Chan Lowe: Rick Scott, American hero

Without even trying, Florida Gov. Rick Scott could turn out to be a national hero.

That’s right, after a mere seven months in office, he’s become so unpopular in the Sunshine State that he’s now a liability to his party. The Republican hierarchy is worried that, thanks to his abuses, Floridians in November of 2012 will fail to pull the lever for the Republican nominee at all, or worse, vote for Obama in retaliation.

There is no strategy for a Republican to win the required number of electoral votes next year without taking Florida. In effect, Scott may singlehandedly save feckless Obama-hating Americans from accidentally electing the likes of a Bachmann or a Palin.

Whatever you may think of Barack Obama⎯that he doesn’t belong in the White House because he’s a minority, or he’s a socialist, or he’s foreign-born or whatever⎯at least he’s reasonably competent. You may blame him for not getting us out of the economic slump by now, but nobody really knows for sure whether the mess he was handed wasn’t so horrendous that even John Maynard Keynes himself couldn’t have righted the ship in two and a half years. That isn’t a great deal of time, considering it took eight years to get us into it.

Do you want Michele Bachmann, who wants Democrats in Congress investigated for their un-American views, who doesn’t know the Battle of Lexington was fought in Massachusetts, who preaches federal fiscal restraint while collecting subsidies for her farm, to have her hands on the levers of the economy? Or Sarah Palin, who would probably sell DVDs of The Undefeated out of a kiosk off the West Wing?

Since half of the nation is unable to see through its fog of hatred for the president, maybe we should rejoice that there are Rick Scotts around to save us from ourselves. Great men have always miraculously appeared when our country most needed them…and that, you might say, it what makes America so exceptional.

Please compare the trend of the Florida economy, FL public spending, FL programs to bring businesses back to the state to create jobs with what Obama is doing. I'd take Rick Scott and and an improving state over Obama who appears to have given up on getting the car out of the ditch and decided to set it on fire. Look at useless taxpayer funded jobs that were cut in FL, the decrease in unemployment, and luring business to the state with what the president has accomplished. And seriously, Keynesian economics? That's what Obama tried and it failed. Look at the results, or at least how they are currently trending. WAKE UP! Even if you're a liberal, wouldn't you rather be employed?

Mr. Lowe couldn't have said it better! Rather than drug testing welfare recipients, punishing teachers, and handing out better terms to the insurance carriers, Mr. Scott would better have accepted High Speed Rail Funds.

The Governor and Legislature should consider a 2% income tax on residents earning over $250,000/year, thereby assuring a reliable tax source to the State. Rather than depending on real estate taxes and sales taxes that constantly fluctuate.

More money should be earmarked for higher education and technical schooling, thereby improving Florida's workforce.

i love when liberals list so many reasons why the economy is so bad...but never list Obama's economic policies as a reason.

i also love when residents of broward, like our contributor ronald here, blame governor scott for broward's teacher problems...but never the school board or union (since they are democratically controlled i guess)...ronald...why is palm beach handing out bonuses to their teachers & not firing anyone? since you blame scott for broward's you give him credit for palm beach?

Scott Walker...remember him? Wisconsin governor that all you libs were crying about how his conservative policies were going to leave teachers under bridges & kids w/o any books? in one school district alone...JUST ONE OF MANY...they went from a $400K deficit to $1.5 Million dollar surplus...and are hiring new teachers!! wow, imagine that?!?

all your democrat doom & gloom scare tactics are completely empty. Scott will have our state on the same track Wisconsin matter how hard you guys try to keep us down.

obama loses to any repub running against him...any repub is better than this guy

Folks, whatever you believe about liberals, Obama (who is not a liberal - just check with the libs to see if they like him), and dems, putting our governor in the same sentence with any modern leader is just living in denial. Whatever you think making cuts leads to, you DO NOT understand how an economy works. His policies, along with the largely Republican legislature, are driving up the cost of living in Florida during a down economy. You may believe that reducing your property taxes by $25 a year, while giving huge breaks to large corporations (who are not hiring), somehow improves the local economy. Other corps open new businesses here based on the average consumer's ability to spend. That's how they make money and that's how they create jobs. When you get your new insurance bill, don't wonder why people continue to leave. Don't wonder why businesses continue to close. For gasoline, we are paying 20 to 30 cents a gallon more than any neighboring states. We are exeriencing an increased cost of living as a result. And if you think raising the sales tax (that's all that's left) will magically save the economy, that will just drive more people away. Too bad you didn't get it before all this started. but you will. Hopefully enough people who understand economics annd free-freethinking will stay to make the necessary corrections. I'll be here!

Think of the majority of working people in Florida. They have incomes of less than $50,000 and there was not one piece of legislation this year that was helpful or beneficial to them, not counting small property tax decreases that will be subsumed by the enormous homeowner's insurance increases. In fact, quite a lot was passed was harmful. Having idealistic goals and moving toward making business better is all well and good, but how many people have been stepped on while you're trying to get there? I would almost vote for anyone if it would mean taking power away from this man and his Death Eaters in the Legislature.

WHAT?? Do you think if you call him "umpopular" enough times it will stick?

Got news for ya , Rick Scott is "NOT" unpopular to anyone who isnt a liberal, give away the store, Union conditioned, couldnt walk in a straight line leftest!!...There are plenty of us who adore the what he is doing and would vote for him in a heartbeat again tomorrow..
Old Chan might want to crawl off his "huffington post" polls and look at the real world..
Scott signed his first "death warrant" ..gonna get rid of this beast August 2. Finally a Governor with a backbone..
Governor Scott is doing everything he said he would do and it works for me!!!!!

Well, then Pragmatist, you've stated exactly what I believe. You do not understand economics. You've simply bought into what your TV tells you to believe. Things will have to change in defense of the common man or you will understand personally how economics work. So, you'll get it, one way or another. Let me ask you this: how many new businesses are headed to Detroit?

Florida is a republican dominated state and has been for a few years, and the republican agenda has given us a worse recession than the the country as a whole and we are slower to get out of it than the rest of the country. Our state already has extremely low costs of doing business and yet we practically had to bribe scripps and max planck to come here. And it will stay that way until we get serious about educating our youth, because high tech companies need smart people to work for them and you don't find smart people where the dropout rate is one of the highest in the nation

Nick ..wake up buddy..Where have you been? In case you havent noticed Democrats have been ruling the house and Senate since 2006, so everything that comes down the pike can be layed in their lap, You might want to catch up on "growth of States" while your at it. Texas is number one, Florida is number two Despite Obama and his poor excuse for a Presidency. Rick Perry and Governor Scott both bucked Obama policies and their states have higher growth. No our state is not on the "extremely Low cost of doing business". Rick Scott had to basically stand off with Obama and the dems to make Florida "business friendly" even take it so far as filing suits against him.
Our Youth are under educated due to a dismal poor, Publically funded, Union protected collection of Hacks, who spend more time on their "benefit pages" than teaching our children and where fraud and Nepotism reign supreme.
The old "throw money at it and see what sticks" way of doing business has left the building. Time to dismantle the education system, do away with Protectionisms and make those who derive their living off the backs of the public, accountable..

Pragmatist, the state legislature has been republican dominated for years. Growth is slow and is in direct contrast to the increasing cost to live here. We are paying more for gas and insurance than most states. Get your head out of the sand. Just check R$'s approval ratings and you'll see he's not popular, even with the people who elected him.

He was one of the conservatives’ great hopes, too. He had swagger. He also boasted impeccable credentials, having played a Manhattan district attorney on Law & Order for several years. As it turned out, once he was on the stump he didn’t have much gravitas.
