Our only hope?
The idea of term limits seems counter Democratic to me. If voters like someone they should be able to re-elect him or her over and over again. With that said, the tone of Mayor Bloomberg's effort to change NY law so that he can seek a third term seems off-putting because of the way he has framed the issue.

Walt...
In an altruistic sense, term limits do seem un-Democratic. Our current form of government in our democracy is far from altruistic on average.
In a jaded world with apathetic voters, biased media, corporate-funded political machines and government's blatant trend to expand Eisenhower's definition of the dreaded industrial/military complex to include politicians, term limits work in the long run to the advantage of the people.
The "new" dreaded complex adds not just politicians; it adds the corporate backers whose pockets are shared with the politicians. I can see a Handelsman cartoon now, with three shady figures left-to-right: military, industry and political, with the military and industrial figures shown with arms around each other "buddy-style," and the political figure with his hand in the industrialist's pocket.
