Chan Lowe: The Great Recession

genome.gifIn addition to the more apparent consequences of high unemployment, the Great Recession has resulted in a tragic waste of human talent.

Embedded in the arid statistics and monthly up-and-down jobs figures lie real stories of people who have spent a lifetime acquiring priceless experience, training and wisdom in their fields and whose intellectual wealth is now lost to the rest of us.

They are forced to settle, underutilized, for whatever they can find to feed themselves and their families. And those are the lucky ones.

Meanwhile, the financial cowboys who galloped off into the unregulated Wild West of exotic financial instruments and whose greed engendered the whole mess haven’t missed a meal or an hour of sleep.

In fact, the their first brazen order of business (as our forever-scarred nation painfully recovers) has been to award themselves bonuses for their achievements⎯flaunting their conviction that the word “conscience” resides only in the vocabulary of so-called lesser beings.

This is apropos of your comment about consciences. Richard III, the only Shakespeare villain with no redeeming qualities, said: "Conscience is a word that cowards use."

Your stuff is usually very funny, but this one makes me cry!

The Great Recession-That's when you lose your job..It's a Great Depression when I lose mine.! Ah- The schematic question-that;s the rub.
So many people are underemployed,overqualified..working 2 or 3 jobs, just to make ends meet.(young & old alike)Our grandson has a 4 degree plus a M B A in business & is working on his Ph.d in Physiology.And.? He works part-time as a waiter-"Do you want fries with that.Unless we start manufacturing again,we're in trouble.Carter slightly opened the door to deregulation, with the help of Paul Volker.Reagan opened the door all the way, taking deregulation to new depths.Clinton smashed the door down with the repeal of the Glass-Stegal law. Then lets not go into the fiasco with W.! Is it any wonder people are mad & frustrated.? Obama better have a magic rabbit to pull out of the hat-or we'll all be "passing the hat" to make a living.

But you still don't understand!!! Fix healthcare and you fix everything, right?????

I've missed you-hope you weren't sick...
Shine up your eye glasses, and re-read what I wrote..Manufacturing,unemployment,Recession,etc,etc,is the topic I wrote about and what Chan's cartoon was all about. We'll leave health care for another day.Anyway, glad to see you back.Have a great day.!!

So Barry O, are you saying we might be able to better compete in manufacturing if health-care cost were taken out of the employment cost equation?

Mrs. Wagner!! (Meshugenah). I have been out of the country on business. As for my post, I was simply joking. After all, the way that healthcare reform has been sold to the American People (if you pass it, all of our problems are over)!! I would start with major tort reform and interstate competition for insurance companies. And, no primary care for illegal immigrants (unless of a life or death circumstance).

BARRY O (the mavin)
So- away on business,huh.?
Let me guess..
Big Pharma ? Health Ins. co.?
Medical supplies? Lobbyist?
Hmmm-Very interesting !!Glad to see you back--Catch you again in Chan's "Sand-Box"

The Mavin - lol I love it.
