The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, John Conyers Jr., Wednesday issued a subpoena to David Addington, chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, commanding him to appear June 26 to testify before a special subcommittee.
The subpoena was authorized at a committee meeating Tuesday. If Addington resists, he could be held in contempt of Congress.
Conyers seeks Addington's testimony about the role Bush administration lawyers played in authorizing extreme interrogation techniques after the Sept. 11 attacks. Several media outlets have outlined his influence as considerable.
Another architect of those policies, former Justice Department lawyer John Yoo, has voluntarily agreed to testify on June 26.
Addington, along with Yoo and other high-level administration officials such as Pentagon aide Douglas Feith and CIA director George Tenet, have said that any work they did crafting legal policy is protected from disclosure by the doctrine of executive privilege, which prevents advice given the president from being forcibly revealed.
Yoo, now a law professor at University of California-Berkeley, wrote a memo in March 2003 that outlined the legal justification for military interrogators to use harsh tactics against al Qaeda and Taliban detainees overseas -- so long as they did not specifically intend to torture their captives.

So when exactly will Conyers start holding his breath? Will he get his wife to come in from the Detroit City Council and call Addington names like "Shrek?"
