Minnesota Democrats have thrown their support behind comedian Al Franken in a race for U.S. Senate that will pit him against Republican incumbent Norm Coleman.

Franken, who wrote and performed for "Saturday Night Live," told Minnesotans on Saturday that he is "not a perfect person."

"I'm not going to pretend to have all the answers," he said. "But I'll tell the truth, I will keep my spine, and I will work for you."

Franken faced some criticism over a 2000 Playboy column he wrote and comments about rape included in a 1995 New York magazine article.

Franken said his 35-year career as a writer has included some things that were "downright offensive."

"I understand that the people of Minnesota deserve a senator who won't say things that make them feel uncomfortable," Franken said.

Franken had one competitor, professor Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, who has withdrawn from the race and endorsed Franken.

Franken is not the first celebrity to make a bid for a government position.

Here is a look at just a few celebrities who ran for office :

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (actor)

Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura (wrestler/actor)

Former California Rep. Sonny Bono (singer)

Former Lousiana Gov. Jimmie Davis (singer)

Former President Ronald Reagan (actor)

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson (actor)

Former New York Rep. Jack Kemp (Buffalo Bills player)

Way to go, Mr. Franken, tell the voters the truth !! Unfortunately, it isn't a guaranty to success, but at least you can live with yourself and your fellow citizens. I can only imagine what the Republicans have to tell themselves, to convince themselves that they chose the right, the legal and the democratic choice, with all of their policies, in the last 7 1/2 years, not just the Iraq war and occupation !! America, don't be fooled again, vote for those that you know and feel, are telling the truth. That is all America asks of its voters. Be concerned and be educated !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

How I would LOVE it to not only have Obama win this fall but Franken too.
Gasbag Rush would relapse on the hillbilly heroin and Bill-O would start beating himself over the head with a super sized deluxe loofah.

I feel sure if Obama can get the Democratic nomination nothing as weird as Franken getting elected will be a surprise....Only thing is...Obama will never be elected to the Presidency without HRC as his VP..Hopefully when he quits dragging his feet and posturing he will get HRC on board so they can beat McCain in November. Otherwise a vote for Obama will be a vote for McCain....Bring our Soldiers home now..They are fighting a n win war...

A razor sharp sense of humor connected to a first-rate intellect.... BRILLIANT!

al, you are an embarrassment- even to the democrat party. you will get trounced in november and can then crawl back into your hole

Great news. I only hope that his brother Otto isn't working on the campaign.

Franken will make an insightful, competitive and string candidate in the general election. His wit, comedic timing, and dry and sarcastic delivery will make him a great debater who should have no trouble winning moderate voters.

Anyone who has read a Franken book knows his penchant for thorough research will also be an asset, as he will not need to (nor will he be used to) relying on staffers and interns to prepare his notes, speeches, and most importantly, to draft rebuttals to the smear campaign the GOP will inevitably aim at him.

Let's go Al!!!

poor kaye, she just doesn't get it. hillary is poison for obama and the dnc. if she's on the obama ticket, which she won't be, people on the fence will flock to mcbush to avoid her getting back to the wh. she also voted for the war silly, pay attention.

Al is a funny, brilliant and great patriotic American! He will make a great senator. Coleman is a war-mongering dope who will get crushed in November.

The article also failed to point out all of the comedians that have occupied both shrub administrations.

J.V. Machiavelli - are you here to live up to your name? You are full of blather - that or you know nothing about the Democratic party.

Not only are most of us 'elite' only a few paychecks away from being out on the street if we lose a few weeks pay, but we've been rebuilding our party from the bottom up since our disastrous results in 2004. We've rejected the Clinton's Democratic Leadership Council party machine with our ever growing grassroots politics.
The fact that Obama is the defacto nominee alone has proven it. And in his first days he has taken steps to secure the power of that grassroots movement by having the DNC no longer accept donations from federally registered lobbyists and Political Action Committees and with Republican Sen. Cornyn put forward a bill that will demand much more transparency in how our money is spent by the federal govt.
I'm sure that Franken, if the bill is still up when he is elected, will vote yes on that.
If you're worried about Elitist op down politics why don't you go fix it on your side of the aisle. The 'Have Mores' have got you spinning like a top!

A second rate comedian, running to become a third-rate senator, for a fourth rate politcal party.

Long live the hammer and sickle.

"But how does tha effect him, Al Franken?"

ter, you're living in a state of denial. get used to the first-rate democratic party. it's here to stay for a while.

josh,

Your comments about Franken are all well and good if all you seek is someone who is all form and no substance. We don't need any more speech makers. We need people who know the front end of government from its back, and who know what to do at either end. When it comes to government, Franken is highly opinionated, but he doesn't know one of his own ends from a hole in the ground when it comes to the actual working of government. It isn't as simple as it is made to look. So, if you want more incompetent goofs in Washington (and Lord knows we have plenty already) then go ahead and support Franken with your voice, vote and money. But, be warned: If you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised if a circus breaks out.

Dear Pauly

You must be KIDDING Everyday the democ'rat'ic RICH ELITES ARE ON THE PHONE BEING BRIEFED BY OBAMA OR HILLARY SOPRANOS CAMPAIGN PEOPLE. They are the FIRST PEOPLE THAT ARE TOLD WHATS HAPPENING. They go to all the events by limo's and the dress in the best designer clothes. IF YOU WANT A PICTURE WITH OBAMA OR HILLARY SOPRANO YOU NEED TO SPENT BIG BUCK, OR PRIVATE DINNER PARTY. You are being fooled.

THE DEMOC'RAT"IC PARTY IS NOW THE PARTY OF THE RICH ELITES. MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT.

VJ Machiavelli

The reporter misses the fact that Franken is another do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do Democrat tax scofflaw, who owes thousands in back taxes.

How could a reporter ignore that?

Machiavelli? The Prince will now lecture his audience about "rich elitists" in the Democratic party? That's pretty rich, prince. How about that elitist Obama character? Who does he think he is, acting like he belongs in the race just because millions of people voted for him? Is his daddy a wealthy Ivy League ex-president like bush's daddy? No. Heck, his wife doesn't even own a single Budweiser distributor. And how about that "rich elitist" Franken guy? A former comedian is now the poster boy for the "rich elite"? He must have sold a lot more copies of "Rush is a Big Fat Idiot" than I thought possible...

John W, The clowns who started the Iraq war were supposed to be "serious people" who knew how to run a government. I guess they acquired that from all their years of experience bankrupting businesses or living on government contracts. I say send in the clown. He can't do much worse than the "serious people".

Bruce,

You really do need to read whole articles, not just the headlines. Al's tax problem was that he made money in multiple states and paid all his taxes where he lived instead of filing in each of those states. He paid taxes, but not to the right states. That is clearly wrong, but not that same as being a tax cheat.

I guess he's:

"good enough, smart enough and, gosh darnit, people like him."

But then again, your looking at a state that elected a wrestler governor and now wants a comedian senator. Keep me away from Minnesota, please.

John W.,

You mean like Dick Cheney?

Yes, Tom, Franken can do a much worse job. Don't contrast Franken with those who are currently in office. I will not defend the latter. But to say that we should send Franken to Washington simply because he can't do a "worse" job is to suggest that we should settle for someone who is mediocre, at best, to take the place of the bad. Since when is that reasonable? Since when did two wrongs make a right in politics and government?

If you are asking me whether Dick Cheney is a clown, I will decline to answer that on the ground that any comparison would be an insult to clowns. As for the possible suggestion implicit in your question, that Franken couldn't be worse then some in government, I refer you to the answer I gave Tom O, above (assuming they post it).

Franken can do a worse job? Than Coleman? Possibly. But Coleman seems like a weather vane type. He goes which ever way the wind blows. On the plus side, I guess that means he listens to his constituents...

Did anyone else notice that Machiavelli completely ignored the substance of what I said?
Nor can he refute it. Because the grassroots movement is real. I've seen more change being involved in the party in 3 years than we've seen in the last 10 because of pressure bubbling up from average the people who make things happen. Just the denial of corporate money which Obama instituted is a watershed. The Republicans would never dare go there. Their base might try to take control of the Neocon top-down strategy.
Just because you use a lot of CAPS doesn't mean you know what you're talking about. I suggest people who are interested in Obama see for themselves. Spend a few hours a month volunteering with your local Obama campaign and see how elitist it's not.

Josh:

Stuart won't need a staff to prepare notes especially since he doesn't like to pay workers' compensation for his staff... oh, there was that little tax issue too, but people as big and important as Al shouldn't be required to live by the same rules the rest of us do. Communist Party USA this is your best shot to ruin the country I love... go for it.

Tom O & Pauly

Bill has earned over 100 Million Dollars since leaving office in 2001. Since 2006 the Democ'rats' have raised OVER ONE BILLION DOLLARS.

Why don't you go to one of their fundraisers at the homes of the RICH ELITE IN NY, WASHINGTON, SAN FRAN. LA. FLORIDA, ETC

You will see the RICH ELITES< WASHINGTON INSIDERS, ETC,ETC,

What you won't see is Tom O & Pauly. Because they are not the elite. They just vote for and praise the people the elites put into power.
