How construction cranes work
With the recent construction crane accident in Miami, we thought a page created last July by former graphics reporter Hiram Henriquez would be informative. It explains how construction cranes lift, how much they cost, and how they are constructed.

Nice 3D work. How long did it take to research, sketch and draw the whole graphic?

Hiram spent a couple of weeks researching the page between assignments and writing the text. Then he had a week to work on the page uninterrupted. That's our standard schedule for our weekly page.

Wow nice illustration, really clean and well executed. How did you manage to do this? is this a vector illustration o some kind of 3d rendering effect?

There are some vector touches, but it's primarily a 3D illustration built in LightWave. The different renderings were combined in PhotoShop and the page was built in Adobe Illustrator.

I agree that the illustration is phenomenal. It really give you a three dimensional perspective of the crane and it's functions.
