The Swamp

by Mike Dorning

While the campaign is keeping the dates of its international trip a tightly guarded secret, details are beginning to leak out of foreign capitals.

The Obama campaign announced late last month that the candidate would travel to Israel and Jordan in the Middle East and Britain, France and Germany in Europe. The campaign had already disclosed plans to travel to Iraq and Afghanistan, though it has left unclear whether the trip to the war zones will be included in the same international trip.

Reports in foreign media now suggest the trip is scheduled for late July.

The French news agency Agence France-Press reports that French President Nicolas Sarkozy will meet with Obama at the Elysee Palace on Friday July 25.

In Israel, Obama is expected to arrive on Tuesday July 22 or Wednesday July 23 for a two- or three-day visit to include a meeting with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, which cited a report in the Israeli newspaper Yediot Achronot.

The German magazine Der Spiegel reports that the Obama campaign is considering a major speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the site of a famous Ronald Reagan speech in 1987 in which the former president challenged then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down that wall." A large new U.S. embassy opened there on July 4.

Der Spiegel also reports that Obama is considering meetings with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

he's going to walk across the Atlantic, right?

I hope he tells the people of Israel that he really didn't mean the city of Jerusalem should remain in Israeli control when he said the city should never be divided. I want to see how well this guy's BS goes over in a place where the inhabitants aren't easily charmed by a silver tongue.

Jeff, After the past eight years of bs from Dubya, you should not concern yourself that Barack will embarrass you. He has already been able to admit when he errs, something the chimp has never been able to do.

yes, jeff, McBush is definitely not selling any BS. He hasn't flip-flopped at all. Heck, he was against tax cuts, before he was for them, before he was against them...I guess if you flip-flop twice on one topic it doesn't count?

People like what Obama has to say because he seems to genuinely believe the ideas behind the words...McCain, no longer his old self, seems to just say what the press and republicans want to hear.

I wonder if the press will show the fanfare with which Obama is greeted on his visit??? I have family in Amsterdam & Kaastle Germany, & they tell me all of Europe is praying for an Obama Presidency...

I get such a kick out of watching you haters. After 8 years of major BS from a president who never meant a word he promised and a wanna be (McCain) who will lie, steal, or cheat his way to the top, you've got the nerve to talk about Obama being glib? Believe me, change is coming whether the small majority wants it or not. It's coming and so help the people, it is more than about time.

After the worst administration the US has ever had , I will be proud to have an intelligent, articulate man represent America!

Hey MJ, I heard he's also going to turn water into wine while he's there. That speech in front of the Brandenberg gate is more evidence of what an egomaniac this guy is. Kennedy and Reagan did that *after* they won the election. God help us all.

In five months, people like Jeff will be irrelevant.

I can guarantee that Obama will be embraced with open arms by the peoples of every nation he visits. The world wants Obama to win. A McCain win means another four years of the worst foreign policy in our country's history.

President Bush's two terms will come to an end and the Palestinian State is still a dream - not come true. The American politicians only talk , talk and talk. No one can deliver the state. To some extent the Palestinians are also to blame for the stalemate. But the bottom line is that Palestinian State should have been a reality few years back. Obama is going to Israel. Will he also visit Palestine ? Will he do anything different that no other American politician has done ? It all remains to be seen.

This "guy" will be the next President, he doesn't walk on water, and based on what we've seen from little Georgie...how could he possibly be any worse?

Have either of you lived in America over the past 7 plus years???

It's going to be some of the greatest political theatre you will ever see. The reaction by Europeans especially will be overwhelming, dwarfing that of any politician of the last 50 years save JFK.

Barack, I love ya dearly, mein candidate, but do get elected first...

They (israelis) need to hear the truth from someone, sometime. For America, to be biased for israel is actually counter-productive, israel needs a neutral facilitator for peace with the palestinian nation. and until the three basic problems are not addressed (1. jerusalem, 2. refugees, 3. contiguity) and resolved, there simply will be no piece. it is time for israel to come out of the "perpetual panic" closet and face reality as well as history. and it is time for the palestinian nation to be what they choose to be; while at the same time facing reality and history.
Obama might just be the president who get's it right on Israel, someone who does'nt use the same old clieches with-in the same old frames that politicians use to "talk" about these issues. It turns out that policy is a lot easier when you don't have to always lie about it because the true effects of it are not desired by humans.

finally, a president who won't embarrass us overseas. how refreshing.

he won't need to walk across the Atlantic. it will part for him.

I think he will come across quite well in Europe where intelligence and knoweldge are valued. Most Europeans I know would love to see him as our President. What a welcome change from th idiocy of George Bush..

Regarding Jeff -- Thinking people know that there is usually intelligence behind eloquence. That's why the Dunce-in-Chief is so tongue-tied.

Hey, blog people...what's the point of "comments" if it takes you hours to vet what is said before posting...or never posting???

You DO understand the central premise of "comments"...right?

Duh.

Witness what it's like when a united state president (soon to be) is actually respected in the world. You all can slump around with McShame after his concession speech in November.

I think posting the dates when he will be in certain places in advance is dangerous for him. I also think this trip will be wonderful for the US

I think this is good, we need someone to help repair the RepugliKKKan damage and poor reputation of the US around the world.

Good thing McCain is not going to Germany, since he thinks Vladimir Putin is their "President".

Obama speaks the truth. Listen to his words for yourself.

By the way, how would you describe your current president's tongue, forked?

As far as Obama walking on water, one can only hope considering the recent bumper sticker I saw: SATAN/CHENEY '08

BS? would not BS be telling the American public a lie to rush them to war, costing thousands of US deaths and in the end trillions of dollars? Is not BS bailing out the ones that caused this housing crash but not helping those that really got screwed? You will be surprised how well the meeting goes over there. And i would expect for Obama to fly over the Alantic in a plane unless you think he is Jesus lol

Will he be wearing a crown or is this just dress casual? This guy is such a joke. Eight years of "the Decider" and now possibly 4 years of "the One". And Grandpa McCain is in South America. Give me a break. Are these two really the best we can do?

MJ and Jeff

Bite Me. get used to the good that will come when Barack Hussein Obama is your president. you're welcome.

His reception overseas should tell everyone where the hopes of the world lie. Can't wait!

It would be a coup if he could work out a peace deal while he's there.

And what exactly does Isreal do for us? They had better not look a gift horse in the mouth. We have other allies besides Isreal!

There are Obama support groups all over the world. In an International poll of nearly 30,000 people from 22 countries, people chose Obama more than three times as often as McCain because they believe that he will restore American ideals and thus make life better for the world after eight years of a bully. The bonus for America is an immediate upsurge in world opinion which has been abysmal under Bush. America may be amazed at the reception the world offers Obama when he travels. Check the side bar at this site for comments from people in 40 countries:

Obama needs to get a head start on visiting foreign leaders to begin repairing all the damage that Bush and the rest of the Republican leadership has done to America's image overseas.

I wish he'd gone to Ireland first. He could joke about his Irish heritage (O'Bama) and the Irish would have given him frighteningly large crowds, that the rest of the Europeans would then duplicate.

The ovation Obama gets over there will be even bigger then the ones he gets over here. The world is hungry for the United States to be run by sensible people with sensible minds, instead of the Neocon train wreck dreamed up insomeone's basement that's done nothing but destroy lives and treasure.

Gosh, a president with a 'silver tongue'.
God forbid we have an articulate leader who can inspire people. Since when is the ability to give amazing speeches a quality that people find undesirable? Obama will give people throughout the world a renewed confidence in the United States.

I hope he doesn't. it's their control, it should remain in their control. you don't hear mexico telling us to give back texas.

What can Obama realy do for the people of America,?
He will only be allowed to make changes in accordance with the puppet masters
My opinion is that the real power that controls Americas policies ( the powers behind the throne) lays deep within their layers, while controlling every aspect of American power
I would cautiously say it is almost impossible that they could be dragged into the common day of light for all to see
Remember these lines “Give me control of the economics of a Country; and I care not who makes her laws” ………………………………… Amsel Rothschield

Obama is going to be received like a hero, great photo ops, etc, etc,

VJ Machiavelli
http://www.vjmachiavelli.blogspot.com
ps Obama is the Neville Chamberlain of the Democ"rat"ic Party, and that is "CHANGE" for the worst.

Jeff, are you kidding me?

The Europeans see Obama clearly for what he is - America's best chance to restore our once-honorable reputation in the world. He will be greeted as a hero.

Well, your emails don't work. It rejected valid email addresses, then demanded text in a message (xxx sufficed) and would not accept the security letters. No matter how many times I entered them exactly.
This is one Chicagoan living in London who will not waster her time again using your article emails.

Only Bush walks on water, I hear.

i love it. you guys would spit in the face of anybody who wants to better our dire political situation. hang on a sec, you're not even worth writing about. goodbye

Believe me, the whole world will rejoice when Obama becomes President. An American President will be lionized again wherever he goes. America will stand proud again among the family of nations.

Did you know that a lot of Americans living overseas apologized to their hosts when Bush was reelected?

Bottom line, McCain embarrasses US here. Can you imagine him overseas? McCain consistantly needs assistance --- wherever he goes. With status of this economy, it's a shame that there are still those who would vote for McCain simply because of Party loyalty. Tha sadness of it all is most are associated with families who are struggling ---- and yet their selfishness won't allow them to help. They'd rather help McCain than to make certain that their neighbors don't lose their homes, jobs, or dignity.

Maybe at least one of those nations whose people love Obama will talk him into staying and running their country.

I'm tired of these staged-legacy-moment-make-sure-the-media-is invited events. It's the old I must milk this venue dry. It is not symbolic of anything in my speech. It's just a stepping stone into the WH. You the public hear nice words, I the public figure hear the sound of the dog on the White House lawn I bought my girls.. I am all for him visiting other countries. I am all for him making speeches there, and speaking to other leaders/people. I am all for any candidate in the running doing so. The choice of that Berlin site is obvious, and, good intending words or nice high-hifalutin words, it just makes it look like a man who's on the search for a limelight. Trying too hard. Man you don't need a psychic to channel the first 40 presidents of the United States....(sorry Cater, over the hill is not in vogue, I hear, so you are as good as not here) you can just go see Obama channel them with mood set and lighting. Today JFK MLK tomorrow Lincoln Reagan Roosevelt ect ...(Ofcourse without having to make clear sense of his stances on Iraq time tables, FISA, or abortion now. All swept under the old if it gets you ahead over the "far worse" competition it doesn't matter---that you are starting to sound more like the "far worse" competition. Irony.) Until recently his psychic channeling was annoying but now--as a candidate, not yet president, not in PA but Germany-- If he choses this venue in Germany it is obvious what he will do with it, and it totally turns me off. My personal feelings. Turns me off as much as this new invogue idea of everybody flocking around The Cold War to solve today's problems. On the political spectrum right of the right trying to make the other more wrong. I thought that Condalezza Rice was a dinosaur with her Russian expertise that didn't come in handy. Man, she might want to stick around. Who knows where we will be with the political dialog stuck between Vietnam and Cold War apologies. Her expertise might finally come in handy. Rice for President 2012. Yeay. Three words. Neocons. Setup. Victory. I hope that between the size of Denver's INVESCO Field and symbolism of possibly Berlin "tear down that wall" place Obama has time to spend on clarifying FISA and abortion if not Iraq's (time tables). For a person who has stood so solid on a speech for so long, matters of "principle," I'd like to hear more about how it all works out.

I will be there,in London, just to catch the glimpse of O'Bama... Let's hope, america won't make the same mistake as they did by electing GWB who is simply an idiot being reflected in McCain.

We Europeans will welcome Mr. Obama with open arms. The latest polls in The Netherlands shows he's favored to McCain 86 to 14. In Germany 81 to 19, France 83 to 17, Britain 78 to 22.
Just for the heck of it I did a poll among my friends and family on Bush and the Bush administration. Among 93 people I asked - left, right and center - I couldn't find anyone in favor. The Iraq war and the self centered reason to start it (oil) was of course one of the major issues, but words used to describe the 'Bush persona' ranged from 'dumb', 'clueless' and 'liar' to 'major disaster' and 'idiot'. Considering his performance on the trail, most of the people I asked don't trust McCain (the rest didn't really know him or his stance on issues very well) and a lot of them feel his presidency could be even worse than Bush because of his attitude and background.
Out of curiosity I took the Electoral Compass USA test some magazines run over here (http://www.kieskompas-usa.nl/v/elsevier). I think tests like these should be standard on any media website in the USA. Least thing such a test does is provide a way to choose on the issues instead of party or person. The outcome can be quite surprising.

Anyways, Berlin is about 350 miles from my hometown. I've already checked the train schedule...

I don't think Obama should be compared to JFK. He had some good ideas, but on a personal level I don't think he deserved the praise he received (a womanizer). As a matter of fact it seems like the people in that circle all played everywhere they went. And the next 18 yrs politically were pure chaos; Vietnam, Race riots, the emergence of the drug culture and Reagan was the first Pres with ideas that raised the country again. McCain should be the next President.

Hey, writing on walls @ 10:14 a.m.,

We are predicting the same thing in the Odyssey of the great Obama to the Federal Republic of Germany. (My inital post did not get posted for some reason). The great Obama will be Reaganesque, not at all Cartertilian. Give him credit for making that recognition.

In his crafted speech, the great Obama will make it seem like he would have done the same things as Reagan in destroying the Berlin Wall, or he advised Reagan to bring pressure to destroy the wall, or he IS Reagan AND he is JFK too, as the situation demands. Yeaaaaaaaa, all hail the great Obama. ' We Are Who We Have Been Waiting For ' , or something like that.

I would wager something of equal value for a ChiSox cap that I will be right. democrats just have a high degree of predictability.

It will be wonderful to be represented by a leader that we can be proud of. Obama is intelligent, insightful, charismatic and caring. This trip will be a start to repairing our image in the world. We have become a laughing stock - Bush an object of scorn- with good reason. Obama's visit will start the restoration of respect for the US and the American people.

Even though Obama is indeed very popular over here, don't be too surprise if he doesn't get huuuuge crowd welcoming him... It is said that a strong support for Obama by Europeans would not especially help him in the US, quite the contrary could happen.
How can he use a sentence like "The French like me you know !" ?? ;) (and a lot of us do that's for sure)

so is he comming to London on the 18th, or is that a damn secrect to tell?

From Leon Panetta's walnut trees to Barack Obama's nuts; from 9-11 to the price of gasoline at the pump; from illegal immigration to the mortgage meltdown; from the Central Coast to the Gold Coast; it’s all politics, American style. Don’t ask why; ask instead why not? Lets take the show on the road: http://theseedsof9-11.com

What about Italy??

G8 member, 9.000 soldiers in peace-keeping missions around the world (Balcans, Africa), 3.000 in Afghanistan where it lead the ISAF mission from 2005 to 2006, major contributor to UN budget, large economy, seat of Catholic church... why Obama didn't plan to visit Italy?

This is a big mistake!

Ron S. warns: "In five months, people like Jeff will be irrelevant."

Ah, so this is the sort of revenge-democracy that we can expect in the Obama-Nation when the candidate-select takes the oath of office. Is the motto of this "uniter" going to be, "If you weren't for us, you're against us."

Ironically. Obama's campaign is the Bush administration's most successful faith-based initiative, and God help you if you don't share in their conviction that his is the change to believe in. And we all thought that current crew were secretive, paranoid, self-righteous.

I have little doubt that David Plouffe and company already have their lists of enemies, of "persons of interest," and, yes, of the irrelevant. Let the purges begin!

The emperor is dead, long live the emperor!

Who cares who the Europeans prefer ... if it was up to France, our next President would be Jerry Lewis. How about focusing on who has the experience, judgement and character to protect us and bring prosperity to Americans ... not someone who in the eleventh hour, finally tries to establish foreign policy credentials, in a one week visit, as a transparent political ploy to get himself elected. Where was Obama, when he was supposed to chair the congressional committee on Afghanistan, and never had a single meeting. Why did Obama vote 'present' over 100 times in the senate? Even if he manages a political rally in the Roman Coliseum, he's still just an inexperienced politician, who is not qualified to be President of the United States of America !!!

Jules??????? Are you serious? What does Israel do for US?

It's been a two way relationship. I suggest you read up on what Isarael has done for America. And continues to do.
