Metro area law enforcers just busted an alleged theft ring they say is responsible for stealing about $300,000 worth of construction materials, copper wire, tools and other items from Home Depot, Lowes and other retailers from LaPlace to New Orleans. Many people still fixing up their homes from Katrina tell me they can't leave anything in their yard or in their gutted out home for fear someone will steal it. Recently some contractors in Lakeview told me armed men shaked them down at a job site. I remember robbers even stole the brass bannister from in front of St. Patrick's in the Warehouse District. What's going on here? We have all seen countless examples of how Katrina brought out the best in people. Are we still seeing how it can also bring out the worst in people?

It is so unfortunate that thugs such as these are taking advantage of those trying to rebuild and return to a sense of normalcy. For those that are on the fence about whether to rebuild or leave the city, having to deal with theft of materials they cannot afford in the first place and fear for their safety while simply working on their homes could be the deciding factor pushing them to leave. Authorities need to implement tighter procedures/rules for recycling companies purchasing scrap metal, copper, etc. to make it harder for thieves to resell stolen items.
