Online News Squared is leaving the comfort of the Mama T hosting bosom and in the next day or so, will be moving over to a new server. So there may be hiccups with feeds and stuff as DNS gets resolved and Squared's coding screwups get laid bare. Patience.

Chapter Next

Squared and his alter ego parted ways with Mama Tribune this week after 27 incredibly rich and rewarding years. That a company could love, nurture, encourage (and tolerate) someone for that long a stretch is a testament to the soul, heart and greatness of Mama T in her prime. She's not the same old gal anymore by most measures, but then again, neither are her peers.
These are deeply dark days for old media companies, as most of you know brutally well. For the lucky on RIF Day, there is a visit from the sometimes generous Parting Gift Fairy. For many others, there is no such visit; just the stark, hellish reality of, literally, income and benefits vanished overnight. Squared is thankful for a bit of the fairy dust.
Mama T and us, we'd independently concluded in recent weeks it was probably time to call it a day; end of day, though, Mama's new management team was a wee bit more decisive about it!

So no hard feelings. No shots on the way out the door. Head high. Things happening, as they are very much prone to, for a reason. Onward. . . .

Having not seriously (or not much even informally for that matter) looked for a job in nearly 3 decades, the upcoming chapter is, indeed, going to be a challenge. Given the outpouring of supportive electronic love in the past three days -- scores of e-mails, IMs, Facebook and Linkedin messages, plus old-fashioned phone calls -- it may be tough, but it will be tough with the support of a colossal network of supporters never more than an electron away. One cannot imagine how lonely and different going through a transition like this was just a few years ago when no such deep and immediate electronic networks existed.

We'll shortly be moving Squared over to a new platform outside of the old company. Maybe do a little redesign while we're at it. Not like there isn't time at the moment ;-)

Salut Mama. Be well.

At The Newseum

A conflicted Squared attended a reception Monday night at the new Newseum in DC. The inner conflict is over the $450 million that was spent to build the temple to the press and the First Amendment and whether it could have been invested in ways to actually directly help save the freakin' business. OK, a naive and impractical notion, but had to get it out. And that's not the point of the post, anyway.

That said, there is an enormously powerful exhibit at the Newseum dedicated to 9/11, anchored by the twisted remains of the iconic broadcast spire that sat atop the north tower at the World Trade Center. A couple images below give you a sense, but simply cannot convey the raw emotional impact of standing inches away. It gives new dimension to the enormity of what took place.

Also part of the 9/11 exhibit is an unbelievable collection of photos shot by Bill Biggart, the freelance photographer who lived near the World Trade Center and arrived on the scene shortly after the attack began. He died when the second tower collapsed. His belongings (on display at the Newseum) were recovered a few days later -- including 300 undeveloped close-up frames of the horror that had unfolded over 90 minutes. His widow narrates a short video as part of the exhibit.
Pathetically Trivial Pursuits: Headline Edition

So far today <strike>8</strike> 11 -- count 'em <strike>8</strike> 11 -- posts on the Online News Association listserv about whether sentence case or title case headlines are better. Including one preposterous claim that it makes a difference to search engines! (It does not).

These are smart, respected online journalists taking time in a busy day in a life-or-death-stage absurdly competitive business to debate a topic that has absolutely, positively, inarguably, zero, nada, zip, zilch, goose egg, nil, no-no-and-no-again impact on the bottom line. But here we are, pondering and ruminating over it as it meant a rat's ass to the consumer or to a business that has about a googol of other things (including Google) ahead of it in line to figure out.

This is a particular sore spot for Squared, who along with a key mangaer on the team have been sucked into wasting so much time over this topic within Mama T over the years that it is appalling. "We must change the AP Online headlines to sentence case because that is the newspaper's style! We cannot possibly let this continue!" And perversely, precisely as Mama T, against Squared's loud and long recommendation that not another nanosecond be wasted on this topic internally, was about to implement a technical "fix" -- AP went and fixed the problem at the source. Starting next week, AP heds will be sentence case.

If TRB were still a public company, we're quite sure we'd see a stock price surge like never before.

C'mon colleagues on the ONA list. Let's find something a little more substantive to chaw on, shall we?

Looking forward to hearing from the purists about further proof of my status as a traitor to all that is holy.

Bring it on. (Or, if you prefer, Bring It On).

Good Sports Access News, For A Change

1. "Moderate" success in the negotiations between media companies and Major League Baseball over heavy-handed content rights restrictions it wanted to impose via credentials this season. MLB backing down on trying to limit online photo galleries and use of content on sibling web sites, makes things a little bearable. Video restrictions (120 seconds max, with 72 hour archive limit) and a few other things are still a pus-oozing butt blister. Would guess many will accept the negotiated terms under protest and on the condition that they are re-addressed mid-way through the season.
Study shows gaps between editors, readers over user commenting

Interesting new study by APME and the Reynolds Journalism Institute about differences of opinion between editors and online users, particularly over user commentary. Summary from AP story:

NEW YORK - Newspaper readers agree with editors on the basics of what makes good journalism, but they are more apt to want looser rules for online conversations, a new study on news credibility has found.

Newspapers highly discourage anonymous remarks, for instance, and editors are more likely than readers to want that principle applied to reader comments online, according to the Online Journalism Credibility Study released Tuesday by the Associated Press Managing Editors group and the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri.

Some 70 percent of editors surveyed said requiring commenters to disclose their identities would support good journalism, while only 45 percent of the public did. Similarly, 58 percent of editors said letting journalists join online conversations and give personal views would harm journalism, but only 36 percent of the public agreed

Here is where the highest gaps were between readers and editors (note: Sample size of readers on this is just 161, not the full 500 cited in other parts of the report. I believe the 161 is those in the sample who said they got local news from the Internet).

Higher importance for readers than editors, and points gap from ratings scale of 1-7

Journalists joining the conversation online and giving personal views: (Readers score this on average 1.06 points higher than editors)

Inviting users to participate without using their real identities: 1.03 gap

Providing convenient links from news stories to related advertising: 0.65 gap

Applying same standards to news produced by citizens as to news written by journalists: 0.29 gap

Users enforcing standards on such matters as crude language and personal attacks: 0.2 gap

Higher importance for editors than users, and points gap from ratings scale of 1-7

Requiring users who participate to state their real identities: 1.13 gap

Creating content intended to attract a diverse group of users: 1.07 gap

Journalists actively seeking varied viewpoints from people to comment on the news: 0.8 gap

Labeling news and opinion: 0.67 gap

Giving the public ways to provide information for news stories: 0.65 gap

Executive Summary, here.
Full Report, here.
AP Story, here.
