House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she spoke with President Bush today about the children's health care bill which he vows to veto -- the bill that passed the Senate this week by 67-29 and the House by 265-159, and which House and Senate leaders enrolled today.

"I told him he was in my prayers,'' Pelosi (D-Calif.) said of the president.

But the children's health care bill apparently has no prayer at the White House, where the president announced in no uncertain terms two weeks ago and his office has reiterated several times since then that he will veto a measure that he considers "federalization'' of health care.

The bill expands the eligibility of those covered by the State Children's Health Insurance Program from families earning up to twice the federal poverty level to those earning up to three times the poverty level -- about $62,000 for a family of four. It could cost an additional $35 billion over five years, financed by an increase in the federal cigarette tax.

"We won by 106 votes,'' Pelosi notes of a bill that has attracted significant Republican support.

Supporters hope that they can place pressure on the president to reconsider blocking a bill that stands to benefit an additional 3.8 million children, with 6.6 million already served. The additional cost, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says, amounts to 45 days of the war in Iraq.

In her talk with the president, Pelosi said, she called on him to reconsider his veto threat and asked him: "Is he prepared to be the decider as to which children have (insurance) and which do not?''

This is what Bush told Pelosi: "He said, 'I like people who don’t give up.'''

"I said, I know,'' Pelosi said.

Bush appreciated the call, according to White House Press Secretary Dana Perino, but "the president has been very clear for months that if the bill came to him in its current form, that he would veto it. That is his intention. And I don't see any changing of the minds there.''

I find it interesting that Bush will veto a bill to insure American children while he's sending billions of our tax dollars to help Iraqi children.

Also, daughter Jenna will be on TV tonight touting her interest in helping Jamaican children.

So, I guess the bottom line is the Bush family has compassion, just not for American children.

WHat a godless subhuman that chimp in the white house is. He and the 30% of losers who still "support" the troglodyte.

From the same people who want $190 billion dollars to drag the Iraq disaster out endlessly. $3 billion to escalate the recruitment of potential casualties for the US military. Obviously, we need to examine and rescind the powers of the office of the US President. Bush is the most immature, childish, petty little dictator Napoleon. We ALL know what needs to be done with him AND Cheney.

Yay children don't have to sit in large classrooms next to poor kids who are sick and can't afford to be treated. Yay for common sense.

Baby food should be free also. All babies need to eat and nobody pays for a crop to grow. I mean, who do the farmers pay, God? They put seeds in the ground and food grows. After all IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN.

Let Bush veto the bill - then find a republican to campaign for.

BUSH SHOCKS AMERICA AND SIGNS HEALTHCARE BILL, WANTS SOMETHING TO ADD TO HIS LEGACY.

George Bush is hearing the voices this morning. THOU YOU WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF DEATH, I WILL FEAR NO EVIL FOR OUT THOU NOT WITH YOU on this. He just can't see american children not being left behind. It is not in the pharmaceutical ways and means of controlling the common cold. NO COUGH MEDICINE FOR YOU.

SO 67 OBVIOUS THE MAJORITY IS NOT THE MAJORITY IN BUSH CAMP. 69 OR EVEN 70 OTHERWISE HE USES EXECUTIVE ORDER DICK CHENEY AND SAYS

YEA RIGHT CHILDREN!

ARCHIVES WON'T LIE!

The childrens need help.

whatnow,

Your compassion is touching.

Why, it's almost as if you mean it.

The Republican motto continues to be: I've got mine & f u.

After all, if you don't want to be poor why did you decide to be born into the family you were?

Of all the bills for Bush to veto, why does it have to be this one? His rational for the stem cell veto was laughable, but I understood why he did it (to pacify the religous wrong.)

This bill though? Why? Didn't he say in 2004 that he wanted this?

Once again the Republicans show that the crocodile tears they shed for the unborn doesn't lead to compassion for actual children.

Republicans would rather put a child in the hospital or the morgue than take a few dollars from their pocket or from all that lovely glorious death and destruction in Iraq.

"Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in;naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? ‘And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? ‘When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You? The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’
Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Matthew 25 34-46

The article notes that the program would be paid for with an increase in cigarette taxes. Remind me, what's Bush's plan for paying for Iraq war? Perhaps someone in the Washington press corps could ask him that question next time they get a chance.

Why do Republicans hate our children?
Why do I hate myself for who I really am?

paid for with an increase in cigarette taxes ...while there is a push for a movement to quite smoking because of its long research history tied to a vast array of health problems at the same time ...by the same type of people pushing for this health bill

i see lots of funding available for this plan in the near future at his rate if this is in fact the case

Billions and billions
From the QT Archive of Knowledge:

• • We have more mercenaries than American soldiers in Iraq.

• • The occupation of Iraq is now costing $8,000 a second.

How many lives could be saved with $8,000.00 a second?

The funniest thing about all these comments is this: I am willing to bet that NONE of the above people would be willing to give up their plasma tv, car, house, food, beer, clothing or smokes for the child of a stranger. Christ said "whatever YOU did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me". (emphasis added)
Taxes are not giving, they are taxes. Christ like love and giving comes from YOUR heart, not from a strangers 1040 form.

I don't get it. If you want people to quit smoking and children to have health care, why base the health care on people continuing smoking?

"The funniest thing about all these comments is this: I am willing to bet that NONE of the above people would be willing to give up their plasma tv, car, house, food, beer, clothing or smokes for the child of a stranger."

Thankfully you are wrong. There are a great many people in this world who do tangibly care about and for the children of strangers. Not all people are as greedy and selfish as say. Many people give willingly. Many people don't have a problem with some of their wealth going to help other through thier taxes.

You may prioritize those things above the needs of a child, but many do not.

Only 113 more days left in the Bush regime.

Then that heartless #@%&!* can burn in Hell.

"NONE of the above people would be willing to give up their plasma tv"

I don't have a plasma tv yet, but I've donated many times the cost of one to help children and struggling families. Of course, I can't speak for the "above people". And I want MY 1040 form to reflect support, not just yours.

Now I have to point out that most of the politicians pushing for a long war avoided Vietnam and won't encourage their kids join the military. Cheney, for example, had better things to do.

Well here we go again 'Hiding Behind the Children' to push on the American people more expense that we have no hope of paying for!

Enough with the public relations games.

I say we make a new social contract. Lets not make the kids pay!

What is the plan for the trillions of unfunded Social Security promises? Make the kids pay!

What is the plan for the billions of Iraq war expense? Make the kids pay!

What is the plan for the current trillions of unfunded Medicare expense? Make the kids pay!

Before we start making more promises to our kids that we no hope of funding lets do something, ANYTHING, about the current promises to the last generation of kids who are now paying!

Please no more pretty pictures and wondeful speachs about how the next 50 billion in debt is going to change the world. Looks like the some world to me - just more debt for the next generation of kids to fund!

"I don't get it. If you want people to quit smoking and children to have health care, why base the health care on people continuing smoking?"

Ummm, right. And cities shouldn't count on any money from traffic violations, as we don't want people to break the law.

Maybe it is because we are realists. And a HUGE chunk of the Republican party went against W on this, even with the threat of a veto. The time will come when he has no veto power. Yippee!

I would be the last person to deny children healthcare or any other necessity, but, if you bleeding heart liberals had bothered to read the article you'd know that the SCHIP program already covers families earning twice the poverty level of income. Now Congress wants to raise the level to 3 times the poverty level. Thats $62,000 per year for a family of four!! How much coverage is enough for you people. I am a Christian conservative and quoting Matthew 25 does not apply in this case, however, it would apply for Iraqi children. I am also Republican and I DO think the President has messed up big time on some other issues, but, this is not one of them.

3:27 i have no problem paying taxes ......but your looking to tax smokers and pushing for bans like NY and NJ has ...including looking to offer free assistance programs and products to quite at the same time...i don't think that in the long run taxes on those camels or marlboros will be a dependable source to fund the program with...

i get that by taxing a carcinogenic and cardiovascular and respiratory disease causing product you are causing more people to quite bc they can't afford the habit (good thing)...and your also banning it in public places (good thing) ...and offering products and services to get people to quit (good thing)... well a couple of years down the line ...as America has begun embracing not only an environmentally consciouses but a health conscientious movement i don't see this as a dependable source of income in the bill

At least have the guts to post a name--any name--to your pathetic post.

It's so easy to pontificate without really knowing what people would do. But that's too easy. After all, what was it that Christ said about Judge not?

I'll weigh in on this when enough of you re-enter the stratosphere. Right now, most of you are thinking with something other than your brains.

Brains: they're not just for breakfast anymore.

Question to the anon poster about Mat: 25... here's my question. SCHIPS already covers a family making 80,000 a year if they have 8 children. This new bill expands that same coverage. So is 80 grand a year poverty? The good book also says that the Lord Helps Those Who Help Themselves. If you're making 80 grand, you can afford to help yourself.

But the children's health care bill apparently has no prayer at the White House, where the president announced in no uncertain terms two weeks ago and his office has reiterated several times since then that he will veto a measure that he considers "federalization'' of health care.

So then why doesn't he just dismantle the whole program if it's so against his principles? He's drawing the line here, on the expansion of a successful program? Why? Because not vetoing it might in effect be acknowledging that healthcare costs are really hurting the middle class and there's something to all this talk about universal healthcare?

Let's play the GOP game -- Why does Bush hate children so much?

To come completely out of left field here...

Can we afford this? Sorry- I know thats crazy...

Or maybe a different thought as long as we are all lining up to write checks- since the congress is really helping the children (bless their hearts) lets ask every congress person who voted yes to this- to tally up all of the earmarks they have lined up for this budget- and reallocate the money to this urgent matter of providing health care to children..

they are playing us all- they don't care about children, health care or anything except the next election.

"SCHIPS already covers a family making 80,000 a year if they have 8 children. This new bill expands that same coverage. So is 80 grand a year poverty?"

Well, I think it would probably pretty darn tough for a family with that income to pay for health insurance for 10 people all on their own, don't you? Should the children be the ones to suffer in that case?

"The good book also says that the Lord Helps Those Who Help Themselves."

Actually the Bible says no such thing. The quote originates with Ben Franklin.

“So, I guess the bottom line is the Bush family has compassion, just not for American children.”

C’mon now. The federal government is spending 600 billion a year on those below the poverty line, so yeah, let’s just do the same for those making 3 times that. We now have a record 28% of people already on government health insurance. All citizens are covered, by law, in the case of emergency.

This has nothing to do with compassion, and nothing to do with Iraq. It’s just a matter of what you believe the role of the federal government to be, and what you believe is the best way to motivate people to get their act together…and if you are making 3 times the poverty level and can’t afford some basic health insurance for your children, then you don’t have your act together.

If you believe that socialized medicine is the way to go, then fine, but don’t wrap it in the pathetic “hate children” argument. Since wealthy people like Pelosi are not getting their checkbooks out to pay for this, I guess they hate children, also.

I'd like to point out that this is a BIPARTISAN bill. The kinds of majorities racked up in both houses for this bill don't come only from Democrats.

The headline is inaccurate.

While I concede the Bible quote since it's earliest reference is not Ben Franklin but it actually is found much earlier with Aesop in 500BC... however; there is some truth to the saying in that:

"As a specific example, if you are in need of a job, ask the Lord to help you find a job - but then be active in actually looking for a job. While it is in His power to do so, it is highly unlikely that God will cause employers to come looking for you!"

www.gotquestions.org/God-help-themselves.html

Now that this is out of the way, you miss the point. The point being that while 80 grand may not be much to live off of in NYC with 8 children it is more then enough to live off of in WVA. And most employers off you insurance not on a PER CHILD basis but as YOURSELF, YOURSELF and SPOUSE, YOU AND FAMILY, and YOU and CHILD. Not, YOU and CHILD 1 + 2 + 3 + 4.. so the argument that Health Insurance costs for someone making 80 grand a year EVERYWHERE in the US with up to 8 children is a moot issue. Target the program to those that need it, not everyone else you want to have addicted to the Federal Money Drug in order to buy more votes.

Nancy Pelosi is praying for Bush to sign the tax and spend socialized medicine give away to children who's parents make $82,000 a year. Yeah right her Dad was in the Outfit when he was Mayor of Baltimore--her prayers wouldn't count for much.
The leftist Dems in Congress want to make government bigger and bigger and bigger. They need Americans to depend on government. Free health care is not free it is confiscation of tax money from your friends and neighbors. Just like Hil's idea of $5,000 for every child born in America it's pie in the sky what excuse do you have to take and raise my taxes.
Dem liberals want to raise taxes so they use any excuse global warming, CO 2 offsets say what.
Americans unite don't let these modern day Robinhoods steal more tax money in the name of health care, the children, the environment. The Dems slay me they are thieves in the name of compassion. The Dem frontrunners are all multi-millionaires who want to help the little guy and working families etc. Stop the con it is raising taxes and making government bigger for more liberals to run it. In 08 the GOP will win because Americans in fly over country have figured out the quickest way to breakup a crowd is to pass the hat. How about just reach in everyones pocketbook and say honestly. Stickem up I'm a Democrat. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

"I am willing to bet that NONE of the above people would be willing to give up their:

"plasma tv"
-- I don't own one, so this is a non-issue.

"car"
-- There is no public transportation from my house to anywhere near my employer. Can't give it up unless I want to spend weeks or months unemployed while I look for a job closer to home.

"house"
-- Sure. To make Republicans like you happy I'll live in a tent down in Grant Park. You'll make sure that the CPD don't hassle me for violating vagrancy laws, okay?

"food"
-- Now you're just being a jerk.

"beer"
-- I have 2 beers a week during the Bears games. I can give them up anytime.

"clothing"
-- I have been donating clothing to charity for over 25 years.

"smokes"
-- Another non-issue. I don't smoke, but I'm curious as to why you're asking people to give cigarettes to children? Isn't that against the law?

"Christ like love and giving comes from YOUR heart, not from a strangers 1040 form."
-- Jesus said in The Bible: "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's, give unto God what is God's."

This IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE!!!
