Chan Lowe cartoon: Our president, right or wrong

unamerican.gifSome of the recent comments about Barack Obama by readers of this blog have bordered on the kind of talk that gets one a knock on the door from the Secret Service. One of my commenters even posted on our weather blog , fantasizing about the president’s helicopter getting caught in a hurricane.

I’ll paraphrase my response to someone who sneeringly referred to Obama as “your” president (meaning mine): Even though it was unseemly that the person who officially certified the Florida vote count in 2000 also happened to be chairwoman of the Bush Florida campaign, we accepted George W. Bush as president because the Supreme Court ultimately decided in his favor. Some had to swallow pretty hard, but it’s the law, and we are a nation of laws.

I was angry at Bush when we found out there were no WMDs in Iraq. I was ashamed of him in the aftermath of Katrina. I was disgusted by him when the news about the torture of prisoners came out. But I never once thought he wasn’t my president. We can disagree with him, we can try to influence his behavior through public involvement, but in the end, he’s the only leader we’ve got until his term is up. That’s why we have terms.

In the meantime, those who say of Obama that “he isn’t my president” for whatever reasons should buck up and face reality. He was elected fair and square by the majority. In this country, the majority rules.

As we approach the eighth anniversary of 9/11, it is instructive to remember that George W. Bush’s approval rating soared to ninety per cent afterward, which means even those who felt he stole the election rallied around him as our head of state—the embodiment, for better or worse, of the American people. They may not have liked him, but they accepted him.

I doubt the same would happen if, God forbid, another such tragedy befell us. Those who feel Barack Obama is not their president would be too busy blaming him for doing a lousy job protecting us as chief executive.

It's funny, you act like this hasn't been happening for the past 8 years, but only in reverse. I believe Randy Rhodes asked for Bush to be shot. They even made a movie about his assignation. If you just read other message boards you would see all the comments about "Bush isn't my president". To make this seem one-sided is disingenuous at best.

Of course President Obama is our President and every 4 years you have a chance to do something about it.

Of course we all accept Obama as our President. But, there is a difference between accepting him as our President and being a mindless puppet of the Obama administration. He already won the election. You can stop kissing his rear end now, Mr. Lowe.

Obviously Graphx and Glenn
haven't really been paying attention. The tone of discourse has reached an all-time low in the country. Glenn chooses to describe Chan's support of the president as "kissing his rear end." Now that's keeping the conversation on a mature level. Come on. Clean it up!

Chan,

Let me first start off by saying I am absolutley flattered that my inspiration has caused you to do up this caracature. (You must be running dry my friend because that was 2 days ago)
First of all, graphx beat me to the punch. The past 8 years there were, T-shirts, bumper stickers, mugs, flags, and just about anything you can stick a picture on that had "Not my President" labeled beneath a picture of George Bush. Go to any novelty shop or mall to find out..
Yes, there were not WMD's in Iraq however there was much worse. There was Al-Qaeda. It's a proven fact that the person who attacked us on 9/11 was involved heavily with Al-Qaeda. It's also a proven fact that 70-75% of Al-Qaeda was based in Iraq. Most people look back (such as yourself)and now see it as being a poor decision to go to war. However, (as you reported) after the attacks happened 90% of all Americans felt we had to go to war to stop this enemy (which led to his 90% approval rating). Bin Laden was in Afghanistan, however the organization he followed was based in Iraq.
Next, I think all parties (Republican and Democrat) we're upset on how Katrina went down. However, it's difficult to have any idea of what type of destruction to expect when the dust settles and I believe you can "pop in" any president and there would have been problems.
Don't even get me started on torture of terrorists. In my opinion they haven't been tortured enough. When you're dealing with a group of terrorists that beat women, kill women, and behead anyone that disagrees with them, I tend to not have any compassions.
You say he won fair and square and I say that I want to see a certified birth certificate showing he was born in the states.

We do not have to wait until his term is up. He can very easily lose the faith of this nation and be impeached. He has the lowest approval rating a president has ever had in there first 8 months of office with no signs of rising. People are looking past the "smooth talking" guy and taking a look at what he's doing.

I must say though, Chan, this is fun. Thanks again for the shout-out and don't take your readers so seriously. After all, we're all in this together.:)

Chan Hater,

I don't know if I should laugh or cry. I'm a Republican and, for the first time, horrified by what people like you are saying. Are you honestly this stupid,
or are you just trying to pick a fight? I didn't vote for Obama, and may not be his biggest fan, but your statements about Iraq and Al Quaeda are "numbing." I'm sorry, but you're wrong in so much you write about, I have to assume that you're joking, or just filled with an unbridled hatred for Black people.

Victor,

Do I even reply to a guy that says "Al Quaeda".. You're very quick to use insults however have no facts to back it up.. You sound like a liberal in sheeps clothing...

Chan Hater,

Thank you for correcting my spelling error.

Although your spelling's better than your grammar, you
might want to check these 6 errors of yours:

absolutley
caracature
WMD's
we're (versus were)
compassions
there first 8 months (their)

Then, when you're ready, try
to make an intelligent comment instead of spewing your garbage.

Victor: LOL-- love the smackdown.

Chan Hater: I'm your huckleberry. Want to debate facts? Let me go down that twisted rabbit hole you call fact:

Yes, there were not WMD's in Iraq however there was much worse. There was Al-Qaeda. It's a proven fact that the person who attacked us on 9/11 was involved heavily with Al-Qaeda. It's also a proven fact that 70-75% of Al-Qaeda was based in Iraq.

Did you know that Al-Qaeda isn't just one group? Did you know that Al-Qaeda is many different groups operating with the same name? Did you also know that the reason for invading was NOT to go after Al-Qaeda? Check your sources again. Al-Qaeda's presence in Iraq was NEVER EVEN DISCUSSED until we had invaded under the failed premise of WMD's. And even if that was the case, the AQ cell operating in Iraq never attacked us-- it was the cell that WAS and (thanks to an incompetent president bush) STILL IS led by Osama Bin Laden. To mix these two by twisting fact and well established intelligence reports is as pathetic as your claim to birth cert rights (more on that later).

Most people look back (such as yourself)and now see it as being a poor decision to go to war. However, (as you reported) after the attacks happened 90% of all Americans felt we had to go to war to stop this enemy (which led to his 90% approval rating).

We all wanted Bin Laden's head-- and BUSH FAILED TO DELIVER. FAILURE-- PERIOD! Bin Laden was not and has never been in Iraq, Americans wanted him, not Hussein. Stop twisting facts.

Bin Laden was in Afghanistan, however the organization he followed was based in Iraq.

Followed? Maybe you missed the last few years, but Bin Laden is THE LEADER-- NUMERO UNO of HIS AQ cell. The cell in Iraq is NOT the same cell. Nor is the one in Indonesia or Thailand for that matter. Read some congressional testimony for once, will ya? Then again, could I expect you to understand the complexities of war when you are incapable of deciphering the truth from what Drudge, Fox and the NR give you?

Next, I think all parties (Republican and Democrat) we're upset on how Katrina went down. However, it's difficult to have any idea of what type of destruction to expect when the dust settles and I believe you can "pop in" any president and there would have been problems.

Are you kidding me? I was in Cutler Ridge when Andrew destroyed everything in 1992. And you know what? We didn't have that kind of stupidity down here! And do you know why? Because the President then was far more competent than Bush was during Katrina. Now tell me, do YOU know who president was back then? Give you a hint: maybe Bush shoulda called daddy for some FEMA handling advice.
There is NO excuse for that debacle that bad management created after Katrina-- NONE.

Don't even get me started on torture of terrorists. In my opinion they haven't been tortured enough. When you're dealing with a group of terrorists that beat women, kill women, and behead anyone that disagrees with them, I tend to not have any compassions.

For once, we agree.

You say he won fair and square and I say that I want to see a certified birth certificate showing he was born in the states.

You're kidding right? Let's see, the director of health services in Hawaii has opened a sealed vault, and a vaccum sealed document to hold in his hand a certificate of live birth, so that he could attest to the media and in two separate lawsuits, TWICE, that the records are, in fact, valid. The chief auditor of the National Library of Congress has also done the same and attested to wit to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice of the SCOTUS has audited all records himself and given the oath of office to this president, and YOU, some lowly coward hiding behind a keyboard in your mommy's basement still don't believe the facts of record? I guess you won't be satisfied until the almighty himself comes down to smack some sense into you then? So lets agree to disagree and please-- bear in mind the SCOTUS has already rejected hearing this challenge TWICE before uttering more of your jibberish.

A YouTube link as a factual basis? How pathetic is that? Or did you not know that ANYONE can post ANYTHING to YouTube? Try posting credible media sources please.

We do not have to wait until his term is up. He can very easily lose the faith of this nation and be impeached. He has the lowest approval rating a president has ever had in there first 8 months of office with no signs of rising. People are looking past the "smooth talking" guy and taking a look at what he's doing.

Really? Good luck with that because while "those polled" may disagree, I'm pretty sure it is a far cry from the majority that elected him to begin with.

I must say though, Chan, this is fun. Thanks again for the shout-out and don't take your readers so seriously. After all, we're all in this together.:)

And stuck with uneducated ignorants like you that have nothing better to do than posting ignorant drivel on the internet that some other ignorant will come along, read, and believe. It's almost embarassing to think of myself as even partway conservative.

I think the focus on what we need most in this country needs to change. We desperately need better education in this country. The empirical evidence is right here on this blog. 70-75% of Al Qaeda was based in Iraq? It’s not a fact it’s just kowtowing to an ideology. Afghanistan was the base of operation for Al Qaeda and the right move as far as attacking the people who attacked us. Al Qaeda wasn’t in Iraq prior to the invasion, Weapons of Mass Destruction were not in Iraq at the time of the invasion but somehow we are now.

I think that all the folks that call those of us who DO NOT support Obumm raceist are forgetting that we don't support his WHITE HALF either.

People are so hair trigger ready to blame the President for everything.

They don't take into mind he has eight years of mess to clean up.

President Obama isn't Sam the witch who can twitch his nose instantaneously making things like new.

Your kidding when you say that you accepted Bush right? If so, I don't buy it. I have seen and heard everything from Death watches to out and out lies about Bush and his family. If you're going to trash somebody, at least have the guts to stand behind it later Chan. From the sound of some of these posts some of these folks must be hanging out with Bin Ladin in order to verify where he was or wasn't at any particular time. For all of you who are stating "facts" about where he or any other terrorist organization is located, you should get a job at the defense department because they haven't been able to figure that out for some time now. But then, ever since the 2000 election everybody seems to know everything thanks to the supposed "news" shows on tv each night.

The reason why we had 8 years of trouble was because liberals and Democrats were constantly bringing down the President's agenda. They recruited Cindy Sheehan to nag the former president (and now they condemn her vehemently when she protested against Obama- a testimony about the double standards or, rather, the lack of standards by the liberals). The fact is, the liberals refused to cooperate for 8 years and spread rumors like wild-fire and now they have the gall to silence Obama's critics? What a shame!

@Victor:

You assume that anybody who opposes Pres.Obama does so because of racism. How stupid and unthinking. I oppose his socialist policies the same way I opposed former Pres.Clinton's liberal policies. If Pres.Obama had been conservative and Sen.McCain had been liberal Democrat, I would have voted for then-Sen.Obama. My first choice was hoping that Condi Rice would run, but she didn't. I would have gladly voted for her. That's right, HER! A woman AND an African-American by heritage. I also would have voted for Alan Keyes, J.C.Watts, or Michael Steele (whom I put on my list even before he was picked for GOP head). So you can take YOUR racist "evil-eye" and stick it in the compost heap of your ancient ways. Don't make that assumption anymore. You know what assuming does to you, right? :-)

Mike:
In response to your comment, "You assume that anybody who opposes Pres. Obama does so because of racism."--
No, I do not make that assumption.
My comment was to "Chan Hater"
and "Chan Hater" alone. And, for the record, when he responded to my statement within an hour's time--he chose to correct my spelling, not to correct my "assumption."

If this partisan clown Chan Lowe would have just read the papers, then he would know that Bush won by 1,665 votes — more than triple his official 537-vote margin . This is according to USA TODAY, The Miami Herald and Knight Ridder newspapers who hired the national accounting firm BDO Seidman. They are not conservative papers by a long shot, the argument can be made they wanted Bush to lose. The funny thing is the way that Gore wanted the ballots recounted helped Bush gain more votes. So for whatever reason, and I think I know what it is, its Lowe himself that should buck up and face reality.

To Dave:

This is what Chan Lowe wrote above:
"Even though it was unseemly that the person who officially certified the Florida vote count in 2000 also happened to be chairwoman of the Bush Florida campaign, we accepted George W. Bush as president because the Supreme Court ultimately decided in his favor. Some had to swallow pretty hard, but it’s the law, and we are a nation of laws."

Lowe did not discuss vote "margins" or anything that you've suggested in your comment.

Try this: read, form your thoughts and then write. I'm sure you have a worthy opinion. I'm just not sure you're approaching this in a clear-headed way.

"In this country, the majority rules". If this is so true, why then is Obama trying to force government insurance on the majority of citizens who do not want it? Hmmm...

Ed:
Obama is not trying to force
government insurance on anybody. Having a government option might allow us to keep insurance companies competitive with their pricing. Obama has never proposed some kind of government "takeover" of health insurance. Let's hear him out.
Alright? I, like many, are still waiting for a Republican plan/solution to the current health care crisis. None has been presented. If we all desire a bipartisan solution, then please let's ask for the Republican opposition to present us with some of their ideas. The attacks, for the sake of attack, are utterly useless.

@Victor,
You can't expect to respond to any one person on a public forum such as this.
I already understood "Chan Hater" was not correcting your assumption, I was. I've heard that accusation of racism from other people trying to base any opposition to Pres.Obama as only from white "kuntry folks" who can't stand a person of color as President. Frankly I would not care if he was red, yellow, green, or orange. As a famous person said in 1963, the content of a person's character is how we should be judged, not the color of skin.

Victor said, "I have to assume that you're joking, or just filled with an unbridled hatred for Black people."

Did you really think he was joking? :-)

Goodnight!

You can't expect to respond to any one person on a public forum such as this.

Mike: You're kidding right? You're telling somebody that you can't address a single poster on a public forum when you yourself are doing that very action with the post I quoted above?

Based on that and the other posts it appears you are being argumentative to no constructive end.

It is really sad that people with internet access can still be so misinformed. After years of postwar analysis, a 9/11 commission report, documented inside information and military whistle blowers, nothing sinks in. Ten minutes of google searches plus an open mind would refute the false claims made by Chan Hater.

The last 8 years nearly bankrupted us. Why can't we unite and work together to repair the damage? Enough with the partisan bickering and name-calling. There may be two sides to a story, but there is only one set of facts.

Hey Chan--

http://teenormous.com/go?id=Wear-Your-Beer-Not-My-President-Bush-Fat-Wreck-Chords-Black-TShirt--14662

This shirt has been out for a long time, however, I've checked all your archives and I do not seem to see any horrible drawing defending this "sneering" (your word) T-shirt. Hmmmmmm... wonder why??

chan hater, the difference is that Bush is not our president. The shirt makes a true statement.

Much of the stimulus plan was done before Obama got into office, was done bipartisanly, and is set up to get repaid by those that got those government loans.

So, to blame Obama for a decision that wouldhave occurred even with McCain in office is foolish or disingenuous, which is it?
