Tony Snow was much bigger than the post he held.
When he spoke from the West Wing podium of the White House, he was not only speaking for the president of the United States, but also speaking for himself. Some called the president's press secretary argumentative. He didn't lose many arguments. And he reveled in the intellectual combat of his assignment.
When Snow left that post in September to confront a recurring cancer that he had battled before joining President Bush's staff 17 months before, he departed with an unbowed optimism about his life ahead, his writing, his hopes of helping others confront their cancers. He returned, albeit briefly, to the television commentary in which he had made his name.
Snow called that stint as press secretary "the most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I'm ever going to have."
And today, Tony Snow, father of three and a friend to all crossed his path, passed away. He was 53.
It's the president who is doing the talking today, for not only himself, but also his father, whom Snow also served.
"America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character,'' Bush said in a statement released this morning from Camp David.
"Tony was one of our nation's finest writers and commentators,'' the president said. "He earned a loyal following with incisive radio and television broadcasts.
"He was a gifted speechwriter who served in my father's administration. And I was thrilled when he agreed to return to the White House to serve as my press secretary. It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work. His colleagues will cherish memories of his energetic personality and relentless good humor.''
Snow was a seasoned journalist who had worked at newspapers as an editorial writer -- a decidedly conservative voice who had even criticized the president before going to work for him. He served as the first host of the television news program Fox News Sunday, from 1996 to 2003.
He was providing commentary for the Fox News Channel and Fox News Radio when the White House called on him to replace Scott McClellan as press secretary. This was a change-up for a White House in need of a shake-up. Following in the footsteps of a cautious spokesman who often found himself on the defensive at the podium in an administration with declining fortunes, Snow seized the offensive, speaking with a personal license that displayed no fear of admonishment by his bosses.
He not only spoke for the White House in Washington, but also traveled the country, appearing at fundraisers for the party.
And he was camera-ready, a fashion-minded good-looking guy who could also play a mean flute with his garage band and packed a few guitars.
Indeed, he had survived colon cancer when he came to the White House. How bad could a press briefing be?
In 2005, doctors had removed his colon and he underwent six months of chemotherapy. Then, while working at the White House, a cancerous growth was removed from his abdomen in March 2007. He spent five weeks recuperating and returned to work.
When he stepped aside in September, his cancer had spread to his liver and he had undergone more treatment, but he did not blame his health for leaving. Rather, he cited his need to earn more than the $168,000 a year he was making as press secretary. He joined a speaking circuit and in April joined CNN as a commentator.
Snow, who was raised in Cincinnati, had a bachelor's degree from Davidson College and studied economics and philosophy at the University of Chicago.
He wrote editorials for The Greensboro (N.C.) Record, and The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, and served as editorial page editor of The Newport News (Va.) Daily Press and deputy editorial page editor of The Detroit News before moving to Washington in 1987 to become editorial page editor of The Washington Times.
He left the editorial pages in 1991 to join President George H.W. Bush as director of speechwriting and deputy assistant to the president for media affairs. He returned to journalism to write nationally syndicated columns for The Detroit News and USA Today during much of the Clinton administration.
Robert Anthony Snow was born June 1, 1955, in Berea, Ky., Survivors include his wife, Jill Ellen Walker, and his three children. Kendall, Robbie, and Kristi.
"All of us here at the White House will miss Tony, as will the millions of Americans he inspired with his brave struggle against cancer,'' President Bush said today. "One of the things that sustained Tony Snow was his faith - and Laura and I join people across our country in praying that this good man has now found comfort in the arms of his creator.''

Wow, didn't realize it was that bad. As a democrat, let me say you showed wonderful class and humor. As well as tremendous courage in your struggle with this disease. RIP Mr. Snow. May God give you rest and comfort to your family.

I wish that Mr. Snow rests in peace. But when Russert died, Barbara Walters and others used it as an opportunity to nag about weight. That was tacky and unforgiveable. (And he wasn't even that fat!) Are we going to find a nag opportunity in Mr. Snow's death? Or realize that when our time comes our time comes! No one really know why and we should not sit around and judge for some and not for others.

Hard to feel sorry for a man whose salary of $168,000.00 was not enough to supprot his life style. A true Republican who advanced this administration's continuing lies and crimes. He will need all of his talents to explain his life at the pearly gates.
Posted by: Bill | July 12, 2008 12:03 PM
He may have been a great guy in a tough job, but watching him spin lies for the Bush administration, while barely able to keep a straight face, was painful and infuriating. Sorry, but I can't help thinking of him more as infamous than famous.

To Bill and to Ken L.,
this country lost a great American. He had a record of admonishing the Bush or any other administration when he felt they were not true to America. Your failure to know this is a testament to a blind Kool-aid drinking uninformed ideology. He may have been slightly right of center, but his integrity was All American.
Rest In Peace Mr. Snow - your departure is not timely as this country needs you now more than ever. Please put in a good word for America with that Deity upstairs. You are and will be missed.

Oh my God...you pathetic people rejoicing in a man's death are the most disgusting form of life. YOU people define "hate speech" and I can clearly see your left (Communist) political leanings.
I do hope that when you call 911 a Repubulican policeman or fireman shows up at your door and you can tell them to get lost. Ironically they will still save and protect you even though you should not be saved.
God bless you and your family Tony. Thank you for your love of country and your service. May the people that hate you fend for themselves and carry their hate to their graves, alone.

I lost my mother earlier this year to colon cancer. Losing someone to this dreaded disease can be truly devastating. I hope that someday, in my lifetime, enough resources can be devoted to eliminating the scourge of cancer from the face of this earth. I admired Mr. Snow's courage and faith in his battle to live. My sincere condolences to his family and may God grant him memory eternal.

To you nut-jobs (Joe, sad,) crying about "hate filled speech" Google Ted Kennedy Brain Tumor and you'll find plenty of hate speech from your ilk. It happens on both sides. You are not above it.

Here is some "food for thought" for you, Ellen: No one cares what you think either. We come to this board to share ideas. You need not share ideas if that does not suit you. On the other hand, it is rather obtuse of you to dissuade people from communicating on a board created for that very purpose.
* * * * *
As for the rest of you, the level of mean-spiritedness exhibited here is insufferable. I do not recall, for example, any instances where someone suggested Tim Russert was roasting in the nether-regions for being a liberal. Notions of decency ought to warrant the same level of respect here.
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
Did you see that, Ellen? You do not tell people to shut up. You let them speak their minds and then meet disagreeable speech with more speech in the form of criticism. That is the American, First Amendment way to do things. You shouldn't need me to tell you this.

Domenick, I'm sure you'll find out soon enough if you post messages like that on a regular basis. I'm no republican and I think Bush is a criminal and the worst president we've ever had, but everything I've seen of Snow showed him to be a nice intelligent man. I am also upset that some view the hate spreaders as liberals...they are not fit to wear a badge that says liberal or conservative. Mr. Snow may you rest in peace and may your family come to peace with your passing.
Bill and Ken L: You are correct.
Joe: Where is the hatred here? Who does not love their country here? Answer: You are making this up - it is a lie. You are a discredit to your name.
Ken Moyes: Does lying to cover your bosses lies constitute all-American integrity? I hope Mr. Snow puts in a good word for the world.
Al: You are way off base here.
Brian: Who here said anybody deserves to fight cancer? Answer: Nobody.
m mercaldo: The only things I've seen approaching hatred here are from those criticizing Bill and Ken L. for making truthful statements.
Thomas Breithaupt: Who here is rejoicing in a persons death? Answer: Nobody - you are making this up. I see a lot of hatred in your words - what might Jesus have to say to you about your ill-will?

After seeing some of the comments here from the Hate-Filled Members of the Loony Left, I stand by contention that the Loony Left truly is THE WORST MANKIND HAS TO OFFER!!
Tony, I am deeply saddened by your loss and sad for your wonderful family. Just like Tim Russert, you died much too young. Tony Snow was a great patriot, a great American. Mr. Snow had more class in baby toe than any Loony Lefty could ever hope to have!
God Bless, you, Tony Snow.

What is confounding to me is that Snow, the son of a woman who died of colon cancer at the age of 38, wasn't given screenings every year from age 20 on. My beloved sister-in-law was diagnosed last year with Stage 4 colon cancer at the age of 40. The doctors told her it could have been growing for TEN years.
She didn't have regular screenings because no one else in the family has had colon cancer.
But, for someone whose mother died of it, not to have regular colonoscopies is stunning. I am ASSUMING he didn't have regular yearly screenings because I assume they would have caught the cancer much earlier.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I get sick of hate-filled conservatives bashing all liberals every time they see a comment they don't like. So liberals should bash each and every conservative if they see a comment they disagree with? Look at the comments here about liberals. These are not hateful? Don't tell me that these are just a response to the comments about Snow. Hateful people make hateful comments.

I agree totally with what John D (July 12, 2008 4:42 PM) has to say. Tony was one of the most even handed, fair, and intelligent people I have ever known. Even though, at times, I could not agree with what he said. I will miss him greatly.
As for the others who can only hate and see negativity where ever they may look, and who have no clue as to the character of the man they are now trashing, may you all get what you truly deserve - a life of nothing but hate.
Posted by: The Doktor | July 12, 2008 8:13 PM
I know Tony would forgive those who post hate messages, and ask us to do the same. I know Tony would ask us to be positive, and to give back to others and help each other. I know Tony would wish God's blessings on all of us no matter what we call our own political persuasion.
I knew Tony. He was a man of class and character, who loved his family and country. He shared his illness openly and gave of himself often. He tried to be strong and positive, even when he probably knew death was coming sooner rather than later.
Liberals and conservatives alike have lost a good man and a patriot (and for the record, I am not a Republican and often disagreed with his views). He was truly one of the "good guys". My prayers are with the family.
Tony, we will meet again. I thank the Lord for giving us this man.

Tony Snow, father of three, went to his grave in defense of an administration that waged a ruthless war based on what it had to know was false information and which left countless of children dead, wounded or orphaned.
Those who eulogize Snow will say he did it out of love of country. But, like GW, I answer to a higher calling.

Professionally I think he was a hack, but death goes way beyond politics. It's sad that his family has to watch him waste away before their eyes.
He stood up for what he believed in, and although I don't agree with or understand how he held these beliefs, this is what being an American is about.
He was an American and a human being. We are less for his passing.
"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." --John Donne

The courage and paritcularly the optimism and faith which Tony Snow exhibited in his fight against colon cancer should be an inspiration. I know that they were to me.
The comments made by persons such as Domenick, Bill, and Ken L. which express a lack of sorrow and to some extent, joy, in Mr. Snow's death are not only tasteless, they are reprehensible. Regardless of his politics, Mr., Snow was a human being. There is every reason to believe that he was a decent person.
He certainly did nothing that would justify any one taking comfort in the fact that he died at the relatively young age of 53. His passing is a loss.

My condolences go out to the family. This is truly a sad time for them, and no one should have to lose their father. That being said, simply pointing out that it was, at times, difficult to listen to Snow do his PR job for Bush when you could tell he didn't believe half of the things he said, is NOT some awful comment. It is not hateful to comment on how someone performed on their job. So long as no body cheers for his death, having passed does not mean you have to laud everything that have ever done in their life.

Ken, you did not know Tony Snow. You did not know his heart, his love, and his kindness. If you had any clue as to who this man was, you could never make such careless statements.
I guarantee you, Tony is with God at this moment. His life, aside from politics (that was a job, not his life), was in service to others with cancer, and those ill with other dreaded diseases. He was an uplifting, sensitive soul who really cared and helped hundreds of people. His faith did not waiver, and he knew his faults and sins, and openly shared them.
Politically, I disagreed with his views on many things, but not his humanity and respect for all people. Politics to some people is a religion, and "the other side" was evil and not to be trusted. Tony was not like this, and had friends from the entire spectrum of political viewpoints. He never felt less of others who disagreed with him.
You did not know the man, so your opinion can be easily forgiven. If you did know him and his wonderful heart, you would consider him a good man. I knew him and he was certainly a better man than I am.
Many mourn our loss.

Wash out your headgear. Any fair and impartial tally would show the overwhelming majority of venomous posts come from those on the left, who are now cheering Tony Snow's death. The proof is in front of your face, which makes inexplicable your inability to see it.
*****
You really ought to lose the idea all evil comes from Republicans and nothing bad can come from the left. All men are capable of good and bad, idiocy and genius, wisdom and foolishness. The desire to absolve one faction of all faults and blame another faction for every problem is exactly the kind of thinking that gave fascism its legs in Europe during the first half of the Twentieth Century. Think about it.

It is so reassuring that the Democrats have embraced Obama's politics of unity and eschewed hate filled rhetoric.
Yeah, right.
By all accounts Tony Snow (like Tim Russert) was a decent caring man. I fear for this country that there are imbeciles who cannot separate their personal feeling about people from their political "ideals" although I use that term very loosely. Hearing these vitriolic comments about a man whose body has barely reached room temperature, a man who has hurt nobody, is just as sad as hearing of his passing.
May Tony rest in peace.

Maybe the comments re: Snowjob wouldn't be so acrid if the Trib's Mark Silva hadn't written a tongue kiss for somebody who was a flack for the worst presidential administration in the 20th century. Snow wasn't a conservative; he was a far-right ideologue. Editorial page editor of the Moonie-owned Washington Times and a talking head for Fox, if anyone deserves a harsh obit it's Snow. And, yes, for those of you who think Tim Russert got too flowery a send-off, it's true. Neither deserves brickbats in the first days after their deaths, but neither guy was a hero, or even much of a journalist. Russert was an entertainment personality and Snow in effect an apologist for criminals. Sure, they died too soon, but they both lived badly. Let's not glamorize hacks.

"He may have been a great guy in a tough job, but watching him spin lies for the Bush administration, while barely able to keep a straight face, was painful and infuriating. Sorry, but I can't help thinking of him more as infamous than famous."
Exactly, and that ain't hate speech, it is a fact.

We should not speak ill of the dead and the "liberals" should go easy on Tony, but Joe, EVERY White House Speaker will (knowingly) tell lies, that's their job. If a democrat wins, the speak will be telling lies, that's a guarantee. So its not a liberal/conservative thing and you don't need to go off.

No doubt you must be referring to Mr. Snows work in Kenya years ago to help the impoverished. Folks like you shouldn't be allowed to post when they are so ignorant to the facts of ones' life. Enjoy your hate filled life do you ?
