The Swamp

by Mike Dorning

Democratic candidates next month will hold the first ever televised presidential campaign forum devoted to issues of interest to gay voters, a debate that is likely to touch on such emotional, deeply personal issues as gay marriage, adoption and service in the military.

Democratic candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) and Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) already have confirmed they will participate, organizers said. That is likely to put pressure on other Democratic candidates to attend a forum geared to this significant, Democratic-leaning constituency.

The questioners will include singer and gay rights advocate Melissa Etheridge, as well as Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, a gay rights group that is co-sponsoring the event.

The forum. scheduled for 8 pm Central Time in Los Angeles on Aug. 9, will be broadcast live on Logo, a cable television channel geared toward gay audiences. The event will also be available on the Internet through live streaming video on LOGOonline.com.

“In the 2008 presidential election, issues of concern to the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) community have already been at the forefront of the national conversation,” Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, said in a statement. “From the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ to the recent signing of a civil unions bill in New Hampshire, there is no doubt that voters will demand answers to important questions affecting our community.”

“We’re honored to give the presidential candidates a historic opportunity to share their views directly with the LGBT audience,” said Brian Graden, president, entertainment, MTV Networks Music Group, the corporate parent of the Logo channel. “This forum continues MTV Networks’ tradition of engaging vital niche audiences with voting and the electoral process.”

No word yet on whether there will be a gay issues forum featuring Republican presidential candidates, whose party base includes strong representation of social conservatives.

Ok, this is ridiculous. So, now we're gonna have debates just for black people, just for Hispanic people, just for gay people, etc. I would think the Democrats would need a debate just for DUMB people. After all, that is their biggest consistuency!

When do the republicans hold their version?

One of the questioners will be Little Johnny Lickalot. He'll be asking on behalf of Mary Cheney.

And Mary & Ms. Cheney?

At the Repubic Family values debate, the honorable Sen.Vitter will be the moderator!

WASHINGTON (July 12) - New allegations tie Sen. David Vitter to a high-priced brothel in his hometown, one day after he publicly apologized for his connection to an alleged prostitution ring in Washington, D.C.

Little Johnny Virgin,

You're showing your true Republican bigotry colors.

Do you have anymore questions as to why your guys (GOP) are losing elections nowdays?

Little Johhny D,
Americans aren't a homogenous constituency with all the same needs. Black Americans have different issues of interest than do whites, Latinos, and yes, gay people, because gays are people also. And you want to talk about which party caters to DUMB people? How easy would it to be a Republic? Your only vocabulary and line of thinking could easily be simply repeating "that's mine not yours!" and "you're different from me, I hate you!". Not only does your party appeal to the KKK and neo-Nazi groups but also to a cult, based on cars covered in stickers driving in circles for hours, called the South

So many posts from John E., er Raving Loon, er Janet. The three-in-one Loon!!
Janet, dear, sorry but I subscribe to the notion that whether black, white, gay, straight, ASian, European, Hispanic, that living here in the U.S. that we all share common elements and beliefs, successess, joys, failures, etc. Certainly there are some minor variations of needs, wants, etc., but the fact remains we are the UNITED states of America, not the Black State or Gay State, etc.
But thanks for proving once again the true racists and dividers in the world: the Loony Left.

How irritating! Extortion by political correctness-

Show up to my debate, or you will NOT be supported by my special interest group..

i guess in a 2 year long campaign we are going to get more of this...

I will wait patiently for the " Republicans for reuniting David Lee Roth with Van Halen" debates! makes about as much sense..

Johnny, except for the Muslim Americans right? We're supposed to fear and suspect them. That's what you said in the other thread in support of profiling them.

Just imagine, the nerve of these groups! Demanding that they find out which candidate will publicly voice support for their issues of concern before they write them large checks from their PACs.

Complete absurdity.

Speaking purely politically, why would Democrats offer themselves up to gays in this way? Any homosexual who votes Republican must have a sado-masochistic side yearning to breathe free. By electing Democrats, gays can rest easy that they won't be used by the party in power as scapegoats for all that is wrong with the world, which can't be said for the representatives of the "Grand Old Party."

As for lil' John's usual insane ramblings, maybe he hadn't noticed the statistics that the blue state electorate has higher incomes, higher iq's, higher graduation rates, lower divorce rates, higher rates of health insurance and provide an enormous subsidy of tax dollars to our red state brethren (who can rail against high taxes while their low taxes are subsidized by the economically powerful blue states). Add to that the coastlines and almost all the nation's great cities, and its quite clear that those "loony lefties" in the blue states are on to something.

Once again John D inserts foot in mouth. Janet bear with john D, he's a little slow. John there is nothing wrong with debates for divergent voting constituencies. The more candidates debate the more information voters get to make an informed decision. Keep on commenting John because it just shows you and your ilk for what you are. Irrelevant and outdated.

Ummmm, if you republicans are soooo smart, how is it you misspelled "constituency"?

Oh, and yes, running for office requires meeting with, and talking to the voters you are trying to appeal to. That's probably why the republican party is now in its' death throes. They've run out of wacko reichwing religious fanatics.

So sad. Too bad. Not.

What's wrong with catering to a specific segment of the voting public?

The republicans have been having debates just for white people for decades.

Aside from the passive aggressive, racist "The republicans have been having debates just for white people for decades." comment ... you are not making sense.

Using your logic, it is ok to cater to a specific group- so a debates for white people would be okay with you?

Bryan, sorry, but those if you look at the voting patterns of your blue states, your little numbers game falls apart. In Illinois, for instance, take away the city of Chicago and suddenly Illinois is a red state. In California, take away the cities of LA and San Francisco and suddenly California is a "red" state. In New York, take away New York City and gee, New York state is red. Take away Philadelphia and suddenly Pennsylvania is red. In Michigan take away Detroit and that state becomes red. In all of these states and more, more counties go Republican than they do Democrat. Chicago suburbs, still Republoican. Suburbs of LA, still Republican.
Frankly, there are time I wish Chicago left Illinois. Then we would have not have the federally investigated boy governor Blablooeyavtich, nor would we have DICK Durbin or Barack Obama (I mean the Chicago LIBune did set the stage for Barack by torpedoing Jack Ryan.
And Brian from Oregon: go back to smoking some of the Oregonian weed! You are clueless like the rest of your ilk.

John D.,

Thesaurus - apply directly to your vocabulary. Thesaurus - apply directly to your vocabulary.

John D, get some prose of your own and stop parroting everything I say. I cite the word ilk which I never read in one of your posts until I used it awhile back. Also when I call out Bruce as an RNC stooge which he obviously is since he won't refute it, don't start accusing every writer at the Tribune of being DNC operatives. Write something original or at least sane. Your pathetic!

John D.,

You're a political genius!

Take away Democratic voters and Republicans win elections.

Who would have thought it was that simple?

RNC Bruce know you're cutting in on his action?

Brian, Oregon,

We're a little more PC here. It's not "white people."

It's women with big hair and the men in white shoes who love them.

Mr. Illogic Man, sorry I've been using "ilk" long before you decided to copy me. Even your buddy Doogie may atest to that.
Come on, everyone knows the Loon Left uses the same lines all the time: President Chimpy; Bush lied, people died; Darth Cheney; Cheney and Haliburton; blah, blah, blah.

Dougie suppose we just secede from Illinois with petitions we could do that and John D and I would be in seventh heaven why put up with Cook running our state they can't even get a budget done in Springfield or run Chicago or Cook without hellacious taxes seems we have weirdos telling us what we're going to do. Hey, this maybe our answer I'm looking in to this possibility. Illinois is a good state to raise kids if you don't live in Cook why should we have to listen to Blagos diatribes--ridiculous. Illinois is a traditional conservative state south of I 80 --the future could be bright instead of my way or the highway. Think about it --and it wouldn't cost us downstaters near as much--stop the angst just secede downstaters don't be held hostage any longer! J

Oh Doogie, I would love to take away just about ALL democratic voters. How about you round up a bunch of your loony buddies to come and drink some real tasty Jim Jones Kool-Aide?
Then Illinois can be rid of the worst governor since Dan Walker (I mean not even the legislators of his own party like the Boy Governor!), we can get rid of Prostate Cancer Little Liar Stroger too. Then we can work on your buddies in other states too, like those in California, Vermont, and a few other places!

In the year or so since I have been reading these posts, you have become shriller and nastier. Like all wingnuts, you will blame someone else for it, but I think it's because the pressure of defending the most lying, immoral, sociopathic politicians ever is getting to you.

Maybe Keith Olberman.... (Countdown to zero ratings) can be the moderator and ask these democratic front-runners about whips, vibrators, masks, domination and all the things the dems are experts on.
...Oh,it's been 39 years ago today,since Teddy Kennedy(D)swam away and left a young girl,Mary Jo--alone--to drown.

Paulo
P.S.Maybe the moderator should be Barney Frank(D)...he has experience!

Paulo

All political candidates try to seem sincere when they're campaigning. If only they would keep those promises once they're elected. That the Dems have addressed the Gay community is a HUGE step forward.

"In Illinois, for instance, take away the city of Chicago and suddenly Illinois is a red state."

Little Johnny did you forget Adlai Stevenson and Paul Simon? I do believe they were not from Chicago. And don't look now - but the collar counties around Chicago are starting to turn more and more Democratic.

And I believe Rep. John Murtha is not from Philadelphia either. So how do you explain that one?

The dems are about nothing but a munch of splinter special interest groups. I wonder what their friends at "big lanor" are thinking? Do you think a light bulb just went on there.

This bunch of pandering canidates: Hillary and the dwarfs will bend over backwards (no pun intended) for any group. They bent over to the move-on organization where NOT to debate. Can't debate on that evvvvvvil Fox News.

Personally, I can't wait to their the questions and answers that will push them further from the Amwerican mainstream on social issues. How many will stand-up against gay marriage on this stage?

I wonder if the questioneers will ask a question relating to taxation since singles carry a highy taxation burden in this country.

Sub-Commandante Paulo please get back on your meds!!!

Oh Catherine, you have hurt me! Me shrill and nasty? I take you miss all the stuff on here from your Loony Left buddies. Or are their posts acceptable to you? Funny, how I never see one Loony Lefty in here take another to task for their BS.
Anyway, Catherine, if you really want to discuss immoral, mean, sociopathic politicians, I'm all ears. We can discuss Rod, Todd Stroger, Alexi Giannoulous, Dorothy Tillman, Jan Schakowsky (you know her husband is in prison??), Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid, Gary Condit (what did happen to that poor California girlfriend of his?), Bill and Hillary, LBJ, Robert Byrd (I'd love to hear more stories of his days as a KKK leader). Would you like me to continue?

Addressing the Gay and Lesbian community is a smart and important part of this election. Unfortunately, there is still plenty of ignorance and bigotry out there (look at JOHN D). There is a group based in Atlanta called American Vision that calls themselves a "religious" organization. They are calling for homosexuals to be given the death penalty simply for being homosexual. The issues for gays and lesbians are just as real as they are for everyone else, and they deserve to be heard. If the Republicans held a debate for old, fat, senile, uneducated white men, I bet John D. wouldn't be bitching.

Oh Mrs. J, once again you folks with the race-baiting, or in this case, "lifestyle choice" baiting. And, as usual, Mrs. J. you are wrong.
First of all, I have gone on record in this thing called the Swamp that gays should be allowed to serve in the military, don't ask don't tell is dated and useless, that gays who do serve are patriots. I criticized Gen. Pace for his comments about gays a couple of months ago. COurse, where did it get me? Your ilk using gay slurs against me! Yeah, your ilk is so nice and clean!
Now, geting back to the work useless, isn't that pretty much what you and the rest of your brethren are??

"lifestyle choice" baiting.

I gotta give it to you, John. At least you're funny. You can't be living in the 21st century and believe that homosexuals choose a lifestyle. Why would anyone "choose" a life that makes them society's new N word. If you're so accepting, John, would you allow a gay couple to have dinner at your house, live next door to you, or babysit your children? Bigotry is heavily ingrained in a lot of people. It's not your fault, but you need to recognize it when you see it.

Here would be a good question:

Science is always finding new discoveries regarding genetics. If the scientific community can isolate the gene that makes a child gay, would you approve of the mothers right to abort the child for the sole reason that the child is gay?

There is a group based in Atlanta called American Vision that calls themselves a "religious" organization. They are calling for homosexuals to be given the death penalty simply for being homosexual

Mrs. Jesus. I've heard of that group. They're a coalition of many fringe, fundamental Christian churches in the south. I wouldn't take them seriously. They represent the feelings of many people, but they have no legal grounds to execute all homosexuals. BTW, They also want to execute any parent who allows their child to have an abortion.

Mrs. J, I put quote marks around "lifestyle choice" because it isn't a choice. Anyway, Mrs. J, to answer your question a lifelong friend of mine is gay. Did not know it until several years ago. He also served in the military. I was shocked when he told me he was gay. And, Mrs. J, I am still his friend. Why would I end a couple decades of friendship because of who he is? He was a great friend before I knew and a great friend after I knew.
Also, Mrs. J., the sister to a friend of mine is gay and she has a partner. I've eaten dinner with them, been to Bulls games with them and Sox games too.
Any more judgements, dear??

And Giraffe, that group may think they are Christian, but they are not. They are whacked out folks, just like that Loony preacher from Kansas and his minions who go protesting at dead soldier's funerals thinking they died protecting homosexuality or some weird thinking like that. Anyway, those folks don't have the first clue about Christianity and very well will find that out when it's their time to pass.

Oh and by the way - when D's refuse to participate in FAUX news debates because they are just for bigoted, single issue, close minded, arrogant, vicious viewers, the connies here seem to think that's bad. Anyone seen the results of the NAACP debate for republitardsd last week? Only one candidate showed up - Tom Tancredo. Shows how much the republicrites value any vote beyond white, male christians.

I think this is a wonderful historical event..let us not forget that it is estimated that 10-15% of the population is exclusively homosexual..and i do say exclusively..it's probably more but that is about the % that admit to it..add to that numbe all those who don't admit to it openly..also consider that approximately 50% of the population is bisexual so they may share some concerns that gays have as well..when you do the math, this is a very large number of voters that you don't want to alienate, therefore a smart democratic candidate would seek to appeal to and seek to compel them (gays and bisexuals and everyone else related) to vote for them..it makes a lot of sense...

i liked the question someone asked about when is the republic gay debate?? AS IF that will ever happen!!
