Roy Blunt was quite blunt Wednesday on the subject of U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays.
The 4th District Republican said last week that if he does not get strong support to be top Republican in 2009 on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, he will not seek re-election. And if re-elected, he said, he would resign if he did not get the committee slot.
So, Blunt, House minority whip and second-ranking House Republican, was asked if Shays had that support.
Blunt smiled and suggested Shays stop talking about it.
"Members try to gauge support for what their opportunities are here all the time," Blunt said. "Certainly my view is it's not something anybody benefits from a commitment or a discussion on."
What does he think of Shays' chances?
"I'm not going to be talking about what the Steering Committee (the special House Republican panel that votes on committee posts) is going to do in the next Congress," he said.
So what are you telling Shays?
"I wouldn't tell you what I'm telling him," Blunt laughed.
But he did have a warning of sorts: "It's not a good thing for anybody to be talking about publicly."
And Shays' comment?
He said he and Blunt have had good conversations.

DEMOCRATS NEED TO SHUT DOWN THIS WHITE HOUSE, DEMOCRATS NEED TO FILLIBUSTER ANYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH IRAQ.
WIN BY LEADING.
It only seems that there will be just the petiphiles left in the GOP STOMP towards 2008.
