President Bush, voicing optimism for the American economy, declined to speculate today if a recession is coming.

“I think I got a B in Econ 101,’’ the president said at a White House press conference this morning. “I got an A, however, in keeping taxes low.''

His tax cuts, the president asserted, have helped the U.S. economy recover from the recession he faced when he took office and the terrorist attacks that followed. “I say that the fundamentals of our nation’s economy are strong,’’ Bush said today. “There is no question that there is some unsettling times in the housing market…. (but) I’m optimistic about our economy.’’

The president, in a press conference that lasted little longer than a half-hour, repeatedly played off his own image as a poor student, noting that he likes to remind people that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has “the PhD… I’m the C student,’’ he said, but look who’s the leader and who’s the adviser.

Bush, asked about former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan criticizing him for failing to veto out-of-control spending during two terms as president, said: “My feelings are not hurt… I respectfully disagree with Alan Greenspan saying that this administration did not face the fiscal situation we faced in good fashion. We did.''

The president also called on Congress today to avoid sending him legislation on the renewal of a massive federal health care plan for children that raises the eligibility level for families to as much as four times the federal poverty level.

Vowing to veto the bill as a “federalization’’ of health care, Bush called on Congress to send him a “clean’’ extension of the existing State Children’s Health Insurance Program, in which the federal government provides most of the funding for states that match it to provide health care for the children of lower to middle-income families.

With the federal program up for renewal at month’s end, House Democratic leaders have pushing an increase in eligibility that includes subsidies for families of four making up to $83,000 per year -- though Senate leaders are eyeing a more restrained level of three times poverty. Bush complains that all the Democrats are playing hostage with the bill “to score political points.’’

“I believe this is a step toward federalization of health care,’’ Bush said, “and that’s why I’m going to veto the bill.’’

The Democrats, drawing a page from the playbook of Republicans who criticized Sen. John Kerry for first supporting the war in Iraq and then voting against funding for it, complained today that Bush has performed an about-face on the “SCHIP’’ issue.

“President Bush was for expanding SCHIP before he was against it,’’ the House Democratic Caucus said in a statement issue before Bush issued his veto threat. '''This is a stark reversal from his views on SCHIP during his 2004 re-election when he was willing to say anything to get re-elected. In his speech to the Republican National Convention, Bush said: ‘America's children must also have a healthy start in life . . . In a new term, we will lead an aggressive effort to enroll millions of poor children who are eligible but not signed up for government health insurance programs. We will not allow a lack of attention, or information, to stand between these children and the health care they need.'”

Bush also was asked about his concern for the situation in Jena, La., where people are amassing to protest the arrests of several black youths for an attack on a white youth and the dangling of a noose from a schoolyard tree where black students had assembled. And he was asked if the refusal of Republican candidates to attend a debate in Baltimore sponsored by a black radio talk show host is a sign that his party has lost its connection to African-American voters.

"My advice to whoever will be our nominee is to reach out to the African-American community, as well as other communities,’’ Bush said. “The events in Louisiana have saddened me…. I feel strongly that there out to be justice.’’

Asked if he will be a liability or an asset to Republicans seeking election next year, he snapped: “Strong asset.’’ Those who campaign on strong national security “will do well,’’ he said, and those who campaign on cutting taxes “will do well.''

Bush was asked about the MoveOn.org newspaper ad in which Gen. David Petraeus was labeled “General Betray Us.’’

“I thought the ad was disgusting,’’ he said. “I was disappointed that more leaders in the Democrat Party did not speak out against that ad,’’ he said, suggesting that it tells him that Democrats are more concerned about offending a “left-wing’’ organization than they are about offending the military.

“That was a sorry deal,’’ the president said.

MoveOn.org 's Eli Pariser, executive director of the political action committee, responded: "What’s disgusting is that the president has more interest in political attacks than developing an exit strategy to get our troops out of Iraq and end this awful war. ''

The president complains that the level to which Democrats want to raise eligibility for health care coverage under the federal-and-state-financed SCHIP will encourage families to give up private insurance in some cases for new federally-funded coverage.

This is “an incremental step toward the goal of government health care for everyone,’’ Bush said, accusing the Democrats of holding the bill hostage over the September 30th expiration of the program. “In 10 days, the SCHIP… is set to expire… Democrats in Congress have decided to pass a bill that they know will be vetoed… Health care for these children should not be held hostage.’’

Asked about Iran’s ambitions for nuclear power, Bush said, “There is a better way forward for them than… isolation…. We’ll keep the pressure on them. The objective, of course is to solve this peacefully.’’

Bush, however, repeatedly refused to comment on questions about what Israel was targeting with an air-strike inside Syria, and whether he knows if North Korea has been helping Syria develop nuclear weaponry.

“I’m not going to comment on the matter,’’ said Bush, repeating the statement when he was asked again and inviting the reporter for NBC News who asked it: “Would you like another question? You’re welcome to ask another question, if you like, on another subject.’’

The question turned to Iraq, and Bush underscored his strategy for “victory’’ there.

“Progress will yield fewer troops,’’ Bush said, pressed on the question of Iraq’s failure to make progress on political reconciliation of warring factions in the country.

“Part of the reason why there is not the instant democracy in Iraq is because people are still recovering from Saddam Hussein’s rule… People ask, where is Mandela?’’ Bush said, with a figurative reference to the living Nelson Mandela, leader of the movement for freedom in South Africa. “Mandela is dead… Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas.’’

He declined to say if North Korea is supplying Syria with nuclear technology.

“We expect them to honor their commitment to give up weapons,’’ Bush said of North Korea. “To the extent they are proliferating, we expect them to give up proliferation… It’s a general statement that we expect them not to be proliferating.’’

So Bush lied during the 2004 campaign. Don't act so shocked, all Bush does is lie.

As to people campaigning on cutting taxes I say why don't you focus on cutting spending to the point where we can afford tax cuts? I'm all for lower taxes, but only if they are warrented.

This government has grown far too big since Bush took office. What is a Civil Libertarian / Fiscal Conservative to do?

Maybe Bloomberg will make an Independent run at the Presidency.

“I think I got a B in Econ 101...,'' Bush said. "I got an A, however, in keeping taxes low.''

What. a. Moron.

Outside of the 26% dead enders, Americans know that incurring record debt is just charging it to future taxpayers.

When the President was campaigning in 2000 he said his tax cut proposals were designed to put taxpayer money back into their pockets and keep it out of governement's hands. Funny how he now says they were designed to pull us out of recession. Guess the reasons change when circumstances dictate. Just as when WMD could not be found the rationale for invading Iraq changed 8 times over the course of a year. I forget, what is the latest excuse for our invasion?

Bush got a B in economics 101? So what, so did I.

Then again, this explains why he doesn't agree with Greenspan.

When it comes to economics, who are you going to believe?

omg, what a MORON

Beverly Hillbilly Jethro, Bush campaigned in 2000 to lower taxes to put more money in our pockets, and he did that. His tax cuts also helped shorten the recession he inherited and to grow the economy.

Nisleib, Bloomberg is not a fiscal conservative. He is a high tax liberal.

Also, in the end, because the Bush tax cuts did spur the economy, the government has received record revenues in recent years. You do not need to offset tax cuts with spending cuts. This is not to say I wouldn't love to see actual spending cuts. There are lots of government programs that can be cut, ended, updated, etc.

A "B" in Econ 101? That's at least 2 letter grades better than the socialists attempting to reframe the debate. A good economy is a good economy, but unfortunately not for everyone. However, that's better than a bad economy for everyone: Logic 101.

ahh.. classic bush

SAME OLD CRAP THE REPUBLICANS ALWAY'S PUT OUT
RICH GET RICHRER, AND HELL TO THE REST OF YOU POOR BASTARDS..... THINK ABOUT IT WE ALWAYS GO TO WAR WHEN THE G O P IS IN CONTROL...MONEY AND OIL.. A B

He seems more like a D student to me. Even a B student would understand that you need to balance the books, not run record deficits, to be in strong economic standing. And not fund a war while cutting taxes. Bush had a golden opportunity after 9/11 to focus people on principles like national service and fiscal responsibility. Instead he sent people to the mall.

"Bush: 'I think I Got A B In Econ 101"

Shrub is lying again, "someone" may have gotten a B for him, but he sure didn't do it.
According to some of his Yale classmates, they never ever saw him attend a class...yet he still found the time to make it to the Frat parties at night.

Bush is living proof that anyone can grow up to become president - and that it isn't necessarily a good thing.

i think he got way too good teachers in school. he should have received F in both courses

Dubya got an "A" in deserting from the Alabama Air National Guard.

“I think I got a B in Econ 101,’’ the president said at a White House press conference this morning. “I got an A, however, in keeping taxes low.''

yeah. you got an a for keeping taxes low...FOR THE RICH!!

does he even listen to himself talk?!? what an idiot.

A B in Econ 101, huh? I'd like to see a copy of his transcripts...

Bush, as president you get a big fat F. Worst president ever.

Actually, he didn't get a B, he got a C-. Bush lies again. See: http://www.americanpolitics.com/bushtranscript.html for his real transcript.

Bush likes to credit his tax cuts for the economy but his open-checkbook approach to government spending was more likely to spur the economy than his tax cuts. Is there any capital (money, human, political) that this guy hasn't fully spent? He's the most reckless president in history.

Actually, his transcript is publically available, and he got a C- in economics:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/09/20/bush-claims-he-got-a-b-i_n_65171.html

It would be nice if Swamp and other leaders in the media would bother to fact check these things. It should be patently obvious even to the Belt Way elite that EVERY statement by the President, no matter how inconsequential, is likely to be a falsehood.

I got a C in 101. But, I'm smart enough to know that the Canadian Dollar is now worth as much as the US Dollar. And we are worrying about REcession?

"WE KNOW, LOOK AT THE ECONOMY"

IF YOU THINK A B IS BETTER THAN AN A, THEN HILLARY WAS RIGHT AMERICA.

Bush suffers from "THE WILLING SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF"

666 BILLION DOLLARS 8 TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT, NOW ASKING CONGRESS TO RAISE THE CEILING.

TAKE THE ROOF OF THE SUCKA, TAKE THE ROOF OF THE SUCKA.

AND HE IS ADVOCATING WHAT HE GOT!

We got screwed for someone who thought he got a B but on a curve it was really a C-!

He thinks he got a B in Econonics 101. Duh.
I wouldn't believe a word this Mr. Bush says. He's a heavy weight, pathological liar.
Then he talks about his tax cuts, Another lie...my taxes have never been cut.

This bloke is living proof that "anyone can grow-up to be president of the United States."

Michael Serpe,

Although you are technically correct, it must be noted that if Dubya weren't born into the famiy he was, he'd be working in a fast-food drive-through somewhere screwing up your order.

If only Daddy Bush had spent more time with Dubya giving him more 'ata boys.

Sigh...

Folks, not any bloke can become president. The brain dead roadkill on the Left that populates this blog and others like the Huffington Post and DailyKooks can't even get jobs!

By Bob Woodward
Alan Greenspan chaired the Fed board for 18 years.

WASHINGTON — Alan Greenspan, the Federal Reserve's chairman for 18 years and the leading Republican economist for the past three decades, levels unusually harsh criticism at President Bush and the Republican Party in his new book, saying Bush abandoned the central conservative principle of fiscal restraint.

While condemning Democrats, too, for rampant federal spending, he offers former President Clinton an exemption. Clinton emerges as the political hero of "The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World," Greenspan's memoir, out Monday.

Greenspan, who calls himself a "libertarian Republican" but had an eight-year alliance with Clinton and Democratic Treasury secretaries in the 1990s, praises Clinton's mind and his tough anti-deficit policies, calling the former president's 1993 economic plan "an act of political courage."

But he expresses deep disappointment with Bush. "My biggest frustration remained the president's unwillingness to wield his veto against out-of-control spending," Greenspan writes.

Greenspan accuses the Republicans who presided over the party's majority in the House until last year of being too eager to tolerate excessive federal spending in exchange for political opportunity. The Republicans, he says, deserved to lose control of the Senate and House in last year's elections.

"The Republicans in Congress lost their way," Greenspan writes. "They swapped principle for power. They ended up with neither."

These comments are a shame and continue to show a lack of respect for our President. The economy is sound and terrorist haven't tried to hurt us again at home. This petty Bush-bashing needs to stop. If you don't like what Bush has to say, stop reading it...frankly the whining is getting really old!

Good one Doug and oh so true.
Thanks for making me laugh :o)

the moveon ad about general betray-us was dead on. betray-us is under the command of the commander in chief. this so called trusted general should be given no more credence than general colin powell. (remember the general who lied or was duped into lies to the united nations about wmd in iraq?

John E.,

Keep hope alive bro!

Hey Will Rogers, This is a free country, people can say what they want. So if the comments are getting old, STOP READING THEM!!!!!!!!!!

"Will Rogers",
You're not the only person here who loves their country. 70% of the country is unhappy with him. Its gone to far. We deserve better. Get over it.

Ya know our government is configured that if an independent congress got elected we could re-appropriate the assets of the Bush / Cheney (hell the bush administrations families cause nobody every hit the brakes for the american people) families and deport them based upon the failure of the highest public offices to serve the American People.... So until people actually research who their voting, how the candidate got to where they were, and the track record of decisions they have made, we're doomed to people like Dubya....obviously grades don't equal intelligence anymore.

The moveon.org ad may have been correct....has anybody researched General Petreaus' rise to a 4 star General....I heard he went pretty quick from 1 to 4 (maybe on account of being a parrot?) so how far off is that in regards to treason to the american people?

Will Rogers never met a man he didn't like.......Will Rogers never met "W"

What monumental tunnel vision this moron has!!!!!!!!! I say again, it's time to get the hillbillies and cowboys out of Washington and send them back south. We have had enough!!

So our president got a B in a calss. How many of us got a 4.0 in school? Those people can make their snide remarks, all 4 of them.

For those who don't like conservatives becasue they only want the rich to get richer - that's not true. They only want to keep what they've worked so hard for, while it seemes liberals want to take what I've worked for and give it to somebody with no ambition to work.

If you think I'm rich I'm not. I'm simply a working stiff trying to make ends meet.

If liberals have such a great solution to our nations problems - war, economy, unemployment, then why aren't they sharing them? As a voter I'd love to hear how they are going to fix things rather than hear them complain about what is wrong.

Average Joe,
Really? then how do you explain Halliburton, Blackwater and all of those no bid contacts?

Keep on voting against your own self-interests and you get what you vote for, bozo.

I love Bush and feel sorry for all the right-wing liberals posting here and around the U.S. The economy has been fantastic over the last 4 years. The only thing that keeps Bush's approval rating down is that nobody is upset about 9/11 anymore so everyone hates the war. The bottom line is why would you want freedom for yourself, but not for your fellow man...oh how we have become so selfish.

Only liars can grow up to become a politician. While the king of liars, yeah the president.

Unfortunately, the President will not comment on Israel's aggressions into Syrian airspace. Once again the zionists are allowed to flaunt international law and the U.S., controlled by the Israeli cabal and influence arising from zionist money to fund political campaigns, does nothing. And we shake our heads and wonder why the rest of the world hates us! It isn't envy my fellow Americans, not by a long shot.

Bush must have failed alphabet class also... How does a C- = B? The man's a retard...

i cannot wait for him to be gone. he is the worst president we have ever had.

"The brain dead roadkill on the Left that populates this blog and others like the Huffington Post and DailyKooks can't even get jobs!"

So are you insinuating that because people on the left respond in the middle of the work day? If you are, then I guess your employment skills a lacking as well!

Bush is a moron, and only a moron would support him!

Alex, you are spot on! I wonder how long it will be until the Israelis try to bomb Iran (probably about the same time Iran gets close to a nuke) and then what war the US will get sucked into. Remember, when the rich wage war it's the poor who die. How many Palestinians do you think the Israelis killed today b/c some poverty-addled 12 year old threw a stone a tank; that would be an M-1 Abrams Battle Tank, made right here in the USofA and shipped free of charge to Israel who receives the largest foreign aid of ANY country from the US (they really need it, honest ;-))))). As 'Read a Book' wrote in broken English, if you don't know who you're voting for and what policies they support, you have only yourself to blame.

I have said from the beginning that George "dumb" Bush is the worst president that has ever governed this country. Not only is he a pathological liar, but low life chaney is also a liar. I often wonder what the bible means when it says "we should pray for our leaders." Yes, I believe in praying for leaders not liars.

And apparently he got in F in public relations, and aren't his economic policies the same his daddy called vodoo economics? Anybody remember the Swift Boat attacks General Betray Us? I learned that changing my story to suit my purpose doesn't work once you graduate from elementary school.

Clarification on Mr. Greenspan's sentiments, as posted by Master of (Twisted)Reality:

"...But he expresses deep disappointment with Bush. "My biggest frustration remained the president's unwillingness to wield his veto against out-of-control spending," Greenspan writes.

Greenspan accuses the Republicans who presided over the party's majority in the House until last year of being too eager to tolerate excessive federal spending in exchange for political opportunity. The Republicans, he says, deserved to lose control of the Senate and House in last year's elections."

I saw Mr. Greenspan on TV two days ago, in a (lengthy)Neil Cavuto interview. Greenspan indicated that he very much likes BOTH presidents Bush, and that our current president should have vetoed spending that was in excess of what the President himself though reasonable.

Greenspan indicated a disagreement with some spending decisions of the Republican House, as opposed to disagreement with the President. In stating that the President should have vetoed more, Greenspan basically explained that the President should have stuck harder to his own guns more often, in essence. In this TV interview, Mr. Greenspan seemed to clarify that the previous Republican House lost its way--not so much the President himself.

On Greenspan's statement: "The Republicans in Congress lost their way...They swapped principle for power. They ended up with neither." -
Greenspan responded, when asked about the current Democrat Congress, that they have done and are doing the SAME--losing their way and swapping principle for power.

More proof that just about anything can and will be taken out of context to slam our President. Many of us need to speak up and stop allowing so many ignorant libs to blame everything including their warts and hangnails on a President LOTS OF US support. Throwing stones is just so much easier than having ACTUAL, REALISTIC, IDEAS, isn't it??

Bush likes to credit his tax cuts for the economy but his open-checkbook approach to government spending was more likely to spur the economy than his tax cuts. Is there any capital (money, human, political) that this guy hasn't fully spent? He's the most reckless president in history.

Amen, brother. Well said. I've said it many times: give a Democrat $3+ trillion to throw at the economy in the form of corporate welfare, budget-busting tax cuts and a huge expensive war of choice and the economy would be absolutely soaring. Of course, it would then be the Republicans telling us how badly the economy was doing. How ironic.

"The bottom line is why would you want freedom for yourself, but not for your fellow man...oh how we have become so selfish."
Posted by: Bush Lover | September 20, 2007 4:21 PM

How about this, I'll believe your high fallutin' rhetoric about freedom and democracy for the rest of the world and such when your president stops threatening to veto legislation to give a Congressional vote to the District of Columbia where I live.

You guys can bring democracy here without firing a gun or anything. But no, sir. Only 7 courageous GOP Senators voted for DC Voting Rights even though Utah was poised to receive an extra seat to offset the gain of a Democratic seat in the District.

If DC can be taxed as a "State" (16th Amendment refers to the "several States") and our gun bans can be overturned because of the 2nd Amendment which reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a FREE STATE," then surely the people of the nation's capitol deserve 1 vote in the United States Congress.

Wow, what is so bad about a federalization of health care? It would be such a shame to ensure that the people who need it would receive healt care. I can't imagine a more awful future. Gosh, I wonder what would happen if we federalized education as well? Would our students, God Forbid, learn? Hmmm, makes me think...

Lori - Let me guess. You live in either DuPage County or someplace either in, or around, Schaumburg. Correct?

Right, and an F- in war prevention and planning.

The problem with blaming one person (Bush), is that the people who do that think one person(some democrat) is going to save us all.

The problems we face in Iraq,at home, and globally are fairly complex, and require all of us to change the way we think.

We all need to get smart about environmental problems (energy waste and pollution), out of control reproduction rates (mostly in other countries), immigration without a plan, human trafficking, human rights abuses, internet cults and terror groups, corruption, healthcare racketeering, and security issues.

Most of these things I mention do not even make the news, but they are the root causes of all of our other problems!!

So let's stop struggling and being wasteful all of the time, and deal with our problems intelligently.

We have so much, who is making things so difficult??
I do not think the answer to that is one person (Bush).

Presdient Bush could have said we are in a malaize.

Speaking of morons:

Keeping taxes low?! I'm at 35% federal, and that's just on what I EARN. Not including Social Security, etc., or the taxes on the money I spend. If you're reading this, George, you can kiss my a**.

Republicans for Voldemort

One reason South Africa DOES have a Mandela is that the US did not invade our sovereign territory and damage our country, lay waste our infrastructure and decimate our population directly or via the overthrow of civil law and order. We were given a chance to change our oppressive regime ourselves, and in the least damaging way. Thank God we had no oil to tempt the likes of B-Bush!

Every once in a while, George Bush holds a press conference and unwittingly reveals in public why this is the most secretive White House in history: they have a very dangerous secret that can't really be kept a secret - the Commander-in-Chief is a blithering idiot! It will take this country about a century to live down the shame of this administration.

Greenspan said that no government could survive if they tax their citizens more than 30%. At this point, when you add up Federal income taxes, State and City taxes, add in liquor, cigarrette and gasoline taxes, as well as the taxes on your phone bill, licencing fees, and don't forget the penalties for not paying your taxes on time, we are paying somewhere between 60-70% of our income in taxes. Greenspan warned of this. Nobody listened and now we can all have a cushy life of tax-breaks and pass the bill to our kids. Thanks, Mr. C- in economics.

I read Bush's remarks as "an aggressive effort to enroll millions of poor children who are eligible but not signed up for government health insurance programs" as a commitment to "enroll" poor children that are eligible, not a 2004 commitment to "increase" eligibility foor porr children. Maybe I missed something. That said, I am not opposed to increasing eligility!

Chad,

Congrats on being at 35% federal tax level and I agree, its too high. However, give the President Credit forlowering that top tax rate from 39.6% to 35% along with lowering all other tax rates for ALL income tax payers.

I agree, the highest level s/b 25%.

After this last speech, I’m convinced:
History will teach our kids that G.W. Bush was the worst president we ever had, damaging every single sector and the Americans' image during his two! periods.

Unfortunately, the powerful Bush family has more cards to play, and who knows, maybe Americans will be voting for another Bush in a few years… are you?

When Bush's presidency comes to an end will the history books have ANYTHING good to write about this man? Has this man accomplished anything for this country that is for our betterment? All I see is a trail of debris.

"Lori - Let me guess. You live in either DuPage County or someplace either in, or around, Schaumburg. Correct?"

I guess "Master of Twisted Reality" believes that only well-to-do folks support a conservative ideology. I live in a lower middle-class Southern Suburb, and work two jobs to pay for a VERY modest house. I had the sense to work hard and save a bit at a time so I could eventually buy a home for my children--a 30 yr-fixed loan, not one of those pie-in-the-sky interest-only bum deals that are coming back to bite the current mortgage and housing industries.

I exist financially on good sense, telling my kids "NO" once in a while, and I teach my children them that careful spending, hard work, integrity and education are the keys to success--not buying into expecting better-educated, successful businesses and executives to pay exhorbitant tax rates so I can sit on my but with my hand out.

Sir, there are a lot of us who were raised with that philosophy. We know that to cripple corporations with excessive taxes reduces their incentive to develop new products and methods--and thus their need to hire the rest of us. Employment has been lingering at over 95% partially due to tax cuts to those you would think of rich. Anyone who works only 40 hours, pays their bills, invests, and vacations once in a while is rich to me! With the exception of a small minority, these people deserve what they have--they put ideas into action, RISKED a lot, and have been rewarded for succeeding against the odds. Economists generally consider 95% employment to be FULL employment, because basically everyone who WANTS to work is working.

One proven fact:

BUSH = LIAR

Therefore:

IF BUSH SAYS: "ECONOMY IS FINE."
THEN TRUTH: "IT IS COLLAPSING."

Everything this man says is simply CORPORATE PROPAGANDA. His various "Corporate Friends" (Party-Backing Financiers), especially the "Carlyle Group" will profit immensely off the coming collapse of the US ECONOMY.

Bush with his "B" in economics may or may not understand fully what's going on. Likely, he's only, as usual, just doing more favours for his rich buddies.

Research more on the "Carlyle Group" to uncover more on this corruption and proof of the lies.

“There is no question that there is some unsettling times in the housing market."

Yes, there certainly is some unsettling times...

Bush also obviously got an F in english...
