Gay marriage amendment

FORRWEZBLOG.gif

A conventional wisdom seems to be developing that the same huge minority voter turnout that helped tip Florida into the Obama column also helped to put the "Gay Marriage Amendment" over the top, thereby enshrining discrimination in our state constitution.

If that is true, I find it puzzling that a segment of our society that so recently suffered under anti-miscegenation laws, and knows what it means to have the state step in and dictate whom one should and should not be allowed to marry, could be complicit in restricting the rights of another minority.

But, maybe it isn't true. Also, maybe I'm just dumb and am missing some key piece of logic here.

I wouldn't say your dumb. I would say, however, that you should attempt to discuss the issue seriously with opponents of gay marriage who aren't of the shrill, sandwich board, yell-in-your-windshield variety. Our arguments are stronger and more cogent than is ever represented in the media.

"I find it puzzling that a segment of our society that so recently suffered under anti-miscegenation laws..."
So you're one of those who insists on comparing gay "marriage" with interracial marriage? Like apples and watermelons?
Perhaps no one told you that marriage between races has been going on for thousands of years in the rest of the world. Please tell me how many gay "couples" have married throughout history. BTW, an interracial straight couple CAN make babies..please educate us on how two gay men can procreate!

Perhaps, no one told YOU that marriage has NOTHING to do with procreation - a fact that so many just love to ignore in their ernst to malign homosexuals. You can have children without marriage, just as you can have marriage without children. Marriage is, at our current place in history, is about a socially-recognized relationship, intimacy, companionship, commitment, and yes, about love between two human beings. Biology has NOTHING to do with it, nor does the slippery slope argument, nor does religion when talking about a government-related right. Your perspective on the history of marriage is also sadly lacking. Marriage has such a diverse, misconstrued history that's been homogenized by religion in support of their own theology. The meaning of it as understood today is not the same as understood historically. Marriage, at one time, was simply recognized as a matter of financial arrangement to combine and perpetuate wealth. So next time you find the interracial marriage and gay marriage so less comparable, try reading about bigotry and discrimination in America. You'll find there is far more similarity then apples and watermelon.

God Bless you Chan Lowe. You've struck a resounding blow on the nose of the hypocrisy of the 60 + % of Florida voters who prefer antihomosexual voting while espousing non-discrimination equality in matters of race, color or creed for everyone else. Shame on them.

I am so furious about the results with Amendment II. Change? Hardly. I am more than happy that we have a Bi-Racial President in office, thats a start, but I cannot belive the nerve of these liberals who think we are living in a free country where everyone can enjoy the same liberties. Wasn't it only 50 years ago people were denied civil liberties because of being born a certain color? Now Homosexuals are being discriminated against for the same reasons of being born a way they cannot help, nor want to. And before these discriminant people point the finger at same-sex marriages ruining "Family Values" why don't they look in the mirror and realize over 50% of heterosexual couples are getting divorced. Homophobia is a silent epidemic happenning next door and it needs to be discussed just as much as racism has been. I believe real change will come when every human being is treated justly despite their Sexual orientation, gender, and disabilities. Those are the least discussed issues at hand. Congratulations, we elected a Black Man in to Office. Now let's work on the other minorities. It's time to let Gay's embrace the same rights in Marriage. Times may be changing, but are you?

I pray that it wasn't us Mr. Lowe. And by "us" I mean black people but you never know. My rationale is basically the same as yours; how could we possibly point our fingers and tell someone who they're allowed to spend their life with when not many years ago we were outraged at being told where we could eat or buy a home or sit on a bus...

I believe in faith, lol! I think you should be allowed to practice whatever religion you see fit. But I don't think your religion gives you the right to tell me how to live my life.

Just my 2 cents.

I think many of the votes were simply mistaken. The vote required one to vote in the negative. I spoke with some young people who voted "yes" thinking that they were voting FOR gays and AGAINST the ban. True, they should have read more carefully, but, still... They intended to for against the ban.

I am a 57 yr old African American male, living in a Chicago suburb. Civil Rights mean quite a bit to me. Our struggles were fought to undo something that was written in The Constitution of the United States of America. since the civil right act was passed everyone now is on the band wagon, thats okay. The day will come when brother and sisters will want to get married,we are already marrying our pets off. The fact that a Gay person want to marry is for the benefits that heterosexual married couple have. Their being together is not a problem its the marriage. I lived civil rights and you are not missing your civil rights.

Thank you Mr. Lowe for standing up for me and my partner. I am 52 years old, have voted since I was 18, and have never voted to take something away from someone. I have supported every concept that would help someone live a life that was free of someone else's dictatorship...including "right" leaning ideals, such as firearms. My take has always been to "live and let live" as long as it was not hurting anyone.
Now, I am crushed by the blatant hatred that reduced my joy of electing Barack Obama. I never thought I would be stabbed in the back by folks that I have always supported, even marching in demonstrations where my life could have been in danger, it was always worth it to me. I am truly shocked.
