and Compestela. It also happens to be one of the tallest points in the capital city. Crowning the famous hill is a centuries-old church known as the Iglesia del Santo Angel. Built in 1630, the famous church has appeared on countless postcards and tourist photographs. Nearly destroyed by a powerful 1846 hurricane, the venerable structure was reconstructed in Gothic style. And for as long as anyone can remember, it's been a place of great significance for generations of "Habaneros." .
Cuban lovers have long flocked to the romantic neighborhood, The family story goes that great-grandfather, Julo, used to rendevouz here with his love-interest (and my future great-grandmother). You can see family photos of Julio Rivero and bride on my Old Havana Foods website.

Like most kids, I spent a lot of time after school playing basketball with my friends. Unlike most kids, I only had one friend. So we'd alternate between games of one-on-one, and games of H-O-R-S-E. I can remember like it was yesterday the thrill of hitting an impossible shot, or the joy of getting away with saying dirty words when my buddy made it to H-O-R . .
But if the NBA has its way, my child will never experience that joy . . .
