President Bush, citing the damage that Hurricane Ike is causing in not only Texas, but also parts of Louisiana, said today that federal agencies will be monitoring gas prices in the midst of energy-supply disruptions to ensure there is no "price gouging.''

"Obviously, this is a huge storm that is causing a lot of damage, not only in Texas but also in parts of Louisiana,'' Bush said in a brief statement outside the White House this morning. "The storm is yet to pass. I know there are people concerned about their lives. Some people didn't evacuate when asked.''

Rescue teams are staged and "prepared to move when weather conditions permit,'' he said. Authorities will be "ready to help once this storm moves on.''

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff plans to travel to Texas this afternoon, the president said, "to help the state of Texas... begin the recovery effort.

"Obviously there will be concerns about electricity,'' the president said. "We've got generators in place... They'll be concerned about water and ice.

"They'll be concerned about energy... I'm concerned about energy,'' said Bush, who has eased EPA restrictions to enable more gas to be imported. "In the meantime the Department of Energy, Federal Trade Commission will be monitoring gas prices to make sure that consumers are not being gouged.''
