Gov. Mike Huckabee's increasingly hawkish view on immigration is drawing the ire of immigration advocates who criticize the Republican presidential candidate for going from a relatively humane position on dealing with illegal immigrants to a get-tough approach that would give the undocumented four months to exit the U.S., period.
Huckabee recently introduced his "Secure America" plan which includes a proposal that, if enacted, would require the estimated 12 million to 20 million illegal immigrants in the country to immediately register with the Customs and Immigration Enforcement agency, then give them 120 days to voluntarily leave the country. His plan suggests this approach is the only way to prevent an amnesty.
Those who failed to leave would be face deportation if arrested and would be barred from re-entering the U.S. for 10 years. The dislocation the sudden "voluntary' exit of 12 million to 20 million people would cause to communities across the U.S. isn't dealt with in Huckabee's proposal.
The position is clearly an attempt by Huckabee to accomplish two things. The mood is such in much of the nation, particularly among many Republicans who will vote in the Iowa caucuses and early primaries, to crack down on illegal immigration, and Huckabee is trying to synchronize his view with those voters.
But Huckabee is also trying to neutralize his past. As Arkansas's governor, Huckabee supported in-state college tuition for young illegal immigrants. This has left him vulnerable to attacks from his Republican opponents, particularly former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to whom Huckabee poses the largest threat in Iowa.
So Huckabee is attempting to beat back the Romney and others competing for the GOP nomination. To do so, he is now taking a hard line. But as Clarissa Martinez, the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform campaign manager points out in a statement, that is causing some cognitive dissonance with some of Huckabee's earlier statements. Here's a statement Martinez issued:
Just a couple of weeks ago Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee had what appeared to be a shining moment of strength and leadership on the issue of immigration when he refused to take Mitt Romneyâs bait, instead declaring: "In all due respect, we are a better country than to punish children for what their parents did."Well, we admit it, we were fooled. It certainly seemed as though Governor Huckabee was going to do the right thing focusing on solutions and refraining from the immigration pile-on being waged by his competitors. Boy, were we wrong!
What a Difference a Week Makes
In a stunning reversal from the compassion and leadership he showed just two weeks ago, Governor Huckabee has now released his 9-point Immigration Strategy, which among other things, calls for the 12 million undocumented immigrants in the country to leave within 120 days. This week Huckabee also announced he will begin airing a new TV spot focused on immigration and intended to echo the hard line rhetoric of his rivals.
His new plan makes no mention of those children or being a âbetter countryâ anywhere in his demand for mass expulsion. Even more interesting is that despite his claim that he supports legal immigrationâand is only interested in ending illegal immigrationâGovernor Huckabee openly admits he got his 9-point immigration plan in large part from the Center for Immigration Studies, a restrictionist group that wants to stop all immigration, legal and illegal.
Regardless of where you stand on the immigration issue, it is certainly an amazing turn of events that a candidate running for presidentâfrom any partyâwould advocate for the mass expulsion of 12 million people and 5 percent of Americaâs workforce. And that at a time when a majority of Americans believe it is impractical , undesirable or un-American to do such a thingâGovernor Huckabee is proposing such an idea and asking people to deport themselves. Perhaps even more amazing is that such a proposal could be taken seriously and that it would go virtually unnoticed by the national press for what it truly is: a reckless, desperate and irresponsible policy.
Huckabee Chooses Fear Over Faith
The Huckabee immigration flip-flop comes on the heels of national and early primary state polls that show him surging ahead of his competitors in Iowaâand climbing to second place nationallyâcoming out of the very CNN debate where he showed such promise and leadership on the immigration issue.
A Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll (11/30-12/03) shows Huckabee at 17 percent, just 6 percentage points behind the long-time frontrunner Rudy Giuliani. USA Today/Gallup (11/30-12/02) found similar results with Huckabee at 16 percent nationally. The new AP/Ipsos poll (12/03-12/05) shows Huckabee at 18 percent, up from 10 percent in an AP-Ipsos survey a month ago and 3 percent in July. And a new Rasmussen poll (12/02-12/05) has Huckabee leading the pack at 22 percent with Giuliani running a close second at 18 percent.
The recent polling coming out of Iowaâa state where immigration is a salient issueâis even more dramatic. The new Newsweek poll (12/05-12/06) released last week shows Huckabee way out in front of his competitors in Iowa with a 22 percentage point lead over Mitt Romney.
Every single one of these polls was taken after Huckabeeâs compassionate plea for sanity on the immigration issue and before the release of his tough sounding 9-point plan on immigration. Huckabee had defied the âconventional wisdomâ and showed true leadership and compassion on the immigration issue without suffering at the polls.
Earlier this year Governor Huckabee said the following in an interview with Real Clear Politics:âThe single most important issue is restoring America's faith in itself. This country is at its best when it's optimistic and resilient and when it sees that its greatest days are ahead of it, not behind it. We are at our worst when we tend to get filled with fear and anxiety. Fear is a motivator that will motivate people for the short term, but hope is what motivates people for the long termâ¦We don't need to be thinking that way, and that requires leadership.â
Itâs unfortunate that a politician with the potential to lead on this issue would buckle to the pressure of misguided short-term political gain over the long-term good of the country. Ironic that the polls seem to indicate he didnât have to. Governor Huckabee didnât have enough faith in his own leadership to follow his own advice about choosing optimism and resiliency over fear and anxiety.
Shame on you Governor Huckabee.

Throw out all illegal immigrants? Even conservatives fear that.
Imagine how much more the cost of lanscaping would be if you had to suddenly pay workers a minimum wage.
It would go over as well as a tax hike.

Huckabee's proposal reflects his propensity to take extremist, uncompromising views. His revelations about isolating aids victims, allowing everybody to carry guns, eliminating all taxes are examples of shoot from the hips extreme views that identify this man as someone to avoid like the plaque itself. Couple that with his religious fanaticism would make him far too dangerous to hold the reins of power in this country or anywhere else. I would recommend that he retreat to a nice little white church with a steeple, and a white picket fence around it. There he can preach to his hearts content his faithful flock of sheep and lead them all to heaven. But leave the rest of us alone.

Huckabee= stupid plan = more rhetoric
what happens if they don't sign up and refuse to leave? We can't deport 20 million illegals.
What we need is a fence from the pacific to the Gulf, and make Social Security numbers instantly verifyable, just like Visa and Mastercard. If the number and last name don't match, no job or school, or social services ... and zip! They deport themselves back to country of origin.

This makes me smile,
People have selective hearing. Mike has not changed his position on immigaration. He has said from the beginning of his campaign, build the fence, no amnesty, no sanctuary cities.
Individuals selectively chose to home in on Mike's desire not to punish children for the sins of their parents as a sign of weakness. He's pro-all life, especially when it comes to childrens rights.
If he is a man of his word, (and i believe he can get the results) entire families will be able to register, go home, fill out the paperwork and be back in a SHORT time as LEGAL immigrants contributing to our society. He is on the record as hoping this could be in as little as a month.
Mike is, and has always been on the tough but compassionate and pragmatic side of this argument.
Immigration 'allies' looking for amnesty talk from him were never going to get it, regardless of the talk peddled by rival campaigns.
So shame on YOU for not having done your own homework, and for not realizing that Mike's propsed reformation of the LEGAL immigration process is your last best hope to get it straight.
Ps. If an illegal is caught and deported now, they are already 'baned' from re-entry for ten years...nothing new about that!

I am hard pressed to concieve of any negatives to our nation (as a whole) if illegal aliens were to self deport. Overpopulation, congestion, crime, pollution, urban sprawl, failing schools, affordable health care, affordable housing, taxes, depressed wages, vanishing farm land and green space, quality of life, all have been negatively impacted by unconstrained immigration. More people chasing fewer resources cannot be considered responsible economic or social policy. Certainly there will be costs and consequences with securing our borders and enforcing our immigration laws, but most American's accept these costs and consequences. Sure there will be fewer "cheap labor workers" to exploit, but competing for available workers is what created the "quality of life" we enjoy as Americans. Employers competing for the same, albeit limited labor resources will not face competition from those who exploit illegals for the wage and cost advantage they offer. Fewer workers means fewer people to house, feed, clothe. Fewer cars means less pollution, less drain on diminishing resources. There can be no negative effects on our economy because of the "worker shortage hysteria" asserted by employers who enjoy the benefits of not having to compete for workers. Given the enormous numbers of workers waiting to enter our nation legally, this argument is nonsense. Add the fact that employers will again be constrained to compete for, and retain the workers they need, and the prospects of earning a living wage will again see "jobs that nobody wants" filled by American workers. Indeed, the only argument to be made against American sovereignty and securing our borders will be made by those with a pro-illegal agenda, and those who benefit from a tax payer funded "low cost alternative" to hiring American workers. The savings in tax dollars and social services will far exceed in nagatives impact on our economy.

It is not the opposition to illegal immigration that matters. Many people with good intentions oppose illegal immigration such as Jim Webb and Clair McCaskill. It is his alliance with racist groups such as the Center for Immigration Studies that is worrisome.
Posted by: George Chell | December 11, 2007 11:33 AM
He also said that it if it takes a minute to get an American express credit card, it should also take days or weeks to get a legal worker permit. He wants the illegal worker to have the opportunity to work with their heads held high and not in hiding. You will be able to work for the minimum wage and not for any less.
Thank You

The opponents of Mike Huckabee are attempting to make the case for inconsistencies of the kind that have been attributed to Gov. Romney. However, they fail to make the distinction between changes in positions that result from new information over time versus flip-flops on positions held on principle. There are many more illegal immigrants now than there were when Huckabee supported tuition breaks for children of illegals in the past. Similarly, we know more about the transmission of AIDS now than 15 years when he proposed a quarantine. By contrast, changes on positions (such as abortion) that are not due to new information are of a different and more troubling nature. If details of Huckabee's position on immigration are arguable, at least he has the courage to have taken one.

Shame on Huckabee?
I'm afraid this article omitted Governor Huckabee's assertion that our legal immigration process is an antiquated, broken mess and that he intends to replace it with a fast-track process that would reduce the time it takes to legally immigrate from years down to weeks or months.
The immigration issue has to start with securing the border, to which most voters and candidates agree. What is done with the 10-15 million undocumented visitors that are already here will require a thoughtful and compassionate solution that is also fair to those who immigrated to the US legally under the current system. Streamlining the re-entry process is the best answer to this issue since an orderly but expeditous retooling is needed anyway.
I see the immigration plan that Governor Huckabee has adopted as a two-pronged policy that addresses what is fast becoming a crisis in a clear-cut but compassionate manner. It is the expedited re-entry piece of Huckabee's plan that distiguishes it from the monolithic prior proposals like the one that failed in congress earlier this year and the cold "slam the door shut" proposals some immigration hawks are floating.
Huckabee is advocating a plan which stops the problem from growing, puts in place a firm but reasonable and compassionate means of re-entry for those who wish to become American citizens and also respects the long and difficult road that those who immigrated under the present system were subject to.
I see this as a well-balanced solution that is as fair as possible under circumstances that were allowed to evolve over decades by the inaction of career Washington politicians of BOTH parties.

DEMS HOLD FIRE ON HUCKABEE; SEE 'EASY KILL' IN GENERAL ELECTION
Tue Dec 11 2007 10:27:53 ET
**Exclusive**
Democrat party officials are avoiding any and all criticism of Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, insiders reveal.
The Democratic National Committee has told staffers to hold all fire, until he secures the party's nomination.
The directive has come down from the highest levels within the party, according to a top source.
Within the DNC, Huckabee is known as the "glass jaw -- and they're just waiting to break it."
In the last three weeks since Huckabee's surge kicked in, the DNC hasn't released a single press release criticizing his rising candidacy.
The last DNC press release critical of Huckabee appeared back on March 2nd.
[DNC Press Release Attack Summary:
Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) 37% (99 press releases)
Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY) 28% (74)
Senator John McCain (R-AZ) 24% (64)
Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) 8% (20)
Governor Mike Huckabee 2% (4)]
In fact, as the story broke over the weekend that Huckabee said he wanted to isolate AIDS patients back in 1992, the DNC ignored the opportunity to slam the candidate from the left.
"He'll easily be their McGovern, an easy kill," mocked one senior Democrat operative Tuesday morning from Washington.
"His letting out murderers because they shout 'Jesus', his wanting to put 300,000 AIDS patients and Magic Johnson into isolation, ain't even scratching the surface of what we've got on him."
The discipline the Democrats have shown in not engaging Huckabee has earned the praise of one former Republican Party official:
"The Democrats are doing a much better job restraining themselves than the GOP did in 2003 when Howard Dean looked like he was on the brink of winning the nomination."
A close friend to Huckabee explains: "Look, Mike is Hillary Clinton's worst nightmare. They should be squirming."

The estimated profit to U.S. corporations and businesses employing illegal aliens in 2005 which was more than $2.36 TRILLION dollars; The cost of immigration to the American taxpayer in 1997 was a NET (after subtracting taxes immigrants pay) $70 BILLION a year, [Professor Donald Huddle, Rice University]; the cost is MANY TIMES GREATER now in 2006! In 2006 the average cost of each Illegal Alien here is $11,000.00 per year for American Taxpayers!
American citizen population who are fed up with paying the tab for pariah employers. The annual cost to taxpayers is about $22 + billion a year according to Center for Immigration Studies and the tax burden will grow -- because 15 million more immigrants are set to arrive by year 2017 according to their latest research. More than 10 million immigrants have arrived since year 2000; it is estimated that nearly 6 million are illegal. All told, the group of immigrants now account for 38 million at the moment according to the White House's own census bureau. The "SAVE ACT" that can alleviate much of the frustration and anger of the American citizen. Using of penalties from predator employers of heavy fines and confiscation of business profits, would pay exceedingly well for internal enforcement?

Mike Huckabee is doing the right thing. He has not changed views. You only wish to see what you want to see in his views. At a governors level Mike had to do the best he could with the influx of immigrants into his state without punishing the kids. He gave the kids the opportunity to be productive citizens instead of a burden on tax payers. This was pushed upon him because of the failure of our federal government to enforce the immigration laws from the start. Mike as president is now trying to fix this problem from a national level perspective. At the national level he now has to fix the immigration problem and restore us back to the rule of law and make a safe as well as a immigrant friendly nation. The choices he has is to either give amnesty to the current influx of immigrants which no one wants or just enforce the existing laws which at this point would be very mean spirited, expensive and impractical. Mikes plan is to secure the borders, enforce the laws on the employers, make it less attractive for illegal immigrants to want to come here illegally. Changing to the fairtax will also discourage illegal immigration. Instead of trying to deport 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants, have the current illegal immigrants return themselves back to there home of orgin. Maybe some wont go willingly but I bet a good many will. With a more efficient and expedited visa and immigration system immigrants can obtain the American dream without having to wait ten years. Anyway you slice this issue there is going to be some pain involved. If our government had simply enforced our current laws from the beginning this would be a non issue.

In all due respect, when Mike states "We do not punish the children for the crimes of their parents" That makes me think "But we punish Americans for the crimes of ILLEGAL ALIEN parents" The AMERICAN TAX-PAYERS will pay for the ILLEGAL ALIEN CHILDREN. Illegal aliens are not entitled to Tax-payer benefits. This Country has the right to know who is here. When a Legal immigrant comes to this country "I welcome them with open arms."
As a Californian, I have seen the devastating effects of "ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION" Beware, it is coming to your neighborhood soon.

Conservatives always take property and taxes over human dignity and life. To them, this is about cleaning house. The feelings of the people involved don't matter a anything to them. The illegals could just as well have been piles of rubble. It's the same to them. Low human beings see nothing wrong with that.

I don't know what (or why) you are whinning about. Personally, I like the Huckabee plan. There has to be some reasonable carrot to get the illegal immigrants to cooperate. In addition, if we implement the fair tax plan, the people working for the Internal Revenue can be diverted to the registration process of legal immigration before they are laid off and save the America People numerous tax dollars. This way we kill two bird with one stone - solve the immigration issue once and for all, and eliminate Income Tax.

Iâm baffled as to why Iowans are supporting Mike Huckabee. Sure, he sounds good in the debates with his witty one-liners and good explanations. However, is anyone in Iowa looking into this guyâs record? He raised nearly $500 million in taxes as Governor according to Fox News. Additionally, he supported giving tax payer money as college tuition breaks to illegal aliens. Even to this day, he still stands by his decision to raise taxes and give money to illegal immigrant. Iowans need to wake up and get past the smooth talk and lip service.

Couple comments:
1.) "... replace it with a fast-track process that would reduce the time it takes to legally immigrate from years down to weeks or months..."
Do compassion nopw = compassion for the empoyers who need warm bodies... any bodies... just get them here quickly? Forget the ones that are already established here, (because ther ARE some who HAVE learned English... living just below the radar). How do I know?
Because Governor Huckabee was willing to give their children merit schoalrships. Which brings me to...
2.) Presumably those merit scholars are now over 18. So they will be required to report back home within 120 days.
So what happens to that scholarship money? Throwing good money after bad... ignoring their presence for decades and then responding with hypervigilence after we've soaked millions into educating them... so we can return-to-sender?
Yeah - I have a Huckabee sticker on my car, which I got when I donated money to an individual candidate for the first time in my life.
But how can you ignore the position that it's okay to stay and go to college one day... but get the heck out of this country the next? I mean... you can call a flip-flop a stilleto... but it's still flat, cheap, and unattractive with nothing to prop it up. It's a flip-flop.

The third paragraph of point #9 reads...
"Improve our immigration process so that those patiently and responsibly seeking to come here legally will not have to wait decades to share in the American dream".
In EVERY response on this topic that I've heard or read from Governor Huckabee, he proposes a days or maybe weeks-long process instead of the several years long process that legal immigrants now face. We wouldn't have the problem we have now had this been implemented years ago. And the leadership on this issue has been missing from BOTH parties. We have a mess that none of them have been willing to deal with and they should be ashamed of themselves.
Huckabee's proposal secures the border and offers an orderly and expeditious process for illegal aliens to gain legal citizenship and point #9 of his plan is clear about that.
And I don't believe it will take years to implement.

You do not register and you risk deportation and you cannot come back in the US for a period of 10 years. It's the actual law! Nothing new!
The best thing to do is to give amnesty to people who are not criminal and have a clear background.Period. Other propositions or suggestions will never work!
An amnesty for the right people is the right thing to do. Do it fast, because we have more bigger problems to resolve!
We need more people in this country. And with a weak dollar, we cannot attract "Brains" from other countries. They make more money in Europe and very soon in South America. China and India are feeling good. USA is ill ! It's time to take a second dose of intelligence...OOps! We forgot the first one!

All this detail about immigration plans but absolutely no information about how much it'll cost US taxpayers to (try to) stop illegal immigration.
When was the last time you bought something without asking the price?
Why should you buy immigration reform without knowing the price?

Mike Huckabee's Shamnesty for Illegal Aliens!
December 12, 2007
by William Gheen
President of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC
ALIPAC
www.alipac.us
In August of 2005, I was called for an interview by THV-TV News out of Little Rock Arkansas to comment on Governor Mike Huckabee's comments complaining about an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on local chicken plants, which resulted in the arrest of 119 illegal aliens. What I said during the interview is even more relevant today "Governor Huckabee is known nationally as an illegal alienâs best friend!"
At the time, Mike Huckabee was known nationally for supporting in-state tuition for illegal aliens, which is massively opposed by American voters four to one! This plan forces American taxpayers to subsidize tuition for illegal aliens, thus replacing American students in the limited seats in colleges, while providing the wrong message and encouraging more people to illegally immigrate and bring their children into the U.S. to be trained for jobs, it is illegal for them to have!
The fact that Mike Huckabee would support a policy change despised by 80% of those he swore to represent in public office says a lot about what we could expect from the man as President.
Furthermore, his open denouncement of ICE raids in Arkansas is probably the result of his heavy financial support from Open Borders corporations like Tyson Foods. In Arkansas, the chicken processing lobby is so powerful they call it "Big Chicken".
While the public was cheering the raids, Tyson Foods was upset about ICE raids and so was their bought and paid for politician Mike Huckabee!
Tyson Foods Inc., has their global headquarters located in Springdale, Arkansas and they are the worlds largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork. They were large contributors to Mike Huckabee as Governor and now their federal political action committee, TYPAC, is backing his campaign for President.
Tyson Foods Inc. is one of the most egregious corporate violators of our Federal laws against hiring illegals in America!
In 2003, the U.S. Justice Department claimed that 15 Tyson plants in nine states had been conspiring since 1994 to recruit illegal immigrants, and that this practice was known by senior executives at Tyson corporate headquarters. It was determined in court that Tyson managers had been intentionally working with organized crime elements and temporary service agencies to import illegal alien workers, replace their American workers, and drive down wages. Tyson agreed to join the basic pilot program to screen new employees in 2004, but later raids continued to find large numbers of illegal aliens working for Tyson!
Earlier this year, the company supported the thrice-failed "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesties that were pushed in the U.S. Senate. These legislative attempts to legalize Tyson's illegal labor workforce failed due to massive public opposition with Zogby polls showing only 3% of Americans approving of how Congress was handling the issue! The backlash was so massive that angry calls to lawmakers, which were ranging 50 to 1 opposed, overloaded and shut down the entire Capital phone system!
Mike Huckabee is now experiencing a surge in the polls as GOP core voters continue to abandon John McCain and Rudy Giuliani for their pro Amnesty pro illegal alien records and stances. This is bringing Huckabee's immigration stances into the limelight for scrutiny and his campaign is fully aware that missteps on this issue can send him back down the ladder like McCain and Giuliani.
That is why his campaign has released the "The Secure America Plan" which details his 9-point plan to facilitate the "enforcement of our immigration laws and results in the attrition of the illegal immigrant population"
This is exactly what America wants to hear, America wants to hear about reducing the number or illegal aliens in America. Americans want illegal aliens to return to their home nations as current law dictates!
However, there is a big problem with Huckabee's plan. While most of the provisions will be positively received by the American public, especially voters, his promises to crack down on employers, build a fence, and bolster the border patrol are all nullified by positions number 3 and 9.
Huckabee makes it clear that illegal aliens will have to leave the U.S. However, what he is advocating is the 'touch back' provision which was a trick fielded by the supporters of the failed "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesty bills in the U.S. Senate this year.
In position #9, Huckabee says he would increase visas and expedite immigration processes so "those patiently and responsibly seeking to come here legally will not have to wait decades to share in the American Dream"
Such changes would clearly increase legal immigration levels, which already stand at 1.4 million per year, making America the most generous nation in the world for legal immigration. The majority of the American public, while generally supportive of legal immigrants, is in no mood for such a massive expansion of legal immigration levels considering the intense public backlash against illegal immigration.
Huckabee's intent to expedite legal immigration ties into the real problem with his plan. This is revealed in item #3, where he would grant amnesty to illegal aliens by having them sign up with the government and then leave the U.S. for a day or two and later on pick up new documents across the border to walk back in and say "Look at me! I came in legally this time!"
What a devilish farce! Millions of illegal aliens in America would quickly have no fear of immigration law enforcement and would be on the "path to citizenship" receiving benefits at the taxpayersâ expense. This provision would in effect nullify all of the other immigration enforcement promises of Mike Huckabee.
The mere fact that Mike Huckabee's campaign is imitating the tactics that the pro Amnesty lobby in Washington, DC deployed earlier this year tells us exactly who he serves and that he is willing to try and deceive the American public to accomplish his political agenda! Mike Huckabee has is now promoting the Pence Plan that we call SHAMNESTY!
One more President like that in the White House and we can kiss America goodbye. We will have millions of illegal aliens who have become untouchable by immigration authorities and millions more on the way once America has shown she is defenseless against the Global corporations pushing this agenda!
It gets worse, according to Michelle Malkin's article "Meet the GOP's Border Control Cross-Dressers" (Dec. 11, 2007) Huckabee joins McCain and Guiliani on the dishonest pro amnesty politician front!
It appears that Mike Huckabee has been pandering to the Open Borders Hispanic racist group LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), where he has promised them an 'open door' policy. He has also criticized state legislators in Arkansas who wanted to require proof of citizenship to register to vote! That really takes the cake when you think about the fact Mike Huckabee wants illegal aliens to be able to vote!
Even more disturbing is Mike Huckabee's decision to follow the deplorable lead of Senator's Harry Reid and Ted Kennedy by deriding Americans who are concerned about illegal immigration and opposed to the Senate AMNESTY bills as "driven by racism or nativism."
In an attempt to build street credibility, the Huckabee campaign claims they were inspired to create their plan from an article by Center for Immigration Studies (Cis.org) Mark Krikorian. While Mr. Krikorian is renowned for his concepts of attrition enforcement, he is opposed to the Touchback amnesty provisions Huckabee's team built in as this measure would nullify all of the other enforcement provisions listed! Mr. Krikorian, while cited as a source by Mike Huckabee's team, would probably call the plan another "No Amnesty Amnesty".
Mike Huckabee is clearly an Open Borders fanatic.
This is why there is a shockwave moving through the immigration enforcement movement after hearing of the endorsement of the Huckabee campaign by Co-Founder of the original Minuteman Project, Jim Gilchrist.
The embarrassing truth is that Jim Gilchrist has forced distance between himself and the vast majority of other groups and leaders in the immigration enforcement movement over the last year because of his egotistical, unstable, destructive, and growingly bizarre behavior. His behind the scenes actions have created a great deal of alarm from groups such as ALIPAC who were a part of the original Minuteman effort and who have supported Mr. Gilchrist in the past.
After Jim Gilchrist split with co-founder Chris Simcox of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, he quickly made enemies out of any group that refused to take a side in the conflict. He would not respect the neutrality of other sovereign groups and adopted an "with us or against us" stance that drove many away.
Jim Gilchrist's last attempt to muster Minutemen volunteers fell apart during the Laredo Texas operations he launched. While the opening day had many attendees, within one week there were less than ten volunteers on the border and Gilchrist himself was not even present most of the time.
Since that time, Jim has been engaged in a bitter battle against the Executive Board of his 501(c) organization after they terminated him from his position as director, which has thrown the whole organization into court battles. While most of our movement was neck deep in the battle against the Senate "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesty bills, Gilchrist was busy sending out his next wave of bitter e-mails decrying the actions of the "hijackers" of his organization.
Many of us in the movement have been keeping quiet about these problems, the threatening e-mails, and personal attacks, hoping that Jim Gilchrist would fade into the background, where his reckless behavior and failed organization could do no further harm to the movement, which is much bigger than Minuteman. We had hoped that his initial contributions to the cause in Minuteman 1 could be saved from his actions of late. Today, the rest of the nation is painfully learning what we know about Jim Gilchrist, due to his endorsement of pro amnesty Open Borders Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.
Since the Minuteman Project is a tax-free nonprofit organization, which is prohibited by law from endorsing candidates, one has to wonder why Jim Gilchrist is making endorsements for President, which will surely be challenged by other Presidential campaigns and pro amnesty groups.
Perhaps Jim just skimmed over the Huckabee plan like many Americans will do and fell for the bait? It is likely that he was so happy to hear from a Presidential campaign in the midst of his isolation that he jumped at the opportunity to be relevant again?
Jim Gilchrist and Mike Huckabee have made a terrible mistake by supporting a Presidential campaign which has stances in favor of "touchback" amnesty for illegal aliens, benefits for illegal aliens, voting access for illegal aliens, "comprehensive immigration reform" amnesty, expanded visa programs, and more legal immigration. They are both attempting to give the illegal aliens, the US Chamber of Commerce, and their supporting groups like Tyson Foods, LULAC, and La Raza exactly what they want, while trying to dupe the American public.
As Americans representing the 80% of our fellow countrymen and women who oppose this radical Open Borders agenda, we must do all we can to expose Mike Huckabee's true stances and record. We must also make it clear to Jim Gilchrist that he has just erased any positive contributions he may have made in the past to the immigration enforcement movement by lending his support to an 'Illegal Alien's best friend'.

Do NOT trust Huckabee, Clinton, Guliani, Obama, Edwards....They will ALL reward the illegals with amnesty/citizenship!! Read up on EVERY single one of them!!
Unless Tancredo, Paul or Hunter make first tier---our best best is going to be Romney!!
At least he took steps to stop the illegals while he was in office in Massachusetts. --He stopped the illegals from getting drivers' licenses.--He stopped the illegals from getting in-state tuition.--He gave the police the authority to assist ICE in arresting and deporting illegals!!!

Mr. Frank James,
You misrepresented Huckabee's plan. He is not pushing for mass expulsion, he wants the illegal aliens to sign up and then leave for a day and return with new documents. It is called the Pence Plan touchback provision.

Why should anyone listen to Huckabee until he's prepared to tell US taxpayers how much it's going to cost them to implement his plan on immigration.
Posted by: uk visa | December 13, 2007 10:44 AM
Huckabee's plan to end illegal imigration is a sham. Under his "touchback" amnesty scheme, illegals only have to return home for a day or so, and then they can come right back. This is AMNESTY, and Huckabee knows it. Do not be fooled.

Pay attention to the last 40 seconds of this video clip, it's where Huckleberry says his plan is to make them pay a fine and register for citizenship, but makes NO MENTION of making them LEAVE.
Notice also that comments must be APPROVED before they are posted. It's no wonder there are only 5, and all of them supportive.

Giuliani says that when he was mayor of NYC, his hands were tied because the feds wouldn't deport convicted criminals who were also illegal aliens, but he says he would have dealt with all 400,000 of them then (probably about a million now in NYC), if he could have handed over criminals who were illegal aliens to the feds for deportation, and if he could've documented all the law-abiding (other than breaking into our country) illegal aliens to force them to pay taxes, to register them on the government roles, rather than have millions of unknown people running around stealing identification, using our medical and education systems, and often committing heinous crimes.
Did you know that 25% of the prison population is illegal aliens? Did you know that there are about 1,500 outstanding warrants for homicide against illegal aliens in Los Angeles? We don't have to put up with this, the status quo which Hillary favors, so vote Rudy, the only candidate who can beat the big H.

Huckabee's positions are little different from mainline Democrats, he's a Democrat in Republican's clothing, and as soon as evangelicals begin to figure this out, Huckabee's numbers will sink like a stone.

That whole sins of the fathers on the kids is just a bunch of bull.
When these "kids" are of college age they are ADULTS. They make their own decision, to return to their home and come in legally, or to be criminals like their paretns. If they stay, they are criminals.
Boo hoo hoo.
Why should the US taxpayer pay for illegal aliens college? (it was financial aid, not scholarship money -- the Huskster likes to make things up)
Why should US students lose a place at one of OUR UNIVERSITIES to an illegal?
Illegals are going home anyway, why are we educating them. If we give them amnesty, then their whole criminal family get to come in.
How about kids brought up here on visas? How come they don't get a free college education from the American taxpayer?
How about legal immigrants waiting to come in? Why don't they get free college and to jump the line and come on in?
Gee... that would be unfair..
Gee.. the present group of illegals would mean that any amnesty is racist.... disciminates against all non hispanics who cannot easily invade our country.
THE PROBLEM IS OUR POLTICANS DON'T HAVE THE GUTS TO ENFORCE THE LAW.
