A Shirtless Ricky Martin

It was that last hour of sleep you realize you have when you suddenly wake up thinking the alarm clock is going to go off. At first, it's a relief and even like winning the lottery to get that extra hour. But the really weird, even scary vivid dreams happen during that hour.

That is when Ricky Martin appeared in my dream. As you can imagine, it was the culmination of a strange dream. I was the counselor at a NASA camp for girls who wanted to be astronauts. For some reason, cat fights kept happening. I kept telling the ladies NASA would never recruit fighters. Like I know, right. And then Ricky Martin came on stage to speak and I guess sing to the girls. For some reason, he took his shirt off.

Then I remember that he came off stage and his security team kept saying, "No one touch Ricky, no one touch Ricky". But he spotted me in the crowd and said "I need to hug my Ana Maria Belaval!"

Yes, he was all sweaty. Yes, my girlfriend Tyra says she would have toweled him off first. But my Puerto Rican id would be taken away if I didn't hug him right away, even in my dreams.

What was even more weird is that he gave me career advice.
"Why weren't you in the Pedro Navaja musical?" (That's a popular musical based on a song by Ruben Blades)
Like a school girl, I just shrugged my shoulders.
He said "Do you have an agent?"
I said "Yes, but he mostly looks for news stuff".
"Well, let me take care of it."

I'm still waiting for the call from Ricky's people.

Well, we're back to blogging...

I look forward to keeping you guys up to date with the behind the scenes dish.

Today's guests included my girl Erica from the Shops at North Bridge.
She did a great segment teaching the guys how to "Dress Like A Man."
It was necessary.
Men, I love you... but I'm fine with seeing less of you when it comes to the jeans.
My goodness it's either all hanging out of the back or the front.
No one wants to see that. Honestly. If you're over 30 and your name doesn't end with "eezy," buy a belt and some pants that fit.
Erica had a few good ideas. We've heard lots of "feedback" about the $198 jeans.
I acknowlege, that's on the high end, especially for guys who's names don't end with "eezy."
But we're open to suggestion, where do you buy your denim? I'm working on another idea so the info is appreciated.

Dr. Ian Smith, who many of you know from "Celebrity Fit Club" was also in today. He answered a few questions but we had a lot more. We're going to do more of those segments were he speaks right to you guys... we're also cooking up something great in the coming weeks. So if you'd like to gain 15- minutes of fame by loosing 15 pounds or more, stay tuned!
You can meet Dr. Ian this Saturday, March 29 at the Borders in Hyde Park. He'll be there talking about his most recent book, "The Four Day Diet."
All the info is on our website.

Also on the website is Dean Richards' Chicago exclusive with Tom Joyner... "The Fly Jock" has been on the air in Chicago since the mid eighties... until last Tuesday when he found out he was being dumped from V103. He talked to Dean about what happened, attempting to put some of the conspiracy rumors to rest. Take a listen and decide for yourself, just click on the "Dean's List" tab.

Tomorrow Dean reviews "Monsters vs. Aliens" see you then!

The Rats are Dead

(Chicago - March, 2009) "It's so cold the rats are dead." That's my new favorite description for the winter of 2009. The chilling effect on the rodent population (reported in the Chicago Tribune) illustrates the severity of the worst winter we've had in decades.

I'm more-than-ready to say goodbye to winter (and the rats). Because I can still feel the bite of
those sub-zero temperatures cutting through my Long-Johns. For those of us in the reporting business, the misery started back in December. Freakishly-cold conditions turned our Blagojevich stakeouts into an act of torture. In more ways than I can count, standing outside his northside home was a miserable ordeal.

Network news crews, entertainment channels, satellite / microwave trucks and crowds of photographers gummed up the neighborhood for a month. We didn't want to be there - and many Ravenswood Manor residents didn't want us there either

But as we all discovered, bitter-cold may kill the rats ... but you can't exterminate the
media - especialy when there's a big story. But it's almost over (finally). Warmer weather's coming soon. And I won't miss the rodents.

Eyes like a hawk

Me and Paul carry the weight of this blog on our beefy shoulders with our daily web promos, but we've both been slacking in the "written word" department. Our fearless street reporter and man of many hats (literally, hats- the kind you wear on your head), Julian Crews, has been carrying us. So today, I thought I'd post a little entry (you've just read it), and share a portion of this morning's sportscast.

A Cuban named O'Reilly

Chicago – March 17th, 2009) - Nothing says St. Patrick's Day like a bowl of "frijoles negros" (black beans). Don't laugh - because history-loving Cubans dance a jig every March 17th to honor Alejandro O'Reilly.

An Irish general who swore allegiance to the Spanish crown, O'Reilly came to Cuba's aid in the late 1700's. After falling prey to pirates and the invading British Royal Navy, Habaneros looked for help in fortifying their defenses. In his book, Havana - Autobiography of a City, journalist Alfredo Jose Estrada writes of the Irishman's memorable return to the island. O'Reilly marched Spanish forces into Havana in 1763 - receiving the colonial city back from the Redcoats (who occupied "La Habana" for five months after a successful siege). The handover was part of the negotiated end to The Seven Years War.

Historians say the Spanish then asked O'Reilly to analyze what went wrong in the failed defense effort. To prevent future invasions, the general designed a new plan to fortify the city. He refined military training, bolstered troop levels and led the construction of "La Cabana" fortress to help guard Havana harbor.

With the great city secured, the Irishman soon married into a prominent Havana family, securing his place in the island's history. His wife, Doña Rosa de Las Casas, was the sister of Luis de Las Casas, the Governor of Cuba. Years later, Habaneros named a street in the general's honor. To this day, you can walk on the centuries-old cobblestones of "Calle O'Reilly" - undeniable proof of the bond between Ireland and Cuba. In the end, we’re all connected together in one way or another – especially on St. Patrick’s Day!

See Julian's Cooking Debacle - LIVE at Navy Pier

(Chicago - March 12th) I'm going to recommend you avoid my ill-fated cooking demonstration tomorrow, Friday the 13th, at the Chicago Flower & Garden Show, Navy Pier Festival Hall at 11:30 AM. It's not that the event itself isn't spectacular. But I'm afraid I'll cut my thumb off under the glare of 200 food aficionados and some of the biggest celebrity chefs in Chicago.

Harry Truman was talking about me when he said his famous words, "if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen!" Don't get me wrong, I'll try to hold it together. After all, I agreed to do this thing. Show organizer Fred Newton gave me a call to coax me out of hibernation. And I actually thought it would be a good idea. I'm going to show people how to cook my legendary Chili Cubano.

It's funny how I can stand in front of the camera and do a WGN News LIVE shot with millions watching on the superstation, WGN America. But I can't handle the stress of cooking - even a few friends coming over for a dinner party.

So if you want to see the Hindenburg disastor of cooking demos ... bring your patience (and good humor) to Navy Pier. Hope to see you there!

St. Patrick is really Cuban

(Chicago - March, 2009) I used to think Cubans were loud and bositerous - until my
Irish-American bride took me home to meet the family. When I walked in the house, the noise decibel-level felt like a runway at O'Hare - a roar that made the floor shake. But the laughter, high spirits and joy for life made me feel immediately at home.
Can't remember where I read it, but others have felt the natural affinity between Ireland and Cuba. For one thing, both islands are warmed by the waters of the Gulfstream. Through the centuries, both have been predominantly Catholic. Each island-nation sits in the shadow of a larger, sometime imperialistic power (i,e., England and the US). Cubans and Irish are equally known for their fiery passion (which extends to politics). And each nation has made an enormous contribution to world culture and music. But there's more that points to an even deeper bond.

Anthropolgists have long known about the age-old connection between Ireland and the mother of all Spanish-speaking countries - Spain. Many centuries ago, the Celts migrated to the Iberian Peninsula ... settling in the northern regions of Spain - which is why you'll meet many Spaniards with red hair and blue eyes.

And of course, about 500 years ago, the Spanish colonized Cuba ... where in 1763 ... General Alejandro O'Reilly helped design new fortifications to guard Havana harbor from Pirate attacks or foreign invasions.

So the more you look at it, the more you feel the kinship betwen Ireland and Cuba. To my Irish brothers and sisters - Feliz St. Patrick's Day!
