If I had gotten drunk and driven off a pier, killing a coed, and then left the scene instead of getting help, I would have deservedly spent a good deal of time in prison. I doubt I would have been rewarded with a lifetime job as senator.

Lolly, that, to me, says you aren't rich and well connected. Just recently we had a pro football player get 30 days for manslaughter. You and I wouldn't have gotten that deal either.

I think Kennedy made amends for things he did that we all look down upon. Only now will he be facing his maker and his past. While I never agreed with his politics or lifestyle 100%, I can appreciate the good that he did for our society as a whole.

I hope, for an eternity, he has to struggle w/ the door handle underwater and it never opens for him...over and over and over and over again. God bless Mary Jo.

I agree with Suzanne, Chan has written a perfect thought regarding Ted Kennedy and his passing. And a great drawing too!

First, I was an old-fashioned liberal, of the Harry Truman, Adlai Stevenson, Hubert Humphrey variety. And, yes, I believe that Ted Kennedy had a distinguished career in the Senate.

That being said, starting in 1968, I saw the word "liberal" being preempted by a bunch of trendy dilletantes who, in that year, refused to back Humphrey, thus giving Nixon his first term, and who, 4 years later, gave us the McGovern candidacy, thus guaranteeing Nixon a second term. They abandoned the Democrats' traditional consituency of the working class and labor to become the party of the upper-middle-class cocktail party circuit.

When people ask me my political categorization, I say that I'm either in the Religious Left or the Radical Center.

I used to watch the Senate proceedings on C-Span, and, one time I saw Kennedy defend Clinton's executive order barring government contracts to companies that permenantly replace striking workers. When he said that this practice gives employers no incentive to bargain honestly, he quoted Cardinal O'Connor, who was Archbishop of New York (and who, himself, died of brain cancer). That was old-fashioned liberalism.

That is either a cartoon symbolizing the bar and liquor store owners in Palm Beach, or some woman from the lower class left out side the American justice system because she tried to level abuse charges against a very high ranking member of the democrat party or his family.

Mary Jo Kopechne was killed after Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge with her inside

Mary Jo was in the back seat and, while he claimed he was just giving her a lift back to her hotel, it was widely thought that he had picked her up for sex. Kennedy swam ashore to save himself, but left Mary Jo to drown - in fact, it was even worse than that.

It was nine hours before he reported the accident. In the meantime, he walked back to his motel, complained to the manager about a noisy party, took a shower, went to sleep, ordered newspapers when he woke up and spoke to a friend and two lawyers before finally calling the police.

Divers later estimated that if he had called them immediately, they would have had time to pull out Mary Jo. She had not drowned, but had survived in an air pocket inside the car - she was asphyxiated only when the oxygen ran out several hours later.

As always, Ted used the family name to save his neck. In any other state but Massachusetts, the Kennedys' home turf, and with any other name, he would have been charged with homicide.

Instead, he escaped with a slap on the wrist: a two-year suspended sentence and the loss of his driving licence for a year. He had been allowed to plead guilty to no more than the charge of leaving the scene of an accident.

Teddy get's no sympathy from me.
