Sen. Barack Obama's campaign has stirred a lot of buzz with its latest innovation, a new seal that combines elements of the actual presidential seal and Obama's logo.
Some people are poking fun at the Obama folks for this. But if you want voters to imagine your candidate as president, what better way to do that than to have him appear behind a faux presidential seal? It actually makes sense on a certain level.
And this is probably a good time to experiment with it. That way, if there's a voter backlash, the sense that Obama has gone too far, the campaign has plenty of time to throw the seal down the memory hole in the hope that it will have been forgotten by Election Day.
They may want to rethink the Latin inscription "vero possumus," however. It made me think of opossum. I don't think the campaign wants people thinking of opossum when they look at Obama.
Vero possumus essentially means "Truly we're able" which is basically "Yes, we can," the Obama campaign's slogan.
Maybe "speratus" which means "hope" would've worked better. At least it wouldn't have people thinking of opossum.

Comments
Believe me, Obama's presidency will be one that is creative and imaginative and full of people on his team who think. Something that has been lacking in the White House for the last 16 years.

What an incredible Marxist ego this idiot has.
What's next...since he doesn't like to say the Pledge of Allegiance, maybe he'll make it the [pledge] to the obama seal.
Sick...Sick...Sick.

Obama's whole campaign has been a fraud perpetrated on the American Public. Now that he sold out and has all that campaign money, do you think he'll refund the "grassroots" efforts? Democrats who made any donations can get a refund by contacting DNCMemberServices@DNC.org

Looks like Obama thinks it's "Mission Accomplished" with his pseudo Presidential seal. Is this guy for real? Who's advising him. Maybe he'd better wait for the coronation before he puts the crown on his head. This is only a stunt a rank political amateur would pull. Opossum? No, more like a skunk at the party.

Don't like the ersatz "seal".
Best not to be seen to be cocky. Don't count the possumus before they are birthed. The real seal will be there soon enough.
I'm liking the flag pin, however.

This kinda reminds me of the guy Jane Byrne appointed as head of the meter maids back in the 80's. For some reason, I think it was Alderman Farina. Anyway, he designed this wacky uniform with epaulets and gold braids and everything. He looked like Fraser Thomas on Garfield Goose. All hail, Emperor Obama- Possum King!

Paulo,
your comments about Obama being a Marxist because "he doesn't like to say the Pledge of Allegiance" is quite interesting.
"The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855-1931), a Baptist minister, a Christian Socialist, and the cousin of Socialist Utopian novelist Edward Bellamy (1850-1898)." The part about "Under God" wasn't added till 1954, and thus has very little basis as an American tradition. - see wikipedia entry on "Pledge of Allegiance."
Therefore, saying the pledge is socialist, and according to you Paulo, not saying the pledge is socialist.
Regardless of your subjective view Paolo, government coerced, blind flag worship is unconstitutional - see Minersville School District v. Gobitis (1943).
Moreover, Paolo, in America people are free to believe what they want, and the government cannot discriminate viewpoints, in the manner you'd like it to.
Therefore, Paulo, you are the unpatriotic socialist for believing that everyone must conform to your views, an ideal that you impliedly seem to want enforced by the government. Maybe that's not socialist but just fascist.

I want to keep this straight in my head, he is going to 1. buy the presidency with ads and went back on his promise to use public funding 2. wants Clinton supporters to "get over it" and whines about how he and his wife are being scrutinized 3. STILL blames the lack of love we are giving him by calling us racist and 4. now has his own seal. What a jerk.

Ok, I can't think of anything to add to the comments already on this blog. Maybe just reiterate the ego thing. The first thing I thought was what poor art work and that it really looked cheap. Like they held a contest for the Chicago area kindergartners and this was the best they could come up with. Next to the real Presidential seal it looks even cheaper and amateurish. But then I guess it is a good reflection on Obama.

We can all have an opinion...Obama is counting his chickens before they are hatched it seems. HE IS NOT AS OF YET THE PRESIDENT...He is beginning to come off somewhat too self assured and conceited to set well with lots of voters..Also some of us are getting tired of him being compared to JFK. No way. Earn it first and then we will see...Will Michelle have a seal also??They seem awfullt wrapped up in themselves....Without HRC on his ticket he will never be President anyway...

Posted by: nolan | June 20, 2008 11:00 PM
Dumb idea, the seal. I am sure the first time he saw it was when he walked into the room, and hopefully, we'll never see it again. It just gives fodder to the folks who don't like him to claim "arrogance" and "elitist" and "unpatriotic", because these folks need to generate some sort of fear and irrational hatred of this man to mobilize enough knuckleheads to have a chance to make this race even marginally competitive. So it's dumb, it's another thing for Rush Limbaugh to hang his big fat hat on.
He should have removed it as soon as he saw it, it looks ridiculous when the governors all have simple nameplates in front of them. If the governors all had their state seals in front of them, OK, maybe a tongue in cheek deal there, but there was no reason or excuse for this. But here's the deal, Obama bashers - again, not his idea, just a stupid staff level misjudgement. But go ahead, use this to make your choice for McCain, that will help you out alot, especially if you make less than $80,000 and think that you pay the right amount of taxes, and people making over $250,000 a year are paying way too much.

Dumbest thing I have ever seen, but it is not surprsing. Obama has been living in Fantasyland ever since he got into the Senate (remember Obama was losing big time to Jack Ryan, and through no action of his own, got into the Senate). As long as we're skipping down Candycane Lane with bloated talk and no experience, we might as we'll pretend we're already President. Perhaps he can paint his house white, and we all can start calling the missus 'Madam First Lady'. Please keep your unresolved daddy-approval issues to yourself and leave us alone already.

Mornin', Obama haters. Y'all been busy.
Have to wonder if Barack is being set up with ideas like that "possum seal". Bruce Dumont posited that someone at Trinity was trying to set Barack up by inviting Fr. Phleger to deliver his "homily".
Brooks' column? Some truth to it, but the real answer is: there is Barack, and then there is the Barack Campaign, aand Brooks conflates them into one thing, failing to distinguish core believes and objectives from strategy & tactics. I think Barack knows hhow to play hardball. He is, in case you didn't notice, familiar with the tough streets first hand. And he's had all the dirty tricks played on him--by the machine in Chicago (which never trusted or backed him) and of course by the Clinton machine. But don't think that because of his amazing end runs around the Dem machine in 04 and the Clinton machine in 08, that he's abandoned his roots or core beliefs. That appears to be Brooks' error.
Posted by: ornery | June 21, 2008 10:44 AM
Vincent, the "seal" is a "parody" item, not a facsimile of the real thing.

The seal is stupid. As an Obama supporter, I'm not afraid to be his biggest critic.
Posted by: DD | June 21, 2008 12:20 PM
I grabbed these salient comments from another website:
Consider all the elements on the original seal, the history and symbolism, and consider what has been changed…
1) The snake (enemy) has been removed from the eagle’s beak. We will no longer confront our enemies.
2) The eagle is not a bald eagle. This type of eagle was often prominently displayed in the crests of European countries. Even Hitler used it in his banners and artwork. Our unique symbol has been replaced with a European symbol.
3) Red, the color of blood and bravery has been erased from the field.
4) The shield, symbolizing defense, with the stripes of the thirteen colonies, united under the blue banner, is gone. It has been replaced with Obama’s own personal symbol.
5) All references to the 13 colonies… the olives, inner stars and stripes on the shield are gone. The history of thirteen independent colonies uniting as one nation, has been erased.
6) “Out of many, one” has been removed, replaced with Obama’s slogan.
7) The dark blue, the background for the stars, representing states rights has been replaced with a soft pastel blue.
8) The 50 stars, representing the 50 states, have disappeared.
So consider what has changed…
The individual states have been removed, our history erased, our symbol of power and unity neutered, and only One Government remains, with the messiah’s symbol in the center.
This isn’t a laughing matter. This is a disgusting, unholy abomination!

I'm a supporter of Barack but I'm quite disappointed with this joke of a symbol. I have to admit that to me at least and seemingly many others it comes off as arrogant and presumptive - as though winning the election is inevitable and our votes are taken for granted. Sorry Charlie - our votes have to be earned before and after the election. Nice stab at being innovative but frankly the result is idiotic and silly as Barack likes to say. I suggest to the campaign to admit this is a failed attempt and to drop it a.s.a.p.. Then get back to keeping crap like this out of the way of the candidate to voter conversation that is paramount.
To the people!

Is Obama breaking the law by displaying a seal that is similar to that of the president of the US?
"(a) Whoever knowingly displays any printed or other likeness of the great seal of the United States, or of the seals of the President or the Vice President of the United States, or the seal of the United States Senate, or the seal of the United States House of Representatives, or the seal of the United States Congress, or any facsimile thereof, in, or in connection with, any advertisement, poster, circular, book, pamphlet, or other publication, public meeting, play, motion picture, telecast, or other production, or on any building, monument, or stationery, for the purpose of conveying, or in a manner reasonably calculated to convey, a false impression of sponsorship or approval by the Government of the United States or by any department, agency, or instrumentality thereof, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both."
It depends upon your definition of "likeness", as stated in the law
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/likeness
So, are the 2 symbols alike or are they merely similar?
One is a crime. The other is not.

For years, the Republican Party has poured its vitriol and hatred at the feet of Hillary Clinton, since the end of Pres. Clinton's tenure in office the most hated and feared Democrat in the the nation. Out of seemingly nowhere came a younger senator, relatively new to the national scene, who beat the Clinton fundraising machine and out-strategized the Clinton network.Suddenly, the Republican Party is facing an adversary who is stronger than their strongest foe of old. Where is the above-borad, ethical, substantive campaign Sen. McCain promised he would run? Nowhere to be seen, with media and surrogates fixated on parsing words and symbols and gestures rather than discussing the issues where Sen. Obama would have a clear advantage.

It may be illegal under section b - "substantial portion thereof"
My first impression was "arrogant"
I find the latin humorous -- and the fact that the campaign is teaching us the meaning is "elitist" & "condesending"
"(b) Whoever, except as authorized under regulations promulgated by the President and published in the Federal Register, knowingly manufactures, reproduces, sells, or purchases for resale, either separately or appended to any article manufactured or sold, any likeness of the seals of the President or Vice President, or any substantial part thereof, except for manufacture or sale of the article for the official use of the Government of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both."

To: Posted by Save our Nation..Not sure where you found this but the results you mention are PROFOUND...Who is this person Obama and what is he really after in our Country.??All along I have asked why the media never vetted him and they still won't..The voters have every right to know ALL THE FACTS about him..Including this. If he is going to have a seal why have it detract from our Country's history..I realize he has lots of followers but surely we are not expected to accept this seal and not ask questions..Even the Real Messiah had questions asked of him..I sure hope we will not begin to see idol and statue worship here..Getting out of hand..Especially for someone that has done nothing for our Country as of yet...Maybe Obama's camp will come out with a detailed expination of this seal..I hope I have not said anything racist here as it is getting so you can't even have an opinion if it is about Obama or Michelle...Without HRC he will never win the Presidency and all of this money spent will be for nothing...

I absolutely Love the seal. It lokks futuristic presdiential. He will definitely belon behind the real thing. All of you that posted negative comments remeber this: Humanity is very critical of themselves and others. So If you are being this judgemental and critical of Barack, you are probably eing critical of yourself or your loved ones in some way.

It is a crime to do this under US law. Read the link below
"Whoever, except as authorized under regulations promulgated by the President and published in the Federal Register, knowingly manufactures, reproduces, sells, or purchases for resale, either separately or appended to any article manufactured or sold, any likeness of the seals of the President or Vice President, or any substantial part thereof, except for manufacture or sale of the article for the official use of the Government of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both."

I LOVE IT!!!! LOVE IT!!!! LOVE IT!!!! That's the creative juices that God gave to all of us, some of us do not recognize the gifts that we all have. Barack and WE THE PEOPLE have not parked their brain foods just on a plate they are utilizing all those creative juices the way that our creater wants us to use them....for the good of all and for the most benevolent outcomes. Wake up America, there is a light arising from the West. I approve of the seal and the message.

Hey, all you good sensible folks! Let's hope he does more stuff like this, shall we?
Only when the people see his true colors will they waken from their trance.
I think he should hire a band to play "Hail to the Chief" everywhere he goes, don't you?

Just turn that wind machine off right now.
The statute y'all are citing only refers to replicas of the seals covered.
Just the way the counterfieting laws only relate to "replicas" of currency, not monopoly money.
The "seal" here falls under the general rubric of parody, paraphrase, satire.
Whatever else it is, it is not a copy, reproduction, replica or anything else covered by the statute.
Otherwise, Saturday Night Live producers would be in jail for all the times they've used something similar in one of their skits.

The sign is ok by me, I'm just glad that Obama continues to talk about the issues. Let's not forget that McCain is a multimillionare, so no matter how bad he changes the economy (if he's somehow able to win), he's going to be alright. That being said, I hope that all blue collar americans whether McCain or Clinton supports meditate long on this.

It's amazing how evil we can be towards each other. If we spend as much positive energy as we spend negative energy, America would be in a much better position. Surely all of us ADULTS know that hate has a voracious appetite. Hate leads to anger, and anger leads to grossly negative and hurtful comments as evidenced in these blogs. Barack, continue to make your mark and help this country. We (america) are at a point where we no longer need to say, "God Bless America", but rather, "God Save America".

The epitome of arrogant presumptuous narcissistic self idolatry, and just plain freaking lame. I hope Obama's geniuses keep coming up with this stuff. What a bunch of buffoons!
Prediction: We will see another CHANGE when this disappears never to be seen again ... get 'em while you can ... destined to be collectors items for political hall of shame. Fire up the Tivos, there will be some classics coming from the late-night shows.

So are you saying that it's OK that Obama is making fun of the presidential seal?!! That's what a parody is.
It amazes me that many Obama supporters would agree with everything he does or says, no question asked? Where is your independent thinking brain? America deserves more than this.

The bird on the seal looks like a flattened chicken. That, I suppose, is what the U.S. will become if we elect this turkey.
Posted by: John W. | June 21, 2008 9:31 PM
This is hilarious. I hope he keeps the seal. In fact, I hope that he changes his legal name to Vero Possumus. Latin notwithstanding, the feeling that it conjures up is "Truly, We Are Opossums." Which might not be too inaccurate, given how the leftists seem to want to ignore, deny, minimize and/or appease the looming global threat of jihad, and the militant Muslims who declared war on western culture long ago. Instead of actually defeating our sworn enemy, it sounds like their defense strategy is "If America just plays dead, then maybe those pesky terrorists will leave us alone." How very apropos, then, the Possum slogan.

I'm disappointed at what comments are being let through.
Granted, I can't expect all the comments to always be on topic (although, it's amazing how little ever is in this blog), but anyone like the one saying Obama doesn't like to say "The Pledge"--I mean, it shouldn't matter either way, but it's apparently a lie that he doesn't say it anyway.
By allowing the comment through, when all coments are screened for relevance and other factors, is effectively an endorsement of the perpetuation of the lie by Tribune staffers. Further, it's incredibly offensive for people to continue spreading fiction about a democratically-chosen candidate for America. The millions of people who have voted for him, and the millions of others who support him (whether having favored another Democratic candidate or simply not having voted in the primaries) are not stupid and have made a choice.
If we actually focused on the issues and compared the candidates by the issues and what they represent, this would be a whole different debate. Instead, there's a lot of fiction and a lot of fear-mongering going around, and not a lot of intelligent debate.

Do you promise this will go down the rabbit hole by November?
Doesn't this just feed right into his reputation for being arrogant and elitist?

Barack's Seal is pure cheeseball, pretentious, and juvenile. Will SNL jump all over this? I doubt it. With that seal it would be fitting for BHO to wear a Burger King crown when he is at the podium

As an Illinois citizen, I deeply regret my vote for Obama for either state senator or U.S. Senator. I did not vote for him in the primary because by that time I had done my due diligence and came to the alarming and somewhat personally embarassing decision that I was supporting a candidate who did not meet the barest minimum standards to run for president. I removed myself from his email list and shifted my support to Senator Clinton. I think the rest of the true blue Democrats in Illinois should really look at his record, read his books, and recognize that he created a myth about himself, he has abandoned pieces of the myth when no longer politically advantageous to him, and now his policy positions are being thrown under the bus as well. He is not what he says he is, and this logo makes him look even more like Howdy Doody. Did you see him sitting at the table with this foreign policy advisors? He looked like a kid at Thanksgiving sitting with the grown-ups.
We need to stand up and take our votes back by either writing in Hillary, skipping the top of the ticket (undervoting), or holding our nose and voting Republican.
I am dumbfounded that the DNC manipulated their rules to give this unqualified person such an aggregious advantage, virtually handing him the nomination.
They will not get another center from me, and I will never vote for him because of his gross lack of experience and because after all this time, I still have no idea what he REALLY believes and what he REALLY will do if elected. So far, he has a great track record for throwing positions and people under the bus when they no longer meet his needs.

This is Obama's Dukakis moment. The only other time I have seen anything so politically stupid was when another idiotic candidate (Michael Dukakis) went joy-riding in a tank. And I hope it will have the same result: Dooming his chances to ever become Commander-in-Chief.
Posted by: Alan Huber | June 22, 2008 1:07 PM
Just remember that America loves to put you up and then kick you down...LMAO!
My ESPN inside source said that the starting quarterback job could be coming to an end and the DNC could be looking at the backup who finish strong in the primary...lol.

Yes, Arugula tossed with a balsamic vinagrette goes well with pressed chicken.
I'm not exactly sure, but I think the hors d'oeuvres picks clutched in the other claw signifiy olives in martinis, as in "In martinis we trust".

Can someone please tell me this didn't really happen? I'm a big Obama supporter, but this seems incredibly stupid to me. I'd tell him to go back to the simple "Change" placard, and when he's president, maybe we can talk about the seal (but I hope we'll be focused on bigger issues).
Posted by: Arlorant | June 22, 2008 5:46 PM
Lets go ahead and change the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor while we are at it. As a Mother of a son who will be leaving for Boot Camp next week, just who the heck does Obama think he is to make a mockery of the Official seal for the President of the United States? I am not a republican but a republican will get my vote this time. I am also married to a man of color and have a mixed son. When I say I can't stand Obama I get comments all of the time that I don't like him because he's black. I could care less what color he is. He is a fool and a very IGNORANT one at that.

I just love his seal ... I plan to print the photo and distribute it near military bases in Virginia and at government offices in and around Arlington and the Pentagon.

I was willing to take an honest look at Mr. Obama, though I lean right on economics, fiscal and foreign policy and he has already demonstrated some lefty (socialist?) tendencies and seems to think judges should "feel" and “empathize" when by definition they should fairly interpret and apply the law. Whatever they "feel" about the outcome who it helps or hurts. Regardless, this is just pushed me out of his column and over to McCain for sure. This displays a lack of respect for our histories and traditions and a fair amount of arrogance. America was founded as the land where the states exists to stay out of the individuals way, we are still the only state so constituted, this is why our constitution states what congress "cannot" do and ever other states what the people "can" do. This is a key distinction and we have been losing sight of this for years. Barracks lack of respect for our traditions demonstrates a lack of understanding of the fundamental meaning of the country. The US is not a place on a map, or a race or color of people; it is an idea, of free people pursuing their own desires. Not movementarians following the messiah. Read the federalist papers, (written by the founders for those who went to a bad school) they explain the founders’ intent to protect us from ourselves, from charismatic populists and the inevitable encroachment of the nanny state.

Possumus should make people think in terms of possibility since thats what it means. The Obama staff has always used a round O symbol and this sign was likely devised by his staff appropriate to the Mayor's conference. Obama has not changed the offical presidential seal! This is just another campaign sign. Jeez!

I'm in advertising and you don't change a logo. The presidential seal is one of our governments logos. To change a logo shows lack of respect for the company (or government) it represents. This man is pathetic. Why doesn't he just put his picture on the American flag?
Posted by: Linda | June 23, 2008 8:25 AM

Are you out of your mind? we are not talking about any old citizen right now, we are speaking about someone who will be the President of our country, protector of our freedom, commander in chief. If he is to have these titles, should he be someone who does not pledge allegiance the Flag that represents our country? If you dont want to fine, If I dont want to fine, but there is something wrong with a presidential candidate that wont. Obama is no good for this country, he is the same as the other politicians, saying whatever he thinks you want to hear to get your vote then when he is in office see if there is "Change we can believe in" the only change I have seen so far is his change of mind when he gets backlash in the polls for things he says. The guy was a member of a church for twenty years that the american people have seen tape of acting in an irrational and racist anti american manner, and he claims ignorance and half the country sees that as believable or they are just as stupid as he needs you to be to get into office. open your eyes jimmy, before you vote for this idiot.

Change is great … if you agree with the change.
Home owner “A” would love to change the zoning on their property to be able to build a bigger home. But the person next door “B” would be upset that the new rules will destroy B’s view from their home. If the zoning changes so that B could have band practice all night long, person A would be upset.
Obama seems to think that changing an American tradition to remove the flag from the presidential seal is a good change. Many may think this is freedom of speech and bringing the American people to a new realization. However, most people will find it an insult to their national pride.
My question to those that agree with random, sudden, and dictatorship type change is how will you feel when the change takes away something you care about?
