While this is a little off usual mass transit news of the Tracker, it is interesting to hear his take on renewable energy.
One area that has captured his imagination is Peak Oil. Paterson is a believer in the theory that worldwide oil reserve discoveries already reached the top of a bell curve and has started a rapid descent.
“Energy policy is inevitably a federal issue but one of the aspects of New York state government is to influence federal policy in that realm, to get away from dependence on oil,” he said. “This is the real crucial issues over the next two decades when the oil supply internationally will dwindle severely.”
He proposed that Albany itself fund research into alternative fuel supplies by New York institutions.
But, Peak Oil, is also subject to dozens of various conspiracy theories. It is also the new rallying cry of survivalists, who are still waiting for civilization to break down since global nuclear war or Y2K didn’t do it. Paterson is of the school of thought that we will see the effects of peak oil within the next 20 years.
