The Swamp

by Andrew Malcolm

In an obvious attempt to be ignored for a while, Tom Hanks with no fanfare, news release or hoopla, late last night put up a video on his MySpace page endorsing Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for president.

Tom Hanks

Had it come on, say, a Monday morning, the endorsement by the popular and widely-respected Hanks would have caused seismic shifts on those rock shelves that underlie Hollywood and promise to slide the place into the ocean someday.

Thanks to The L.A. Times' dauntless Tina Daunt, we are right on top of this major international political story. "BEWARE," says the headline on Hanks' video, "Celebrity Endorsement."

"I'm Tom Hanks," Tom Hanks says directly into the camera in what looks like someone's den, "And I want Barack Obama to be the next president of our country. As an official celebrity, I know my endorsement has just made your mind up for you."

He continues in a straightfaced, tongue-in-cheek manner to seriously endorse the freshman senator. Hanks acknowledges all the candidates -- and some of their relatives, associates and supporters -- have made gaffes in recent weeks.

But he says he reads history sometimes and cites the groundbreaking peaceful turnover of power in 1797 from George Washington to John Adams as a major turning point in history. And says the same sort of corner can be turned by the election of the country's first African American president, a member of a race once officially considered only three-fifths of a person here.

Hanks especially praises Obama's character and vision, integrity and ability to unify the country. Hanks' endorsement is a breath of good news for Obama after a few difficult weeks involving the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who Obama says is wrong.

It'll be something positive for Tim Russert to ask Obama about on "Meet the Press" Sunday morning, but Hanks' approval may not carry much weight with the working class Democratic voters where the senator's support has not been strong.

Things have been relatively quiet on the Hollywood endorsement scene of late, since it's a given that most prominent celebrities there will be endorsing Sen. John McCain of Arizona. Just kidding. McCain's got Sylvester Stallone and that's it.

Hillary Clinton lined up Jack Nicholson too. And Obama has also been endorsed by Jane Fonda but that hasn't shown up on many billboards yet.

"I'm Tom Hanks," the actor/director/producer says at the end of his video, "I wrote and approved this message, and I am now going to turn off the camera." He gets up, walks around out of sight and the camera goes off.

Celebrity endorsements are another distraction and an undermining of voters decision-making process. We, as voters, do not have to think, we react to that celebrity's choice!
So, let's get back to discussing issues and leave the candidate's private life alone!! If you can't tell whether a candidate is a good person, that you have to spy on their private life, than you are already predisposed to, not voting for that person. I think that is what really happened with the Reverand Wright non-story and non-issue!! The media has a " justifiable " reason for its obsession with sound bytes, it's called greed, but for a segment of the electorate, to thrive on it and to use it as a mallet, to beat voters with a different opinion, is reprehensible!! They can't sell their candidate, on face value, so they must re-focus the discussion on their opponent's flaws, in some cases, fabricated!! Senator Obama was willing, and still is, to limit the campaign's focus on the issues, but he had to respond to the ally-cat tactics of his present opponent!! That is the unfortunate truth about this election. Good-luck, Senator Obama. you have run a honorable campaign, which I think the voters will reward you with a victory in the coming primaries!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

How do YOU know what Tom's intention was in releasing this Saturday instead of Monday. How dare you impute to him the intention of avoiding last-minute seismic shifts. Perhaps it was intended to reach MORE people who fool around on their computers during weekend leisure hours, than on a Monday back-to-work morning. I don't mind when you opine about others' motives, but I resent you assigning a motive to them.

I truly hope Mr. Hanks' analogy regarding to the change of power from Washington to Adams doesn't turn out to be prophetic. The transfer of power may have been smooth, but the ensuing presidency was a disaster. John Adams was a terrible President.

Dear Fellow Americans,

Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is and will face very critical "Challenges" in coming,
months, years, and decades. It is very essential that
we pick out next President on following criteria.

1. A candidate with "Vision and Statesmanship".

2. A candidate with " Stable Character and Morality" .

3. A candidate with "Presidential Temperament" and
"sound Judgment".

4. A candidate with "little Washington exposure" and
"connectedness with New voters".

5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than
"Tears
us down".

In my professional opinion there is only one candidate
left, who bears all the above qualities aand that is
Honorable Senator Obama.

As an independent registered voter since 1974. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,
and second Bush in 2000. In the process last interest
and stopped voting.

This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let Washington stay the same.

We can not afford our Greatgreat Nation to become less
than what we are and can be.

We need to send clear and candid message to the world
and some 24 hour partisan hateful media. These media
outlets are trying to deprive, dupe, and derail us
from getting it right this time.

They are trying there best to deny us better rather
than bitter future. { Our Greatgrand Nations people
are
persistently and constantly subjected to Psychological
terrorism" thru these hatful partisan media outlets.

We Americans are not going to allow them
psychologically terrorized us and silence the masses.
I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President. let
us not get dragged down into racism and sexism.

Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, fellowships, friends, faith, funds, fun,
future with fairness and freedom and without fear or
favor.

We can not afford to lose any of above. Let us stand
up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand Nation for
centuries to come.

God Bless our Great grandNation, its diverse people.

Our future needs stability, security, safety,
sustained progress and restoration of our due status
in this perilous Global World at all levels.

Tom Hanks has TRUE VISION!

This is a fabulous endorsement.

Clinton Decries China's Acquisition of Indiana Company -- Ignoring Her Husband's Role in the Sale:
By JAKE TAPPER
Apr. 30, 2008

"As she campaigns throughout Indiana, Sen. Hillary Clinton has been talking quite a bit about Magnequench, a Valparaiso, Ind., factory that moved to China".

"We've got to elect a president next January who's going to remember Magnequench," Clinton told voters in Valparaiso on April 12.

"It seems, however, that when it comes to Magnequench there's quite a bit that Clinton has conveniently forgotten".

"We went to Valparaiso," Clinton told voters in Princeton, Ind., last night, "where there used to be a plant called Magnequench that made the magnets that helped to guide the precision-guided missiles, the so-called smart bombs. You've seen those they take off, they go down the chimney, they were incredibly sophisticated and these magnets, you know not the kind you put on the refrigerator, like we all do but these really sophisticated magnets were instrumental making that happen."

"Clinton continued, saying, "Well, a Chinese company bought Magnequench and then they decided that they were going to move the whole company from Indiana to China. Now the president of the United States has the authority to veto that kind of a move, but Senator [Evan] Bayh begged the Bush administration not to export it it was going to lose jobs but it was also going to lose the know-how, the technical sophistication that created those magnets. President Bush and his administration wouldn't, basically wouldn't even give Evan Bayh the time of day. Those jobs left, and along with them went the savvy to make the magnets."

"What Clinton doesn't tell voters is that Magnequench was originally sold to Chinese interests during her husband's administration, which okayed the move despite concerns about national security and eventual job loss. Experts say the Chinese acquired the "technical sophistication" that created the magnets long before George W. Bush took office."

"Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind,, Clinton's top surrogate in the state, often joins her on the stump in bashing the president for allowing Magnequench to move abroad. What Bayh doesn't tell voters these days is that he has blamed the company's moving on a 1995 decision made by Clinton's husband's administration."

It means nothing to the common man but it means a lot to people who actually give money.

Bubba Shrimp is all aboard.

Looks like no Lincoln bedroom invitations to the Hanks if the Clintons win.

It doesn't matter. If the so called blue collar workers keep electing the wrong person. America will soon have another President such as Bush Clinton. Sometimes I wonder if they're stupid or smoking something! I'll become 50 in a few weeks but I've decided that this will be my last time voting. It's useless when some white people can't be open to change. It's sad to see so many young people who have become engaged in the political process. But also see the real fears and hate of the white middle class who are struggling like so many others. Remember the blue collar group also voted for Bush twice.

obama has hanks and Hillary has real americans. obama has elitists and Hillary has real people. some people are smith and jones others are the grabowski's. we are the grabowski's. we are the american people and we want one of us------HILLARY CLINTON!

I was never interested in politics until I heard and saw this guy named Obama speak. I just turned 18 and did not think I would care about politics, but here is a guy who really cares about the country and seems to be a very good person and all anyone wants to talk about is his former pastor. I think it's unfair to us young people who really want to hear more on his views and changes and all the media and Clinton (who by the way I did care for anymore when she showed me that she is not a great listener by attacking Barack on his speech) by distracting us with the Wright issue. I am a white american and for the first time in my life I do not see him as just another black guy running for President, I see him as a REAL person who truly cares about the people and wants us all to be equal. It's about time for the USA to wake up and make the smart choice because its obvious to me who should be President. He has shown me that he is the man for the position. Some people have been very successful with little experience too!

Hey John E Boy---anybody can paste a stupid article here about the candidate they want to lose:

Meet the Press, Obama, Tim Russert, May 4, 2008, Obama lovefest, soliloquys
May 4, 2008 · 3 Comments

Barack Obama was the guest of Tim Russert on Meet the Press, Sunday, May 4, 2008. Did Russert ask Obama tough questions? Did Obama answer tough questions or did he launch into another diversion of a soliloquy?

Did Russert ask Obama about William Ayers?

Did Russert ask Obama about Robert Blackwell?

Did Russert ask Obama about Tony rezko?

Did Russert ask Obama about Larry Sinclair?

Did Russert ask Obama about Donald Young’s murder?

Here are questions Tim Russert asked Obama:

1. Jeremiah Wright. Russert asked a few tough questions about Wright and the fact that Obama knew about Wright’s hate sermons in 2007.

Obama used the opportunity to distance himself from Wright and used most of the first 20 minutes as a soliloquy to talk about race, etc.

2. Russert asked if Obama thought it was fair to question his judgement.

So far, after about 20 minutes, it has been an opportunity for Obama to present his platform and ignore questions with diversions, and soliloquys.

I will keep you updated.

3. Oooh, here’s a tough question. What do you think about Clinton’s temporary gas tax removal?

Obama agreed it wa pandering. Why didn’t Russert ask Obama if he had done anything meaningful in the senate regarding our energy policy.

4. Oooh, another tough question. What about ethanol a subject important in your state?

5. Iraq and Iran. Would you support limited strikes in Iran?

Obama responded:

Iran is the beneficiary of our being in Iraq. We should have regional discussions and direct talks. When asked about the comments that a quick withdrawal from Iraq would cause genocide, Obama spoke of a phased withdrawal. He mentioned 1 to 2 brigades per month and taking 2 years. (This sounds like the current plan).

6. Should the US protect other nations from Iran.

Obama gave an evasive answer unlike Hillary’s earlier response.

7. Afghanistan. Would you as president, be in favor of a surge?

Obama, yes.

8. If the super delegates get together and pick Clinton, what would you do.

Obama rambled and spoke of supporting the Democratic party against John McCain.

This was one of the worst interviews I have ever witnessed. It came as no surprise. NBC is in bed with their “golden boy”, Obama. I am disappointed in Russert. He is capable of so much more. We get no surprises from the MSM.

Well, Colonel--I could CARE LESS how many BARS and STARS I BOUGHT for your silly chest--that doesn't make you anything but a cog in the machine that's bankrupting us.
I voted for Ford--not Carter, BECAUSE JACK ANDERSON TOLD ME WHAT REAGAN WOULD BE LIKE--WHAT BUSH WOULD BE LIKE AND HOW 'JIMMY' FROM PLAINS WOULD BE THE DISASTER HE WAS.l
I like him much much getter as an ex president.
So don't give me your 'wisdom' about Obama. Carter's for Obama--that's a problem. (It was funny to watch the Obama camp quickly backpedal on 'news' a few saturdays ago that Obama was gonna go to the MIdeast with Carter.
That woulda rendered Rev. Wright kinda redundant, eh?

Tom Hanks hasn't looked that good in YEARS. He was a great actor but is kind of a has been.

I guess if he jumped in a lake I might follow him. But I won't be following his vote into that lake.

NOVEMBER = RE-VOTES IN ALL STATES, FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN FOR SURE

NOVEMBER = NOBAMA

He is a dishonest do nothing.

OMG COL are you for real.. Your voting track record says a lot about your political opinion and its a word that rhymes with "trucks" that best describes your choices in the past. So based on your own admission of mistakes and being that you are endorsing Obama, I take that as not the right choice! DOH!

Boy I don't know if that is a recent picture of Tom, but if it is he has had some really major plastic work done on his face. Tom your endorsement means nothing to people who are concerned about the real issues in this campaign or the issues facing this country. Get a life and leave the politics to the experts. Ha Ha like Oprah, Ha Ha Ha! Another useless endorsement.

Who cares?
Who cares?
Who cares?

If this columnist did 2 minutes research, he'd discover that Hanks threw his support (consisting of his own money and clueless newspaper columnists) to Obama a year ago. On March 21, 2007 (over a year ago) Tom Hanks made a maximum $4,600 contribution to Obama.

Hanks has a very long record of megabucks contributions to the Democrats, including the DNC, John Kerry, Al Gore and (yes!) Bill Clinton.

Don,

You do what?

No one should vote for a candidate on a celebs advice or endorsement. They're probably paid for it. But, at least in Tom Hanks there's a sense of honesty. Better Hanks than Cruise or Travolta.

Who cares.

WHY TOM HANKS MATTERS-- Filmmaker Tom Hanks appreciates history and the guiding principles that make our country great. His work reflects his his desire to see us live up to our highest ideals. Whether it is through telling the story of John Adams, World War II, or small town America in "That Thing You Do," he is all about doing the right thing.

You might not know it, but Tom Hanks is a fourth cousin, four generations removed, of former President Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States.

Watch his endorsement of Barack Obama on YouTube. It is a message I hope all Americans will take to heart, now and in November.

Why Tom Hanks Does Not Matter - "... as an official celebrity..." What does this statement mean? Tom Hanks is a ham who needs to get his ego in check. His opinion does not factor into my decision. His opinion is laughable considering his massive ego. Hey Tom, why don't you go and create fire on a real deserted island? Celebrity does not equate to brilliance. It does not take much to pretend to be someone on film. Tom Hanks is a professional pretender. He does for a living what all of us have done as children. How embarrassing for Mr. Tom Hanks.

For all those folks supporting the Honorable Senator Obama, please do some digging on his relationships with Anton "Tony" Rezko (currently on trial) and his ridiculous endorsement of Todd Stroger for Cook County (illinois) (Sen. Obama's home county) Board President. You should and must judge a person by the company he keeps.

The cult of personality reigns supreme. Check Obama's web site, no specifics just "change", listen to his speeches, no specifics just change. Obama is as much a carpetbagger as Clinton. Despite never voting Republican in 50+ years on the planet, McCain is the only viable choice. Someone who has truly served his country and shown, as a POW, that he truly stands for his beliefs. Obama has followed a calculated course to become a professional politician. Work for 1 year as social activist, check; join populist church to garner community support, check. The reality is that regardless of who is elected president they will simply be the leader of the political class in this country, which lacks vision, principles, and is turning the United States into a friendly environment for multi-national businesses at the expense of the people. Those would presume to power are the very ones who should not be allowed in power..

TOO MANY VOTERS SURRENDER POWER TO STAR ENDORSEMENT

The denial is disingenuous, and the evidence is ample.

http://pacificgatepost.blogspot.com/2008/05/surrendering-power-to-star-endorsements.html

I applaud Tom Hanks for endorsing Sen. Obama. Sen. Obama has shown eloquence, consistency when being attacked by Bubba, Hil-liar, medi-us, and Rev. Wright! We cannot say the same thing for Hil-liar. At every opportunity she has tried to twist, spin, lie, exaggerate, smirk her way to the nomination. It will not work because the American people now see the TRUE face of Hil-liar. She's got so much baggage that it will take a lifetime to unload.

Democrats VOTE for Sen. Obama! We need some integrity in the White House. And, to those of you "ranting" on the blogs. Get over it, skin color is just soooooooooo yesterday... pioneer days. Don't get "STUCK" into the past. Free yourself, your heart rate will go down and so will your unnecessary "sress" level.

Pete Kusnick: And you know Tom Hanks is more honest than Cruise or Travolta how? I can only assume you've met the man and had a nice long chat. Otherwise you're getting a media image of Hanks in just the same way you are for Cruise and Travolta. You haven't the slightest clue what any of these people are actually like in real life. You only know their media image. Good luck with that.

Jeff M. Chicago wrote: "You haven't the slightest clue what any of these people are actually like in real life..."

Bravo, Jeff! You said it! How nice to see someone using their own thoughts and not being "led" or influenced by others. Regardless of who you are voting for, at least you are giving it thought!
