The Clintons are ready to tear their party up -- including making it impossible for Sen. Barack Obama to get elected president -- the way Rep. James Clyburn tells it.
While Obama himself has maintained that whatever breach is opened in the Democratic primaries by his contest with Hillary Clinton can be repaired once the Democrats have a presidential nominee, Clyburn, a political power in South Carolina and majority whip in the U.S. House, maintains that Bill Clinton is plowing Obama and the Democratic Party under in the interest of electing Hillary Clinton.
"I was sharing with the reporter the things that have been said to be,'' Clyburn said last night on MSNBC, in a talk with Keith Olbermann on Countdown about interviews that he has given in recent days, "I have gotten a lot of mail from people, telephone calls.
"I was on the campus of a university (where) the excitement was great back in January and February,'' Clyburn told Olbermann. "Now they seem to be feeling that the graybeards are positioning themselves to overturn the will of the people, these superdelegates - they don't quite understand what the superdelegates are.
"They think we're waiting in the closet somewhere to snatch this nomination away and so that's a feeling that people have got.''
This, courtesy of MSNBC, is a transcript of Clyburn's interivew with Olbermann:
KEITH OLBERMANN: Your statement to Reuters about what you've heard in South Carolina and what you've heard on the House floor in Washington. The quote was, "African Americans have reached the decision that the Clintons know the Clintons can't win this but they are hell bound to make it impossible for Obama to win in November."
Does that group include you, sir? Have you come to believe this yourself?
CLYBURN: No. That didn't include me. I was sharing with the reporter the things that have been said to be and I have just talked to her, an African American member on the House floor who said that to me and I have gotten a lot of mail from people, telephone calls. I was on the campus of a university was the excitement was great back in January and February. Now they seem to be feeling that the graybeards are positioning themselves to overturn the will of the people, these superdelegates - they don't quite understand what the superdelegates are. They think we're waiting in the closet somewhere to snatch this nomination away and so that's a feeling that people have got.
So that's all I was saying, that people are saying this and I think it's a great concern.
OLBERMANN: Surely the specifics of the racial aspect to this are being overplayed, aren't they? If anyone Democrat were to deliberately try to undermine another Democrat's chances of winning in November, wouldn't that just be, regardless of color, gender or anything else, would that not be political treason or something like it?
CLYBURN: You're absolutely correct. There is no question about that. That's why I keep telling people, what I said to The New York Times the other day, I said in January when we had the debate down at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, I said Bill Clinton needs to chill out. That was in January.
At that point, everybody thought that this thing would be over on Super Tuesday in January and everybody thought at that point the nominee, or the leading candidate for the nomination would be Hillary Clinton. That's certainly what I thought. But even then, I thought the president was saying things that would anger black voters and he should chill out.
Now we are down almost into May and I'm saying the same thing. Just the only difference is that this time there's another person that's in the lead who happens to be African American. So people are now applying the race thing to it and it's no different from what I said back in January.
OLBERMANN: So what do the Democrats do about this, because if there's a large contingent of supporters who are necessary for an election in the fall, who believe that there is essentially traitorous acts going on to keep one person from being the nominee, how do you bring the party together behind either of those nominees or even a third person?
CLYBURN: Well, that's my point? Between now - we have nine contests left. I think the conduct of this campaign going into North Carolina and Indiana - the conduct of this campaign in those two states could very well be determinative of what we will have after we get a nominee. I think we're in a very, at a very critical point in this process and if we're not careful, we could do irreparable harm.
If we conduct ourselves between now and May 6 with everybody talking about their platform, everybody talking about their vision for the future, everybody talking about what the Democratic Party means to the American people, then a climate, I think, will be created where if you close this nomination process down and whoever is in first place, whoever wins the nomination will in fact have the other person's support.
OLBERMANN: So the gist of this today is from the remarks that you may to the New York Times and to Reuters is that you've heard this enough that it's a problem in the campaign that the Clinton campaign needs to address in some way but you yourself are not necessarily of the opinion that they're sabotaging Obama's chances in November if he's the nominee.
CLYBURN: That's correct and I'm not - in fact, I've seen some writings today from opinion writers all over the country now saying the same thing. In fact I understand the New York Times article -- is doing another story on Sunday saying they are gathering that kind of sentiment from all over the country. So I'm not saying anything that people aren't saying among themselves and many of them are saying it to me.
It just so happens that on yesterday or the day before or whenever I said it that I made public what I had been told.
OLBERMANN: That took some courage, sir.
James Clyburn of South Carolina, third ranking Democrat in Congress. Great thanks for some of your time, sir.
CLYBURN: Thanks for having me.

Just as there is a "Fog of War", the "Fog of Campaigning" can also breed short (and at times false) memories.
Geoff Garin, the replacement on the Clinton team for Mark Penn, claims in today's WP that there has been "one campaign...that has been mean-spirited" and "unfair" and that it is "not ours".
Garin, who seems to be a genuine and decent professional who has been dropped to the helm of a listing ship, attempts to right it not by changing the direction of the boat, but by trying to reverse reality.
Let's take a look:
Clinton at the Jefferson-Jackson Day Speech:
"I'm not interested in attacking my opponents, I'm interested in attacking the problems of America. And I believe we should be turning up the heat on the Republicans -- they deserve all the heat we can give them."

Good thing he was born before widespread pre-natal ultrasounds. Who knows how they might've used that against him? Clinton's people have thrown similar jabs before at Obama but it hasn't fazed him. So their seems to be a little more fury behind the punches as now that Obama's may have taken the lead in Iowa according to the Des Moines Register's most recent poll." April:
MSNBC: April 14: Clinton Attacks Obama On Air
Sun-Sentinal: April 22: Clinton attacks, Obama hopes
And what of recent words of Mr. Garin himself?
From the April 20 Meet the Press:
MR. AXELROD: ...Did you not put a negative ad on this weekend in Philadelphia? The--100 percent negative ad attacking Senator Obama?
MR. GARIN: No. I don’t believe we did.
MR. AXELROD: Yeah, you did. Go back and check with your people, and it was, it’s an ad on lobbying, and it’s circulating...
MR. GARIN: It’s not. It, it ends up, I believe, with...
MR. AXELROD: No, no, it’s 100 percent negative ad, Geoff. Go back and ask your people. I understand you’re new in the campaign, and I love you, man, you’re a good friend of mine. I know you to be a good, positive person.
MR. GARIN: Right.
MR. AXELROD: But I think that there’s some vestiges of the old regime still in place.
MR. GARIN: Well, look, when, when, when...
(Garin never answers this question--Axelrod later in broadcast: "The—well, first of all, that’s what’s in your negative ad that you didn’t know about in Philadelphia.")
Note: This of course leaves self-inflicted attacks (i.e. sniper fire) aside. Incidentally, while I have known people to err when they are tired (for example to say "sniker" instead of "sniper"), I have never seen anyone invent and repeat an entire episode that did not occur as a result of exhaustion--although, of course, this commonly does occur when people are completely asleep.
Hendrik Hertzberg, in this weeks "Campaign Trail" (New Yorker) has noted the tragic and inevitable game here, whereby Obama, who has tried to run a different type of campaign--explicitly principled and positive--has been drawn into defense by the incessant attack. This attempt to now flip and revise history in this very fundamental manner is something that we have seen in our recent Presidential past--and is something that should give us pause.

Hi Mark Silva,

B Hussein Obama is the root of his problem don't blame it on the Clintons.
Obama started out as Abraham Lincoln in February 07 at the Old State Capitol in Springfield accompanied by his inventor Dickie Durbin to announce to the whole world he was an agent of change.
He and Durbin hid Rev Jeremiah Wright inside both Durbin and Obama knew Wright was a crazy anti- white rascist who had been to Libya with Kadafi and was anti-semitic and had given a lifetime achievement award to Louis Farakhan a Muslim who ridiculed Jews.
The driveby media and liberal Democrat socialists had girls swooning and fainting at Obama rallies.
Then, when his best bud Tony Rezko went to trial the truth of Obamas 17 year friendship and legal ties to high rises and Mayor Daley the dreivebys started to analyze because Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity exposed his ties even though the drivebys weren't doing their job of investigative reporting.
In time the Jeremiah Wright tapes leaked slowly and Americans were mad at God damn America instead of God Bless America.
Then, William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn showed up and Obama said they were his neighbors. Slowly it leaked they were fundraiser holders for Obama in 1995 when he ran for the Illinois Senate. It also became knowledge that Michelle and Obama were inolved in a non-profit board with the Weathermen Terrorists at the University of Chicago where they held seminars.
Obama also got lots of funds from or through Rezko. Obama gave some back to charity but not the money Obama got through Rezko's funding talents.
Obama has a paper thin resume serving 10 years in the Illinois legislature and two years in the Senate.
He learned well from the Daley machine how to advance in politics so Abraham Lincoln became a political hack in the Chicago machine.
Now all this talk about Obama critics being rascist is not justified. Rev. Wright started the racism at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago where he preached this venom for 20 years while Obama slept like Rip Van Winkle instead of quitting this rascist black church with black liberation theology.
Then, Charles Gibson and the other anchor in Philadelphia finally acted like news men and asked Obama who he was hanging with and what are his core values he says that is a distraction from health care and global warming lynchpins of the liberal socialist belief system.
He is the most liberal Senator in the U.S. Senate he'll raise everybodys taxes, he's for abortion, partial birth abortion and even infanticide, while waxing on about hope and change not much hope or change from this Chicago pol.
Climb down from the pedestal Obama America knows who and what you are. Don't blame the Clintons for you--you did it to yourself through a series of bad judgements. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

With respect, there are millions that disagree. Over 15 million have voted for Ckinton. Many of us see the race-baiting and nasty campaigning and divisiveness as coming from Barack Obama and his campaign. "Political Treason" is running a campaign that started pushing all the Republican smears against the Clintons months before the election got started. Setting the tone,
When Hillary won NH and MI, all of a sudden - just as we get to a heavily AA state...the Clintons are racists! Notice at each state that has AA's - suddenly the racist stuff comes out. Please stop insulting our intelligence. We are onto Obama's campaign tactics now.

Spin doctor, James Clyburn. Shame on you for not being bold and courageous enough to endorse a candidate. This whole nominating disaster will have been avoided. Be bold and courageous. For one thing, the Democrats (DNC=Dictatorship National Committee) will steal this process from the people, hence this nominating process is still going on, when it is mathematically impossible for the Clintons to catch up to Obama. Why are superdelegates whimps? Shame on undeclared superdelegates.
Posted by: John Adams | April 26, 2008 10:17 AM
So can somebody explain why Clinton's use of superdelegates equals overturning the will of the voters, but Obama's use of them doesn't?

Old 'news' Cara Prado.
and your methodology--isn't.
Any analysis of the race clearly shows this pattern:
1. BARACK SCREWS UP
2. THE MEDIA COVERS IT
3. HILLARY, ASKED TO COMMENT, EITHER DEFERS OR IS VERY MODERATE IN HER COMMENTS.
4. BARACK ATTACKS HER.
When Hillary does something the media can pounce on, the pattern is:
1. BARACK'S SURROGATES GO FOR HER JUGULAR.
2. HILLARY THEN DEFENDS HERSELF AGAINST THE OBAMA ATTACK/MEDIA SUPPORT MACHINE
3. OBAMA HIMSELF ACCUSES HER OF ATTACKING HIM.
Posted by: educate yourself | April 26, 2008 10:36 AM
Will this be Obama's tactic as President? Have surrogates cry "racism" whenever he's in a tight spot?
McCain was dogged by a persistent Huckabie. He never called Huckabie a spoiler. Obama's in a race with Clinton where she actually is running not far behind. His reaction? She's involved in a plot to make him unelectable. Must be racism, all right.
Posted by: Mark | April 26, 2008 10:38 AM
JJ Gildersneeze:
So can somebody explain why Clinton's use of superdelegates equals overturning the will of the voters, but Obama's use of them doesn't?
Pledged delegates represent the result of people voting - Obama is ahead in total votes and therefore total pledged delegates. There is no mathematical way for Clinton to turn that around. None.
Meaning that Superdelegates going for Clinton would overturn the vote of the majority of the Democratic Party. Superdelegates going for Obama would simply be ending the contest now based on the fact that Clinton cannot possibly win the popular vote/pledged delegate count by the end of the primary season.
One overturns the will of the voters, one doesn't.

CLINTONS are running for 2012.
So they are trying best to make OBAMA LOOSE in 2008 which gives them McCain at age 78 in 2012.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE HE WAS AMERICAN PRESIDENT.
That shows why America is SUCH A LOW COUNTRY in the eyes of world.
20 Years American "REGIME" is in "DICTATORSHIP" of "BUSH+CLINTON" Family.

Don't blame the Clintons? Are you living in a parallel universe? They are doing everything they can at this point to help Obama lose this election so they can run in 2012.
In WWI, the Russians burned everything behind them as they retreated (Scorched Earth policy) so the advancing Germans would have nothing to live as they advanced. The Russians lost the battle but they won the war. Sound familiar.
If you cannot see this forest through the tree's then you are still drinking klinton Kool Aid and you and the party are doomed. Unbelievable that our educational system put's out people who cannot think for themselves. don't rely on the media - use your brain.

Dems must unite when this is over. 4 more years of Bush's policies could mean 8 dollars a gallon, 10 percent unemployment, more tax breaks for the richest, debt that even your grandkids can never pay off, and more wars, maybe nuclear.
Love Barack like no other, but will vote HRC if I have to---don't let the right wing nutcases in the blogs bait you! They are responsible for most of the nastiest and foulest comments, disguised as Clinton supporters, but actually republicans.
Yes we can!

Thank you, Educate Yourself, for your post -- which succintcly summarizes the BO - MO.
The most obnoxious example is when Drudge Report posted a well-circulated photo of Barry in a turban. The Obama campaign, including Himself, immediately issued apoplectic responses. (I hope He doesn't get a call at 3 AM).
The media covered it as if Clinton had given Obama the finger, oops, bad analogy.
Nobody ever questioned the attribution, they just took Drudge's word for it.
BTW: A month or so later, Drudge leaked the full text of Obamas speech on race a full hour BEFORE it was delivered. No doubt, Hillary was the leaking source of that item, too!

"ahead in total votes and therefore total pledged delegates. There is no mathematical way for Clinton to turn that around. None."
Check yourself here, Paul. You're making some huge assumptions about how you *think* people will vote. Maybe the actual voting public would like to participate in your election too.
As of right now, Obama has won 1489 pledged delegates. If you add in his committed superdelegates --all of whom can change their minds any time between now and the convention --he's at 1726, still 298 short of the 2024 he needs to clinch the nomination.
If and when he wins the nomination, Clinton will be out of the race. That hasn't happened yet.

Karl Rove’s remarks on Obama today are prima facie evidence of who it actually is that Republicans regard as the greater threat.
His sticking his chubby mug into Democratic affairs can realistically be interpreted no other way.
Hillary would be boiled alive by a ruthless opponent. Her entire adult life is nothing but a set of contradictions, prevarications, and ethically questionable behavior.
Obama truly has tried to take the high road, but Hillary keeps dragging things back down into the mud. She’s not a fighter as in the sense of hero, she’s a thug.
But the Republicans have a storehouse of material to use on her, including reminding everyone of her sleazy husband (remember, straight-arrow Al Gore blamed Clinton for his 2000 defeat).
When the Republicans were through with her, she’d be in tears, for real this time.

IT'S TIME AMERICA:
It's time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP.
Hillary Clinton seemed almost somber at her victory speech. As if part of her was hoping Obama could have defeated her. And proved he had some chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources. In all honesty. I felt some of that too.
But it is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up.
Hillary Clinton say's that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Mr. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World.
Mr. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Mr. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes.
If Mr. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human.
Sen. Hillary Clinton: "You know, more people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent. In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination. And it's also clear that we've got nine more important contests to go."
Sincerely
Jacksmith... Working Class :-)

Are living in a Alice in Wonderland like place?
Hillbillary started on third base in this election and it's a freshman senator with that most American of names who has more delegates, votes, and yes, money, who is winning.
If you were trying to drive the expectations game any lower, you'd have to look up to see down.

In response to some Hillary supporters:
The Drudge Report cited someone from the Clinton campaign as the source of the picture of Obama in the Kenyan traditional clothing, which he wears as a courtesy to his host when he was on a goodwill trip.
Bill Clinton said that after the South Carolin primary that Jesse Jackson also won the same primary before. Geraldine Ferraro said that Obama would not be in the same position (leading in the primary) if he were white. To this date no one from the Obama campaign has said that Ms. Clinton get to where she is because she is a woman or she is married to a former president.
Incidently, no supporters of Ms Clinton have been outraged by Ferraro suggesting that no white male politician could have run a better campaign against Ms Clinton than a rookie politician with little experience.
The Canadian press widely reported that the Clinton campaign was actually the one that contacted the Canadian embassy to assure the Canadians that the threat to re-negotiate NAFTA was mostly political posturing.
The Clinton campaign did initially refrain from jumping into the Wright controversy. Later, after Obama's speech and as the controversy appeared to die down Ms. Clinton decided to talk to Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and made the famous "he would not be my paster" remark. Yes, the same paper owned by the leader of the vast right-wing conspiracy.
In response to Obama's comment about bitterness of working class Americans the Clinton campaign eagerly jumped in the controversy and labeled Obama elitist, joining the Republicans in the criticism. It should not be a surprise that Republican would accuse Democrats of being elitists, since they have been doing it for years. Both Gore and Kerry were labeled as elitists who were out of touch with mainstream Americans, and we all know what happened next.
Even Romney had decided to join the fun and called Obama elitist, making it the first time in history that three politicians each worth over one hundred millions (McCain, Romney, and Clinton) called someone who just paid off his student loans a few years ago elitist. Yes, working class people can relate.

Is the Democratic Party own by Bill Clinton?
When Hillary lost in Iowa, Bill rolled up his sleever went loose, since then, he has used tactic after tactic. Insults, RACE CARD, Divisive tactics, then RACE CARD again. I have had so much respect for Bill as my most respectfull politician of this age. Who could believed that Bill and Hillary will tease down the Democratic party and Senior members of the party will merely sit around and wash. Are there any senior members in the Dem party? Weeks ago, there was this isssue of whether the Democratic leadership is an entitlement of the Clintons? Now it is more clear, The Clinton own the Democratic Party, everyone else works for them
If by any Manipulation, Clinton become the nominee of the Dem party, I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER vote for the Democratic party again. Good Luck Bill the SPOILER

Thanks ElliiotNC---for this:
- - - Why oh Why would team Obama think that using the Drudge guy would not come out?
Maybe it's the same reason they thought they could get away with the Rezko crap?
The "I'm not a Muslim but I sure act like one" bit?

IT is an obvious injustice that the black community by and large has done to the only presidency in recent history that bring prosperity, economic growth, surplus and making turns away from war; Yes Bill Clinton who once was crowned the Black President.
YET, the black community has no hesitation to throw him under the bus. OBAMA more than once denigates Bill's presidency. It is OK for the black community but not vice versa. The Black politician are elite groups in the democratic party that become a pain in the rear of the public.
NEXT time when a black politician like James Clyburn running of office near your district, please think twice about your votes.
THIS is a lesson that Americans will long learn after this election about racial coalition that the black community is using the kitchen sink approach throwing to candidates not of their brotherhood. Racism goes both way, BROTHER!
