Express lanes open: Toll to vary, free for some

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
Express lanes will begin charging tolls Friday, Dec. 5 on Interstate 95.
For some people travel will be free: registered carpools with three or more occupants, registered hybrid vehicles, motorcycles, emergency vehicles and buses. Drivers will be able to use their SunPass for these lanes, although the amount will vary depending on road congestion. Costs will generally be 25 cents to $2.65 to travel from downtown Miami to the Golden Glades interchange.

BROWARD COUNTY
Construction scheduled to begin in 2010.

this is still a bad idea. charging for what used to be a public road. And just how are people going to know how much they are going to be charged. If I could drive on a less congested lane (not that this is guaranteed - especially if there is an accident on that lane) for 25 cents, I'd do it everyday but I'd hate to start on the lane and then find out I'm paying $2.65. How will I know? and will I have to decide not to take the lane for $2.65 in a matter of seconds while driving in traffic at 60-70 mph? And what about all those other people trying to choose that same thing while talking on their cell phones, eating, or playing with the radio?

Here is some additional information on tolling. Unfortunately I don't think this will make you feel much better.

bad idea:
it's a great idea.
1. the road is still a free public road. all they did was add a lane that has a toll charge.
2. if enough people use it it will speed up the free lanes
3. if people want to pay more $ they can go faster. what exactly is wrong with that?
4. the price you see is the price you pay.
