Here's a person who doesn't think the newly-infamous New Yorker cover is a big deal: Barack Obama.
In an interview with CNN's Larry King, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president said he had "seen and heard worse" than the cartoon which depicted him and his wife as militant radicals.
"It's a cartoon ... and that's why we've got the First Amendment," Obama said. "And I think the American people are probably spending a little more time worrying about what's happening with the banking system and the housing market and what's happening in Iraq and Afghanistan, than a cartoon. So I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about it."
However, Obama said he believes the cover likely fueled misconceptions about him. "But, you know, that was their editorial judgment," he added.
The cover shows a caricature of Obama as a Muslim, standing in the Oval Office with a U.S. flag burning in the fireplace and a painting of Osama bin Laden hanging on the wall. Obama is giving a fist bump to his wife, who is pictured with an Afro hairstyle, wearing military fatigues with a rifle slung over her shoulder.
New Yorker editor David Remnick told ABC News the cover intends to "satirize the vicious and racist attacks and rumors and misconceptions about the Obamas that have been floating around in the blogosphere and are reflected in public opinion polls."
Read more about the Obama/New Yorker cover in today's Chicago Tribune and at Top of the Ticket, the Los Angeles Times' political blog.

There's that Irish saying, "situation hopeless, but not serious".
Tasteless, elitist cartoon from "the best magazine that ever was." Make that past tense.
Now, let's put McCain and Vicki on the cover.

Maybe this cover flap will blow over. But I can't help but imagine that swing voters in Middle America are filing that dreaded image away to remember in the fall.

I work at a bookstore. Not a week has gone by without at least one fabulous magazine cover of Obama, two recently on Rolling Stone. This week's Newsweek has Barak with his eyes closed in prayer! The Esquire and Vanity Fair and Ebony, and dozen of other covers have featured an incredible charismatic Obama. The other day I saw the cover of the American Scholar with a PHOTO of Obama on the cover, rare indeed. I think that the New Yorker was also making a little jab at the magazine publishing industry that has made quite a lot of money on Barack Obama's charming face. By the way, that New Yorker, sold out in less than 24 hours.

I have begun to believe that all of this Muslim nonsense surrouding Obama has been caused by Obama himself. I believe he caused it by writing his biography.

The first criterion for satire to be humorous is to have at least a grain of truth in the depiction. Showing McCain as a Muslim would be seen immediately as ludicrous. Obama, with a Muslim father and brother, has enough of a connection to give a cartoonist a start. Of course, cartoonists did not need a rationale to depict Bush as a chimpanzee. Curious. I never heard him or the media complain.

Of course, NOW he thinks it's no big deal. That's because he realizes he looked like a doofus by his campaign kicking up such a fuss, and that he simply reinforced the negative.
I'm sure it's too much to hope for that Larry King said, "hmmm, not what you said 48 hours ago!"
Once again, changing his opinion!

Although it was obviously satire and I know the New Yorker is a left-leaning publication, there are more than enough dimwits out there (people who might as well greet people with "Hello, I don't have a brain") that will believe that kind of image is a real depiction. I heard about some survey that said some 28% of people still think Obama is a Muslim, about 35% who still think he was educated in Muslim schools and 12% believing he took his Senatorial oath of office on the Koran. When you consider that even ignorant yahoos get to vote, it might not have been the best idea to publish that image. But it'll blow over, much to the chagrin of Fox "News" and the rest of the haters out there. Personally, I thought it was funny.

The cartoon was technically flawed. Like an essay or an advertisement, a cartoon must know its audience and clarify its objective. Those two things are hard to do with satire, since you're portraying the opposite of what you really mean. The New Yorker is usually proficient at that, but failed this time.
Had the cover's image been depicted as a poster hanging on the wall of Rush Limbaugh's radio studio, it would have been both pointed and funny. But the New Yorker editors let is run as is, with the subject and audience confused, and the satirized target missing altogether!

The Dems don't have to pin their hopes on people believeing desperate political smear jobs like the kind the Rethuglicans are trying to use against President Obama.
All the Dems have to do is tell the truth about John McBush and that should be enough to scare the crap out of everyone.

Repeat after me (very slowly now):
SATIRE
DOES NOT HAVE TO BE
NOR DOES IT HAVE TO INTEND TO BE
HUMOROUS
Satire =/= humor
that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of funny satires. That doesn't mean humor can't be a byproduct of a satire. But the primary purpose of satire isn't humor and the instrumentality of satire isn't humor.

The only people that will vote for him now are idiots.

First Obama was upset and today he is downplaying the cover of The New Yorker!! Whats to downplay Obama did not wear a flag pin. That's why the flag is burning in the fire place. Obama's name is close to Osama's and they are both Muslim's That explains to painting. Obama is a Muslim from birth and his father is from Kenya, that exlains the outfit. Michelle's comment, first the first time in her life she is proud to be an American earned her the outfit she is wearing. The night Obama announced himself as winning of the primary Obama and Michelle walked up to each other and connected fists, as in yes we won! The cover of the New Yorker shows the Obama's for who they really are, there is no way Obama can downplay this!!! The cover is great!!!!!!!!!!

The next cover is going to be Obama riding around a Nascar track in a Tank with a "SEAL" on the side saying I am the Commander in Chief in Latin, and dragging Bill and Jesse on the ground

The poster who said that Obama brought up the Muslim info in his two biographical books was correct. Obama said that he went to Muslim school for a few years. "The Audacity of Hope", page 204.
He started it. He wrote about it. His family dressed him up in the garb for pictures. I assume he wasn't awake and alert when that happened.
Of course he can't object too much to the many images on that cover that he identified himself. Friendship, political associations, and working relationship with terrorist Bill Ayers, well that would explain the flag in the flames. Much like the picture of bomb throwing Bill Ayers standing on the American flag crumpled at his feet.
No one has brought anything out about Obama, that Obama didn't bring out himself.
He is who he is, not who he presents himself to be in these days of trying to acquire votes.
That blank slate thing only works so long before people pick up on what it really means.
Blank slate = candidate for sale or already bought and paid for. We do know who is really paying the bills. Not those $5 donors they like to bring up.
In fact, I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the $5 donors have left Obama in their dust and gone over to the other side.
Funny thing is, I thought Obama was okay to be President myself, until I started doing my own research. Then, I was appalled that somehow the DNC was pushing this man through as their candidate. What were they thinking?
If they really wanted to make Obama President, then they would have required him to establish himself. Learn a few things that were not taught to him by Soros, and Rezo, and Ayers, and his other socialist/Marxist friends.
Nope DNC bought themselves a chameleon and hoped it would work.
Candidate for change? You bet. He can change his mind, his beliefs, his policy, his friends and anything else it takes to get to be president.

Why doesn't the Tribune report on the article INSIDE the New Yorker? This is a wonderful piece about Obama's early career in Chicago. It is 15 pages long and very well researched by the author and very well written. People are longing for more information about this newcomer who wants to be President, and there is so much information in this article about Obama that needs to be told to the public. Tribune, PLEASE report on this article! Yes, it is lengthy, but I would urge anyone who wants to make an informed decision in this election to please read it!

On page 154 of "Dreams From My Father," Obama writes: "In Indonesia, I had spent two years at a Muslim school, two years at a Catholic school. In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell my mother that I made faces during the Koranic studies."
Now the official line is that Obama never attended a Muslim school. So who are you going to believe...Obama or Obama?

If the DNC was not afraid of their candidate they would address the issues that concern the public who are truly concerned, not the $5 donors who are in AWE of this "Man of Change." They should address the Ayers, Rezko, Wright, and all of his other questionable associates and put all of this too rest. He has so many image problems, why isn't Oprah openly supporting him during this campaign? I voted for him in Fl,however, since so many hidden things have come out about him, I am not sure if I could vote for him now. Race is not an issue for me and I am not swayed one bit about the cover of the NEW YORKER, he does not seem to be honest and the DNC is not being honest with us either. He has changed since he first appeared on the scene and it is frightening and the alternative is just as frightening. He is the typical politician he promised us he was not and our country is in a mess at this time so it is disturbing to beleive anything he says at this time.

Practically every day I see Obama's ad on television that mentions he worked his way through college. Does anyone know if that is true and, if so, the name of the place(s) that would pay enough to cover his college tuition?

The cover isn't a cartoon,It's a joke just like Obama,he's nothing but a joke that has gotten out of hand. Got help us if someone like him slips into the most powerful office in the world.

The cover summed up many of the right wing smears thrown at Obama. Now when people hear these smears they will think about the New Yorker Magazine cover. When they see the cover they will understand they will reminded of the rightwings difficult relationship with the truth. Rightwingers have had a huge credibililty problem since the Enron scandal, and tales of WMD's.

NEW YORK TIMES HATE-BAIT LEADERS ATTACK OBAMA, THE LEADING PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE OF THE AMERICA PEOPLE
The notorious systematic "anti-Semitic" baiting, "racist" baiting, "Muslim" baiting, and "extremist" baiting; the standard Podhoretz Neo-Con and Leiberman Neo-Lib hate-baiting tactic in the American Cultural War, does more damage to the treacherous reputations of these Crypto- Neo-Marxists than to the trustworthy reputations of Obama and his supporters. Obama is known throughout the World to have earned broad support among Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Humanists of all races. Such desperate attempts at the intimidation and slander of Obama, by these hate-baiters, shall be severely punished by the American People in the course of the Cultural War.

If Obama had said this from the beginning -- instead of allowing his campaign to attack an editorial cartoon as "tasteless and offensive," thereby signaling the legions of acolytes to assail the New Yorker – this would have been a tempest in a teapot.
But now, Obama must fight another caricature - one in which he is depicted as a humorless messianic figure whose cultist followers will assail anyone who dares poke fun at their Beloved Leader. This caricature will be a little harder to shake, methinks, thanks to his supporters who still don't get it.

I bet there is not one person who has posted any blogs on this topic , who has not had some sort of issue that may cause someone to question why they do what they do. Glass house throwin rocks. Please , get over it geeks. His education tops all of those who have posted all of these negative things about him. He may not be perfect , but the current president is better? Oh, McBush is better, please!

I'm an Obama supporter and I thought the cover was funny. I loved it - it really captured how terrified some people are of black people. The only argument I hear against the cover is that people are too stupid to get the joke. Those people aren't going to vote for Obama, anyway.

NEW YORK TIMES MAKES FOOLS OUT OF CONSERVATIVES AND LIBERALS
New York Times, New York Post, Boston Globe and many other newspapers are owned and staffed by Neo-Cons and Neo-Libs who are desperately in collusion to elect McCain; their Neo-Marxist cunning in coordinating their defenses of McCain and their slanderous attacks on Obama makes fools out of millions of Reagan Conservatives and Kennedy Liberals.
