Clinton's legacy: Woman in White House?: The Swamp
The Swamp

It's not so much Hillary Clinton's "biology'' that held her back as her "chemistry,'' suggests a Republican pollster who sees a path for a woman in the White House. A Democratic expert says Clinton has blazed the trail.

Has Hillary Clinton paved the way for anyone but Hillary Clinton?

It's possible that Clinton's historic successes in her party's presidential primaries - scoring the first victories for a woman in important states such as California, Ohio and Pennsylvania - will clear a path for women seeking the presidency in the future. Regardless of what becomes of Clinton this year, experts say, she has opened a long-bolted door.

"People have seen her as a legitimate contender, going beyond gender,'' says Doug Schoen, a pollster who has served the Clintons. "The next time there will be less concern about a woman, because we have had a woman running a competitive race.

"We have to bet that she won't be the ultimate nominee,'' Schoen adds. "But that being said, she has run an extraordinary race... I don't see an obvious heir to Hillary's mantle, but if there is one, she is not going to be held back because of gender - and Hillary, I think, has blazed the path.''

Yet some say only Clinton, a former first lady in an administration that presided over eight prosperous years and a second-term senator who has established her own credentials, could have achieved the successes she has this year.

Clinton entered this contest with nearly universal name recognition, albeit sharply split between good and bad. And the bench for potential female contenders is still sparsely populated by women, especially when it comes to governor's mansions and Senate seats. Should Clinton fall short of her party's nomination, some say, it's not evident that she's eased the path for others.

"There is no clear answer to that yet,'' says Ruth Mandel, founder of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. "She has been out there for so many months and under so much pressure and under relentless commentary and scrutiny... It's hardly made it look like something that most mortals, human beings male or female, would want to take on... I see her as Wonder Woman blazing the trail, but I don't know what that means for mortals coming up behind her.''

Read the rest of the story in today's Tribune, and see a Swamp extra: Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway saying it wasn't so much Clinton's "biology" that was a problem this year as her "chemistry...''

Voters are ready for a woman, Conway suggests - "the problem is, they weren't ready for this one.''

"Her biology didn't hold her back,'' says Conway, president of The Polling Company. Voters have a tendency to trust women more than men on critical questions of integrity, the pollster says. But Clinton "really squandered a whole bunch of that when she came out with the Bosnia comments... It exacerbated some of the latent concerns about her honesty.

"She should be credited for getting into the ring in what, in politics, is one of the oldest male professions - persistently and chronically so,'' Conway allows. "I think people should feel comfortable that they may see a woman president in their lifetime... but it may be a governor, and it could be a Republican.''

The media misogynia cover-up continues. Pummel the woman, give the guy a pass - then blame the victim. Yes, the Obama trolls will continue to pile on, say it's not about gender, say they're open to women, just not "this" one. A generational opportunity has been squandered. This will be an infamous stain on the Democrats. Women and fair-minded men will never forget the contempt in which they hold women in power. If McCain picks Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson as VP, the ticket is a shoo-in.

I don't know why the press always speaks in terms of "legacy" for politicians.

They are not royalty. They are people trying for a job, they succeed or fail, and that is all.

Of course, she has shown it is possible for a woman to do this.

Had she a better character and temperament, she might well have succeeded. I have little doubt another capable woman (for Hillary is capable, but very nasty) will come along.

The U.S. already has had some fairly remarkable female politicians. Ann Richards of Texas was very much so. Christine Whitman was a very capable politician. In the world, there have been many capable woman leaders, whether you agree with their particular points of view or not, Margaret Thatcher, Indira Ghandi, and Benizer Bhutto were exceptional people.

A man of color and a woman as serious candidates tells us something of a milestone has been passed.

There's still loads of prejudice in the U.S. - and Hillary has appealed to it more than once - but most people appear open to either possibility.

It's just a matter of talents and qualities, and in this case, Obama has them, hands down.

If Hillary has a legacy, it is a tragic one of enduring years of abuse and then showing she's abusive too.

The constant efforts to advance the Obama campaign while ignoring or denigrating Hillary's campaign is a slap in the face (or should be) to every reader who bought into the notion of fair play in the media.
Given the Obamas much too fast (and largely unexamined) rise in the political world, the placement of this article at this time must be viewed for what it certainly is:
Siding with one faction of the democratic party in what apparently is a well-planned internecine battle for control of the party apparatus.
If the author cannot at least PRETEND to be uninvolved in the race, he should just show up in August and cover what happens.

Crazy woman in the whitehouse!!! The Clintons are megalomaniacal power freaks.

Fact check: Shirley Chisholm, congresswoman from New York, blazed the trail in 1972. Don't forget that. If women had been as supportive of her as they have been of Hillary then there would not be a 36 year hiatus of women seeking the presidency, and the path may not have had to go through a disgraced president. If fact her chances would have been better had Bill Clinton not made a fool out of himself. But keep the historical perspective clear about Shirley Chisholm.

Neither Clinton the woman nor Clinton the senator is any more remarkable, accomplished, or electable than several other women now serving as governors, state senators, or U.S. senators. Clinton only got as far as she did because of name recognition. She made sure her name and face were out there all during Bill's years, and she has never stopped since. It was always: All About Hillary. We can wait for the right woman.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING FROM INFORMED DEMOCRATS TO DNC

To: DNC Members
From: Informed Democrats
Re: Understanding of Florida Primary Rule Violations
Date: Until Michigan and Florida are Seated

Dear Governor Dean & Esteemed DNC Members,

STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING: As an informed Democrat, I am seeking to understand when will, we, Democratic voters see true equity in the Democratic Presidential Primary race?

RULES OF UNDERSTANDING: According to the rules of the Florida Democratic Presidential Primary, agreed to by all Democratic Presidential Primary candidates, no Democratic candidate was to advertise in Florida prior to the Florida primary.

FACTS OF UNDERSTANDING: Senator Barack Obama purchased national cable advertising and advertised HEAVILY in the State of Florida prior to the January presidential primary.

REQUEST OF OUTCOME BASED ON UNDERSTANDING: When will Senator Barack Obama and his campaign receive written (and publicized) notification he is; therefore, disqualified from receiving ANY of the delegates he and his campaign are seeking when Florida is ultimately seated, based on he and his campaign’s failure to follow DNC rules?

EQUITY IN UNDERSTANDING: As a lifelong, Informed Democrat I know and understand you and the esteemed members of the DNC will do everything in your power to make an equitable decision in this matter, with liberty and justice for all.

THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING INFORMED DEMOCRATS REQUEST: Thank you in advance for the time and attention you and the esteemed members of the DNC have and will give to this matter, because we know you and the members, hold that all men and women are related equal in DNC decision-making. Right?

THE ONLY UNDERSTANDABLE OUTCOME: Seat Michigan and Florida, as they are currently counted, and award the only Democratic candidate who can win in November the nomination-Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Why embarrass the Democratic Party any further by awarding the nomination to the media created Manchurian Candidate Obama and wait for the Republicans and the 529 to unload to the world Obama’s unelectable dirty laundry: Antoin Rezko, William Ayers, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Iraqi born Aiham Alsammarae, the former electricity minister convicted of corruption in Iraq and his deal with Obama and Rezko to build nuclear power plants in Iraq-a nation we are currently at war?

Democratically Yours,

Informed Democrat

Hillary has been swiftboated by the driveby liberal media who are assuaging their white guilt by promoting B Hussein Obama. It is clear he is not qualified as a reading of Charles Krauthamer's column along with Ann Coulter's column today attests.
It is not blacks that are being assailed it is an unqualified black in the person of Obama who prances on the stage sans telepromter making a jerk of himself.
His associations with terrorists and indicted Tony Rezko along with a myriad of questionable Arabs like Auchi, Mahajans, Ali Ata etc show him to be without ethics period.
Meanwhile the drivebys don't notice while turning on the woman candidate Hillary.
If Obamas all the drivebys have he is the dullest knife in the drawer for our socalled fourth estate. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

I see this differently.

I think Hillary Clinton had an excellent opportunity to do something great for women with this campaign. She could have run a different type of campaign, cleaner, breaking away from the norm. She could have advocated for women and fought against the stereotypes of women in power.

Never once did she speak out about references to 'Rocky' or 'testicular fortitude'. She whined about mistreatment, then made fun of Obama about 'not standing the heat', but then returned to whining when the going got tough. Remember Bill Clinton saying if you don't want to play, don't put on the uniform, or something to that effect?

Hillary's loss has nothing to do with her gender, and everything to do with her management abilities and willingness to do or say anything to get ahead. I admire her stamina, but do not admire her bullying tactics. She could have done it differently - she could have done better. Now she's losing and it is no one's fault but her own.

"Swiftboated"? "Denigrating Hillary"?

None are so blind....

It is Obama who has been treated unfairly, any number of times from the obsessive coverage of Rev Wright to garbage of about trinkets like flag pins.

Hillary has been consistently nasty and unfair at least since Pennsylvania. Her words have sometimes been despicable, but always abrassive and uncivil.

She has not demonstrated she has anything to offer but the ability to stay on her feet, glare, and whisper poison.

She's richly earned every bad bit of publicity she's had.

Susan, you have said it all. You should be quoted in every book to be written about this campaign.

By your own logic, you must be a racist if you want to pass on the "generational opportunity" to have an African American President. . Do you really expect the African American community to forget the stain that would result from taking the niomination away from the African American who won the most delegats?

Or perhaps you're really a misogynist if you really believe a woman capable of being President come around only once a generation. It's sad that you have such a low opinion of women.

Americans will WAIT for the right woman president - Hillary Clinton is NOT the one! Too many lies, too many scandals, too much self-righteousness, too much politicizing and as I write this. She, her husband and campagin staff are trying to arm-twist the superdelegates to no avail. Harold Ickes agreed to the Fl/MI debacle. He is using negative duplicity... the superdelegates won't let him get away with this. Nor should they.

Of course, there will be a female President !! There better be, they have as much right to lead this nation as anybody. Lest we forget, Representative Shirley Chisholm was an early pioneer in the pursuit of the Presidency, by a female. Thanks for the reminder, " GW ", and she was a soft spoken, determined stateswoman, who never did get her due, for her capabilities, in so many arenas.
As far as Senator Clinton goes, she made errors, serious errors, but we are all capable of serious errors !!! Just like Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain and his errors, lapses in ethical judgements!! The question is : Are those errors serious enough to deny anyone the nomination or the Presidency, itself ?!! Unfortunately, I answer in the affirmative, in both instances.
In Senator Clinton's case, her offense against a loyal and dedicated segment of our Party, who, in the first place, deserve a lot better, especially from the Clintons, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, for them to forgive and forget !! I can only guess, of course, because I am not a member of that heroic and dedicated group of Americans, of African ancestry !! No, I am not pandering !! They deserve much more than my measly words !!!
As for Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain, he is running for the Office of our Presidency. He committed some very serious errors, in the past and they are the types of errors, that are not verbal errors, but behavioral errors !! The only reason I use " questionable conduct " in association with Senator McCain's name, is to inform those voters who aren't aware of this part Senator McCain's history. In hopes, that they will look into this episode in the Senator's life and then, be able to make informed choices, when it comes to voting for our President !! Unfortunately, a lot of us did not make those informed choices in the last two elections and look at the disaster that has resulted from our negligence, 8 years of incompetence and borderline criminality !! Before I end this explanation, I would like to state my admiration and appreciation for Senator McCain's service to our country and to his unfortunate captivity, but that is no license to flaunt our laws and ethical standards. I sure hope Senator McCain can assure our nation that this lapse in ethical judgement will not happen again.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

This will be an infamous stain on the Democrats.

I don't get it. The democratic party is the ONLY party that would have the guts to run a woman or an black. I get the feeling your one of those that won't vote democrat if your candidate won't win. So you'll vote for the party that runs old white guys. Brilliant! When did you first believe political races weren't dirty? Give me an example of a race that was fought with the Marquess of Queensberry rules? Don't vote...vote for McBush...vote for some other candidate that doesn't have a chance in hell of ending this war....but don't let me see you on these threads a year from now bitchin about the war.

Hillary's legacy is one of ENTITLEMENT! She wanted the presidency GIVEN to her because of her last NAME, just like Bill Richardson said.

But she was one-upped by a once in a lifetime candidate who is simply better. One running for history also - but the RIGHT person who just happens to be black. Not the FIRST black man, but the RIGHT one. One who is not running on that platform, nor is embracing it - because it does not define him! He is simply an American.

And I agree with Fitzgerald the right female candidate will run and win one day. She, like Barack will win because she is a qualified American - not defined by her last name or gender, but the message of the nation! God Bless her, and America!

I admire her stamina, but do not admire her bullying tactics. She could have done it differently - she could have done better. Now she's losing and it is no one's fault but her own.

Susan put it very well. The nation got a good look at who Hillary Clinton really is. They chose Barack Obama instead. I'm still not sure who the real Hillary is. Either way I don't think I like her as much as I did during the first couple of debates. Obama in 2008.

Bemused,
Right On!
Look for Hutchison, Sebelius, and other inept, unknowns.
Won't work for me!
Someone who is not a "contender", someone sweet and demure, non threatening, not someone like "this woman". You know, a real "sweetie".....

Am I in America? The reason I ask is, somewhere the America I was told existed, disappeared. There is all this talk of entitilement and history. Where is the talk of progress and hope? It is not served by Mrs. Clinton. I have the notion that entitlement is not a part of this equation.
Sen. Clinton has the unique position of having been close to the power which gave us a great eight years of prosperity. What a wealth of opportunity she squandered. As we see it, Mrs. Clinton has stayed in this contest far too long. It amazes me that someone who wants to unify this party is so very divisive. And this thing that she is being unfairly treated while in this arena is ludicrous. Hillary, you can't have it both ways. When you suit up for the game, don't complain when the game gets away from you. This has been a man's arena so long that they have not made a special ruling about how to address a female any differently than a man. Nor should they have to. If you truly want to gain the prize, you'll have to stand the same pain as everyone else in the game.In the same manner. There is no doubt that she is a formidable woman and would serve well in government. But her unwillingness to read the signs and concede gracefully have revealed her for who she truly is. A pouter, who would rather throw an elongated tantrum because things have not gone her way. Face it she ran a poor campaign, with many flaws, not the least of which was fiscal irresponsibility. Her campaign is in the red, she still owes for campaign advertisements in many of the states in which she campaigned. If this is any indicator of how she will run our finances I am deeply troubled.
I have a suggestion. If you feel you must string out this exercise in futility, do so. However, after inevitability is realized, finally capitulate with grace and lend your support to the candidate of choice and rally your supporters to the cause of a better nation, or be seen as what you truly are, a woman who feels scorned but is not. Do not lend yourself to the position of "sour grapes" opponent. Your political future depends on it.

Thank you Susan!
