Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign expressed regret late Friday for the “tone” used in recently disclosed campaign documents that raised questions about rival Democrat Sen. Hillary Clinton’s ties to India and Indian Americans.

The statement from Obama’s campaign manager came in the wake of complaints from an Indian American group, whose leader complained earlier in the day about “anti-Indian American stereotyping” in the documents.

“There cannot be a suggestion that Indian-Americans are somehow taboo,” said Sanjay Puri, chairman of the 50,000-member U.S.-India Political Action Committee. “That is not the message we want any leader to be presenting.”

In a letter to Obama’s campaign, the group asked the Illinois Democrat to "respond directly" to the reports and to "let us know if indeed your staff is promoting these hurtful stereotypes."

At issue are documents distributed to some news organizations by Obama aides on a not-for-attribution basis that offered a harsh analysis of the Clintons. One appeared under the headline “Hillary Clinton (D-Punjab)’s personal financial and political ties to India.”

A copy of the documents was obtained by Clinton’s campaign, which then provided them to the Tribune and other news organizations. Obama’s campaign has confirmed the authenticity of the documents.

The Obama campaign said it regrets parts of the campaign-generated papers.

"Barack Obama has been a longtime friend of the Indian-American community and our campaign is fortunate to have strong support from Indian-Americans across the country,” Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement. “The intent of the document was to discuss the issue of outsourcing, but we regret the tone that parts of the document took.”

The release of the opposition research by the Obama camp was prompted by the Thursday release of new personal financial documents by Clinton's campaign.

Here are the documents:

**Insert Bruce anti-Obama/liberal media attack**

Out trashing the opposition once our wife cuts ties to any association with WalMart. Clinton may be (D-Punjab), and Obama could be (D-Bangladesh).

So it is ok for Obama's wife to have a conflict of interest with Wal Mart but not for Hillary's husband. This is a joke right. Here is a lil advice for Barrack "who me" Obama. Those that live in glass houses should not throw stones. I wonder if Hillary ever argued on the senate floor on behalf of a company that she had invested in like Obama did, or if she was involved with a Rezko like individual and then lied about doing him favors like Obama did. Lets see Obama par t of the Chicago Machine, HIllary not part of the Chicago Machine. Enough said. Obama = Hypocrite

I suppose no one would take offense if this had been

Clinton(D-Paris) or Clinton(D-London) or Clinton(D-Johannesburg)

Political correctness gone amok.

I wish to touch the subject, but only lightly.

This is not the first time, Barak Obama has made a racially "insensitive" remark in the course of his campaign.

Back in December of 2006, Obama was asked if he was concerned that voters wouldn’t support
him because he’s an African-American with a foreign sounding name. His answer was a bit disappointing. He acknowledged that some voters wouldn't vote for a candidate because of his race, but then added, "those are the same voters who probably wouldn't vote for me because of my politics."

I don't think I'm being overly sensitive when I point out that his statement could easily be interpreted to mean that he equates all non-pseudo-liberals (including conservatives) with racists. After all, anyone who would vote against someone "just" because of his skin color is unreasonably prejudiced because of race - i.e. a racist.

I wonder, sometimes, just how hard he thinks this stuff through.

Fresh. A new kind of politics. America's (indeed the world's) only hope. Postively transcendant.

Yeah, right.

Can someone who can't even get his act together when it comes to controlling his own campaign operatives, and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he did not know, really be trusted to lead this country?...

What's the matter RNC? Tired of Bruce bursting the media's Obama euphoria?

Every now and then they have to print a fluff story that kind of puts Obama on the defensive, but in the end Obama comes to the rescue and everything ends up being ok. Then we can all go back to Obama the image.

HOOORAYY!

I wonder if any of the commenters above, let alone Sanjay Puri himself, actually read the Obama camp's backgrounders on Sen. Clinton...

It's pretty clear that (a) the Obama camp's "Punjab" reference simply picked up on something Sen. Clinton and her supporter said themselves and (b) the memo didn't stereotype Indians or Indian-Americans at all but instead attacked Sen. Clinton for promoting the outsourcing of American jobs and aggressively seeking the support of folks involved in outsourcing jobs.

For those who haven't bothered to read the memo, here is the relevant passage (complete with date and source reference):

Sen. Clinton (D-Punjab) Joked That She Was Senator From The Punjab Region In India. "At the fundraiser hosted by Dr Rajwant Singh at his Potomac, Maryland, home, and which raised nearly $50,000 for her re-election campaign, Clinton began by joking that, 'I can certainly run for the Senate seat in Punjab and win easily,' after being introduced by Singh as the Senator not only from New York but also Punjab." [India Abroad, 3/17/06] (emphasis added)

That is neither a stereotype nor a slur. It is a reference to an actual event which shines a bright light on the fact that Sen. Clinton has actively worked to represent foreign interests (more than just the interests of immigrants) as a United States Senator.

If this issue blows up big-time, it'll be Sen. Clinton who will end up with egg on her face for essentially working to export American jobs.

Obama is dropping like a rock in the dem polls, soon he'll be in the John Edwards territory of 8-12%
Don't you democrat lefty fools that really think Barack "Hussein" Obama can be our next president get the Clinton message yet???...Stick a fork in him he's DONE!
Yes,Hill and Bill are pro's at this, but America won't stand for her either...so just get use to saying... President Fred Thompson and V.P. Rudy Giuliani
An unbeatable ticket for American's that love this country.

"I don't think I'm being overly sensitive..."

- John W.

John,

Don't worry. You're not being overly sensitive. Just stupid.

Cheers.

Rob N., thanks for that post. Many people posting here aren't interested in taking the time to read the documents because then they would have to deal with reality instead of living in their comfortable bubble of partisan dogma.

As you suggested I read the documents and I don't see anything remotely insensitive. But I think the documents have some good points. The Clintons have very close ties with India and many wealthy Indian-Americans. (This is well known outside these documents.) And based on a couple of the examples provided in the documents, Sen. Clinton needs to reflect a little more on which country she is elected to serve.

Also, as an IT worker, I've followed the outsourcing story for over a decade. And I've seen first hand the disruption and stress caused to friends and colleagues when companies in the US suddenly move projects or offices overseas to save money with less expensive IT talent (mostly in India). Many of these are high quality, well paying jobs that could stay here if our political leaders took just a little initiative to help people more than corporations.

PS: I hadn't realized this til I saw basically this same blog post in print this morning (first section of the Saturday Trib).

The fellow complaining about "stereotypes" in the documents is the head of the US-Indian political action committee (USINPAC) -- Mr. Sanjay Puri.

That he is the USINPAC chief is indeed noted in the McCormick/Parsons article.

What is not noted is that he has worked hand in glove with Sen. Clinton to form the Congressional India Caucus. Sen. Clinton founded that caucus herself and is now co-chair of the Senate India Caucus.

What is also not noted is what Mr. Puri claims those "stereotypes" actually are -- just the weak he-said/she-said reporting that Mr. Puri claims there are stereotypes.

A little clarification on both his close relationship to Sen. Clinton and just what in the Obama memo he takes issue with would be valuable to the readers trying to discern what the flap is really about.

Just sayin'.

Sanjay Puri is also the founder, president and CEO of Optimos, an IT service company. http://www.optimos.com/board-of-directors.aspx

Optimos has a large Offshore Solution Center (their name) that receives major outsourcing contracts from US firms.

One has to believe that Sanjay never read the documents or is just trying to exploit the situation for his narrow self-interests.

I think this whole fuss is nothing but a mere storm in a Tea cup. however, remember the old adage, "the guilty one are always afraid". Mr. Sanjay Puri is probably afraid of something. The Indian community world wide is known to lobby and perhaps deliberately interfere with the electrol process. Many current and past corrupt regimes in Africa have been sustained by Bribes dished out by Indians tycoons.
