Sagaponack residents decry proposed development

It appears as though the residents of Sagaponack are passionate about preserving the village’s open vistas. So much so that Mayor Donald Louchhiem was quoted in Hamptons.com as saying that the village planning board meeting held Mondayat the one-room schoolhouse received the largest turnout ever.

The issues at hand? Subdivisions. Representatives of three developers attended the meeting to seek approvals of the following applications, as reported by Hamptons.com:

-The Gibson Lane project proposes a subdivision of a 17-acre parcel on Gibson Lane of which seven acres would be developed.
-The Schwenk Family Limited Partnership is seeking to subdivide a 41.3-acre field South of Montauk Highway, where nine building lots are proposed.
-Sagaponack Realty submitted an application to subdivide a 43.5 acre field south of the intersection of Daniels Lane and Peters Pond Lane, with a proposal to built four houses.

Even though the developers are offering to keep density low and leave 65 percent of open space, residents cite hazardous traffic conditions, flooding and loss of open space and scenic vistas as their main objections, the article said.
