MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Concerned that swarms of supporters would turn Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's appearance at commencement Sunday into a campaign rally, Wesleyan University officials have closed attendance to the public.
The university is issuing each graduate 10 tickets, which will be used to gain access to Andrus Field, where commencement takes place. The field will be surrounded by a barrier and people without tickets will not be allowed in, said David Pesci, a university spokesman.
Members of the public will be able to watch from Foss Hill, which overlooks Andrus Field, and from buildings on campus -- the chapel, the science center, Patricelli Theater and Crowell Concert Hall, where it will be simulcast.
Seating at those venues will be on a first-come, first-served basis, Pesci said. The event, which starts at 10:45 a.m., will also be streamed live from the university's home page.
Obama will be standing in as commencement speaker for Sen. Ted Kennedy, resting after seizures and the discovery of a brain tumor this week.
This comes from the Hartford Courant, a Tribune Co. newspaper.

As Ed Sullivan used to say "A really Big Show" B Hussein Obama giving commencement speech for Teddy.
The elitist liberal academic setting with tickets given to special people just rounds out the liberal academia mind set.
The peasants can watch from closed circuit TV. Wow how nice of these pointy headed intellectuals!
I'm sick of Obama he prances across the stage todays speech will be written by David Axelrod or a subordinate chosen by him. There will be teleprompter. At least he won't ad lib like he does in jerk style fashion.
This has been a long campaign the one thing I know this Obama is a dangerous socialist who will hike taxes and hike taxes.
He learned from the master taxer Dickie Durbin his mentor.
November can't come quick enough to take him out of our lives served up by the daily driveby media ad nauseam.
Look at his recent record losing badly in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. He is a polarizing figure who is out of the mainstream of society the disciple of Frakhan and Jeremiah Wright. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Please ignore my last comments. I actually regretted writing them as soon as I hit the submit button. I think Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States and we will be a better country for it. Intellectuals are not the problem in this country. We must all come together for change.

Barry BEGGED Ted 2 X to let him give the speech.
No doubt this will be twisted in the edit booth to make it look like he can take massachusetts--the state Hillary took.

Jerry, you sure have words against Obama! You blame him for the tickets being given out to a few people - when if you had read the article, it was Wesleyan which chose to. The truth is there for you - displayed. But you either ignored it or it just passed by you!! That reminds me that the voters who did not elect him in Kentucky "feared Islam" - while everyone knows he is not a muslim, these people seem either not to know or just ignore the truth. But then again I remember, the ones in Ohio, PA, WV who did not vote for Obama had one characteristic: less educated. Perhaps that explains it.

Jerry, its a little early to be drinking don't you think? McCain won't win in 08, he is too old. As the great Owen Hart used to say " Enough is enough and its tme for a change".

Continue on your winning ways, Senator Obama and I look forward to your speech tomorrow. My guess, it will concern the definition and meaning of our Democratic Party. I hope you can begin to talk about a draft, that nobody is capable of avoiding. especially the rich and famous. That is one guaranty against any repeat of the disaster in Iraq ! Also, we will not be forcing our men and women in uniform from having to go back into a conflict time and time, again. That is the democratic way, instead of following the inept Ridiculous Republican way, of relying on National Guard personnel to populate an occupying force !! Tearing up families, improperly outfitting them to go to war and , upon their return home, to find abject services, privatization, at the Veterans Affairs administration. If you want more of this ineptness, than vote for Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain, he's always been about the money, since he became an elected official !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

Obama's grass roots movement is beginning to go national.
The man came from a single parent family who once took food stamps to this. His academic achievements are a result of his own intellect rather than political and social connections.
He never made more than 240,000 dollars in his life before 2001 and all his money has been made from autobiographical books he has written.
He says he is not perfect and he will not be a perfect president but he will spend every day, like he has most of his adult life, trying to make the lives and the future of American people better. I not only find the refreshing for a politician but I believe him.
My vote is for Obama.

So now all college students are liberal elitists? And their families? Jerry, you're off the deep end. You know Obama writes more of his own speeches than the other candidates, so you're either ignorant or a liar. Bush/McCain may have lowered taxes for me, but most will pay more than the difference in gas/health care/local tax increases. Thank god that lunatic fringe elements like you are few and far between.

Jerry White needs to go back to school for some ejucatin. It is hard to believe these people can be so full of hate toward someone they never met and obviously have not even listened to. This writer is the reason people around the world think USA is full of spoiled, disrespectful, selfish red necks, spewing opinions without the facts.
God bless ya "Jerry".

Jerry, I just realized that I was being a little hard on you. But it was too late. I hit the post button. It's better to have people who care passionately (whether they agree or not), than to not care at all. Your opinion counts. Go Jerry! Go Obama!

Jerry people like you are pitiful because there is a movement in this country and it's leaving people like you behind in the dust. Throwing around words like "socialist" and "liberal" is so yesterday. Only the old and tired used these words now. Jerry get with the program, otherwise this is going to be a long, miserable campaign for you.

I am somewhhat amazed the school even allowed this, as it's certain to turn into a campaign rally, not a commencement.
What I find MOSt interesting is the finding out that it's not that kennedy asked Obama but that Obama ASKED Teddya -- TWICE -- to fill in.

After researching Obama for a year and reading his books I'm sure he will deliver a very inspiring commencement speech, as a truly fantastic speaker that his is. He won't make it into a political speech because he has class and knows what is appropriate. Teddy and his stepdaughter will be proud.
