Silva and gold

silva.jpgSay hello to Carlos Silva. He's going to be a very rich man soon.

Silva is poised to become this year's Jeff Suppan, or Gil Meche. Also throw Kyle Lohse in this small group with Silva. So when the Mets meet with Scott Boras here at the general managers' meetings, today or tomorrow, they can discuss Lohse as well as the longshot possibility of acquiring Alex Rodriguez.

Silva just changed agents, from the affable Peter Greenberg to the affable Barry Praver and Scott Shapiro (believe it or not, not every agent is affable, despite what popular culture tells us). Praver and Shapiro are here, as well, and will meet with the Mets as soon as today.

Look at Silva's numbers. He's a durability guy - 180 innings pitched or more each of the last four seasons. He's built like a horse - 6-foot-4, 245 pounds.

Is he just what the Mets need? Their first choice would be an ace like this guy, but those pitchers are quite difficult to acquire. The Mets want innings-eaters so that their bullpen doesn't fall apart from exhaustion. Silva averaged six-plus innings per start in the American League.

What do you think, Mets fans? Does this guy interest you? Be realistic now. Santana, Roy Oswalt, Josh Beckett and a young Tom Seaver aren't walking through that door (scroll down to May 8, 1997 if you don't know this reference).

Carlos Silva wouuld be a good free agent aquisition. He only costs money. He had very similar numbers to Glavine in 2007 and he is only 28. Their primary goal is to replace Glavine's innings and take some pressure off the middle relievers. Silva would do that. They still need a #1 but I agree with you, it just doesn't happen.

Silva's merely ok. I wouldn't hate him as our #4 starter, although his K/9 is way low, but he doesn't walk many batters though. But what Omar must do this offseason is trade for good young starter who throws hard and whose age starts with a 2, not a 3 (or a 4!). Package one of Gomez/Milledge with one of Pelfrey/Humber and other prospects and get us a good arm!

Forget this guy. Get Dan Haren. He's a genuine ace, and he'd be worth the prospects we'd have to give up. Also, let's get Nady for RF (or 1B, if we can dump Delgado).

The Mets don't have the prospects to get Haren, Your Honor.

We could package Gomez, Humber, Heilman, and a lower level prospect for Haren. It could backfire, but it's worth the risk. Also, doesn't Oakland need a DH? We could put Delgado in a package for them, and pay the majority of his salary.

A writer for the NY Post has suggested what I've been bringing up for the last year: how the Mets should go after Dan Haren. He seems to think Milledge and Heilman would be the key talent in the deal for Oakland. If that would be so, great. But that ain't happening. The Mets will probably have to deal Gomez, Humber and another top prospect. The Mets should do it, regardless of the combination. It just makes too much sense. Although hopefully, they can hold on to Fernando Martinez. But if they have to trade him, so be it.
