NASCAR's Jeremy Mayfield suspended for violating drug policy

NASCAR has just sent out the following release: Jeremy Mayfield, driver of the No. 41 car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Tony Martin, a licensed crew member with the No. 34 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Ben Williams, a licensed crew member with the No. 16 team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, have been indefinitely suspended from NASCAR for violating the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy.

All three were found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 7-5 (violation of the NASCAR substance abuse policy) of the 2009 NASCAR rule book.

According to the AP, Mayfield tested positive for a banned substance last weekend at Richmond International Raceway.

"In my case, I believe that the combination of a prescribed medicine and an over the counter medicine reacted together and resulted in a positive drug test," Mayfield said in a statement. "My doctor and I are working with both Dr. (David) Black and NASCAR to resolve this matter."

Black is the CEO of Aegis Sciences Corp. in Nashville, Tenn., which runs NASCAR's testing program. NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter would not reveal what banned substance Mayfield used, but Hunter said it was not an alcohol-related offense.

Being from Darlington SC, I feel that NASCAR was not right in the suspension of Mayfield before they had all the facts. it should have been a one race suspension then led to bannishment if he could not prove his innocence. I love NASCAR but i believe France and Helton are trying to be the jury before all evidence is presented. Over the counter drugs and Prescribed medications sometimes do have a negative action. Give the guy a break NASCAR!!

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?!!
These tests only test for “Markers” in a substance, and there are
even foods that can return a positive test.
Jeremy should be able to race until they have conclusive results!!

Rednecks, LOL. Everyone always says OTC mes. YOU KNOW you rae going to be tested so ask NASCAR or tell them b4 u take them

Wow, Anti Redneck, you just made yourself look like a real redneck with the way you spelled your words. Not to mention the fact that an OTC like Prilosec OTC can have adverse reactions to a drug test. NASCAR should have gotten the facts of what Mayfield was using for OTC and Prescribed medications before passing judgement.

If Mayfield had a cold and took cough medicine, there is still a good chance he would test positive for alcohol.

I'll tell you what, the word going around is that Mayfield failed his drug test because he took some Claritin and something in the Claritin popped up on the banned substances list. Which is going to be a HUGE embarrassment for NASCAR, because not only is Claritin a big-bucks sponsor (for Carl Edwards), but they are currently running a commercial on NASCAR broadcasts where Edwards himself claims he's a Claritin user.

NASCAR's problem is that they implemented this new tough policy yet failed to tell anyone what the banned substances are, instead opting for a "we'll know it when we see it" response. Not smart on their part and expect Mayfield to prevail on appeal.

Perhaps, "a false positive?". I've seen it happen to people. Also, lets not forget, Dr. Black is paid by NASCAR. Now I wonder if those drivers and crew members are smart enough, when tested by NASCAR, as soon as possible, get their own test to cover the bases.

I think that Nascar needs to have all the facts before they pass judgement.I believe that they acted to quickly. I hope that Jeremy fights this and is back to driving soon.

Typical Nascar making up the rules as they go. Brian Vickers was denied the win at Texas because Nascar officials can't read their own rules.

Seems to me Nascar wants to suspend drivers and crew for a SHOW. They want people to THINK they care. They don't give hoot about anything but money. In the late 60's Smokey Unich invented a soft wall and tried to get Nascar to stop running its competitors into concrete walls and kill them, BUT it cost money. So we lost Neil Bonnet, Adam Petty, John Nemechek and Dale Earnhardt, and others.

And until Dale died the rules only required a helmet. THATS RIGHT. until Dale died you could race in a t shirt and shorts. If Dale wasn't so popular, they still would have same rules, (no safety rules) in place. Its all about money. Nascar officials make me puke.

I have watched Nascar back when they only had clips on Wide World of Sports, before they even aired the entire race, before in car cameras, when it was real racing. Now its not about the racing anymore.

It's like watching a crooked preacher on TV, yes they are talking about God which is a good thing, but that's just a ploy to gather money when in reality the preacher could care less about people. (Except the secretary he's banging in the back room) Nascar uses the racing to gather money, and has all but ruined the sport itself and has sold out to the almighty dollar.

I believe those in charge of testing must themselves be tested, Brian France would fail every test for alcohol abuse, hahahaha

Now if there is a Nascar race, and ARCA race on at the same time, I watch the ARCA race, its all about racing, not the dollar and the baloney that today's Nascar has turned into.

It ok to be a convicted felon which PROVES dishonesty, (Rick Hendrick) and Nascar wants to pretend they have some sort of moral standard. Money Talks, and that's all Nascar can hear.

Well, time to puke a Nascar commercial just came on.

Later!

I need to add to my earlier post.

Blake Bobbit has a shattered jaw, missing teeth and has to undergo several more surgeries. She was one of the spectators injured at Talledega when Carl Edwards crashed on the last lap.

Lets examine Nascars rules for a second. ( Something Nascar doesn't do)

The rule was made, you cannot go below the yellow line. WHY?
The rule was made so drivers would not go into the next turn 5 wide and crash. On the last lap, once they cross the finish line they slow down, so entering the turn is not an issue anymore.

Now they have 2 choices, allow competitors to go below the yellow line from turn 4 to the finish line on the last lap, and if the drivers do crash in turn one, OH WELL, they are in cars with helmets and all kinds of safety equipment.
IT DOESN'T RUIN THE RACE!

Instead they want to FEEL POWERFUL and in charge of the situation, and in doing so the spectators who are not wearing helmets and safety equipment are now put at risk, as we saw in the Carl Edwards crash.

Just another example of Nascar's stupidity. SCREW THE FANS
Hell we don't even care if we kill them, but don't you DARE cross that line. WE SAID SO!.

All they need to do at Daytona and Talledega is simply take away the tires from the drivers. No matter how good your setup is, do not give the drivers a tire that will grip the track all the way through the corner, causing them to have to lift off the accelerator. Instead the IDIOTS at Nascar take away horsepower, allowing everyone to flat foot it all the way around the track, CAUSING THE BIG WRECK, and fan injuries. Nascar caused it and causes it every time.

But nascar won't listen to anything but the DOLLAR, and the dollar doesn't care if fans are injured or killed. (same position as Nascar)

Well time to puke again because of the Nascar officals.
