Sen. John McCain--the real one, not a celebrity impersonator--stopped by Saturday Night Live last night. (See? He can stay up late!)
He showed up on Weekend Update urging Democrats to take their time in picking between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
Here's the clip:
He also appeared in mock campaign ad, joking about his age and pork-barrel spending:
Here's that clip:
(We still have a preference for the Darrell Hammond bit a few weeks back about McCain being caught on tape checking out the Early Bird Special.)
So, how did he do?

Dumb old man!

I thought both spots were incredibly lame. His delivery was halting and the humor was forced, particularly in the fake commercial. While McCain is noted for a dry sense of humor, he was clearly out of his comfort zone.

Saturday Night Live has been going down the tubes for years. It's only right to have MCcain on this sinking ship of unhumorous personalities.

haha he straight up bounced the second he finished. Seth looked to be goin for the handshake but the senator was too agile.

Never forget what SNL/GE/BIG NUKE/MSNBC/BIG WEAPONS in the bag for Obama NOW did to Kitty Dukakis with that cruel NOT FUNNY skit about her alcohol problem in 1988.
Some of us have been watching and been active promoting democratic values---not just our careers for decades.
The mainstream media will descend like the hounds of hell upon the democratic nominee---let's make sure we KNOW just who should be on the top of the ticket.
Not yet convinced about Obama--then there's no hurry, is there.
McCain's got a lot of nerve.
Educate yourself about misogyny—you’re soaking in it.

He's definitely not a sketch comedian, but it was still worth a giggle or two.

I wouldn't suggest a career change, but still amusing. Worth a smile, though not a laugh.
McCain '08!

Memo to McCain Staff
You need to get new writers and McCain was not at his best.
But then again SNL has gone down hill, it is no longer funny or entertaining. The TOO NEED NEW WRITERS AND PEOPLE WHO ARE FUNNY NOT STUPID.

Reinforced perceptions of Obama as a presidential sliver compared to McCain's timber. Talk about a mismatch. Hillary for once had it right; Obama's great at speech-making but a total question mark at best when it comes to demonstrated competence and accomplishment.

He's clearly overly relying on the teleprompter...
ammusing but not excellent. Watching him squirm when Jon Stewart asked him to denounce bush as a religious nut was funnier

Clinton, and Obama, should be regulars on Laugh-In.

He looked at the teleprompter the whole time. did not look good at all. Not that funny either, his delivery was weak.

Humor may be his best defense here. He is old. Very old.
At some point he will need to answer, and it is reasonable to ask him, what medication is he currently taking.
And, in all honesty, we need to ask ourselves if it is OK to have a president that will, most likely, be on chemo during his (our) next term.
Not funny, but real.

Why are the other two presidential candidates afraid to host SNL as McCain has already done, admirably at that?
Posted by: Jeff | May 18, 2008 9:46 PM
Poor guy. Doesn't he know that SNL sucks? Someone should clue him in: most of the people who would watch this dying horse of a show are a bunch of middle-age hippies who have no idea about real comedy. (And furthermore, who wouldn't vote for him.)
