CPR has just been simplified.

Watch this video for details on how to perform this easy hands-only CPR.

More information is available at The American Heart Association which has additional videos.

I know the Sun-Sentinel didn't make that graphic, but isn't 100 compressions a minute, um, a little excessive?

It would seem to me like that might break some ribs overdo it a bit.

Though I could be wrong.

No...that is not excessive. Your heart is a pump that beats normally somewhere around 70-80 beats per minute. When CPR is performed, The rescuer is trying to operate that pump, but is not as effective as when the body does the pumping itself. If someone requires CPR, they are not worried about a few broken ribs. If they complain about broken ribs, it is because they were revived. I'd rather a few broken ribs than be dead.

I know 100 seems like a lot but its not. Michael Sayre of the Ohio State University Dept. of Emergency Medicine in Columbus says,"Many times people nearby don't help because they're afraid that they will hurt the victim and aren't confident in what they're doing...We want people to know that they can help many victims, just by calling 9-1-1 and doing chest compressions. Don't be afraid to try it." We appreciate your passion.
