Matt Damon on Sarah Palin: 'Terrifying': The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

Matt Damon isn't feeling it when it comes to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as Sen. John McCain's running mate.

In an interview, he called her a purely "political" pick, said there was a 1 in 3 chance based on actuarial tables that McCain wouldn't survive his first term in the White House and called her "I'm-just-a-hockey-mom from Alaska" routine something out of a bad Disney movie. (That has to be the ultimate slap from a Hollywood star.)

What's more, Damon said he had a hard time envisioning her facing down Russian puppeteer, I mean, prime minister Vladimir Putin.

And he desperately wants to know if she really she really believes dinosaurs roamed the earth 4,000 years ago since she's going to be in control of the nuclear arsenal.

Watch it for yourself. I'm guessing there'll be some "Bourne" DVD-smashing parties in flyover country.

does anyone care about Matt Damon?

Another thing, what does her belief in dinosaurs roaming the earth have anything to do with nuclear arsenal codes. Don't forget Matt, Obama is a Christian as well, so he believes God created everything also. She has been a Governor for almost 2 years, while Obama has spent a total of 145 days total in Washington as a US Senator, and yet you feel comfortable with him as the President. Laughable.

Frank,

Don't those snarky people that use the phrase "flyover country" consider the Tribune's Chicago to be in those parts?

Great - thanks for the insight Matt...

Can someone check with Britney, Lindsay, Paris and Ozzy Osbourne for their considered opinion as well?

Funny- an in depth interview with Palins sister is considered pandering and softballl by the left ... but the opinion of someone whose sole contributio to society has been to be a good looking guy that can read a script for a gazillion dollars is propped up as worth our consideration?

Who cares what a hollywood (average, at that) actor thinks..? One thing is for sure: he just alienated a portion of his market.

Adam,
Do you believe dinosaurs roamed the earth 4000 years ago? Pick up a science book.

Matt Damon is the BOMB when it comes to an action star, but He BOMBS out when he gets into political commentating.
Damon needs to take a hard and close look at his candidate and see how "terrifying" he really is.
He needs to get back to the set of the Bourne 4.

Hey, I'm thinking the same things. I believe that the president and vice president should be a something kind of special. That they should have attended the best schools in the nation. That they should have been in an environment where they need to have felt the national pulse.
Say what you will about the experience of Palin vs. that of Obama, but his position was at the center of the political universe while hers was at the edge.

TERRIFYING is this little boy thinking he can use his CELEBRITY STATUS to spread lies about a very viable candidate. Isn't he doing ads on tv about us crossing over lines and standing together (with a donkey/elephant creature on it) hmmmm I get it now, he means coming together like Obama does when he talks the talk but not the walk with his ALL TO THE LEFT VOTING RECORD tsk tsk. What they want is for US TO ALL GO OVER TO THEIR FAR LEFT SIDE, sorry boys, it's not going to happen.

Here are some of the FACTS from Factcheck.org

Summary
We've been flooded for the past few days with queries about dubious Internet postings and mass e-mail messages making claims about McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin. We find that many are completely false, or misleading.

Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn't cut it at all. In fact, she tripled per-pupil funding over just three years.

She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.

She was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group that wants Alaskans to vote on whether they wish to secede from the United States. She's been registered as a Republican since May 1982.

Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a "courtesy" when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.

Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to "debate both sides" of the evolution question, but she also said creationism "doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."

Best reason yet to support Sarah Palin--Hollyweird's Matt Damon doesn't like her.

Frank James and Obama's Swamp facebook buddies are getting more and more desperate in their attacks. Even to the point of re-running the uninformed opinions of movie stars.

Most Christians DON'T believe in young-earth creationism-- don't try and tie that belief to the entire faith.

On the other hand, I haven't seen any comments from Palin which says that she personally believes Dino-Riders was a documentary, either- only that she wishes to pander to the nuts who do.

lol sounds like he was told what to say. Exactly the same message as we've heard when Palin was first introduced.

I disagree w/him. But still like him as an actor, he's a brilliant actor... now, as for his friend Ben Affleck... that's another story.

But really... why am I even commenting? I don't even care what his opinion is. Perhaps I like to hear his voice.

adam: don't show ignorance so readily; Dinosaurs and evolution compared to creationism. That's what Matt was referring to. Also, I’m tired of this inexperience reasoning of you righties, Palin's experience pales to Baracks. Do we have to go over this again for you slow learners? Harvard Law/8 years state senate/2 years us senate. Equal to Abe Lincoln who would Ms. Palin equal, no one, at least we can go back in history to find an equal but you guys have nada, none. Now go back to school or post something more intelligent.

while Obama has spent a total of 145 days total in Washington as a US Senator, and yet you feel comfortable with him as the President. Laughable.

Posted by: Adam | September 10, 2008 1:38 PM

What is laughable is that you completely ignore his time in the state senate from 1997 to 2004. I know that's not as impressive as mayor of mooseville, but you know.

His opinion is like a grade school kid.

Well put, Matt. It is truly frightening to think we could have an occupant of the White House who scorns more than 100 years of rational, scientific advance, overwhelming evidence of man made climate change and the existence of the earth for more than 4 billion years.

How many homes does Matt Damon own?

Well put, Matt. It is truly frightening to think that a candidate who disregards 100 years of rational scientific advance, denies the evidence for man made climate change and does not accept that the earth has existed for at least 4 billion years could occupy the White House in the foreseeable future.

Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?"
Posted by: DRAGGIN OUT THOSE CELEB PALS NOW | September 10, 2008 2:04 PM

I know it is tough...but...can you tell me what the difference between whether the book is in print or not? What the hell does that mean? What gives her the right to determine what can or can not come to print? Also...what is a what if? That makes some kind of difference...it means she was checking the waters so it must be in her agenda. Are you that blind? Let's say she says...hey...what if we send a nuke towards Russia....No big deal?

Don't conflate Christianity with young-earth creationism-- MOST Christians DO NOT subscribe to a Flintstones view of geology. It's just the loud and noisy fringe being exploited by conservatives to bait their enemies into coming across as anti-christian.

Hey, Abe Lincoln had less than a year of formal education and grew up in log cabins!

So being the "center of the universe" qualifies one for being president?

Now THAT is terrifying.

Why do actors seem to have this belief they know so much about politics because there is a camera stuck in their faces most of the time? And their conclusions--in this case that someone who has less experience (make that ZERO) than Palin and wants to decrease military spending a more comforting choice--are simply absurd, absurd.

It's all a part of the Obama Celebrity campaign. Real pretty stuff but not real. Fantasy sold at the box office to make people feel good but doesn't put food on the table or solve your families problems. We have to solve our own problems in life. Government or Hollywood can't and when government is presented as the be all - end all to the populations needs and problems you might as well simply spend your entire paycheck on movie tickets, obviously Matt Damon's movies I guess?

Youngster's eat it up but then realize when they have to grow up, go to work and make a living to survive, hollywood is phoney - fake - fantasy - meaningless but oh so pretty!

Another tactic by the Obama internet - hollywood - rhetoric campaign. Where's the beef? not in Hollywood, not in Obama either. I would like a job as Barry's stunt double though. He seems to be falling down alot lately.

Okay, here we go again. Let me remind you, a Hollywood actor's opinions and right to vote are equal to everyone else's opinions and right to vote. This goes for the bone-heads who voted for W, twice, because he was likeable and somehow bought the Rove-ian notion that being educated and well-informed is "elitist" and that beer-buddy appeal qualifies one to be President. Yes, even those folks have opinions and voting rights. Yet, it's actors who are routinely dismissed in this political conversation. Unless, of course, they're Republican. Hypocritical? Double-standard? Lipstick on a Pig? Yeah.

He's right.

Dismissing an actor because of the job they have is fairly foolish. What makes his opinion any less than any other citizen because he works in Hollywood? Does that mean we should have denied that Charlton Heston could be a political advocate? He worked there longer than Damon.
Damon's views are just as important as any other American's views. If you disagree with him fine, but basing that disbelief on his job is ludicrous. He just uses the soapbox that has been given to his advantage jsut as we use this comments thread.
Perhaps we shouldn't put any more weight to his ideas than Joe down the street but then that is our problem, not his.
Edward R. Murrow once said "Just because your voice reaches halfway around the world doesn't mean you are wiser than when it reached only to the end of the bar."
Was he talking about us or Damon? Probably both.

If you spent a few hours on the internet you might know a bit more about her. It is called research. I wonder how much he knows about Obama or Biden? I bet not much other than they are who he will vote for. Let's go to the polls. Gallup Daily, 48% McCain 43% Obama. Over at http://www.bop-o-rama.com
Obama 1,065,788 McCain 512,458

Just as everyone on this site can leave their very personal opinion, so can Matt Damon in any forum he so chooses. We are all entitled to our opinions--no matter if we flip burgers for a living or make movies.

I know it is tough...but...can you tell me what the difference between whether the book is in print or not?
Posted by: bill r. | September 10, 2008 2:32 PM

It's not tough- and pardon me for stepping in here, but
the point is- their is a clear problem with the facts of this accusation- the original story specifically said that she wanted to ban in 1996, among others, a Harry Potter book that was not published until 1998...
+++++
I have no idea what the context of her asking the "rhetorical" question would have been- or given the fact challenged details of the story IF any of this ever happened.. but the fact of the matter is that NO books were ever banned...and the librarian did not lose her job over her answer to this mysterious rhetorical question?
++++++
Maybe you could do a little more investigation, and make some more leaps to unsupported conclusions and let us all know how your guy can publish two "look at me" books that detail his transformation into who he is now and never mention how he had seriously considered military service. Or how he was "required" to register for selective service when there was no requirement to do so...

It's kind of ridiculous when an action-thriller star has to state the obvious and seems to have a better sense of what's really at stake with John McCain's presidential pick than the candidate himself. Damon is the guy who actually has the guts to say the Emperor's naked.

Palin is unqualified to be commander-in-chief and the fact that John McCain picked her to be a heartbeat away from that role shows he cares more about himself than about his country. That combined with the constant lies of his campaign during the past week show John McCain does not have the moral character to be President.

All the spouting of the right-wing radio talking point of Obama's 140ish days in Washingotn is ridiculous on so many levels. He has been a US Senator since Nov 2004. That's over 1400 days, not 140. He doesn't stop being a Senator, or having the responsibility of dealing with the issues just because he is running a campaign. It's also irrelevant. His ideas and policies have been on display for 19 months and have been tacitly approved by 18 million voters. Palin's ideas and policies are...what? Who knows. She is essentially a political appointee to the VP. We don't know if her ideas are sound because she hasn't offered any. She is running on biography and the positions of the McCain campaign - nothing more. We have no clue what her vision would be as President.

I agree 100% with Matt.

We can't have someone who thinks the Earth is 4000 years old have nuclear codes.

bill r>let me explain it for you. These people claiming that Palin tried to get rid of books went all out and circulated a list of books they said she wanted to get rid of but guess what some of them weren't even in circulation at that time.

That tells you that this is a smear campaign by a very desperate FAR KEFT GROUP WHO SEE THEIR DREAMS SLIPPING AWAY. Hope they keep coming out of the woodwork.

Just as everyone on this site can leave their very personal opinion, so can Matt Damon in any forum he so chooses. We are all entitled to our opinions--no matter if we flip burgers for a living or make movies.

Posted by: Janstress | September 10, 2008 2:58 PM

You are missing the point- that he is entitled to an opinion is stating the obvious.. That he is given a forum like this, ( a relatively widely read web blog) when he is no more qualified than anyone else, gives his opinion more weight than it deserves... but this does fit well with the whole cult of personality Obama campaign

Hey Orion--

Abe had about 18 months of formal education. Moreover, he was a (self-taught) lawyer, being admitted to the bar in 1837. He then served in the Illinois General Assembly as a representative. He served a term as a federal representative after that, but left politics for a short while after that term. He didn't formally re-enter politics until he was nominated for president. That level of experience is alarmingly similar to--gasp--Barack Obama's! So look into your analogies a little more before posting them...

Bill Hussein R., how many days is the Illinois State Senate in session out of the year, again? Burn.
95th General Assembly Session Schedule:
2008 Veto Session
January 2008 February 2008 March 2008
April 2008 May 2008

Matt has no worry losing Republican fans by speaking his mind. The Republicns are easily entertained by a moose killing hockey mom as their leader. Acting is the top attribute the lemmings follow with glee.

He brings up some very good points only one thing he left out. In 4 yrs, who would be John's running mate? Sarah again!
People this is "NUTs" it's an embarrassment to all the better Republican candidates that should be McCain’s running mate. When a Dem says to me sure Brian “Country First” I have to bow in shame!

Rollen...Right on!

2 words: TED NUGENT

Well, you certainly didn't alienate ME, Matt. Paylin is a nightmare come true ... a lying, conniving, ignorant opportunist. She is MORE than scary. On the other hand, where have we been for the past 8 years??? Clearly, ANYBODY can be president. This is a democracy (with emphasis on the MOC) and there are NO qualifications necessary for the job. Besides, there will always be a Dick Cheney in the background, waiting to pull the strings of dunderhead puppet presidents.
I give up. We will get the president we deserve. But I, too, don't know why EVERYbody (especially the press) isn't speaking out about McCain's most cynical, idiotic choice. At least YOU will be able to go peacefully to your grave, and no one will be able to say: Why didn't someone TELL me. Good work!

I'm with you 100%, Matt. I'm still shaking my head. This is an even bigger embarassment than George Bush.

John McCain would rather lose the country than lose an election, that's why he picked Palin.

I care about what he thinks because he can say it. Do you think the pundits they drag out of nowhere are anymore qualified to speak. Well I don't he is absolutle right, Obama was in the state senate for years prior to congress so stop comparing the two, she is barley educated for goodness sake, I respect the fact that he speaks out even if it will offend some of you to bad. I don't think he will lose any sleep tonight because you don't agree with him.

You go, Matt. Voice your opinion, like any other American. As Robert Duval, as Wilfred Brumley, as Barbara Streisand, they can all let their preferences be known, after all, this is still America, isn't it ??!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Another generic Hollywood actor person denigrating Republicans. Shocking.

Leftists, Any favorable comparison of YOUR man to Abraham Lincoln is purely incidental, accidental, and surely non-intentional. You could read some Lincoln biographies or you could just trust me on that, but do Believe or get some help. Abe Lincoln, He AIN'T.

OBAMA, AN ORGANIZER OF WHAT ? OF NOTHING !WHEN ARE YOU LIBS GOING TO WAKE UP, CHECK ON BIDENS BILLS WHEN HE RAN THE LAST TIME, SARA WAS A MAYOR AND A GOVERNER, WHAT THE HELL HAS YOUR BUDDY OBAMA DONE, NOTHING, HASNT EVEN GOT HIS NAME ON ANY BILL WHILE IN THE SENATOR, WHAT A JOKE !

This comment has nothing to do with my opinion of Palin. Hey Matt: Shut up! No one asked for your opinion. I'm confident in my own ability to make decisions so I certainly don't need your help. Perhaps when you start asking me for my opinion on which scripts you should read I'll listen to your views on politics. Nothing is more annoying than pampered celebrities who are so out of touch with reality but seem to think that their opinion matters.

Matt Damon is an idiot - nobody cares what he thinks. He is only showing his stupidity by opening his mouth - Like we are supposed to follow his bad advice and opinions. Monkey see---monkey do?? Not me!! HAHAHAHA!!!

Stick to acting Damon...who cares what you think?

How can i get my opionon on fox news headline? Its scare that an actor will get his say with that much weight behind it. To bad a lot of the public will be like " yah know Matt is right!!". Oh well, the media is at it again!

just another hollywood blowhard, spouting his agenda for the rest of us. well since they are all so rich, are they going to help put my kids through college and help with my medical bills? I thought not.

For the record, I DON'T happen to believe Matt Damon has any better opinion than anyone else. It's interesting, though, that when we're talking about left-leaning actor types, they're worthless and ignorant. Get RIGHT-leaning actors in the picture, though, and they automatically become Great Americans and the epitome of intelligence, someone to emulate.

This woman has a 4 year degree (that it took 6 years to achieve) in journalism from Idaho State University. Journalism.... e.g. absolutely no critical thinking skills. To boot it took her 6 years to get said worthless degree. Don't we want someone with at least some understanding of U.S. Constitutional Law and foreign policy as our V.P. let alone President? Does anyone make sense anymore. Come on people!!! Half of us have family way more qualified to be president. I have three more degrees than this woman, from better Universities in disciplines that don't seriously consider the "art of spin" an area of study. Please, listen to reason. Do not allow this woman into the highest office in the land. Elect someone with a relevant and higher education. Please!!!

Why do so many of the Conservatives hate America?

Look how great our country is. People brave being shot, drowned, suffocated and worse, just to get a chance to be here. We have the greatest country in the world.

Yet the Right and Right of Right don't think so.

Why are you so unpatriotic? Show us a country in the world that has a system of government like the one you want to create here. Really...just one.

Do you really think that your party is always right and never wrong? Do you really think RELIGION should be the basis for a government? Do you really think RELIGION should be the basis for education? Perhaps Iran is the place for you..or Saudi Arabia.

Do you truly believe in the Free Market? Or do you just believe you pay too much taxes?

Look what happens at the first instance of financial collapse at the venerable Wall Street brokerages (all bastions of the free market, right?)....they run to Congress. So that you and I can bail them out. A Free Market is a ball of lies.

$10 Billion a Month in Iraq...for what? Security. Dream on. Solve the Arab/Israeli Conflict and maybe there will be peace...or not.

$120 Billion a year could build lots of roads, bridges and schools in this county. Help educate our children. Provide the necessary tools for America to be a leader in the next century. Provide health care to millions.

Why is healthcare such a negative issue for you? Don't you see that once healthcare is guaranteed at the basic level that Corporations will have money to invest in research and development. And people will have freedom to move from one job to another without fear of losing their health coverage.

A whole wave of American Entrepreneurship is waiting to be launed when people are free to leave their hated/boring jobs and do what they love and dream about without fear of losing health coverage.

Uggh. Really. Why do you hate America so....you Righties and Right of Righties?? Why??

yankee @ 5:54 p.m.,

I know that the great Obama was on the staff at the University of Chicago (right?) as a Law instructor. In his comments after the Washington D.C. decision on hand guns and again when he was trying to explain what kind of Supreme Court justices that he would appoint, I did NOT see any indication that he understands a damn thing about constitutional law. Man, I'm just being honest with ya.

I just don't get this guy. I see none of the psychedelic colors that you Liberals see. Went to a ton of concerts in the 70's and 80's. Didn't do the drugs. I absolutely don't get it. And Please don't tell me that he is Abraham Lincoln.

Keep it up Hollywood. Your comments have an inverse impact.

He's right. American politics has officially become the laughing stock of the world thanks to John McCain's and Karl Rove's cynical choice. Can you imagine this woman as president if McCain dies? Russia, North Korea, and the terrorists will bomb this country into oblivion. We're doomed. They will laugh at this hockey mom and obliterate us off the map. If John McCain dies the country dies. That is officially why I can never vote for him. He cares more about votes than our safety. This country is going to hell in a hand cart.

What business does this hollywood nitwit have opening his mouth?? For the record, Sarah Palin would be facing down Dimitry Medvedev as he is now the President of Russia, and Vladimir Putin is now the prime minister, second-in-line. I suppose he is assuming that McCain and Medvedev would simultaneously die, leaving Palin & Putin "facing down".

I don't get Matt Damon. I didn't hear if he was for Obama or not on this little video, but I'm assuming he is. You say "What can be more scarier than Obama for president???! " What ever is said about Palin's lack of experience is mathematically exponential for Obama. He has no experience that qualifies him to be President. NONE. Senators learn their trade on the job... not Presidents. But that's not even the scary part. The part that's scary is not whether Palin sat in her church over the years and listened to creationism, but what Obama listened to and ingrained into his consciousness listening to the evil Reverend Wrightfor twenty years ( why did it take you twenty years to denounce him, Obama? Why did you only denounce him when the cameras were on you? Did he totally switch his view only at that moment ,Or was it pretty much the same for twenty years? Don't bother to answer. We already know). What's scary is how Obama obtained his house and the criminals he associates with. I could go on and on. But, I'm a fan (or was) of Damon, and I can tell when he chooses to use a dialogue and a mannerism and a choice of words to basically sell (or act) his way into a ridiculous conclusion for his audience. I saw right through him on this little video. If we could get to the real truth about Obama's sins, I bet it would make a great Hollywood movie, maybe right up there with the "Godfather" or maybe the "Bourne Identity Crisis." It's ok to try to use logic, but only when the rules of logic apply across the board. And, no, I'm not voting for either one of them. But logic allows me to decide the lesser of two evils... if putting it that way can get through to Damon, using his own logic.
By the way, Palin's a better man than Obama is and that's why he's scared of her whether Damon wants to admit or not.

What a tool. Maybe instead of the "sexiest man" he should be the "most sexist man". Do you think he ever would've made these comments about someone with testes? You're fooling yourself if you think so. (Of course, Mr KGB would cower if face to face with the great community activist... maybe in the mind of macho Matt). It's pathetic--almost to the point of being humorous--the way all the good liberals, especially women, are tolerating if not defending the sexism, chauvinism, and misogyny being spewed by the left--the supposed defenders of women and equal rights. If nothing else, the left, and their proponents in the "news" media are being exposed for the frauds they are. And while we're at it, Mr Dumbass, I mean Damon, no, I had it right, do you know how concerned I am about a creationist holding our nuclear codes? 0% How about a communist (contraction of "community activist"? hmmm...)? 100%

Way to go Matt. I appreciate your intelligent way of expressing my exact feelings. Rather than criticize those in the public eye for voicing their views we should be thankful they care enough about our country to have well informed views to share.

Pam,
Spoken like a true moron. Anyone who has a basic understanding of current affairs in Russia understands that Medvedev was handpicked by Putin and is doing Putin's bidding. In other words, the country is run by Putin. Get a clue!

I love all of these people who watched the clip and then said, "Who cares what Matt Damon thinks?" Ummm....you do!

I have read all the comments and it seems to me that many of you are torn in the same way our country is....what we need is a leader of our nation. Do you think any of these individuals have the qualities that are needed to run our country today? Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Carnegie, John Adams, James Madison or even Thomas Jefferson. Do you know what they all had in common? They were all ATHEISTS!!!!! Religion has nothing to do with running our country, it is truly what divides us! Vote for what is good for the nation in the long term and quit thinking short term. How are we going to solve the real issues in America? I really wonder how many of you have taken a drive across this beautiful country and have seen first hand the poverty and destruction of our cities. Detroit and much of the industrial areas of Ohio and Indiana are dumps with the majority of homes being boarded up...this is our Baghdad without the military or police to maintain order....and nobody is talking about it!! Wake up America, we are getting our lunch handed to us with embarrassing international test scores....our 8th graders ranked 28th in world, just ahead of Latvia. We rank 15th in the world in Democracy, 14th in the world for freedom of press, and 17th in the world for least amount of corruption., 6th in the world for highest standard of living and 13th in the world for quality of life; can't we do better than this?? We are the richest country in the history of the world? What kind of example are we? What country would want to follow in our foot steps? We are not going to be the leaders of the world for very long unless we give our children a truly 1st rate education, health care for all, social security that you can actually live off of and start paying off the $53 trillion national debt. I am not a Democrat or a Republican, I am just embarrassed at where this great nation has gone in the last 50 years...especially in the past 8 under GWB.

Oh Matt, you idiot! Check out your "misinformation" so you don't have to be so scared anymore.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/palin/newsquotes.asp

If "Forth" sees the south side of Chicago as "the center of the universe" you liberals have a serious problem. I lived and worked there for several years and have a different view. By the way.. Who paid Obama for his community organizing and how much was he paid annually?

A rather sober, articulate and on-point critique of someone who is a literal heartbeat away from the presidency.

The republican smear machine is in high gear, and initial results are succeeding since they can not run on the record. reality must give way to personalities if the McCain/Pain agenda is to prevail.

We live in a brain dead world and this sound byte republican noise machine is doing what it does best.

think people. who is the women? you know not of her other than what the architects of personality want you to see.

thanks matt, you speak the truth. lets see what the debates bring.

“Palin, and the circus she's brought to town, are simply a bountiful collection of small lies deliberately designed to distract the country from one big truth: the havoc that George Bush and the Republican Party have wrought, and that John McCain is committed to continuing.
Every second of this campaign not spent talking about the Republican Party's record, and John McCain's role in that record, is a victory for John McCain.
Her critics like to say that Palin hasn't accomplished anything… in the space of ten days she's succeeded in distracting the entire country from the horrific Bush record -- and McCain's complicity in it. My friends, that's accomplishment we can believe in.
McCain's real running mate is George Bush and the failed policies of the Republican Party. Even if they are dressed up in a skirt, lipstick, and Tina Fey glasses.” -Arianna Huffington

None of the Above: the 'Left' as sexist? Hardly. If you recall the Democrats almost nominated a woman for the office of President this year. A woman, I might add, who has proven herself in the United States Senate and on the campaign trail, and has withstood intense public scrutiny on a national level since 1991-1992. The Republicans had to be handed their vice presidential candidate as a surprise tactical maneuver, chosen in secrecy by party insiders. The true female leaders of the Republican party are conspicuously absent from this media circus. This is a distraction, pure and simple, from the real issues and pressing challenges of this election.

Oh no; cele-brat-ies speaking out against Republican candidates? What's next, "Dog Bites Man?"

Thanks Matt, for your learned opinions. Most of middle America can certainly relate with you, because you are so good at pretending to be somebody else on the big screen, hence, your qualification for steering us politically.

Stand Up Chuck!

Everyone who thinks that Matt Damon should keep his mouth shut because he's "just a stupid actor" is obviously right. Boy, how dumb can all of those "liberals" really be? I mean, it's not like the Republicans have ever listened to (much less, elected) anyone from Hollywood... Well, other than Ronald Reagan, that is... Oh, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as well...

What I find scary is the lack of any sense of discourse in this blog. Shall we discuss the ability of the candidates to address the issues?
Sarah Palin has shown that she can address a large crowd of fans and give a rousing speech. Like most women, she can be as tough as she needs to be when she needs to be, and in Alaska, that's pretty often. And she is honest with other people's money.
But one thing bothers me more than anything else: her world view is limited to Biblical teaching and has no room for nuance. The world the President (and that could be her job title soon) requires cogent nuanced thinking about the friends and enemies of our country, a nuance noticeably lacking in the current administration. I fear her training in Alaska politics lacks exposure to these nuances.
Her running mate may have years of foreign relations experience, but his world view is that of the hotshot fly-boy he was in the Vietnam War. He is in favor of war because his involvement (besides his prison camp experience) was the remote control fighter. Those on the ground knew what a real war was really like, and grew to oppose the failing policy they were sent to enforce.
Okay, I can't resist two cracks:
1. Did anyone read the story about the sudden changes in Sarah Palin's Wikipedia entry that revised her entry and minimized the part about her 'Troopergate' scandal? This occurred 24 hrs before she was named by McCain as his Veep. Nothing like polishing the resume...
2. According to the Navy, McCain was not at fault for the fire on the US Forrestal that killed 134 sailors and injured 161, and put the ship out of commission for months. He was completely exonerated.

Wow. I am amazed reading all the comments. There is such a great divide. Each side terrified by the other. Maybe there is another way of approaching this.

I love all this admiration the Republicans are showing Matt Damon, for his, speaking his mind and not sounding like a pig with lipstick. It may just be a rumor, but the Republicans may be coming to their senses and may be thinking of dropping Governor Palin, letting her get back to the pits, where she seems to be, at home !! Now, we can concentrate and do our duty and elect a competent President, Senator Obama !! It just dawned on me, the Republicans haven't elected a President, that one could honestly call competent, since President Eisenhower. Isn't that incredible !!? That is how long they have been bamboozling the electorate, with phony candidates and dishonest posturing !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Yeah, I have to agree that a degree in journalism from an Idaho school is not that impressive. And, yeah I wonder how it prepared her for the presidency. But then I think of all the people with their great educations who are leading our country...and it's in such great shape. Where was the country headed when we had a president, Jimmy Carter, with a degree from the Naval Academy, and an advanced degree in physics? And think how well served the business community was by a criminal like Ken Lay who had a doctorate in philosophy. And by Jeffrey Skilling who had a degree from Harvard Business School. So, you're telling me that an advanced degree guarantees what?

While not everybody can agree on how whether they like/dislike Matt Damon, you can't ignore that what he said in the beginning of his statement is very true. We want a women with 0 experience in foreign policy and all her baggage to lead our country to VICTORY against the middle east? Especially, when foreign policy and experience were John McCain's main selling points BEFORE he announced his new "super cool hockey mom" running mate? Give me a break people!

Regardless if she is a young-earth creationist or not... it is just semantics. The story of the first 11 chapters of the Genesis are important insomuch as they involve the supernatural creation of God. The Gospel is not dependent upon the timing of creation... only that it is real. If you read the original Hebrew text, there are instances where the Hebrew word for "day" refers to a 24 hour period, less than a 24 hour period, and more than a 24 hour period. Thus, it isn't conclusive... but again, the timing isn't important to the message of the Christian Gospel. Whatever I believe, I understand that I may be wrong. But it honestly doesn't matter for the truth of the Gospel.

About Damon's comments... What makes him an expert? He mentions actuarial tables... is he an actuary? Or is he just taking someone else's opinion as his own? Just because he's a celeb doesn't mean he should automatically get mike time. He got his... where's mine?

What if McCain said "monkey see, monkey do" or "that's the pot calling the kettle black" during one of his speeches in reference to one of obama's policies or statements.
The liberal left, msm would scream it from the top of every building for weeks right up till election day.

Matt Damon completely off on McCain actuarial table claim
By Tony Kondaks
tkondaks@cox.net

Matt Damon says if you look up the actuarial tables there is a one in three chance that McCain will die within the next four years.

Damon then boldly challenges us to "do the actuarial tables".

Well, I did...and Damon is off...WAY off.

The actuarial tables supplied by the U.S. government indicate a one in seven chance, NOT a one in three chance.

Take a look at the actuarial tables.

If you add up the four years for males from ages 72 to 75 you get 0.151985 which translates to about 1/7th or one in 7.

The commands on here and on some other sites really scare the hell out of me when it comes to the voting booth. Some people proudly proclaim they love Obama because he is “so good looking” some others because he is “black”.
Same thing with Palin, because “she is a woman” , easy on the eye, no doubt, mother of a “down syndrome child”.
I am sure that every one of those people has an expectancy of some return like most voters do. But do we really want to put the future of our country on these qualifications?
How can we expect a leader to make peace in the world when we split hairs over race, gender, age, religion even before we go to the polls?
I am certain that every candidate is honorable in their convictions. I don’t think that ability has anything to do with race, gender, age or religion but with the strength of leadership that has visions of the future that serves for the good of all.
Personal opinions should be left in the four walls of our abode and tolerance and empathy should govern our choice to how we want to change this world and with whom.

I agree with a comment that a lady stated on this site regarding the office of presidency. You can't help but acknowlege and respect the intelligence of Barack Obama. His wife is also as well educated and as driven as him. That shows something about a person. Your spose is a reflection of yourself. As far as Sarah Palin I think she will go down as a presidential canidate, president or vice president with the least amount of experince that could get voted into the office. All i hear from her is the same speech that she gave at the RNC. In fact they looped it on several news stations, even FOX news and it was recited word for word in at least (7) different venues. How can you as a politican be viewed as new and change making, when you don't have anything new to say and your same rhetoric wasn't changed. All she is, is someone women voters can cling to. That's fine if your looking for a friend, but if your looking for a president you might need someone that has the experince of governing over more than the 600,000 people that are in Alaska. What real issues has she dealt with, is she going to address the big city issues with a small town attitude? All I know is that individuals that are big fish in a small pond, Get dropped in the ocean and ate by the sharks.

Damon is a classic example of "don't bother me with facts, my mind is already made up," and that goes for a lot of other opinions I have just read here. You don't like her because she is a conservative woman, with a strong belief in Christian principles. I happen to admire that, as do millions of Americans. The problem with celebrities' opinions is that they always seem to get them widely publicized, which of course makes them experts in the eyes of the gullible masses. After all, a super hero couldn't be wrong...

THUMBS UP Damon! Obama is the MAN.

heartburn--- you can hardly compare matt to brittney and lindsey, just because he's an actor doesn't mean he's stupid. he went to harvard and we all know you have to be smart as hell just to get accepted there. he all also co-wrote an oscar winning screenplay. matt is intelligent and is a very active philanthropist and has as much right to speak his mind as anyone else.

DRAGGIN-- you mentioned factcheck.org, perhaps you should check their comments on both mccain and palin's speeches at the RNC, as well as how obama is taken out of context on the republican t.v. ads...

Why can't we talk to each other in this country anymore? Seriously, I hate to be the Rodney King of the group, but its ridiculous nowadays. Anyone on the right calling Obama or his followers by the name of "Hussein" really needs to pull their heads out of their backsides. And anyone on the left who describes anyone on the right as Nazis needs to pick up a book and read about what the Nazis actually stood for.

McCain as president wouldn't be the end of the world (though I do cringe at the thought), and neither would Obama (cringe-worthy for the rightwingers, I'm sure). They both love this country and they both are politicians who are lying to some extent to get elected. I'm for Obama, but I honestly do want to know about his stance on some of the things that he hasn't talked about (at least to my knowledge). Like gay marriage (which I'm for... its an equality thing, pull your heads out of your bibles) and gun control (which I'm only for a reasonable amount of, but nothing approaching the abolition of guns, which is completely unconstitutional).

McCain does appear so far to be primarily pandering to get elected. I only hope that if he IS elected that he will once again become the "maverick" he claims to be. His recent record mostly indicates otherwise. Honestly, Palin has said absolutely nothing of substance and she is off limits to the media so far, which is absurd to me. I'm patiently awaiting the debates, but the reluctance to let her speak is detrimental to her image, in my opinion.

I think what us liberals are upset about when it comes to Palin is that everyone attacking Obama has been stating how inexperienced he is. This includes the Clinton campaign. But being that this was the right's primary attack just seems to underscore how politically underhanded this VP pick was. Say what you want about Obama, at least his own criticisms continue to hold some water. Honestly, I think the experience thing isn't the greatest factor, even in Palin's case. Someone with years of experience can falter and buckle under pressure, and someone with no experience can rise to the challenge. It all depends on character, which isn't necessarily a constant throughout one's life. Kennedy, who people thought was too young and inexperienced, with the judgment of his brother Robert, got us through the Cuban Missile Crisis. Even though his cabinet of "more experienced" advisors disagreed vehemently with his opinion. No one can say that Obama wouldn't do the same. All Palin has shown us so far is that she can talk smack. Mostly name calling and nothing really specific, but she can be mean to her opponent. Great.

All I'm saying is, think for yourselves. Just judging by the speeches I've heard Obama give, I think he might say the same thing, even if it were about him. Consider the source and think for yourself. Even if it is praise for the side you're on, don't defend it mindlessly, think critically. I respect McCain for his service to the country and I don't doubt that he is a patriot, but he has taken the wrong side too many times and double-talked his way out of a vote from me. Obama has been great so far and he has my trust, but I do realize that Martin Luther King he is not. He does give me hope in a great many ways, but he has much to achieve to come close to the sacrifice that Dr. King gave for this world. I'm pretty sure that Obama would agree with me, which would only strengthen my respect for him.

You right wingers can bash me and you left wingers can praise me, but this is not my goal. Look, I don't know much about Biden, so I think I should look him up. Look up his voting record and maybe what his opponents have said about him and if they seem to be true or not. And if I don't, I really shouldn't be defending him to anyone who might be attacking him, should I? But how about you righties? How many of you have looked up Palin (because I know not many of you knew anything about her)? The only negative thing that seems to be conclusive about her in my opinion is that she voted on the bridge to nowhere thing until it was stopped by congress and only THEN voted against it. Yet she says in her one big speech that she said "Thanks but no thanks" to it. That seems insanely contradictory to me. I'd concede that about my candidate if it were mine that said it. Where are the right wingers that AREN'T blindly defending this woman? Why can't we talk about these people without either side savagely attacking or mindlessly defending them?

The person I would want for president (aside from usually being the choice between the lesser of two evils) is the person who can actually have a discourse with the "enemy". Even if the enemy is an extremist (be it left wing, right wing, or religious), the person in charge should be able to understand the other side's motivation so that they know how to effectively solve the problem. It only strengthens you to talk to people on the opposing side and consider their point of view critically. Unless, of course, the other side is unwilling to talk.

Okay, rant over, continue hating each other.

thanks for wasting valuable electrons in telling us the opinion of some TMZ clod using up unallocated oxygen. Aren't there more important things to be sharing with us?

What's truly terrifying is that there are Americans who care what an actor's political views are. We all know that actors are among the poorest educated profession, don't we?

I'll even go one step further and hypothesize, based upon what I hear them say, that they are also among the least intelligent people on the planet. Their opinions have exactly NO value.

This guy is an actor, since when does his political opinion mean anything to the people? People should make up their own minds without this kind of pollution coming actors.

I really like Matt and his movies. ALL CELEBRITIES should stay out of politics.

Matt Damon is Hollyweird.Frankly Matt I don't give a damn what you think you are a liberal actor in the tank for B Hussein Obama. The DNC dredges up these Hollyweird types close to election time to sway stupid votes.
Daniel Pate do you believe Obama could negotiate without waving a white flag of surrender boy that will scare our enemies. He will be the second term of Jimma Carter who gave Iran to the Islamic Jihadists and deposed the Shah. He couldn't end the hostage crisis. Paul Voelcker Obamas guy was the Fed Reserve board chair and he raised interest rates to 22.5 percent.Carter like Obama had no energy policy we had gas rationing long lines at the pump and no gas sales on Sundays. He ruined the real estate and hotel and motel business with high, high enrgy prices which brought on a great recession by the end of his term. We don't need Carter or Obama! Jerry White, Springfield, IL

I cannot believe how stupid Matt Damon sounded in his interview. He had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. Why would anyone want to know his opinion on anything.

Matt, You affirmed your true colors, you are ungrateful to your fans
which I was. You take our money, and spit in our face. I dont give a
flying flock what you think. You're just an actor paid to act. You're
obvious hate for people you don't agree with will forever shine brighter
than your greatest movie roles of the past and future. I will never pay
to see another one of your movies. I am now certain who you are. You
are an attack dog, a rabid pit bull, and a bully. Wise people evaluate a
person's character before they try to destroy their lives and the lives of
their children. Shame on you Matt Damon. I have no respect for you.

A RESPONSE TO ACTOR, MATT DAMON ...

MATT ...

You're just an actor, and everyone knows that you and Ben Afflick have been in the tank for Obma, even before Palin came along. Your lines are written for you, just like a speech writer creates the lines for Obama.
A director tells you what to do each moment . Make-up people and costurme designers work on your
appearance. Other than that, you're just like anybody else, except you seem to think that since you're
a manufactured celebrity, your opinion means more, but it doesn't.

QUESTION:
IS PALIN QUALIFIED COMPARED TO OBAMA ?

ANSWER:
http://townhall.com/blog/g/cba8713c-ef73-4ebc-aa5e-bc53e6596e2a&comments=true

Once again ... if you compare McCain/Palin's track record with Obama/Biden's, it's no contest. McCain/Palin are a hundred times more qualified to lead this country. McCain/Palin show scores of actual achievements and solid service to America, while once again, Obama's track record is one of excessive absences from his responsibilities, and all talk with no actual experience, or contributions to America.
Like Governor Palin has pointed out ... Obama had the time to write two memoirs, but never wrote one piece of significant legislation ... not even when he was in the state legislature. Regarding earmarks, and the economy ... If Obama gets elected, his irresponsible and clueless ideas for shifting America's wealth would turn the U.S.A. into a third world country, with businesses laying off employees to keep their doors open. Obama's ideas for national security would de-fang America and make us weak, putting us at the mercy of the world's tyrants.

The difference between Matt Damon and the rest of us is we don't have an AP reporter and cameraman begging us for an opinion that will be broadcast all over the globe.

Yes, he has a right to express his opinion. No one is arguing he doesn't. It's a strawman to say those who think he is a clown for his comments don't support his right to be the funniest clown around.

Matt Damon doesn't make his comments in a vacuum and just as he has a right to belittle Sarah Palin, we all have a right to either applaud or boo him.

Attention, Matt Damon: BOOOOOOO! Get off the stage, clown.

Sarah Palin running for VP is like a bad Disney Movie?? Do you mean like the fake, far fetched crap that comes out of hollywood all the time? You have some nerve Matt Damon, you and the rest of those overblown bimbos in hollywood should talk. Your not a bad movie, your a cartoon! What is way scarier then someone who has devoted her life to her Country, her State and her Family running for VP is anybody even listening to you overblown, out of touch ego maniacs from hollywierd in the first place! Get over yourself . Shut up and play make believe, your opinion means nothing to "real" people!

Matt Damon went to Harvard and to be good in any profession you need to be least somewhat smart. What can you say about yourselves? You dont necessarily need to agree, but lets put facts on the table and discuss.

If you think Obama is not experienced, and Paulin is, go ahead and vote for her, I mean McCain.
