The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Several House Democrats who also are former state prosecutors today called for an investigation by the House Judiciary Committee leading to possible impeachment proceedings against Att’y Gen. Alberto Gonzales.

“The president, unfortunately, continues to defend the indefensible,’’ said Rep. Jay Inslee, a Washington state Democrat and former state prosecutor, speaking for a group of 15 House members who have experience as prosecutors or judges.

“There is a national embarrassment right now in the U.S. attorney general’s office,’’ Inslee said. “It needs to be remedied. And if the president will not do his job, we need to do ours.’’

“The American people deserve an attorney general who will shoot straight with them,’’ Inslee said, complaining that Gonzales has given Congress conflicting testimony in its probe of attorney firings. “He has given them evasions, half-truths and deceits.’’

This small group of Democrats is pressing something that House leaders aren’t ready to embrace yet – the House Judicary Committee has cited present and former White House staffers for contempt of Congress for refusing to testify in the investigation of the Justice Department’s firing of several federal prosecutors.

The White House has suggested that Justice isnt likely to refer that complaint to a U.S. attorney, citing previous opinions that White House staffers cannot be prosecuted for following the president’s orders to cite executive privilege in refusing to testify to Congress.

Also, while two presidents have faced impeachment, a member of the president’s Cabinet has not been impeached since 1876. William Belknap, secretary of war under president Ulysses S. Grant had profited from kickbacks from military contractors. Before the articles of impeachment were formally voted, on March 2, 1876, Belknap resigned. But the still House voted for his impeachment.

Tony Snow, White House press secretary, said today that the White House stands by Gonzales. Snow, former host of Fox News Sunday, also was asked why the White House had not offered anyone for that show Sunday to rebut criticism of Gonzales. The show had sought someone, the host said, but “we had no takers.’’

"A lot of times a number of considerations go into whether you're going to put somebody on a Sunday show,'' Snow said. "Do not read the fact that somebody did not appear on my old program, Fox News Sunday, as a sign that we're backing away from the attorney general. We are not.''

Rep. Tom Udall (D.-N.M.), former atorney general for Utah for eight years and and a former federal prosecutor, said today: “This particular attorney general, Alberto Gonzales, has lost his bearings. He is no longer performing the role of pursuing justice.’’

“This is a sad undertaking, in my view,’’ said Rep. Ben Chandler (D-Ky.), a former state attorney general in Kentucky.

“Being the chief law enforcement officer of the United States puts you in a position where you’re an example,’’ Chandler said. “Justice should be blind. Justice should be even-handed. And this attorney general… has given indications that he has been preferential in his pursuit of justice in this country, that he has attempted to fire certain prosecutors because they have refused to behave in such a way that would favor one group over another.

“We don’t have every fact,’’ Chandler allowed, which is why the group is calling for an investigation before any determination is made on impeachment. “I don’t think anybody wants to prejudge anybody before making sure all the facts are brought out.’’

The White House problem with Gonzo is the same one they had with Scooter i.e. he's knows all of their dirty lying secrets and they couldn't trust in his keeping his mouth shut if he were to become a "wild card" outside of the W. administration.

I would suggest having Satancheney for Attorney General until you mentioned the AG needs to be someone who will shoot straight WITH the American public, not AT them.

Al surely does have a good job though: just sit and grin for the next 2 years and get full pay. If he's ever asked a question, he only has to say "I don't recall," or "I don't know," and bush will give him a glowing recommendation.

There is no such thing as shame in the Cheneybush regime. Shame presupposes a sense of right and wrong. It's clear they don't have a clue.

All the facts out? Yeah right, we still don’t know what was discussed at the meeting with the VP and the energy companies when establishing energy policy for the country. Oh that’s right the VP claimed executive privilege, and now says he’s not part of the executive branch. Just another Republic piece of bull. So in the end we hear more lies and cover-up for this criminal administration. IMPEACH ALL OF THEM!!!

Ben Chandler and all the rest of the Dems in the House and Senate are hypocrites. They have had 6 hearings a day to elicit the truth about all their little gotcha partisan games to make Gonzales look bad. They have held some 350 hearings to no avail. Tony Snow said all the documents given by the President to the Congress if laid end to end would be higher than the White House. Chuckie Schumer, Dickie Durbin, Henry Waxman, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Patrick Leahy have had so many hearings, they rather than Gonzales, can't remember they wouldn't know the truth if it bit them. Dems and the truth can't co-exist because they disregard it in favor of their mantra. If they say your a liar --you are a liar period. All they are doing is playing games partisan games over and over to impeach any Republican. Gonzales is their victim. They are piranhas. Conyers and Leahy know this. RINO Specter is afraid he'll look bad if he doesn't act bi-partisan but even Specter knows they are doing a number on Gonzales. For all their protestations they are anti-Hispanic. This isn't good government--the Dems are slitting their throats to please Daily Kos, MoveOn.org, Code Pink, People for the American Way,the Center for Progressives all Clinton war room front groups and wackos all. Just wait for 08 Dems you have blown it just keep picking on Alberto you'll see. Jerry White, Springfield, IL P.S. I forgot to mention Socialist in Chief Russ Feingold and his righteous rant.

None of this matters. Bush is just waiting for the summer break. Once congress is out Gonzo will decide to "spend more time with his family." Then Bush will make a recess apointment. That way he doesn't have to deal with confirmation hearings and gets what he wants - a yes man as AG.

As for the person who stated that the Dems are anti-hispanic, what a JOKE. I'm so surprised all normal Repubs havne't crawled under rocks to hide their shame at what this administration has done. There are actually still blind Bush followers and supporters? I can't believe it. BTW, I'm a registered Republican and I am very ashamed at what the party has become.

ITS LIKE SAND IN THE HOUR GLASS AND THE WORLD TURNS.

I'm impressed by the President and all of his men. To the end, Until Next week or this Friday.

You know it's that time, its either "REHAB" in Arizona or "Walley World in Florida." Maybe lunch with the last Press Secretary. Maybe he will send Tom DeLay a call and see how his investigation is going and does he need a "Trial Lawyer."

Maybe he will find Foley by weeks end and make him tell the truth. Please someone distract Mr. Leahy before he hires his 12 year old son and they hit the retrieve button and all my emails are found.

Impeach no Inherent Contempt and arrest.

Better yet, lets wait like Spector said, so his dirty dealings in this "Purge of the prosecutors" comes out. But we all know...

I want to be with my family is coming.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT AND WELL STATED. THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

Jerry White, why don't you take a cue from your fellow Repub Gerry who has seen the light and give it up? How you can continue to defend the blatant stonewalling of this administration is beyond comprehension. Your attempt to belittle those trying to do their job, what we pay them for, providing some oversight and maintain the system of checks and balances as provided for in the Constitution (or don't you care about upholding that?) by giving them cutesy nicknames like Dickie and Chuckie is just pathetic, so give it up, OK? And trying to throw out the Clinton canard is futile, since most of us have long since seen that the Clintons and the DLC are part of the problem, not a solution. Please, stop with the pathetic Repub mantra of Congress wasting their time when they should be "getting down to business"--this IS what we the people would like them to do--get out of Iraq and get this admin. out of power and restore the system of checks and balances.

Geez, just keep it up Demoncrats. The more nonsense you folks pull, the better the chances for the GOP in 2008.

The only question I have is who, once Gonzo resigns, will Bush choose? With a recess appointment he could choose anyone...

Maybe Harriet Meyers... Nah, she is already neck deep in the attorney firing scandel.

Fred Thompson... Nah, he is the only Republican canidate that GOoPers can look at without vomiting. He needs to stay in the race.

Sylvester Stalone! Perfect! Put Rambo on the stand! Go for it Dems, he-he-he.

"Dems and the truth can't co-exist because they disregard it in favor of their mantra. If they say your a liar --you are a liar period. All they are doing is playing games partisan games over and over"

Are you sure you're not talking about the current Administration, Jerry?

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry. . You know that little red pill they give you each day shortly after you wake up, you know, when they enter your room and say, "It's time for your morning vitamin, Mr. White." Yes, THAT little red pill. Well, let me clue you in, Jerry. It ain't a vitamin. Hell, it ain't even medication! Nosirre. It's a failed experimental drug called Republivitra.

Originally created in the early sixties by a now-defunct pharmaceutical company, it was envisioned as a quick way to insert conservative thoughts into people who wanted to think conservatively, while blocking all influx of liberal thoughts. This was seen as a counter to a competing drug company's product offering called Democriagra, a little blue pill that did much of what the red pill did, except backwards of course: It espoused liberalism while eschewing conservatism. Both Republivitra and Democriagra never made it past the trials stage, but for different reasons.

Democriagra was so effective that it made the user of the drug realize that he or she didn't even need the drug! The patients stopped using it. The drug company finally figured that there wasn't any money to be made in a drug which a user quickly stops taking. However, Republivitra was stopped before FDA approval could be sought because of it's terrible side-effects. You see, a Republivitra user is instantly and horribly afflicted with a severe case of dyslexia. Yep. Users can't read or write a whit. Moreover, it also rendered its users foggy and confused, making concentrating on any subject nearly impossible. Damn shame, really. A terrible thing to see.

But not all hope is lost, Jerry. I'm sure the condition abates after the drug is discontinued.

Roger Morris-

Wow! I'm simply in AWE. What else can I possibly say? Brilliant!

I enjoyed Tony Snow's assertion about how many documents the White House has sent over and your mention of it Jerry. The point is not how many documents, but which ones. The real tragedy here is the lost documents in the form of emails sent via GOP email accounts. Federal law requires all presidential correspondence be kept for historical records. Even if the documents are sealed, classified, or protected by executive privilege they must be kept. This is how history will judge the current administration, by studying their documents long after we are all dead. That can't happen now because the administration chose to use these GOP accounts illegally. This is the type of action that blisters the hide of those Americans that love the Constitution and the rule of law regardless of party. We have a system of checks and balances for a reason, read your history and realize how brilliant our founding fathers were. They would look at the current administration's power grab with disappointment and disdain.

I still can't fathom that there would be anyone left who has respect for our current leader, Democrat or Republican.

Glenn Smith wrote today in a TruthOut article about Congress, Bush and the Real Constitutional Crisis that's worth a read. See link.
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/073107E.shtml

Rather than just Bush bashing (albeit it is fun) the American people (including certain bloggers on this site) should focus on how the democracy that we love so dearly (enough to blog about) is slowly being eroded.

Wake up!!!!

Hasn't Congress some work it should be doing? Most of us are convinced that Gonzo lies and is dumb as a post. It is a good idea to bring him in and let him lie a litle for the cameras. But do not get carried away. Leave him in place to be a symbol of the corrupt Bush legacy.

Impeach the buffoon then prosecute him for obstruction of justice and perjury. The overwhelming majority of Americans would tell you he was dishonest and deceitful with his testimony. He is an absolute disgrace to the DOJ and the U.S. Constitution. He has done nothing positive or constructive since he became Attorney General.

None of this matters. Bush is just waiting for the summer break. Once congress is out Gonzo will decide to "spend more time with his family." Then Bush will make a recess apointment. That way he doesn't have to deal with confirmation hearings and gets what he wants - a yes man as AG.

Yep.

Gerry:

It would do no good for registered Republicans, like you and I, to hide under a rock in shame. The better and appropriate response would be to stand up and express our outrage over what Duh'bya and his neo-con entourage have done in our names, and how they have wrecked (intentionally, I think) the party that once represented honest and thoughtful conservatives.

I think they should all be removed from office and put on an island. We can make Newt Gingrich their warden, since he seems to want another important job. Senator Ted Stevens can go with them.

Do some of these Democrats in Congress ever have an original thought in their minds? Impeach anything that moves. Most come from districts that have numerous problems and they spend their time imitating Don Quixote. Man, talk about tilting at wind mills. It does keep the laugh meter spinning.

Sequim,

Our COUNTRY has problems too, and I think somehow they might be trying to deal with those as well.

I admire your ability to laugh, though. Kind of like Don Q, you manage to see something other than reality when you look at the world.

Impeach anything that moves...

Sequim says (nice little rain shadow town, Sequim is, pity the residents aren't capable of rational thought)

So impeaching a president for lying about an extra-marital affair isn't going after anything that moves? I thought the whole affair was tawdry and didn't support the president in the election, but still, it was a minor issue compared to all the evils of this current mis-administration.

JMS..Nice article. Congress, both sides of the isle, needs to get a spine and reign this administration in.

Tony Snow got his comment straight from the Watergate script and All the President's Men. This is a Nixon re-run, usurping executive power to use for political data-mining and election fraud. They're just hoping most people don't remember. John Dean's Conservative Without Conscience details the 'evolution' and what a menace this has become.

I think ole Gonzo is making fools of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

More's the pity: I don't think they have the balls to do anything to him.
