Meet Walt Handelsman

Walt Handelsman is the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist for Newsday. He joined the paper in February of 2001.

Before that, Walt worked for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans from 1989-2001, The Scranton (PA) Times from 1985-1989, and a chain of 13 Baltimore and Washington suburban weeklies from 1982-1985.

Walt, 51, a graduate of The University of Cincinnati, creates cartoons that appear in over 200 newspapers around the country and internationally. They are frequently reprinted in Newsweek, USA Today, The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune.

In early 2006, Walt taught himself Flash animation and now creates animated editorial cartoons that are viewed by zillions of fans across the Internet.

In addition to Handelsman’s two Pulitzers, he has also been awarded two National Headliner Awards, the Society of Professional Journalists Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, The Scripps Howard National Journalism Award and The 2007 Online News Association's Best Online Commentary Award for his animations.

He is the author of eight collections of his editorial cartoons as well as a children’s book published in 1995.

He lives with his wife, Jodie, and two sons, James and Billy, on Long Island.

Walt, this was sent to me....and it would be me...age 61 grandma and started my third career last year www.grammology.com a blog for grandmothers. Hoping we can do more the family and kids. There seems to be a lot missing in the area of role models for these kid...unless you consider Nicole Smith or Brittney Spears a role model?

made me laugh, during my day job where I sell commercial real estate...
Thanks
Dorothy from grammology
remember to call your grandma

Dear Walt;

This was sent to me by a very close friend. I was wondering.....perhaps by some chance, do you know of anyone who would be interested in a recent graduated of the Savannah College of Art and Design looking for an entry level job anywhere in the U.S. as a 3-D animator? Perhaps you can help us out? This job would be for my son, Jared. It would also help if you know anyone who could possibly use an intern in this field. He graduated SCAD with a GPA in excess of 3.0 with a minor in sequential art. He is desperately looking for any entry level position. Thanks for your possible help.

How wonderful! You really captured our generation. We boomers will never slow down! Thanks for the fun.

Great animation! Funny, relevant, witty. Keep up the good work.

Are you any relation to Bud Handelsman, a cartoonist for the NEW YORKER? We were friends way back then.

I'm sending this to my BB children who are now grandparents.

As for me, I'm off to Panama with my husband (who is 91) on a cruise, where we will swim and bike all day and dance the tropical nights away. No health complaints here.

I loved it, made my day, I just laughed and laughed, now I have to forward to all my fellow boomers. Thanks

I am 59 yes a baby boomer and you are the best. To laugh out loud when alone is rare for me but beside my cousin you accomplished that. Thank you

Walter, you probably don`t remember me my name is Marvin Cohn. I am Alan Cohn`s father and was the coach of the Midget Level Little League Baseball team that both you and Alan were on. Congratulations on your awards.

Yes, yes, yes and yes! Between self and friends....can just about check every box. What a masterpiece! THANK YOU!

Walt,
This was one of the best animations I have seen. Loved the music since
I am a with a blues band and a baby boomer myself. Great Job. Smiled through the whole thing. Roberta Chadis from Salem, Massachusetts

Walt -

This was sent to me by an old friend. Too bad I'm too young to understand it! ;-)

Wonderful! I laughed so hard, almost had to change my diaper ... from TM (age 57), Amherst, Mass.

Walt,
LOL, how 'bout making one for Gen X of which I am a member of (age 38)

loved this laughed and smiled through the whole song and it is so true. Are you selling a copy of this by chance, great... I have sent it on to many of my boomer friends and know they will enjoy it. Thanks

Dear Walt,

Recieved e-mail from 50 something friend.(funny and sad). I'm 40. A biproduct of parents way older than yours I suspect. My father was a bombaderr in WWII, were he alive today he'd have been 93. As a late bloomer; thier history rings ture in my heart and mind. If you can do anything, please find a way through animation to show story of history which gives credit to everything our parents generation has worked for. I hope you might realize respect for history and not be like masses.

Best Regards,

jen

ps congrats on work and accomplishments. I hope you remember and are able to reflect the true story -

You are so talented and love this. Laughter is so good for the soul maybe it will keep us younger longer.

Great cartoons! How can I get you daily?? My cousin sent me your blog and with my web setup I can't figure how to keep you online as a favorite. Also were are related to the Max Handlesman family originally from Youngstown,Ohio who owned a butchershop!!!

As a Flower Child whose petals have withered and whose leaves are falling, "Born, Tubby, Mild" is just the thing to play to psyc me up before I going for a ride on my GoldWing Trike!

just had a great laugh and will send this one around to my email list.....feel like it's been full circle, Still have your cartoon of the cycle. took out loans to pay my college tuition. Still reading your cartoons and now look forward to your video treats as well. We love you. m....lee and jesse

Hi Walt,

Just a note from your old New Orleans Friend. Teddy's gone, but she would have loved your Boomer production... Hope all is well with you and yours.

In Harmony, Sherwood

Thank you, thank you! I have been a fan of editorial cartoons since I was a kid in the 50's & 60's. Even though back then I might not have totally understood them, I sensed there was something funny about them that I needed to know about. Love your stuff so keep it coming! As hard as it is at times, we need to laugh!

Rick McNamer

55yr. old "Boomer"

I would like to receive your blog. I laughed til I cried reading your babyboomer cartoons.
Thank you

Walt, you are adorable....thanks for making a movie
of my life. Keep up the great work...
Oh to be talented!! Maybe in my next life.

Best Sheila.

What creative brilliance. I LOVED your BORN, TUBBY, MILD...You're either very insightful, or you planted a camera in our house. Thanks!!

Love, love, love your sense of humor...can't believe you are so young. All of my crowd is turning sixty this year and you have definitely tickled our funny bones. Now I am off to Barnes and Noble to buy your books! Thanks for the laughs!

Thanks for a great laugh! I'm just past the babyboomers (nearly 64) but I keep young and take many great suppliments each day. So does my 75 year old husband. People can't believe we are soooo young.

Just a note of thanks or the "Born, Tubby, Mild" animation..
So very FUNNY and I'm to old to be a Boomer..No matter, much of this is true of my age group also..Thank You.

The cartoons are cute. I just wish you would actually put some truth in them. But I guess if you did, the moron, pot smokin' baby boomers wouldn't find any of it funny.

And it wouldn't be.

Very clever and insightful..... Thanks!

Walt,
I just received your cartoon & I laughed till tears started.. I am celebrating my 55th birthday tomorrow& this was perfect.. Sorry to see the blog from the person who had no sense of humor & thought it was intellegent to tear your creativity apart.. Oh well, it takes all kinds.. Have a nice holiday & keep the cartoons comming.
Thanks,
Sharon

sorry.. don't like it..
at all..

kinda silly and really does not represent the boomer generation..
we still have so much work to do that no one seems to be doing.. we are still vital and powerful and i personally do not like the geriatric jokes .. i do not think getting old is an actual option..

we will go out in the same boom as we came in..

and as an artist i can honestly say the cartoon quality is reminiscant of the 50 somethign newspaper type cartoons.. not all that memorable..a

sorry for such a non conformist comment...
but then i was born to be wild

peace

Boomer animation funny? Please consider this point of view. Full article can be read here:

FindArticles - Ageism is touchy topic for older boomers

Ageism is touchy topic for older boomers
Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Sep 5, 2004 by David Crary Associated Press

"NEW YORK -- Greeting-card and novelty companies call them "Over the Hill" products: the 50th Birthday Coffin Gift Boxes featuring prune juice and anti-aging soap; the "Old Coot" and "Old Biddy" bobblehead dolls; the birthday cards mocking the mobility, intellect and sex drive of the no-longer-young.

Many Americans chuckle at such humor. Others see it as offensive, as one more sign of pervasive ageism in America.

It's a bias some also see in substandard conditions at nursing homes, in pension-plan cutbacks by employers, in the relative invisibility of the elderly on television shows and in advertisements.

"Daily we are witness to, or even unwitting participants in, cruel imagery, jokes, language and attitudes directed at older people," contends Dr. Robert Butler, president the International Longevity Center-USA and the person who coined the term "ageism" 35 years ago."

...

Thank you so much for the great laughs! This is what keeps us boomers young..yeah!!! We're still going....

Walt,
Very clever parody.
I have been looking for someone to collaborate with on my music publishing catalog. I have some ideas about an internet cartoon strip. My father-in-law is Jay Livingston. His daughter, my wife and I, own the publishing rights to many of his songs. Pls check it out and let me know if you have any ideas.
Cheers,
Randy Talmadge

Dear Walt,

You are funny, clever & just what the world needs!!

We also create something the world needs more of - harmony..

Are you for hire? Or a philanthropist? I wonder if you would create a cartoon to go along with any of the 20 songs on our new CD & post it ? We are not computer people but we are preserving the art of a cappella soul - we have some light/fun lyrics & some deep/message songs..

Just a thought.. you can reach me at julie713@cox.net & you can hear some clips at www.jerrylawson.biz

Thanks again for the laughs!

URL...HTML????...YIKES I GUESS I'VE GOTTA' BRUSH UP ON SOME STUFF...I'M 53 YEARS OLD, A PROUD GRANDPA OF A 1 1/2 Y.O. GRANDSON. I HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED WITH A NEW YORK CITY BASED CABLE TV FIRM FOR 32 YEARS NOW...AND AS FAR BACK AS I CAN REMEMBER I HAVE BEEN SPOOFING AT LIFE'S GOINGS ON THRU DRAWING. CARTOONS CHARACATURES, AND OTHER FORMS OF MERRIMENT..INCLUDING CLAY MODELING WHICH I GIVE AWAY AS GIFTS. I ENJOY BEST WHEN A GROUP OF PEOPLE ARE DISCUSSING A TOPIC IN A CORNER OF AN OFFICE OR ROOM EX:SPORTS HOBBIES ETC I WILL WHIP UP A CARTOON WHICH PORTRAYS THEM IN ACTION...AND THEY FALL APART LAUGHING WHEN I PRESENT IT TO THEM.
JUST WANTED TO SAY HI. HOPEFULLY SOME DAY I WILL TURN FUN INTO A LIVELYHOOD.sincerel thanks frank p.

Walt...thanks for bringing my eyes tears of laughter. I hope you and yours never let us forget the pleasure of laughing at ourselves.

I can certainly relate to your witty animation. At age 58, I now go to my aerobics class wearing a wrist brace and avoid some of the back exercises because of previously fractured discs. I keep wondering what will go next. How long will I be able to keep this up? Despite the frustrating infirmities, I can still exercise as long and hard as I did in my 20's. Keep the animations coming.

How do I subscribe to this page?

Hi Walt. I know this may sound silly, but I am wondering if you are a relative to our Handelsman family? My father in law, Lester Handelsman had 3 syblings- of which 2 had passed. Steve Handelsman is our cousin who is a news reporter. The spelling of our name is unique. If you are a relative, please feel free to email me at coweyesone^@yahoo.com
Thank you.

Walt,

Your blog was forwarded to me through a friend up in PA. As usual I enjoyed seeing your work and loved the animation bit. Apparently, one of symptoms of aging for some folks is crabbiness.........email sometime to catch up. Love to JD, Billy, Jodie.

Kirk

Dear Walt I am the person who helped make the baby boomers.

at age 81, I am enjoying the produce of the Baby Boomer son & daughters grandchildren, even the twins of a twin.
having 3 my self we now have 10 grand children, that equals up to 14 great-grandchildren and so the Baby Boomers sperms go.

At 81 the Boomers give me lots of laughs like you.
Ginny

Walt,

I enjoyed this very much. Thank you for creating a humorous video that made my day!

Mark

Walt,

Great cartoon! And guess what????

We broke our treadmill just this morning!!!!!

Gary

My very first time to the animations today and all I can say is, "Unbelievable!"

I bow in humble service to your immeasurable genius.

how can I open you on MAC

Hi Walt,

I LOVED "Bored, Tubby and Mild!" I found it to be incredibly creative and highly entertaining, as well.

This is not the mode with which I would normally attempt to contact you, however, as I couldn't locate an e-mail address for you, this will have to do.

I co-host a nostalgia radio show called "Remember When" - that originates out of Philadelphia. Our powerful signal reaches 38 states and all of Canada.

I would love to play your Steppenwolf parody on our show; I know our listeners would get a big kick out of it. I noticed that it's copyrighted, so I'm asking for your permission to air it on our radio program. May we?

Kindly advise.

Warm regards,

Steve Ross

Mr. Handelsman, you made me scream! (Uh, not THAT way....)

Thanks for sharing your profundity and your talent.

E.T.

Hey Walt!

I just saw your Baby Boomers animation. Hilarious! How have you been? How are Jody and the kids doing? Hey, man...you're still funny!!! I have always enjoyed your intellectual humor. Keep it up, please.

You have definitely captured me -- you always seem to put a smile on my face! Thank you!

Hey Walt:
After the poker game, I googled you and learned that you had won another Pulitzer Prize. What a tremendous body of work. There is no telling the impact it makes. Cheney singing Loverley is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. You are awesome.
Have a great holiday.
Jeff

Dear Walt, You have a wonderful mind... I love your cartoons. The Baby Boomers animation is perfect... we relate to it. It's so great..I love the Bush cartoons also. Please keep giving us more of your talent and great sense of humor that we need it ;)

Wow..that was a riot. You have us oldies down to a pat! Thank you for the smiles! Can't wait for my husband to get home from work to show him. He's a youngun' ..only 52 but I know he'll get as much as a "charge" as I (62) did. It must make you feel "warm and fuzzy" to "know" just how many people you made smile...us oldsters need all the smiles we can get.

"BABY BOOMER"... THAT was "The cat's pajamas!" Definately going to put your web site in my book." A smile a day keeps the doctor away." THANK YOU WALT!!!

I have just been "Handlsman-ed" approx. 5 mins ago....WOW****
WISH I COULD HAVE A DAILY DOSE!!!!

GOD BLESS YOU,
RENA L. RUSSELL

You 2 got way to much time on your hands man!

Walt...
Your cartoons should come with a warning lable: COFFEE SENSITIVE! -- A friend just sent Aging Baby Boomers to me and I almost spewed my morning coffee all over the screen and keyboard! --Hilarrious!-- Now that I know where to find fantastic entertainment I will be back often!

Thanks....
Cheryl
(an aging baby boomer!)

i can not stay here any more

I loved "Baby Boomer". I am also proud to be a baby boomer because we are putting "YOUNG" into the 50+ bracket. By that I mean that I realize the older I get, the younger I really am.

Debbie Barth, Executive Assoicate-Talk Fusion

The "Baby Boomer" video just Kills me!! WHAT a funny awakening to getting older. At LEAST we can laugh about it. SO funny and SO TRUE!!! THANKS for the laugh!!! AND the laugh at myself!!!

The "Baby Boomer" video just Kills me!! WHAT a funny awakening to getting older. At LEAST we can laugh about it. SO funny and SO TRUE!!! THANKS for the laugh!!! AND the laugh at myself!!!

Walter. You and I went to Park School together. I was so PROUD to see your cartoons and laughed OUT LOUD. I remember you getting in trouble with the teachers at Park for doodling in your note book instead of listening. That bad behavior got you far!

I live in LA as a writer/producer in film and tv. My parnter (common law husband) and I run a film production company. Polly Panitz got in touch with me last year and came to my 50th bday celebration. We hadn't seen eachother in 18 years.

Congrats on your fabulous cartoons, and best to you and your family.

Sally Kaplan
South Pasadena, CA

Thanks for those that have captions.

The Baby Boomers animation site was sent to us by our son! What a blast! My husband and I laughted out loud...I take Motrin everyday, and we both use the treadmill everyday...we haven't had the bypasses, tucks, and body replacements yet, although my left knee seems headed that way. Thanks for the fun...have a wonderful holiday season and 2008.

I absolutely love the Baby Boomer animation. May I link it on my website?

Personally, I think the video is an insult to baby boomers. Did you have nothing better to do, or are you just jealous of the boomers? I resent it. You have made us appear to be a bunch of feeble bodied as well as mined geriatrics. I am sure many agree with me, yet won't comment. That's a shame and so is the fact that you think it's really funny to make a generation of people who have gone through many historic events, look like idiots.

Apparently, the people that "love" it are not boomers. Probably in your age group.

Dear Mr. Handelsman,
You may not remember me but your gave my friend Ralph your George Bush overhead drawing today. Thank you for coming to Hofstra today and showing what it's really like to be you. It meant a lot to so many of us.

Great job with the presentation and work. Keep it up! We're rooting for you.

Walt - I was the school administrator at St. Martin's when you all lived down here in N'Awlins. At a different school now, but still here. Loved the animated sketch on baby boomers, and we continue to enjoy your 'toons in the Times-Picayune when they print them. Give my best to Jodie, Billy, and James.

Hi Walt
Remember me from Clarks Summit? My friend from Boston sent me your animation and I was surprised it was yours. Hope that you and yours are fine. I will check your web site.

Walt: Great song and cartoon! I can't believe that at least that one fellow boomer above is so crotchety and sensitive about our advances into bubbie- and zaydie-hood.

And...by the way, I still have that caricature you drew of me back in 1983 up in Section 34 (I was the chubby schoolteacher with the kazoo, lest you forget).

Mr. Handelsman, Love that Baby Boomer video. It cracked me up! I would love to put that on my MySpace page. I'd love for my friends on there to see this. It is hilarious. I will not post it unless given permission. Thank you and happy holidays!
Tracy T.

Your cartoons are right on the button and give us such pleasure.
They make you laugh and cry at the same time. What a mind you have! Thank you! Leslie Ann Powers

Walt:

Long time (old Park buddy). Shoot me an email. I may have to fly up to see you and Jody.

Walt, you are just another Bush bashing liberal. Stick your cartoons where the sun don't shine..

Walt,
Friend sent me the link to the boomer toons this morning. I'm not afraid to say I'm at the far end of the boomer era, but none-the-less still there. I checked a few of your toons today, and will return for the full exploration of your site after the holidays. Like the poster before me, anyone who's not happy with your expressions reminds me of the old school teachers I had in grammar school, crotchety old goats.
Keep 'em coming. Happy Holidays to you and yours

Mr. Handelsman,

I work for a senior housing company and would like to show your animated cartoon to our staff at an upcoming meeting. Would you be willing to release a file of this cartoon to me rather than me having to show it directly from the web?

Thank you,
Leanne Wise

I am 73 yrs & still enjoy your works & cartoons. WE LIVE IN OREGON & I TRIED BEING A CARTOON ARTIST, BUT PORTRAITS & LANDSCAPES CAME SO EASY FOR ME IN OILS, I DON'T PAINT NOW. MY SONS DID DRAWINGS WHEN GROWING UP & HAD GREAT IDEAS, ONE IS A FIREFIGHTER IN LAKE OSWEGO & THE OLDEST SON IS A PAINT CONTRACTOR, MAKES RACE CARS & SNOWMOBILE FIBERGLASS MOLDS & DIFFERENT STYLES OF HOOD & FENDERS. BOTH HAVE TALENT. WAYNE MAKES MAG. RACKS OUT OF SINGER 1800 SEWING MACHINES, FRAMES WITH RATTLE SNAKES ON INTERIOR EDGE OF BARN WOOD. LOTS OF SHELVES FOR ANTIQUES OUT OF ANTIQUES THAT COULD NOT BE SAVED & REFINISH ALL HIS OLD ANTIQUES THAT IS THRU/OUT THEIR HOME. QUITE A SHOW PLACE.

KEEP ON TRUCKING, YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT ROAD

These are the most trying times in all of human history. You
owe it to yourself to find the lighter side to these issues. I love,
more than anything, laughter. I think your comedic mind is
right up there with Robin Williams.

"

You used to babysit me and my sister Dene on Caveswood Lane. I remember your sister more than you because I wanted to be HER with her beautiful long 'Marsha-Brady' hair. When I heard of her death I was devastated.

I'm literary agent who has lived in NYC for 20 years. Why do I still, after all these years, find anyone who went to Park School funnier than anyone else?

Best,

Leigh Feldman

Walt,

I give you two thumb up for the Baby Boomer cartoon.

Obviously you didn't win a Pulitzer Prize THIS crap.

WHERE IS THE 2008 WEB CAMPAIGNS CARTOON? DID HILL'S PEOPLE REMOVE IT? WHAT ARE THEY AFRAID OF ?

LOVE YOUR WORK ! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!

Walt,

I'm ashamed to say I've just discovered your animations. I love them, and just can't seem to get enough!

I'm a big Barack Obama fan, and in the Barack/Hillary animation, you hit the nail right on the head! It's a great way to view any and all political agendas... seeing the humor in them!

Keep up the good work,
Weezie

Walt,

I'm ashamed to say that I've just discovered your animated cartoons, and I have to tell you that I just can't get enough of them!

I'm a big Barack Obama fan and in the Barack/Hillary animation you hit the nail squarely on the head! What a great way to approach any and all political agendas... by seeing the humor in them.

I look forward to more Barack (and related politicians) animations, as the political season progresses.

Great work,
Weezie

Walt, you're a genius! ... Thanks for helping us to hang in there, during these hard times, with your wild humor.
I was wondering if you could ask the Newsday webmaster to fix the SEND THIS URL button on the site. This opens up my email client (Outlook Express) which I haven't used in years. For those of us using Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. -- this doesn't work at all. ... A simple send email form -- like they have on all the other Newsday stories -- would work to get your cartoons spread around the Internet. Thanks again! ... and keep up the great work.

The Baby Boomer Cartoon is fantastic! I would love to be able to download it and save it on a disc. This is good work!

Thanks for the laugh,

SHenman

I love your Baby Boers cartoon. Is there a way I can add it to MySpace? Or is there a way I can save it to my computer?
You do great work.
Thanks!

Sorry I meant Baby Boomers Cartoon.

Hey Walt,
I just read your list of 50 things you learned in 50 years and some of your other work, Your really great, A genius even.
--Carl

Hello Walt.
Congratulations on your animation cartoons. They are great. Do you ever produce them for private customers? I have developed, Peggy of the Cove, the story of a young girl, the only survivor of a shipwreck in the mid 1800's. According to legend, the folks that took her in, called her Peggy. She became known as Peggy of the Cove so they name the famous fishing village after her, Peggy's Cove Nova Scotia). I have developed the story and my second book is soon to be printed. Peggy is in conflict with Billy, the bully of the cove. They have a showdown when Peggy informes the scorekeeper that Billy touched a buoy with his oar and so loses the boat race. Billy is furious and claims Peggy is blowing the whistle because earilier he secretly threw a cod skin under Peggy's stilt, she went flying into a trough of cod liver. As a loser, Billy refuses to kiss the cod. He turns to walk away, but Peggy grabs the cod and yells, "Billy." He stops, turns and WHAM. Peggys yells, "Kiss the cod you loser, and don't you ever bother me again." I could send the exact script and image of Peggy or you could see her on my web site as posted above. If you would produce the cartoon, what would be the approximate cost. Ivan Fraser. 1 888 524-2252 if you want to talk.
.

NOT ONLY ARE YOU SOME KIND OF HALF-WIT, APPARENTLY HE SAME IS TRUE OF YOUR FANS!

Walt,

A friend of mine forwarded me your animated "Baby Boomer" cartoon - very clever and just another example of your fine work. You may not remember me, but you and I were employed at the Columbia Flier/Times back in the 80's. I was their Credit Manager and you ably handled the editorial cartoons. Glad to see one of us has become a success - hope you do too one day :). Your work continues in excellence.

Lenny Sirasky

Walt, remember me? Your lift to school. Just discovered your animated cartoons because Kenny's wife sent us the one on baby boomers. It is absolutely perfect - and it applies equally well to us really old folk. Would love to hear from you so I can fill you in on my life and good times. All the best and keep me laughing - it keeps us all young!!

Is there any way to have these sent tom my email automatically?

I love them!! Hysterical!!

Walt,

I came across your site yesterday. I wanted to thank you for sharing your ability and wit with the world. I for one appreciate it.

Have you given any thought to what Bubba's title will be if Hilary makes it into the White House. "The first ladies man!" How fitting!

Can anyone tell me where to find this Handelsman cartoon?

It is a picture of a little girl coming in her front door...school bus in the background....her speech balloon...This is not going to work out. I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk. I would like to be able to find it to use it in my classroom.

Thanks!

Dear Walt:
Politics have never been so funny...altough politicians always look like clowns. Way to go...congratulations from abroad.
Sincerely,
Caesar

Walt,

You're still at it doing great work. We miss you down here in New Orleans at the T-P. You probably don't know this..but I used one of your T-P cartoon editorials in a political brochure back in '95...don't worry, I whited out your name and the T-P. It was the one where you depict former Senate President Sammy Nunez walking around the senate chamber with all the casino checks bulging out of his pockets.

If you can't tell, I was working for Mr. Lynn Dean who we all know went on to defeat Nunez. The cut line we put under your cartoon read..."Sometimes words aren't needed to make a point." The response was great and it all played a hand in the success of the campaign. So now, after many years, I get the chance to say "thanks!"

Thank you from all of us at RPP for a delightful evening!

hey walt...

your animations are brilliant and your writing is hysterical. i also like the voices but would like to hear more voice work from other people....how about you enlist some friends to be the voices????

Can you do your cartoons for a particular industry, like the travel industry? Make up a special cartoon for a company?

Hi Walt,

Absolutely great work.... You may be priced too high for us
but we are Kitchen Designers selling beautiful High End
Kitchens in Florida....

We think thats the way to go videos, maybe price wise its out
of our reach, but does not cost anything to ask....

We are working on our web site with new pictures of our work
coming out...

Our next project will be videos.... serious or not... thats the
question...

We would like to offer a comprehensive set of videos of
how we do things when we renovate a kitchen from concept
to completion... should it be fun... ...

Best Regards, Margie...

Just saw your Bored Tubby & Mild animation.

Below find an article about a new web site for boomers, it coincides with our official release date of 3-1-08.

Would love to feature your animation on our friends page.

A note from the Editor. Please visit: www.boomercapsule.com

I recently ran into a old high school friend, Jerry Schiano, that is involved in an exciting project involving the Baby Boom Generation. Jerry came to the realization that the Baby Boom generation was the first generation to be hit by a barrage of imagery from mature mixed media.

It sounds strange, but I knew what Jerry was talking about as soon as he mentioned Rocky and Bullwinkle, Choo Choo Charley, and Snap Crackle and Pop. Jerry then asked me to consider that these cartoon images where thrown at us while we watched cowboy and super heroes saving the day, or perfect families solving a problem in 30 minutes. Hey and if the family was not perfect that was OK too because you had Genie for your wishes, or a witch to keep your mother in law in line.

Then if you consider laying television entertainment and marketing imagery over the television news imagery with the Cold War, pending nuclear disaster, and the Vietnam war, it forges a unique question of who we were. A look at our old toys, and the music we listened to, helps in answering that question.

Then throw in imagery of a moon landing for hope, a sports industry for competition, a movie industry, an auto industry, and a brewing industry asking us to be adventurous, it is no wonder our generation tends to reach out for the gold ring even while we suffered with the assassinations of our leaders that represented hope.

Jerry explained that he has harvested much of the old imagery. Jerry's future son in law then got hold of the idea and created a very unique web site using the images from the Baby Boom Generation. The images are sorted by year, (1945 through 1982), and play like a movie. As you watch the imagery go by it tends to open memory passages of the mind. I found that I thought of things from my youth that I had not thought of for a long time.

Some of the great features of this new web site include the ability to leave your thoughts about each image, and if you click an image the site references and plays videos when they are available. I had a great deal of fun clicking on the old TV show pictures and seeing the old introductions to the shows and hearing the shows themes. I was surprised by the large number of fun old commercials that the site provides, do you remember The Flintstones selling cigarettes?. The site is also a valuable record of history. In fact Jerry claims that sites like my space tend to be about who we are, while this site gives a generation the opportunity to leave a legacy about who we were.

If you are a boomer I think you will have fun visiting www.boomercapsule.com.

I would really like to show this animation in a Heath and Wellness PowerPoint lecture to my patients.

How would one go about obtaining a copy of this animation in a format that I could insert into my PowerPoint presentation?

Hi Walt:

It would have been really funny regarding the "3 am call" joke to feature Sen. Clinton receiving the call, listening to the caller, and then handing the phone over to Bill saying "It's a crisis, YOU handle it" and then going back to sleep.

I love your insights into what really matters in this crazy world of ours Mr. Handelsman. I must ask you a question based upon your keen insight into what is presenting itself to those who really wish to see. Does Obama Barack cast a shadow that reminds you just a little bit of someone from the past named
Adolf Hitler?

Mr. Handelsman,

I work for the federal government, and I received the babyboomer animated cartoon by e-mail. I thought it would be perfect to show at my bosses retirement reception at the end of April. I am doing a "roast", and him and his wife have joined a gym, and are watching what they eat. I was hoping to download it to put in a "PowerPoint" presentation that I will show at his reception. Would this be possible? Any help you could give me would be appreciated. He is retiring at 35 years of service.

Hi Walt,

Your work is fantastic! Is it my imagination or do some of the men in your cartoons look like your father?

In light of Bin Laden's most recent threats ( March 19)

"DUBAI (Reuters) - Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden threatened the European Union with grave punishment on Wednesday over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

In an audio recording posted on the Internet, Bin Laden said the cartoons were part of a "crusade" in which he said the Catholic Pope Benedict was involved."

Walt,

Would you consider giving a struggling voice over talent an opportunity? I would love to give it a shot, and I'm a Baby Boomer to boot......Ba Ba Boom

Great job on all the videos.

QUESTION:
What programs do you use to make the cartoon videos? I'd like to buy one.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks

Dear Walt,
I really like your cartoon of "Baby Boomers Collect their Social Security!"
I also have started a "My Space" page along with my adult children a while ago. My "My Space" page is for ONLY family and some of my childrens friends who are now adults.
My question to you is, can I PLEASE put your "Baby Boomers" cartoon on my "My Space" page?
I would really love to use your cartoon; as it not only fits our life but also is very intertaining to my generation! I would also be more then honard! to add you to our "My Space" page along with our family.

Walt.. this is soooo fantastic... the "senior" video piece you put together.

I'm writing a book.. get UP!...get OUT!...and get your MOVE ON!.
...living Life after 60 with Passion, Purpose and Courage..

I am 68years young.. play on a senior olympics basketball team... and I still work full time as an entertainer.. singer/
songwriter...musician, etc.

I'm wondering if you would be interestd in contributing a few
great cartoons to my book... Ion seniors.. aging.. etc.

My book will hopefully inspire ...embrace....and motivate those over 50-60 to live life with gusto.. continue to set goals..
laugh at ourselves..etc. and get off the couch and
LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST!!

It's not about how many years we live, but how we live in the years we have...

I also do some motivational speaking, etc. -

I'm hoping my book will be a great source of inspiration to
the many seniors who have somewhat given up on living and life... Being able to laugh at ourselves is one of the keys to acceptance of where we are in life..

I'm sure you could come up with some real doozie cartoons...

Thanks..

Great work!!

I still have an original of a Saint cartton from U.

i often like your cartoons, but (and you knew that was coming) regarding the sunday piece:
LYNCHING.
really? is that supposed to be funny? perhaps controversial?
what it is is ignorant and offensive and counterproductive to any efforts by your paper to expand its audience. i would expect a cartoonist and former new orleanian to be more sensitive to the power of images, particularly this one.
controversy in the service of a point is welcome but this use seems tone deaf, something that just slipped past any editors who might ask what it is you are trying to say with a lynching image that could not be said with some other, more relevant image. (perhaps a nice crucifixion image next time?)
i could go on but you get the point. i look forward to your reply.
raphaelm

Hi Walt -

My brother Kevin in Hampton Bays has become a huge fan of yours. He has been sending me your stuff. Little does he know that I read and marvel at your framed cartoon that pays homage to Tiffany ("I went to Parkview Tavern to see Tiffany and all I got was this lousy tee shirt.") I love that drawing. Another one I love even more is the one where you are leaving New Orleans in your crowded car with your family and the Mardi Gras beads in the trunk. That was a real tearjerker. I wish I had clipped it....

That's all. No, one more thing:

You Rock!

Hi, Walt!

Would you ever consider posting your creations on MyToons.com?

Thanks,

Hi Walt !
Being a Baby Boomer myself . . .
You captured the essence of it all. I am preparing a DVD to show at our High School Reunion and would love to include Baby Boomers. Is there a way to purchase it for downloading?
Love your work !!!!

Hi Walt,

I'm a high school teacher and we're looking for a specific historical cartoon to show our students. Can you suggest a place to look for the cartoon.

It is from 1936 or 1937. The picture is of a globe looking down on a boxing ring during the Joe Louis v. Max Schmeling fight.

Thanks.

Hi Watt,

I'm Gigi from Wisewomensworld.com a website for women over 50 and we fall so perfectly into the Baby Boomers Video. What a scream it is!!!!

I have alerted all my friends to your website so they can have a great laugh too and view your other terrfic work.

Is it possible to link to your video through my site - Wisewomensworld.com? Is that permitted?

Congrats on all the humour you produce and the joy it gives us all.

Cheers Gigi

Hi, Walt

This is Tom from Packaging at the ole T. P. I have been retired
now for over two years. Someone sent me the link to your site
and I have been enjoying myself immensely.
I would like to apologize to you as I see that I underestimated
you when we were at the T. P. You are way more talented then
I ever imagined. As far as I am concerned, you are the best out
there. I miss our visits. Thank you, Walt I have and always will
enjoy your work.

Mr. Handelsman,

You know I served my country and I just got called a ***troller. I know that this is freedom of speech, but people take this out of hand. I agree with you making that cartoon of high gas prices because it is true and being that other countries are having it higher than us, I think that someone needs to hurry up and settle whatever it is that needs to be settled. Not only for prices of gas, food and other things going up, but for the families that are barely making it day-to-day. Am really sorry for the losses and am really regretting not going to Iraq because I had alot of really good friends of mine killed over there 4 years ago. I can't imagine what the families are going through. But i can't read these comments anymore. My mother also served in the military, Marines, and fought in Desert Storm I, and to think how she would take this if she read some of these comments. Thank you for your time and effort.

Hi Mr. Handelsman,
we are an NGO doing critical work on genetic engeneering in Switzerland for the last 20 years. For to celebrate the 20th anniversary we are planning an exhibition with cartoons in november 2008 in Basel, CH.
Would you be as kind as to participate there with one or two of your cartoons?
As soon as possible we could give you further information.
Thank`s a lot for your answer.
Warm regards,

Hi Walt,
I just saw the "Baby Boomers" and I loved it. Keep up the good work.

What is the best way to contact you about a potential project? Of course, if that sounds intriguing...

Thanks in advance!

Hi Walt,

I was sent your animated Baby Boomers cartoon and it is hilarious!!!

I have been sending it to friends & family members as I know they will enjoy it as much as I did.

Keep up the good work, we all need a laugh nowadays.

Take care and keep laughing,

Arlene from Delaware

Great blog you have here ...
Always wondered and now have seen the proof that you are related to Steve Handelsman of NBC's affiliate news service ... who I worked with in a former broadcast life. Steve's good people ... has hung in there through numerous budget and personnel cuts and quite frankly dumb management moves ... a class act.

Dear Walt,

I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your work. For years I have followed your work either in my local paper, The Roanoke (VA) Times, The Baltimore Sun (when visiting my folks) or Newsweek. When I discovered your web site, I immediately bookmarked it and check it often. The animation is a clever idea. Your work always makes me smile and I wanted you to know how much I appreciate that.

You may not remember me, I was friends with your sister Janie. My dad taught tennis at Green Valley. I will never forget Janie's birthday party (6,7?) at Painter's Mill Music Fair. We saw Alice in Wonderland. I remember you playing the drums. Actually, I still have a small scar on my chin from where your dalmatian, Blue nipped me when I tried to give him/her a kiss.

It was nice to see the photos of Steve and you at the convention.

Thanks for sharing your humor.

Marjorie

Hi Walt,
Going to try again with two cartoon topics

On your flight home, "Attention passengers, this is your captain speaking. We are in need of two flight attendants, Any volunteers?"

The Obamas at breakfast " Honey, I don't care what you promised about equal pay for women. I am not going to take a pay cut."

Walt
I grew up with you at Green Valley Swim Club I believe. Someone forwarded your born to be wild vid...I ride harleys all over the usa today...so it was amusing especially after having both hips replaced in the last decade, LIFE IS GOOD.

I want a T-shirt with your How To Field Dress a Donkey on it! How about making some available? Pleez...... (And you'd probably make a fortune!)

Walt, I just saw your cartoon on how to field dress a donkey.

Great work. It ranks right up there with your exit cartoon when you left New Orleans and the cartoon with the Ark on the top of the Superdome.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Walt
Are you any relation to Johnathan Handelsman?
Lived in UK in 1970's....

If so I would like to make contact
many thanks
Pete

Hi Folks...

I get a ton of requests from people to download or otherwise grab my animations. I am very flattered by all the interest but the short answer is, I don't release or sell my original animation files.
If you want to use an animation feel free to just run it from this site.
If you have an event and would like to use an animation, just hook a laptop with internet connection up to a power point projector and you can show it on any size screen.
I've done it at my speaking engagements and it works great.
Well, I hope this answers the question and I just want to thank all of you for writing and checking out my stuff. It really means the world to me that you enjoy what I do as much I enjoy doing it.

Take care!

Walt Handelsman

Walt.

Over the years I have enjoyed your sense of humor, a stlye of presentation that smacks reality upside it's head.

I deeply appreciate the political cartoon presentations that gives a person a reason to ponder (or is it Pander?) the status-quo of life's circumstances.

It would be a pleasure to meet You, and If we did meet I am quite sure that humor would be the only thing that would be remembered because i can see things from some of the same askewed, bizarre but practical ways.

Walt...

Keep up the good work. I need the laughs.

Consider a cartoon with an animal control officer (either McCain or Obama would work) and an out-of-control pit bull with lipstick.

Dennis...

Is the Babyboomers available for purchase?

i wanted to see some more of your cartoons from last month. guess not. i can see 2007 but until this year is over i cannot find a link for previous 2008. must be the new format. new is always better right?

Hi Walt,

Thanks for sharing your very special talent, humor and artwork with the rest of us.

I had a friend, Chuck Ren, who was a very talented Western artist who died about the same age as you are now.
It is nice to know your talent as well as his will be remembered for all to share.

Thank you again for sharing your gift with the rest of us.

Walt,

Loved today's cartoon but there is one factual mistake in it: Obama is left handed, but you have him holding a pen with his right hand (while Uncle Sam pokes his head in and says, "Averything fixed yet?"). Left handed people, like myself, will notice this. Still, very funny. Carmine

Walt,
I was just forwarded your Baby boomer animation and loved it. I have been wanted to have a specific animation done for my wife. Is that something you would cionsider doing and what would it cost. Please reach me at my eamil to dicuss further if you are interested.

thanks

Sehr wertvolle Informationen! Empfehlen!

As the author of Grandpa Does Grandma: The ABCs of Senior Sex available April 2009, (my third book) I'm requesting permission to post in its entirety your Baby Boomer animation on the website with full credits. The book is about the 74 million baby boomers who are now turning 64. It dispels the misconception that sexual activity and intimacy diminish as we get older. Thanks

I may be making this up, but for months and months, your cartoons appeared automatically on my personalized iGoogle home page. I deleted this configuration by mistake and have tried to rebuild it the way it was. HOWEVER, I cannot located the "widget" (or "gadget" as they call it) that brought your cartoons to my iGoogle page. Can you help me with this? I've search and search the Google site for it, but I simply cannot find it.

Please don't tell me it's not available any longer!

Dennis..

Walt, Love your work and offer a cartoon suggestion, don't know if the whole thing coppied but,,,,,

POLITICAL CARTOON

Imagine a cartoon drawing divided into three parts. In the center of the drawing is an 18th century cargo wagon complete with spoked wheels, buckboard seat and low wooden sides. The wagon is loaded with insignia representing AIG, Fannie May, Freddie Mac, GM, Chrysler and the Iraq war debt and the wagon is mired in mud up to the axles. Out in front of the wagon is Barack Obama and Timothy Geithner pulling on the extended tongue.

The sky above the left and center portion of the drawing is dark and ominous but the sun’s rays are cast onto the right portion of the drawing. In this right hand scene, the grass is green, flowers are in bloom and children are playing. Obama and Geithner are trying to pull the wagon towards the right side of the drawing. A voice balloon from Obama says”If we could only get some help”.

On the left side are caricatures of Rush Limbaugh, John Boehner and Bobby Jindal. In the background is Osama Bin Laden in his white robes with his right arm raised and clutching an AK-47. A voice balloon above the figures says “We want the PLAN to fail”.

Of course, if the plan fails, the wagon sinks into the mud and the represented companies go along with it. However, if in the American tradition, everybody pulls together, the wagon can be pulled from the mud and into the sunshine.

The Republican party can take one of two routes:
1. Resist the plan and continue to come up with excuses as to why it won’t work. If this plan is opted, the plan will fail and the RNC will have earned the title of ‘the party of no’.
2. Cooperate and work with the plan. Then in 2012, they can say that they were a part of the recovery plan.

Good site, admin.

Walt-

Does the DNC pay you weekly or monthly?

Hi Walt,
As a professional musician and entertainer, I always get a kick out of your animation videos. Love'em.
Just a quick note on the West Side Story vid: The closing page shows a URL for a free sound effects site. You left out a letter. "All" has two L's.
But other than that, you're perfect.

The West Side Story animation is cute, but you left out Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Rahm Emmanuel and the rest of the crooks who set the whole thing up. But then, I'm not surprised . . .

Dear Walt,

I have been a fan of your animations for a few years, now. Although I mostly disagree with your politics, I really appreciate the humor. Since the Obama presidency started, your work has not been nearly as impressive. In fact, I have been downright disappointed that seem to be unable, and, or unwilling to poke fun at the new administration. Do you really want to waste four or eight years in the shallow end of the pool?
