Charlie Crist and the stimulus

CRIST.gif

Editor's Note: There has been some misinterpreation of Chan's cartoon. The governor's complexion is a play on his tan, and is not meant as a racial slur.

Governor Charlie looked good the other day on Meet The Press.
Compared to Bobby Jindal, the Louisiana wunderkind who is clearly positioning himself for a presidential run in 2012 (and spent most of a minute playing a coy game of tag about it with David Gregory), Crist seemed the soul of common-sense.

Charlie said he cared more about the people of Florida than political labels, and he was going to grab the money and be grateful. "We're all Americans," he said of his support of the president (he must have been reading the Lowe-Down).

And how about that magnificent tan? I like to call Charlie the George Hamilton of Politics. With the possible exception of Arnold Schwarzenegger, never has a governor so embodied one of the bedrock industries of his state, unless you want to count that bizarre Sarah Palin interview where a turkey was being slaughtered in the background.

When Charlie casually drops the term "Sunshine State" into his conversation as a synonym for Florida, you can just imagine the shivering bluenoses Up North logging on to Travelocity for the cheapest fares.

The sad thing is, his bipartisan attitude gives him a lot of appeal as a presidential candidate, but he'll never win the Republican nomination by acting so sensible.

CHARLIE WHY DONT YOU GROW A PAIR AND STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU REPRESENT..IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE IN FLORIDA YOU SHOULD ALSO CARE ABOUT THEIR SONS,DAUGHTERS,AND GRANCHILDREN WHO WILL HAVE TO PAY THE MONEY BACK......

Love that left hand.

Actually, Charlie and Arnold have another thing in common as well: They both got elected primarily by lying about everything they believed in, praising Jeb/Ron as the greatest humans who ever lived, pledging to carry on their great work, then once elected turned out to be tree hugging populists who couldn't run fast enough from their predecessor's policies. This, of course, makes them both fairly decent governors, but I often wonder how they feel about what they had to do to get elected. Or, for that matter, how they feel about a democracy where the decks are stacked so strongly against centrist moderates that lying through your teeth is the only way to get elected.

I think that you should be asked to resign your position at the paper, its terrible to turn a good white man black, I think all white people should boycott something until this matter is resolved.

bob, have you seen Charlie Crist before? The man is darker than some black people with the tan that he has! Stop trying to make the caricature seem racist. By the way I am a black female who actually understands what Chan Lowe is saying in the blog. Did you even read it? He even mentions Crist's tan in the blog. I agree that Crist is definitely pissing off the Republicans. I must admit I'm a Democrat and I'm loving him :)

dude try your "am i a bigot?" gut check. that's blackface caricature -then you couldn't do better than a lame "ah, he's tanned". what tanning makes your lips big? man up and admit you are racist. and bob, what being "turned black" is worse than being associated with your "white ignorance"?

Amazing what some people will do for attention. There are many ways this point could have been made without the race baiting illustrations. I guess the Sentinel decided it wanted in on some of the New York Post publicity.
Rush and Hannity will love this

racist, racist, racist you people just can not let it go, you had 43 chances to get it right and you didn't just except it YOU HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT. Charlie Crist works for the people of florida if you don't want him to take the money move to ALASKA Mrs. Palin would love to have you.

I did not vote for Charlie Crist, and I did not vote for Amendment 1, which I believe is partly responsible for the Schools and Counties that are in the economic mess that there in now. But I love the fact that Charlie had enough courage & guts to be honest with his constituants and not follow the republican in-crowd. He's working for the people, all people, not just the ones that look like him or voted McCain/Palin or those who are not directly effected by the current economic downturn.

YOU MAKE ME SICK. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!!! GARBAGE IS WHAT YOU REPRESENT. YOU SHOULD BE TERMINATED. I HOPE THE SUN SENTINEL GOES BELLYUP. SHAME ON YOU FOR PROMOTING THE IGNORANCE. HEY IDIOT= P.S. CHILDREN AS SCHOOLS READ WHAT YOU PRINT.

Mr. Lowe, SHAME, SHAME, SHAME Shame on you for bringing this racist ideology into the new year!

You might want to start cleaning out your desk-drawer 'cause Sun-Sentinel must/will terminate your employment...to restore respectability to their news organization!

Chan, the whole Charlie Crist is tanned thing, is a bunch of Bull. You're trying to catch a little attention in light of the NY Post situation. Whatever happened to class? I guess you missed that lesson.

I don't care what you say to cover your tracks. This is clearly an attempt by the artist to show Gov. Crist in blackface like a minstrel man (with exagerated big, white lips) as a way of saying he's in league with President Obama. I can only hope enough of your subscribers and advertisers kick you and your newspaper to the curb. This is outrageous!

What saddens me most, is seeing
how many people jump to claim
an affront when clearly there is
none. Our country is facing so
many crises and there are many
serious discussions that need to
take place in order for us to find
suitable solutions. Mr. Lowe has
started such a discussion here. In
LAUDING Gov. Crist's position on
accepting stimulus funds, he has
given us a good look into what
things might be like if we, like
Crist, put politics aside and focused
on the good of the people. To claim
any racist slant to this cartoon is
ridiculous and a nuisance to those
of us who have joined into this
discussion with a sense of responsibility
not sensationalism. There are so many
real battles out there, my hope is that
you'll all go out and fight one. This is not the place for your misplaced anger.

Mr. Lowe, your work is consistently
honest and insightful. Thank you.

Today I cancelled my subscription to the Sun-Sentinel. To draw any Anglo in blackface (let alone the Governor) is racist and I am greatly offended. As an educator, I often bring in political cartoons for my students and needless to say, yours will no longer be among them. I have lost any respect that I ever had for you as a professional and an individual.
Small-minded bigots like you are what is wrong with the world. I'm sure you aren't in any danger of losing your job. After all, your editor approved the cartoon. Still, as you sit there, sipping coffee out of your "David Duke" coffee mug, I hope that you read these comments, you will feel some kind of remorse. Ignorance is a disease...get well soon.

After the New York Post debacle, one would think the editorial board at the sun sentinel would be more careful in it's choice of editorial cartoons. Unless, the goal is just to give a temporary boost to your declining circulation. Now I am supposed to believe this is making fun of the Governor's tan? Do me a favor, don't p---- on me then tell me its raining!!!!

To I Too Sing America,

You're an Educator?
God help our children.

Why are you so reluctant to take Mr. Lowe's editor at is word? Are you really that closed minded? Is there a small chance that you might have misread this cartoon? Is there any room for discussion here?

If this is the kind of intellectual approach that you're teaching our children, then it's people like you,
not Mr. Lowe, who are keeping closed-mindedness alive in our society. You're right about one thing; ignorance IS a
disease.

I am amazed at the number of people who claim to view Mr. Lowe's offerings regularly, yet jump at the chance to call him a racist. Chan consistently has shown a real understanding of the realities of race in this country, and has often encouraged this country to face and resolve it's issues. Regular viewers would know that.

Antonio Finns, the explanation you gave is full of crap. You knew what the cartoonist was doing. The klan hasn't changed, just different clothes.

To those of you who are suggesting that Mr. Lowe was making a racial slur in his
Crist cartoon, it might be a good idea to
delve deeper into this blog. He has archived cartoon posts from the blog's inception and they're available for your
review right here on this site. I think you'll find, as Concierge and other regular readers have, that Mr. Lowe doesn't have a racist bone in his body. To the contrary, he has contributed substantially to the debate on race in this country, advocating tolerance consistently and convincingly. He is one of the brightest cartoonists in the nation and has won the respect and admiration of many, many open-minded people.

I liked the words that Crist said for the most part, but I didn't believe in his authenticity as he said them. He seemed rather hollow to me. His body language registered with me as a studied semblance of sincerity, rather than the genuine article.

Then again, that might just have been him triangulating a sensible course between the Scylla of the Republican party and the Charybdis of naked political ambition.

This is a disgrace. Crawl back under the racist rock that you crawled out from under. We don't need newspapers such as yours in this country.

This "cartoon" and others like it show why the Repugnican party is shrinking daily. This is not "a play on Crist's tan". Your cartoon calls Crist Obama's lapdog, yet he is not portrayed as a dog with the governor's head, OR sitting in Obama's lap. He is portrayed as wearing blackface. Your stupid denials and lame attempts at explanation don't change the racist meaning of the cartoon. Everyone with an IQ higher than room temperature sees it for what it really is, and is disgusted by it. The majority of the country has moved beyond bigotry. Those of you who haven't need to GET OVER IT OR GET LOST!

Is this what newspapers facing bankruptcy have to do to garner attention in hopes of selling a few more editions? Utterly pathetic!

Okay, why not try this. STOP! I cannot remember any president that held office receive so much DISRESPECT. God created all mankind and He can take our last breath at His Will. How about we think beyond ourselves and think of others first. It should not matter if we are regular readers of Mr. Chan's or not this is not the time in our history to do whatever we want no matter what or whom it offends. We should try living our daily lives for the growth of our Nation to accept what God is trying to do for us; He's giving America another chance at being the people He created for the good of one and ALL.

It's hard to believe with all of the noise about the NY Post caricature that Mr. Chan was oblivious to the sensitivity of such a projection. The history and symbolism of black face alone should have been a clear indicator that this sort of over exaggeration was not necessary. Why not just leave him white? Everyone knows he has a tan. Good luck Mr. Chan on trying to convince most sane americans that you had no idea this would cause a stir.

In a few moments, my husband and I will be watching President Obama give his Address to Congress. We are excited about all that he has achieved thus far, and are looking forward to what we strongly believe will be a new beginning for this country and our world.

I have read all of the comments above and cannot help but say a few words to those who have taken offense at the drawing of Charlie Crist.

In 1999, I married a wonderful man. One of the things that has made our union particularly joyful over the past ten years is the fact that our families have come together as one. You see, we both come from bi-racial backgrounds. Today, both of our immediate families include African- American and Caucasian members. We honor our differences. We stand firm against racism.

If Charlie Crist looks like a Black man
to some of you, then I think my husband Chan Lowe, (in an attempt to emphasize the Governor's tan), inadvertently applied too much shading to Charlie's face.

My husband is not a racist. Of this I am
certain.

i find it funny that one commment is made tongue in cheek about an editorial cartoon which for years has always drawn people out of porportion and it sets off a firestorm of racist remarks,
welldone america I see nothing has changed.

Poor "Mista Charlie!" He wants to do a GOOD thing for the state, but many of the good caucasian people would rather do without stimulus money from a BLACK man! Bankruptcy and/or cutbacks in firemen and policemen is more appealing!!!
