For sale: Islip house where Fred Astaire stayed

fredhouse.jpeg

In it’s day, Islip was a stomping ground for the rich and famous, who built homes here in the 1800s. Most of those 19th century estates have either been razed or donated for public use, but this 7,000-square-foot Federal Maise-style manse has survived as a private residence.

And if these walls could talk, they would tell you that many a party were held here and that dancer-actor Fred Astaire and his sister, Adele, were frequent guests. His first wife, Phyllis Livingston Astaire, inherited the house in 1942.

Today the house is on the market for $1,499,990. It has seven fireplaces -- each with a different design, moldings, French doors and lots of windows. Of 20 rooms, there are seven bedrooms, a library, a sunroom, a formal dining room, a butler’s pantry and servant’s quarters. Annual taxes are $16,089.

Christina Cidoni of Century 21 Selmar Realty in East Islip is handling the sale.
