With a dead-heat between the Democrats, Hillary Clinton wants to talk.

Gallup tracking poll

The latest report of the daily tracking survey by the Gallup Poll today shows a dead-heat between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton among Democrats nationally.

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Somebody wants a debate really badly.

Somebody else doesn't.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, tied today with Sen. Barack Obama nationally in the latest Gallup daily tracking poll and within the margin of error in a virtual tie with Obama in recent polls in Indiana heading toward a crticial May 6 primary there, called on the junior senator from Illinois to revive a tradition started by another Illinoisan: Joining her in a "Lincoln-Douglas'' styled debate.

But Obama, in an interview that FOX News will be airing tomorrow, made it clear that he is finished (at least through Indiana) debating his rival Democrat, whom he leads in pledged party delegates and undisputed primary election votes in their quest for the presidential nomination.

"What I think the people of Indiana deserve is a real one-on-one debate where Sen. Obama and I right there in Indiana discuss these issues,'' Clinton said today in South Bend. "Now I have accepted the debates that have been offered, and actually Indiana has a debate commission which kind of organizes this, makes sure it's fair and that nobody gets any special advantage.

"I've said I'll be anywhere anytime in order to debate because I think the people of Indiana after having wandered in the wilderness of American politics for forty years deserve a debate,'' Clinton said. "Who knows, we might even carry Indiana in the fall if we start with a good debate right here.

"Unfortunately Sen. Obama has not agreed yet and he's turned down every debate that has been offered. So here I have a proposition and my campaign sent his campaign a letter today. You know, after the last debate in Philadelphia, Sen. Obama's supporters complained a little bit about the tough questions. And tough questions in a debate are nothing compared to the tough questions you get asked when you're president and you have to answer them and make tough decisions. And they complained about the moderators asking tough questions.''

This, according to a promotional sound-bite of Obama's interview with FOX News' Chris Wallace that will air Sunday, is what Obama has to say about that: "You know, I'm not ducking one. We've had 21 and so what we've said with two weeks, two big states, we want to make sure that we're talking to as many folks possible on the ground, taking questions from voters... We're not going to have debates between now and Indiana.''

Obama campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs added this today: "Sen. Clinton refused an earlier invitation that had been accepted to debate in North Carolina. Over the next 10 days, we believe it's important to talk directly to the voters of Indiana and North Carolina about fixing our economy, cutting the cost of health care and ending a war in Iraq that never should have been authorized in the first place.''

You've already lost Shillary, get over it and PLEASE take your bra burning, over-the-hill, psycho-feminist fanclub with you when you leave!

Senator Clinton must be inhaling, that which her husband said, he didn't inhale!! Why would Senator Obama do her a favor, after all the cheap shots, false charges and innuendoes, she has thrown at him?!! Let her go out to the voters and present her stand on the issues. That is the best thing she can do, for herself and for the Party!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

How divisive and destructive of the messiah to run from accountability for new issues:
1. Stepping on Alice Palmer's neck to start his career with the help of shady characters like Emil Jones
2. Flipping off HIllary and getting help from MSNBC---whom he's paid back and whom he owes BIG TIME
Why is CBS letting him get away right now with dodging the debate AGREED TO LONG AGO?
Could there be questions about the water MSNBC/GE nuke power plant builder is carrying for the “Senator” who got 300 G from Exelon after watering down a nuke reg bill in IL, voted for Dick Cheney’s 2005 Energy bill with 29 new nukes:
Look how they distorted the fingering of Hilary episode.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTJs0VRJLO8
The above is the original 43 second plus IN ORDER and with the VOLUME UP as Obama mentions Hilary and fingers her.
When you open below, you’ll see a clip of MSNBC you can roll on.
http://mediamatters.org/items/200804180010
MSNBC took it OUT OF ORDER and potted down the volume of Obama mentioning Hilary—didn’t even leave the nat sound up on background but also had the anchor speaking over it. She LIED and says it “took a while to get to” the flip off. THEY ARE DISTORTING THE ORDER OF THE TAPE.
3. New details about his involvement with Rezko associates nearly DAILY in federal court.
Who is this guy?
4. That wierd scary website recreate68---is this supposed to scare super delegates?
He's on his way down and wants to take the party, the country, the world with him.

Why should Obama dodge anymore of Billarys fake sniper fire, she's alreay lost, the only one's who don't know that are her and her insane feminazi supporters who really are just a bunch of hacks who going to vote for old man McCain anyway, screw'em..

Good Riddance To All Of Them..and don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out...

Its time for the Democratic leaders to put an end to this fiasco. Makes them look like ineffective parents. We are wasting precious time with anungracious loser. She should listen and respect the voice of the people and sit down graciously. She needs to face the facts. She did not win the delegates she needed. Really she leaves DNC no choice but to have force her to sit down.

Hillary doesn't deserve to even stand on the same stage as Obama let alone have a debate with him anymore.

I'm glad Obama is finally taking some swings back at her, she has ran such a lowlife scumbag slash and burn campaign that it would even make Karl Rove blush.

The Clintons are showing us their trues faces, the faces that were kept hidden from the public for all of these years, and it ain't a pretty sight.

We have Bill telling us unapologetically that he did Monica "because he could".

We have Clinton lying about Tuzla, and then lying to try and cover her lies.

These people are hardened politicos, and will stop at nothing to win steal the nomination, just like the Bush family in 2000.

Both the Bushes and the Clintons know that they could not win fair and square, so they deem that the end justifies the means for them.

They both think that the American public are sheeple to be fleeced, lied to and manipulated and they both have zero integrity.

It is laughable that they call themselves "Christians".

I never warmed up to the Clintons, even though I voted for Bill twice, and maybe intuitively, deep down I sensed something was lacking.

Now I despise them both and I will never change my mind about them.

Obama is not ducking debates. He is using an excellent strategy and will hopefully wrap up the nomination soon. HRC wants debates because she is low on money due to her own mismanagement and it is free coverage. Obama can run TV ads and get his message out at will. Plus, she knows that she will likely get more help from biased moderators who continue to perpetuate the lies and misrepresentations about him that have been in the media based on selective editing of comments made by Rev Wright. See the comments made by Rev. Wright’s sermon IN CONTEXT on Bill Moyers interview. You will find, as usual, we the American public are being made fools of by a media that does not bother to tell us the whole truth and others that just want to win any cost. We are not stupid, we can handle the truth about our country. The good and the bad. We don’t need the continuing series of lies and out of context misquotations. Even with all the negative attacks on Obama and the fact that he is running against 3 politicians at this point (HRC, BC and McSame), he has still won. He has the most pledged delegates and they can’t change that. Odds are almost zero that she can catch up. She can use what ever math she wants, she will not win if the DNC follow the rules. The only way for HRC to win is to steal it in the back room. If the voters allow this to happen then we get what we deserve, more of the same (McSame).

Obama should take to heart the lesson from an old time movie star who said one of the worst things an actor can do is appear in a movie with a dog or a baby. He never should have been in the last debate, which helped only Hillary because of the skewing of questions toward garbage. All of the 21 debates were nothing more than guest interview shows.

To all of you False Prophet lovers, you all seem to enjoy calling Clinton many names. Accus her of many things bla bla bla.. the bottom line is she speaks the truth when it comes to your Messiah is going to get pounced by the GOP. Like Ms Clinton said, the GOP knows all of her skeletons already, we've heard them all too, so theres nothing new they can try to attack her with , But Your innocent Mr Obama, if he does win the nomination, well just you watch him crawl away cowering after his first debate with Mr McCain I can promise you that!

Hillary's internals in Indiana must not be looking too good. In debt, lost the race and needs the free publicity.

She should get out of the race. Her desperation is embarrassing.

Clinton must really think the voters are ignorant sheep. It is so obvious why she calls for debates: EVERY candidate that is behind calls for debates to give the impression s/he is equal to the frontrunner; EVERY candidate that is being outspent calls for debates to get free publicity.

And, of course, the frontrunner refuses.

But PLEASE don't insult our intelligence by pretending that Clinton is on some kind of moral high ground calling for debates. The Clinton's political style is mud, mud, and more mud. Where do you think George W. learned it?

With all due respect for Senator Clinton, if she was sincerely interested in "real issues," I think ample opportunity has been offered her and the MSM, to raise and address "real issues." What the latest ABC debate has revealed instead are that the Senator and the MSM, and Stephanopoulos and co, have been thriving on besmearing the Senator's political opponent through innuendo. Both by her unwillingness to make a stand for what's right to that regard, and her opportunistic partaking in the innuendo, the senator has proven herself less than honorable. Furthermore, I have yet to hear her say anything she has not already said, ten or twenty times already in one of the many previous debates. I sincerely believe that those debates have been reflecting poorly on her character and done her more harm than good, overall. So why would Senator Clinton want to subject herself to more of the same is unclear to me. I think people have some fairly good idea of who she is by now. Her reputation has been dealt some serious blow (I neither like nor trust what she has become - and it breaks my heart) and I don't believe that any more debates is going to change any of that at this point. Just my 2 cents.

GOODBYE TO YOU, BILLARY!

Those times I waited for you seem so long ago
I wanted you far too much to ever let you go
You know I never got by, "I feel it too"
And I guess I never could stand to lose
It's such a pity to say

Goodbye to you, Billary
Goodbye to you

Could I have loved someone like the one I see in you
I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too
These last few weeks of holdin' on to your sniper fire stories, it's just to much
The days are dull, the nights are long
Guess it's better to say

Goodbye to you, Billary
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you, Billary
Goodbye to you

'Cause baby it's over now
No need to talk about it
It's not the same
My love for you's just not the same
And my heart, and my heart
And my heart can't stand the strain
And my love, and my love
And my love won't stand the pain
And my heart, and my heart
And my heart can't stand the strain
And my love, and my love
And my love.....

Goodbye to you, Billary
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you. Billary
Goodbye to you

Now, could I have loved someone like the one I see in you
Yeah, I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too
These last few weeks of holdin' on to your sniper fire stories, it's just to much
The days are dull, the nights are long
Guess it's better to say

Goodbye to you, Billary
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you, Billary
Goodbye to you

Goodbye baby
So long, darlin' and say hi to Bill
Goodbye to you, Clinton monarchy!
So long to you

She is desperately throwing anything and everything at Obama to throw him off his message.

Don't take the bait, Barack! Stay positive, run your own campaign on your own terms.

Does anyone doubt this is how she will act as president if elected? We're screwed.

Hey John E--go listen to Rush Limbaugh.
Rush may be too stupid to ask Obama or RESEARCH his silly little trip to someplace warm (as opposed to HOT when your buddies wanted by Interpol are under potential indictment--like one of your OTHER buddies)--
What was in those suitcases, do you suppose? Suitcases that won't get SEARCHED during a campaign season? And, why do their daughters wear those long, Farrakhan style dresses?

People ALWAYS talk about the RACE CARD, but tell me why nobody addresses the obviously blatant GENDER card thats being played by Clinton.

What a wuss!!!!..It was obvious in the last debate that he cannot take the heat...Guess he doesn't want to step on anyone's toes with that glib rhetoric he spouts out before Indiana...Obviously he could never stand up to the pressure in the White House. Course McCain will win anyway because all of the Obamanites won't face the truth that he cannot win this election...HRC can..It is no longer who we like best. It is who can carry the Democratic Party and win it..BRING OUR TROOPS HOME. ELECT HILLARY CLINTON and make it possible..

It always surprises me how much misogynistic venom there is in the Obama camp. Seriously, are you using the word, 'feminazi,'? A hateful term coined by RUSH LIMBAUGH in your critique of Hillary's supporters? Look at yourselves! Aren't you ashamed for parroting DITTOHEADS?

You don't like Hillary? That's fine; maybe you don't like how her campaign has been run, how long she's dragged it on, or (GOD FORBID) you have an actual policy criticism for her other than how negative you think her campaign has been.

But to reduce it to some uppity woman trying to do a man's job, following in her husband's shoes and shadow, or portraying her as some kind of man-hating kook -- that's below the belt, unwarranted, and frankly disgusting coming from the mouth of someone who claims to be a PROGRESSIVE.

Hillary's lost nothing. Obama is afraid to let his lack of intelligence show again. Of course he won't debate her, he's probably been advised how bad it makes him look that he can't stand up on his own. Last debate he stuttered, hesitated and was obvioulsy shaken. Gee, I want a president who who falls apart...

Good for Obama. He's got too much class for that trick. You know, it's reached a point with me that when I even see Hillary's face on TV, with that cackle and smirk and raised eyebrows, and pretending to know someone in the audience that is her very vest friend, I find my gut tightening up. Forget the gym, she's done wonders for my six-pack.

No more debates about so called "real issues" just like the disgraced one doctored by ABC. Obama should spend his time addressing the real issues of his real bosses who are the electorates and not boring and unimaginative Hillary.

What will emerge from the ashes of what was once the Democratic Party? It appears we have transitioned to a three party system in a two party world so something has to give - unfortunately the result for now is the R's will likely win again in November.

How about it pollsters: what's the outcome of a hypothetical three way race between Obama, McCain and Clinton?

Debate what? Flag pins? Bumper stickers? 60s radicals you worked with? Who could possibly need to see any more of that?

Obama now loger has to wonder why he can't close with the blue-collar workers - they don't vote for cowards.

C'mon Barack...be a man and debate.

The country is starting to find what your really all about...Oh, is that why you won't debate?

Paulo

They weren't "tough" questions, Hill...they were STUPID questions more fitting for a tabloid comedy show (albeit a lame one) than a scholarly debate. Everyone has had the opportunity to hear one of the previous debates. We all know where the candidates stand. Now the voters decide.

Smart move, Obama. I am debated out, thanks.

politics as usual. quit while you're ahead and then get your surrogates to tell your opponent to drop out, then spread the meme that she can't win so that people won't donate to her campaign, and to make her supporters give up supporting her even though she can still win the popular vote. Obama is politics as usual and his supporters are blind to it. "EMBRACE THE CHANGE". How scary is that motto? these people are so duped.

Obama should debate Clinton, the people of Indiana deserve it. He needs to stop hiding and talk about the issues without a speech written for him

obama is a loser. that is why he is afraid of hillary. hillary is an iron lady in the tradition of margaret thatcher and has beaten obama badly in each debate so far. obama is a chicken. now that hillary leads in the overall vote total and the dnc is going to meet to allow her delegates from michigan and florida she will be the nomineeof the party and the next president .obama needs to get out of the race now instead of ruining democrat chances in the fall. obama willnot debate because hillary will obliterate him from the face of the earth.

Yes! Let's do it Lincoln-Douglas style....Let's see Hillary stand in the hot August sun in one of those wretched pant suits for an entire day. She could wear that ugly yellow jacket that screams "LOOK AT ME". II seriously doubt her overly made-up face would melt by lunch--even the softer one she is trying on these days. Also, does anyone believe she could keep quiet while Obama talks? She loves to interrupt people. Then, she can take a carriage ride and do it again a week later. Seven times.

When talk moves beyond the cliches and platitudes of 'hope' and 'change' to the specifics of policy Obama doesn't come across as very informed. Probably because he isn't. That is why The Rodhamster wants to get him in moderator free debate. To expose him as a fraud.

A debate dodger is not exactly the type of tough-minded, thick-skinned individual that you want running the most powerful country in the world. If he can't take the heat of a one-on-one with Hillary, do you really believe Obama is equipped to handle the enormous geopolitical pressures of the U.S. presidency?

Bawk, buk, buk, buk, buk. Somebody's not man enough to debate Lincoln-style and it's not Hillary.

Why bother. She is a bold faced liar and an egomaniac of epic proportions. The woman borders on CRAZY!!! Want another Dick Cheney, then here's your girl. Obama 2008.

Obama can't win in the debates that's why he refuses Hillary's offer to have one in Indiana. Pretty soon it will be evident that he can't win the nomination either. He is on his way out and Indiana will be his Waterloo. Too many mistakes and too many skeletons that keep coming to the surface. As far as all those people that think that things have gotten too negative, you poor babies, it's a good thing you don't live in IL. This is nothing compared to what goes on in IL elections.

"And they complained about the moderators asking tough questions.''

Tough questions from the moderators? It was one of the, if not the worst debate so far in terms of questioning. Horrible questions in a super-market tabloid style of journalism. I don't blame Obama for turning it down, they already have had 21 debates, enough is enough.

Obama is scared. He lost the last debate. He can not answer tough questions. He is not fit to lead this country. He should debate. He cannot beat McCain in a debate. Obama is showing why he will not win the General Election in November. If Obama is afraid to debate a Democrat, he surely can't debate and win against a seasoned Rebublican.

This shows that Obama is not ready to be President. He should have finished Hillary long ago. But there is still a good chance that the Super Delegates will give it to he. McCain is beating Obama in FL and Ohio. McCain has a big lead in States that were very close three years ago. The Dems will not let Obama get the nomination if he can't get these states close.

Obama doesn't do well in debates against Hillary, all Americans know this fact. Their solutions on the issues are basically the same. He will if nominated debate McCain and his don't ask , secretive on questions of his character, judgments and associations will then be his down fall , and those questions will come up !

I knew Lincoln Douglas. Lincoln Douglas was a friend of mine. And you, Senator, are ... even weirder than Lincoln Douglas.

Unlike other Obama groupies, I have posted when I think the BHO team needs to do reality check. Now, its full time to take OFF THE GLOVES and shut down this Sit-Com/circus. You know what did it for me? Watching Pennsylvania results on the color TV. 2 things struck me. First, we are not a monarchy and seeing Bill up on stage reminded me of how much he let down Democrats and otherwise broke the public trust. Sure he did some great things and some great things just happened to get done. You get my point...enough of these hillBillies. SECOND, was analyzing the results. Only 100k voters switch out of 2.5 million cast in PENN, and barack would have gotten the big cheesesteak. But look at the Numbers for McCain and you see that this guy is going to get his clock cleaned in November no matter who. Look up hte page, and see the SwampGraphic --you might think its a tight race, OR, you might also see GALVANIZING. Thats what happens when Dems are so united, so motivated to talk to other indep and GOPleaning voters, and Move this Nation into a New Chapter. Folks, no matter how liberal or how conservative you think you are, or what social issues really annoys your personal jesus, hear me now and listen to me later: If we have any plans to continue the progress made after WWII, if we plan to pay the full bill for all returning men and women of the Armed Forces health care and employment help and a hand with their housing, AS WE SHOULD, if theres even a shred of concern in your mind that We can do better: Airlines/banks bankrupt/merging, Gas Prices Soaring, Housing Markets RollerCoasting, funding Schools or Prison ah heck whats the diff?! For the first time in this 21st century, the average working person and the average retired person is scared to frickin death. AFter you fill the gas tank, pay your health care bills, Meds, pay for your House/Property taxes, pay for your credit card which likely has "Normal" expenses not extravagances, after you set aside a little to take kids to ChuckE Cheese or Mickey D's, after you put some away for Church/Temple, you know what your paycheck/SocSec check has left? JACK SQUAT!! And, over the next Six Months, America will get even more clear picture of how and why that Economic Stress, is directly related to the overwhelming and ongoing fights of the Middle East and other Foreign Policy disasters of W. Folks, the modern Republican Party does not need to fight the Boomers big Govt or 1970s funk...we do that for them!!! No, what they have systematically destroyed is the New Deal, which was the result of years of social organizing, immigrant labor, academic and religious support, and tons of ordinary citizens who felt the promise of America was greater than their own personal reward or satisfaction. Thats what the GOP does not want, they want an Ayn Rand, Reagan/Thatcher, me myself and I mentality that says I'm an invididual, let that person take care of themselves! They want to eradicate the safety net of FDR, the sensible and collaborative nature of postWar public institutions to keep us safer, and they want, here's the sick part, the GOP wants all this WHILE THEY PROFIT from our misery. Sorry I break no tears, when I see a CEO take a pay cut from $55 million a year, compared 2 when I see a guy or gal in my hood lose a good job to China, who was earning $35k a year and now gets to deliver pizzas and worry where he find another job, keep her house, etc. In the next few weeks, all of us getting a Federal Rebate check should, Go Public with it: People in my UCC Church in wisconsin are talking about tithing, some of us want to hold public rallies to donate to Veterans or other charitable groups. Clearly some of us have high priority bills and debts or tuition for the kids, or new brakes for the used car. Thats okay too. When the smoke clears from this ill conceived and stupid early Primary season that has created the inevitable clusterfrothing of SuperDelegate whores and boosted MSNBC, CNN profit margins to new Winter rating heights...there will be a unified Dem Party led by Senator Obama and you will start seeing a whole lot of people that look like former HillBilly supporters, who are holding signs 4 Change we can believe in. Sorry Mr. McCain, you are a noble person and God Bless your sacrifice....but you want another 100 years in Iraq, do it on your Retirement check (or your Billionaire wife?) not the one I might never see in 25 years!!!! Peace and Love and Happy Greek -Orthodox Easter to my brothers and sisters around the Earth...yeah baby.....Opa!, you know it!! Say y'all, its nine days until NCarolina, anyone seen John, Elizabeth or sexy Kate??!!

You first three "posters" are in for a very rude awakening come May.

It's obvious that Clinton is seeking to use the debates as free publicity for her slam campaign since her funds are constantly reported as drying up. I don't understand why people support that O'Bama should agree to be her gratuitous secondary campaign source...

Being in a debate with Hillary without a moderator? I bet it was Bill's idea. I'm sure he's suffered the scenario many times.

Hillary, talk to he voters, after 21 debates why do you need another one BEFORE Indiana??? Oh, that's right, I forgot you need to bring up Rev. Wright, and all the other things that are not related to the ability of being President of the United States. Hillary seems to think that the way for her to win the nomination is to destroy Senator Obama with lies and issues that have no place in this election. If she had to deal with the real issues, she would be revealing who she really is.

Obama would not only "duck" another debate, but should also dodoge and run. In this world where women want equal pay and also still want the man to pay for their dinner, arguing "one on one" is a can't win proposition. If he is too aggressive he is a an arrogant male. If he backs off, he will be portrayed as a wimp.

It is the equivalent of getting into a fight with a woman. She can hit the man, but he better just grab an hold o or he will wind up in jail.

There is also the latent matter, below the surface in many white minds, of the black man threatening a white woman. This, thankfully, is a smaler percentage of the population today, but tod deny this group exists, would be downright stupid.

From what I have seen of the most recent debates, they have been mainly about style, not substance. Big man vs. small woman, black mugger vs. feisty, white housewife. It's right there just below the surface.

The only way he should debate should be on radio.

Why is he so scared ?

Considering the states Hillary has already won, and giving her the corresponding electoral votes, she would already have enough to win the election. So I'm tired of Obama's weak arguement that he is way ahead of her. He is a legend in his and his wife's own minds. Wake up Democrats!!

The only reason Obama the Great won't debate is that Ted Sorenson won't be able to write all his lines. If anyone was watching....Hillary wiped the floor with him in the last debate. Obama is all show and no go.

How about that? Instead of healthcare, guns, abortion, Iraq, let's let them talk about other issues that plague us in this country. What about college tuition relief for the middle class? How about foreigners being increasingly welcomed into our country's universities taking up seats that should go to Americans first? What about that pesky "your teenage child somehow either evaporates or hits the lottery at age 17" on your tax form? Let's ask about denying healthcare and freebies to illegals. Let's see if they know what Rule 287(g) is and if they support it. How about protections for the people from creditors? Anyone recall any of the 3 talk about reversing the Repug Congress' ability to let all creditors raise your rates if you are late one time even if not with their own company? I don't. How about credit protections for people who cannot pay medical bills because of no insurance (yet illegals don't worry about such things). These are just some of what I would ask if given the chance. I have heard their answers to all the rest.....

A man afraid to debate with a woman? hmmmm strange isnt it?

Judging from the sexist comments coming from both the male and the female 'gobamas' here--it would appear that maybe there is a sort of muslimesque tint to the Obama worldview--and that of Rev. Wright--women to the back and side of the 'mosque' please--oh, they don't mind, really.
His 'time' if it ever comes will be 8 years from now.
Deal with it.

Truly. Why would you not give the people of Indiana the opportunity to hear the two of you go one-on-one? Ducking a debate makes you look weak, Senator Obama. Come on. Stay in the game.

Jeff, Paulo, Jerry why would Obama want to debate this whack job any further??? Speaking of nuts have you guys ever thought about therapy??? Ya sure could use it. Please do it for us Swamp readers who have to suffer through your comments on a regular basis. p.s.s Paulo shouldn't you be crawling back under your rock, after all I'm sure it's after your curfew.

Hillary wants to be on TV? Let her pay for commercials. Why should Obama enable her to get free exposure on TV? It's smart for him to refuse to debate.

Besides, they've debated 21 times. Do we need 22? I think not...

The Obama campaign responded that they didn’t feel the public was clamoring for more debates, but if Clinton and Obama truly adopted the style of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, a great clamor could result. The Lincoln-Douglas debates unfolded in cliff-hanging installments. Questions asked at one debate were avoided until a future meeting. If the candidates could get away with silence, they ignored each other. Voters had many concerns: financial panic, immigration issues, infrastructure needs, but the candidates limited the discussion to personal attacks and the subject of slavery. Ordinary Americans, farm boys as well as people with good educations, flocked to the debates and listened to three hours of complicated speeches, filled with political, legal and historical arguments.

What did the candidates gain by appearing on stage together without a moderator? When the election results were tallied, Lincoln won the majority of the popular vote, but unfair apportionment gave Douglas enough votes to retain his seat in the U.S. Senate. Douglas had tapped voters’ anxieties and managed to hold on. When he returned to Washington, however, Douglas lost his powerful position as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Territories. In contrast, although he started out as a relative unknown, Lincoln’s campaign led to national prominence. He spoke for the ages, and his clear speeches helped divergent political factions understand their common interest.
