Guns in the workplace redux

flapril12chancolor-copy.gif

The Florida Legislature, in its wisdom, passed the Guns in the Workplace bill and Gov. Crist says he will sign it. I, for one, feel safer in my workplace because of it.

Yes, I have complete faith that a concealed weapons permit also confers the judgment, clarity of thought, and ability to make the correct decisions in high-pressure situations that we expect of all our artillerymen and -women. Fortunately, since those records are sealed, I have no way of knowing whom among my colleagues has the right to tote. That's probably a good thing, because if I did I'd be terrified.

This was a wise and timely decision in this period of economic downturn. With more homes being foreclosed on, the cost of living rising, salaries being frozen, layoffs increasing, and our supervisors demanding more of smaller staffs with less resources and slashed budgets, what better time than to have a gun handy in the office? I also think we should allow our students to carry brass knuckles, knives, and revolvers to school starting at pre-K to help them deal with stresses of bullying, test anxiety and peer pressure.

Perhaps you should read the law before commenting Lois, your sarcastic rant points to the fact that you haven't. Just as this ridiculous cartoon and Mr. Lowe's comments show the same about Mr. Lowe. So either neither of you read it or there is a comprehension problem on both of your parts.
The law DOES NOT allow guns in the workplace...it allows a licensed concealed carry permit holder to have one locked in his/her vehicle if they so choose without fear of being fired by some company that doesn't believe in your second amendment right to keep and bear arms. See, I also believe in the right to free speech, but it makes me laugh when that speech points to how ignorant some people are.

As to the records being sealed comment, again, first...amen to that, and I thank Marion Hammer for it. Secondly, may I remind you your co-workers have not been given the "right to tote" in the office, so your fears are unwarranted. Trust me... many have had the "right to tote" long before this law. Still feel terrified?

One more thing, it seems apparent that Mr. Lowe believes it's ok to shoot "catfish heads and whiskey botles" with a .45, but when it comes to defending myself with one, well in his eyes, as long as I go home and get it. Tell that to a nurse who works 3-11pm or the graveyard shift and has to go to an ATM on her dinner break. She should have to go home and get it first? And if she lives far away?
Guess she's out of luck in your view.
The second amendment doesn't say you have the right to keep and bear arms except at your employer's place of business. My rights do not end with employment.

This is just the legislature finally doing something to improve efficiency around the state. Now a newly fired disgruntled employee won't have to come back the next day to shoot up his workplace, he can just pop out to his car and pop back in.

What is the going cost for a vote these days? Just curious how the gun lobby can get these legislators to move when the rest of us can only get them to make laws on toilet paper rolls in public restrooms.

Oh yea Tom , because so many murdurous rampages have been thwarted when the person stops and realizes..."Damn, my gun isn't in my car, it's a whole 15 minutes from here, there's those damn traffic lights and stop signs, and those elderly drivers...ahhhh forget it." Point is, if they are going to do it, they are going to do it, regardless of where the gun is.
To me, this law only does me any good if I have to drive somewhere before, after or during work. It damn sure isn't going to help me if a rampaging muderer comes into my place of employment whether he ever worked there or not, because my gun will be in my car...think he'll let me go get it?

Oh really Fran? It took Marion Hammer seven years to even get licensed carry in Florida, guess they were too busy with toilet paper.

You would think as a woman you would appreciate this law. Did you hear about the recent rape of a woman in a Wal Mart parking lot, in broad daylight, the POS held a gun to her child's head the entire time. But, hey if Wal Mart doesn't want you to have a gun on their premises, your just gonna have to deal with that. But, they will gladly sell you bullets. Maybe you can throw them at the next criminal that comes your way.

Just thinking about some of the idiots that work around me scares me to think they could have a gun stashed in their car. What scares me more though are the idiots that have the guns pointed at their victims. People that have guns stored safely in their cars are not the ones to worry about. It's the psychos that have them tucked in their belts ready to whip them out to blow your face off for looking at you the wrong way!

CCW permitholders who leave their guns locked in their cars are not the ones you need to worry about.
The criminals who walk in to rob you don't care about permits, and they WON'T leave the guns in the car.

Pete nails it most succinctly. Criminals will caryy handguns wheneever and wherever they want. You think a laww allowing or disallowing this is going to change anything ? However, a law allowing is going to give law-abiding citizens a legal way to carry. And, Chan, contrary to your whint frightened post, it does not allow you to carry inside your office, as others have already pointed out.

Superman, you love this don't you? Having something to do in your spare time.

Pow wow....

Hurry officer! Joe is threatening to commit suicide! He has the hose to his head right now, and is going to fill the gas tank.
