Florida lighthouses: Jupiter Lighthouse gets major honor

JupiterLighthouseNI.jpg
In May, the Jupiter Lighthouse in Palm Beach County was given the federal Outstanding Natural Area designation. This means the historic lighthouse and its surrounding park has the same protection as a federal monument.

And what's so great about that?

For starters, it's only the second lighthouse in the country to have this designation — Yaquina Head lighthouse in Newport, Ore., is the first. And, not to mention, it's really, really hard to get this federal stamp of approval.

So check out the Sunday News Illustrated page highlighting the Jupiter Lighthouse's features and history.

And coming soon, an updated multimedia gallery showcasing seven of the state's lighthouses, including Jupiter's.

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum is open Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-5pm, last lighthouse tour leaves at 4pm. The phone is 561-747-8380 and current website is www.jupiterlighthouse.org. The Loxahatchee River Historical Society, a 501(c)3 organization through a lease with the US Coast Guard, maintains the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and operates tours.

All the articles on the Florida Lighthouses say to go to the multimedia gallery...I have but cannot find the Florida Lighthouses slideshow...help.

I work for Coast Guard Housing which owns the 11 houses directly surrounding the Jupiter Lighthouse. We would like to have the slideshow for our files and historical information.

Hi everyone! We had to temporarily pull the multimedia gallery to make some changes. I'll be sure to post it as soon as it's ready. So sorry for the inconvenience!
