I think this is about how most people feel today. My husband and I have traveled around the world several times and enjoyed flyng.
Now by the time we get through Security we are exhausted. We live in San Diego in the winter and Vermont in the summer. We have two cats who travel with us during this trip. The worst part is dealing with TSA, not to mention having had our names on the list-- whtaever they call it. It took working with our congressman, writing letters, and many telephone calls to have it removed. My husband served 43 years of active duty in the USN and had more security clearances than most people serving in the congress. It is outrageous how Americans like ourselves are being harrassed.
The sad part is we will probably have to endure this and many other incoveniences for the remainder of our life. I am glad the greater part of our lives were the best of times.
We appreciate your gift of humor--it makes us feel we are not alone.
My husband and I used to enjoy flying, but with the TSA and their "antics", it is exhausting just to get through security. I saw an 85 year old lady all but have a heart attack while 3 TSA female workers were digging and throwing things out of her purse.... She had no one to help her. But, what could anyone do??? If you say anything, they "handcuff" you and throw you in jail..... She was traveling alone and almost in tears. When they got done with their "mess, they "threw it on the table" and told her "to pick it up and move on".... Come on now! There has to be some level of compassion for people. TSA is not dealing with "rats" - we are human beings (which most of them have long forgotten.). If I could take the time to drive, I would let the airlines "beg for people to start flying again!!" Our BIG GOVERNMENT AT WORK ONCE MORE!
My wife and I totally agree with the above comments. The TSA group varies so much from airport to airport, we certainly do not feel secure.
With all of the sophisticated electronic devices, fool proof xray equipment and other devices that don't get tired or bored, talk amongst themselves and most importantant, do not intimidate nor discriminate, why is our government insistiing of hiring thousand of people that, for the most part do not seem to be effective.
Worse yet, they are hassleing us while they load tons on parcels and cago in the very same airplanes that have not been inspected at all. It's just a matter of time before some of us pay a terrible price.
has /have any of the presidential candidates come out with a position of abolishing the police state tactics of the security workers at the airports? or even noted that the continued "Orange Alert" in effect at the airports is like the boy crying "wolf, wolf"!
I don't mind so much writing what I will, that's what so great about this nation, freedom of speach! This will piss off a lot of people, so what, I read drivel that I find annoyng, just deal with it, here goes,,, "Security" had better get real and ignore tha do-gooder guidelines and remember a few things, we are at war, period. This is not PogoPoop, the enemy is not (always) ourself! "Profiling"!!! Damn right! Who crashed a plane into the Towers etc., Captain Kangaroo?, your momma? I could go on, here's the point, Angry young Muslims aged 18- 47. It is way past due time the "leaders", policymakers and whoever the 'please everybody' candyasses get the f**k out and allow effective lifes to go on about their business! These are the jackasses responsible the the rising cost of fuel, altering the way we live, think the chain reaction has begun. enough for now.
I used to work for the TSA. Being retired from the military, after 9/11 I wanted to help with the new war. What a joke the TSA turned out to be. They could have easily modeled themselves after the military but no, they chose to be more like the prison system. Bad choice. I lasted 2 years until I could not force myself to do their idiotic bidding any longer. As many of you know, it is a complete farce, just eye-candy to make you feel better about flying, as the latest news reports about screening effectiveness confirms. There are thousands standing around (TSA) on the government dole taking scissors away (TSA) with the attitude of tough $hit A-hole (TSA). It is time for the airlines to stop spending the taxpayers $$$ and pay for the security themselves. The last layer of security is for the military to shoot the high-jacked plane down regardless of "who" screened them at the airport checkpoints. That is where the taxpayers money needs to go, into smart missiles, not overpaid dumb lard a$$es who couldn't get a real job.
Keep in mind that the TSA is in existence for one and only one reason. To make everybody THINK that the governemnt is looking out for your best interests. The government will do anything it has to do to make people believe that. After all, an 85 year old grandmother swings a wicked walking cane !
I have to laugh, if my high school chemistry class serves me correct, you take 4 oz. of this kinda liquid, 4 oz. of that kinda liquid, and top it off with 2 oz. of this type liquid...mix them together and walla...boom...all under the required and legal 4 oz. max. carry-on requirements. By the way I failed high school chemistry, and no, I never tried mixing the above liquids...I was smart enough not to try do so... Do I continue to fly, certainly, I have no fear of flying...what I am most afraid of is driving to the airport...that is where the real danger of injury and death lies.
God bless and have a Happy Thanksgiving, a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! (I just had to say that, it is not permitted in many of the stores, in public or in our grade schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges, bars and meetings places where I live...by the way I live in the United States of America!)
My biggest gripe with TSA and cruise line security is that even thought I carry a card saying I have a Stryker knee implant, they insist on using the wand and doing a pat-down. They don't even want to see the card, much less read it.
Why did my doctor give me the card, if noone wants to look at it?
Not a world traveler, but having to open my 35mm camera and ruining a roll of flim, yeah, right, I got a bomb inside it. The people in Ft. Lauderdale Airport could use a few lessons in kindness, and hygiene too.
I think we are getting a little taste of what is going to be
If we don't stand up for ourselves you and me
Our government is taking over our lives and we look the other way
We concern ourselves with what clothes are in style and is that politically correct to say
If we don't do something to stop this trend
Our days of flying anywhere may just end
LAST YEAR I WAS FLYING HOME FROM A 5 DAY GETAWAY WITH MY 7 MONTH OLD SON 2 SISTER-IN-LAWS AND THERE 7 MONTH OLDS AND MY DIABETIC MOTHER-IN-LAW OUR FLIGHT WAS DELAYED THEN CANCELED AFTER SITTING IN THE AIRPORT 6 HOURS WE WERE TOLD TO GO THROUGH SUCURITY AND WAIT BY GATE TO BE PUT ON A CHARTERED FLIGHT WE HAD TO WAKE UP OUR SLEEPING BABIES SO THE CARRIGES SND THE BABIES COULD BE CHECKED THEN THEY TOOK AWAY ALL WATER TELLING US WE WOULD GET WATER ON THE PLANE FOR ANY FORMULA BOTTLES WE WOULD NEED SORRY TO SAY THE CHARTERED FLIGHT WAS CANCELED AND ALL PASSENGERS HAD TO GO BACK TO THE TICKET COUNTER TO BE ISSUED NEW TICKETS FOR A NEW FLIGHT WITH SCREAMING BABIES AND MY MOTHER-IN-LAWS NOW LOW SUGAR LEVELS IT TOOK US TIME TO GET TO THE COUNTER ALL THE PASSENGERS GOT ON THE NEXT FLIGHT BESIDES US. WE WERE TOLD WE HAD TO WAIT 4 MORE HOURS TO GET ON A FLIGHT WHEN WE ASKED FOR WATER FOR OUR SCREAMING BABIES WE WERE LAUGHED AT BUT GOT THE WATER MY MOTHER-IN-LAW GOT SOMETHING TO EAT AND WAS FINE. WE FINELY GOT THE BABIES BACK TO SLEEP WHEN WE HAD TO PASS THROUGH SECURITY ONCE MORE AND THE BABIES STARTED TO SCREAM AGAIN WHEN WE FINELY BORDED THE PLANE WE WERE YELLED AT BY THE CREW WHY IT WAS TAKING SO LONG TO CLOSE THE CARRAGES AND COULD WE PLEASE GET THE BABIES CALMED DOWN. NO HELP WAS OFFERED. AFTER A SLEEPLES NIGHT WE FINELY RETURNED HOME TO BE TOLD THEY DID NOT KNOW WERE OUR LUGGAGE WAS. WHAT DID WE GET FOR ALL THIS HASSEL? AFTER 3 LETTERS AND 2 PHONE CALLS WE FINELY GOT VOUCHER TO USE TOURDS OUR NEXT TRIP.

I am a blonde caucasian male with blue eyes so I am all for profiling dark haired dark skinned eastern sounding folks getting on any plane I am boarding. While I had everything in my possession searched before boarding a plane in Mexico, I saw a cardboard box totally wrapped with duct tape on the luggage ramp headed into the plane I was about to board. I was uneasy about that damn box right up till the time we landed.
Re: TSA, Stryker knees, etc.
Hate to say this but TSA has to be one of the worst outfits in the world and all at our tax payer expense. I, too, have a Stryker Knee and I travel a lot. So, I get the pat down and search every time. NO CARD FROM ANYONE WILL SAVE YOU IF YOU HAVE A HIP, KNEE, ETC. TELL THE DOC TO SAVE HIS TIME. It is not like the olden days. Now to the solution. I would like to see a system where there are two lines. I am willing to pay for a "frequent flyer" passport. Let the State Department, NCIS, Secret Service, FBI, etc investigate you, you pay for the privilege, and then for this one time cost you receive an absolutely irrefutable way to go through to you airplane unhindered. Since I had a top secret security clearnace when I was in the Navy and it was a pretty through investigation, I know this can be done and we can get rid of 1/2 of the TSA since I know a lot of people would do the same thing. It is thinking outside the box. We also need to get rid of "profiling" as a nasty word. I have not seen but one female in the entire history of aviation, who was a terrorist. I don't think that I have any fear of white, anglo saxon, males or females. We need to profile dark skinned, black hair, etc. Come on, let's be realistic. Pass some laws to put ACLU out of business so we can get airborne and get on with business. I would gladly pay $1000 to skip the idiots in TSA. I have taken to flying in sweat pants, packing all toiletries in luggage, and taking on the airplane a paperback. I even pack my phone and laptop.
So sad reading all your problems. I live in Israel and we
are wanded at every
mall, department store, bank, cafe, restaurant etc.
At the entrance to parking lot, a "security guy/gal" opens
the trunk to look inside.
It is a great way to lower the unemployment rates, but
does not help security. And yes, although most women are
not wanded (must be a medical reason), they do blow
themselves up.
There are better ways to have security other than to
hassle people that want to enter a movie theater.
I am sorry to hear about all the problems with people traveling with kids, but after our last trip I had to endure hearing some guy on the plane whining about his seat, how he was 'traveling with three kids' and how they had to split up their seats and making demands on the flight attendants. Hey-get a grip, people with babies and kids. Not everyone is going to cater to you and kowtow to your every wish and give you special treatment. It's bad enough the screaming darlings get to fly for free on the parents' lap, that free 'seat' costing paying passengers overhead space that is eaten up by all the paraphernalia you have to pack for them but then to listen to the complaints too is really the limit. Face it that traveling now is alot of work, alot of walking, and of course, being put on the plane, being taken off the plane because of a 'mechanical problem' - delays, rudeness, indifference...it's part of travel now. If you can't handle it, then wait until the kids get older.
My work takes me all over the world, so of course I have to fly quite often. As I read about all the complaints about the TSA, late flights, long lines, rude flight crews etc; I wonder do you people just like to complain or could it be your part of the problem. I'd willing to guess its both. Everytime I fly I see most customers showing up late, too many bags, things that are in there bags that shouldn't be. Kid travelers running around out of control.Once these folks are late they have to make up time, they are in a big hurry and become irrateable. When their unauthorized items are taken away from them they become more frustrated. A vicious cycle starts as soon a they reach the airport. These travelers start treating people badly, their manners and common sense go right out the door. Their reactions are met with the same type of bad attitude the have spawned. Every bad reaction with be met with a bad reaction, its just keeps snowballing. There is a system that needs to be used everytime you fly and its a very simple one. Prepare yourself prior to leaving for the airport. Bring a smile a good attitude and know what the hell your doing. If everyone brought those three things to the airport we all would be better off!
My comment is to the rediculous new security law requiring all cosmetics, lotions etc to be placed in a small clear plastic bag, nothing more than 100ml each. I have watched while expensive cosmetics are confiscated, larger than 100ml tubes of toothpaste and the like being taken, Everyone holding their plastic bag. I did say to one security man - the next time you see me I will probably be required to take all my clothes off and just carry a plastic bag with my documents - fortunately he did have a sense of humour and laughed! Once inside the terminal one is allowed to buy liter bottles of alcohol - surely this is a greater risk to the safety of passengers that the offending tubes and lotions. One can break a bottle easily and then have a very useful weapon.
The other gripe - not enough chairs after going through the screening for people to be able to sit down and tie their shoe laces up - especially the elderly who have trouble balancing. I wear slip on shoes so that is not a problem for me but many don't and then are required to take shoes off.
Yes, I travel a lot and many are long international flights - all international flights from Australia are long!
I like to read comments but I am truly amazed that people who post on these blogs cannot spell and do not have any grammatical skills. It would be so nice to read intelligent comments without wading through the misspellings. It makes me sad at the obvious state of our educational system.

Hi all. No one goes there nowadays, it's too crowded. Help me! Need information about: Commercial direct lenders. I found only this - make origami money. By invitation - chris bones on the crisis of confidence in business leadership. Thanks . Devin from Peru.
